  1. One of the most prestigious franchises of the National Basketball Association, the Los Angeles Lakers organised The âCelebration of Lifeâ ceremony at the Staples Center stadium to pay homage to basketball legend Kobe Bryant, his baby girl, Gianna and seven other people who lost their lives in a horrible helicopter crash last month. It was one of those rare moments when people from all over the world, competitors from within the league, celebrities and common folk, came together and mourned the loss of one of the greatest men not just in the world of basketball, but outside of it as well. View this post on InstagramThe basketball world gathered to honor the Mamba and Mambacita.A post shared by (@bleacherreport) While Beyonce sang Bryantâs favourite songs, Alicia Keys performed Beethovanâs âMoonlight Sonata,â one of the most difficult piano routines ever, that Kobe learnt within a week to dedicate to his highschool sweetheart, wife and now widow, Vanessa Bryant. Vanessaâs message for her daughter and husband consisted of some of the fondest memories they had shared together as family and how they will continue to be a team as she has three other daughters to now take care of, while Kobe will look after Gianna in heaven. Nobody can foresee something like what took the lives of Kobe and Gianna, nobody can âprepareâ for it. From talk show host, Jimmy Kimmelâs initial speech to Shaquille OâNealâs short, simple and hilarious adieu to the âBlack Mambaâ, you could see that nothing was scripted and whatever these guys were speaking was straight from the heart and with a lot of emotion. However, when Michael Jordan was asked to make a speech, the whole stadium went silent. After years and years of sacrificing his body on the basketball court, an older, heavier Michael Jordan climbed the stage with a limp. With his eyes, already filled with tears, Jordan addressed the gathering. âNow heâs got me â Iâm going to have to look at another crying meme for the next â¦,â he said as the audience erupted in laughter. âI told my wife I wasnât going to do this,â Jordan continued, âbecause I didnât want to see that for the next three or four years. That is what Kobe Bryant does to me.â âHe wanted to be the best basketball player that he could be,â Jordan said. âAs I got to know him, I wanted to be the best big brother that I could be.â âIn the game of basketball, in life, as a parent, Kobe left nothing in the tank,â Jordan said. âHe left it all on the floor.â Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan were like two peas in a pod. The way the two played the game of basketball, the killer instincts they shared, the unbelievable work ethic they had, even the way the two stuck out their tongues while dunking on their opponents, were unbelivably similar. They were competitors for a very small period of time as Jordan was in the twilight of his career but nonetheless, their contests were a treat for viewers. Kobe adored Michael and Michael gave back the love equally. They would talk about the game, family, and everything else in the world there was to talk about. Jordan had transitioned from being an opponent to being an older brother. âWhen Kobe Bryant died, a piece of me died,â Jordan said, moments before walking off the stage and disappearing into the crowd. 3. Kim Kardashian's extravagant gift for daughter North West is Michael Jackson's iconic jacketKim Kardashian gifted her daughter North West an iconic jacket worth $65,000, that earlier belonged to legendary singer Michael Jackson. The couple made their daughter North’s Christmas even more star-studded and magical after gifting their six-year-old a gift that most of the kids her age can only dream of having. Kim took to Instagram to reveal the vintage item, a custom black jacket, featuring a bedazzling vine outfitted with crystals, pearls and chains and a red band around the right arm. "For Christmas, Kanye and I gave North this jacket and this was Michael Jackon's jacket that he wore with Elizabeth Taylor. And North is a really big Michael Jackson fan and we knew she would love this..." Kim explained in Tuesday's video. The reality star added, "We had it tacked up so she can wear it, and the sleeves are half tacked up so when she gets older we can untack this sleeve and it can grow with her and she can have this for her whole life." "And she's so grateful and so excited," said Kim. The King of Pop wore the jacket to Taylor's 65th birthday party and a Cannes Film Festival screening of his film, Ghost, in 1997. The beauty mogul told her fans that she and her husband won the topper at an auction, and there are photos from both events currently placed within the coat, as Kim showed in her video.
  4. Arguably one of the greatest captains of England, Michael Vaughan, long after retirement, continues to garner great public interest over his insightful match analysis and unmatched knowledge of the gentleman's game. But, every now and then, the former England cricketer's brutally honest comments often draw criticism for fans. And, lately, Vaughan seems to have found a way to ruffle the feathers of Indian cricket fans. His comments on Indian pitches during the Test series against South Africa drew the ire of cricket fans in the country. And, on 14th November, Vaughan's tweet on the Indore pitch, where India and Bangladesh are currently playing the 1st Test, once again had the social media buzzing. This Test Match pitch in India is a belter .... #Justsaying #INDvBAN — Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) November 14, 2019 Taking to Twitter, Vaughan gave his opinion about the Indore pitch, calling it a "belter". "This Test Match pitch in India is a belter....#Justsaying #INDvBAN," he tweeted. Vaughan was probably lauding the ground staff for preparing a competitive, fast-bowling pitch at the Holkar Cricket Stadium which explains why Bangladesh were bundled out for a mere 150 runs as the seam-bowling trio of Mohammed Shami (3-27), Ishant Sharma (2-20) and Umesh Yadav (2-47) made merry in the first innings. Why because it's green and represents a seamer instead of a turner? Expand your mind Vaughn, not every wicket has to represent a white mans pitch.. diverse wickets make test cricket interesting @nikkrishnan #INDvBAN — Anks (@anks1606) November 14, 2019 But, despite Vaughan's intentions, an Indian fan thought the former England captain was being sarcastic while taking a dig at the country's fondness of preparing spin-friendly wickets. In response to Vaughan's tweet, the fan wrote: "Why because it's green and represents a seamer instead of a turner? Expand your mind Vaughn, not every wicket has to represent a white mans pitch.. diverse wickets make test cricket interesting". White mans pitch !!!!!!!! What a strange comment .... Do you not see the diverse nature of the England Cricket team these days !!??? #OnOn https://t.co/cuT67z22t1 — Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) November 14, 2019 Not the one to back down from a fight, Vaughan wasted no time in scripting his response. "White mans pitch !!!!!!!! What a strange comment....Do you not see the diverse nature of the England Cricket team these days!!??? #OnOn," Vaughan responded. Have seen ur tweets re a particular type of wicket that apparently gives credence in the eyes of aussies and the English.. we Indians enjoy the green decks england and SA provide.. but also enjoy the dry turners we get in ind.. diversity is what makes test cricket great! Embrace — Anks (@anks1606) November 14, 2019 Vaughan's response further drew a retort from the Indian fan who explained his stance while urging the England great to embrace "dry turners" as much as the green surfaces in cricket. "Have seen ur tweets re a particular type of wicket that apparently gives credence in the eyes of aussies and the English.. we Indians enjoy the green decks england and SA provide.. but also enjoy the dry turners we get in ind.. diversity is what makes test cricket great! Embrace," the Indian fan tweeted back. The exchange between the two also sparked a great debate on social media. @MichaelVaughan ,don't argue with our 1.3 billion experts,u ought to lose — Moukthik susarla (@MoukthikS) November 14, 2019 Racism at its lowest point as the white race can't say anything about any race and must accept anything any other race says about us — Alan jones (@Alanjons7) November 14, 2019 White men is the mentality for 3rd world and developing countries like India. 5. The world of cricket has been no stranger to athleticism and the agility of cricketers on the field. Whether it's lightning-fast run-outs or unbelievable catches, many fielders have managed to capture the imagination of fans over the years. But, amongst those fielders, there remain a few whose sheer movement on the playing field has the ability to set hearts racing. Jonty Rhodes was and remains one of the best fielders to have graced the gentleman's game. His heroics were almost identically replicated by his fellow countryman AB de Villiers in modern-day cricket. And, thanks to an increased focus on fitness these days, every team is looking to make an impact in the fielding department to gain that extra advantage over the opposition. Doing a quick Friday night poll for tonight's @9NewsMelb; Question; is this catch from Ab De Villiers the best catch you've seen. Big call... what do you say? pic.twitter.com/HQcJFWJisC — tony jones (@TJch9) May 18, 2018 While the likes of Rhodes and De Villiers might have called time on their respective careers, their legacy continues to live on and eventually comes to the fore whenever a cricketer produces magic on the field. A similar incident came to light when Harmanpreet Kaur took the field against West Indies in the first One-day International (ODI) at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua. Opting to bat first, the hosts were aided by pivotal knocks from Stefanie Taylor (94) and Natasha McLean (51) to eventually post a competitive total of 225 runs. But, on the final delivery of the Windies innings, Taylor, who was just six runs shy of a brilliant hundred, was looking to smash a six with a well-timed shot. Harmanpreet Kaur has just taken one of the great catches to deny Stafanie Taylor, on 94, an ODI century. That airtime âï¸ pic.twitter.com/unSBRRuNFu — Wisden (@WisdenCricket) November 2, 2019 While Taylor, considering it was the final ball of their innings, was looking to accumulate as many runs as possible, India's T20I skipper Harmanpreet had different plans. Watching the ball till the very last minute, Harmanpreet timed her jump to perfection to catch the ball mid-air with one hand, producing one of the best catches we've seen in recent times. Such was her airtime that it would have surely made Michael Jordan proud. In reply, India, despite a fighting innings from Priya Punia (75), came agonisingly close to chasing the total before eventually falling short and losing the match by a mere run. While Windies held their nerves to snatch a well-deserved win, it was Harmanpreet who ran away with the plaudits for her brilliance in the field that also saw her being compared with De Villiers. WHAT. A. CATCH. India, when you wake up in the morning, do join the rest of the world in watching the highlights of Harmanpreet Kaur taking a ONE-HANDED BLINDER at the BOUNDARY, please. West Indies' captain Stafanie Taylor falls for 94. What an innings! What a catch!#WIvIND — Annesha Ghosh (@ghosh_annesha) November 1, 2019 Brilliant ! 6. One of the most pragmatic captains and skilful batsmen of his time, Michael Vaughan remains a fan-favourite long after his retirement from international cricket. Not one to shy away from speaking his mind, the former England captain has established himself as one of the most respected voices in the sport. From his informative match analysis to honest reviews, Vaughan continues to garner public interest on social media. With the ICC World Cup currently underway, Vaughan is quite busy expressing his views on players, teams and notable performances in the tournament. During India's six-wicket triumph over South Africa at the Rose Bowl on 5th June, the England veteran labelled Kedar Jadhav as his "new favourite bowler". Kedar Jadhav is my new favourite bowler .... !! — Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) June 5, 2019 Clearly, there was a touch of sarcasm in Vaughan's remark. Jadhav, a batting all-rounder, was used by Virat Kohli as a sixth bowler to get some overs in quickly. And, given his role, Jadhav did alright, conceding 16 runs from four overs without any wicket to his name. Calling Jadhav his new favourite bowler was more of a dig than praise by Vaughan - something that didn't go down well with one particular Indian fan. Typical English ex-player-turned-expert. Even the best of them (Vaughan isn't one of them) only follow non-England players when they play in England, and even if they've played there before, they react like they're watching them for the first time, often with condescension. https://t.co/LEUTVJHpV6 — Karthik Krishnaswamy (@the_kk) June 5, 2019 Responding to Vaughan's tweet, an Indian fan called the former England cricketer a “typical ex-player-turned-expert” who wasn't among the best produced by England over the years. "Typical English ex-player-turned-expert. Even the best of them (Vaughan isn't one of them) only follow non-England players when they play in England, and even if they've played there before, they react like they're watching them for the first time, often with condescension," the Indian fan tweeted. Oh shut up you idiot .... https://t.co/G51VgQfdmp — Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) June 5, 2019 Called out for his remarks, Vaughan lashed out at the Indian cricket fan before tweeting: "Oh shut up you idiot". Vaughan's feisty response got mixed reactions on social media. While some slammed his remarks, others lauded him for making the right noise. Don't cry ð — Happyð®ð³ (@Cricketician_) June 5, 2019 Kudos to you Micheal for making the right noises, knowing full well it'd awaken the zombies. Takes guts! 7. The year was 1992. The US men's basketball team was pretty much swatting its opponents away. USA took on Croatia for the gold medal match and won by a 32-point margin. That side in the years to come, came to be known as the Dream Team and truth be told, it had some big names. The team had the likes of Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing and Chris Mullin among others. But one man drew a lot of attention and already had a budding career with Chicago Bulls in the NBA. That man was Michael Jordan. In 8 games, he averaged nearly 15 points and by the time he retired, would leave a legacy behind to be proud of. © Getty Images 32,292 points, 6672 rebounds and 5633 assists speaks a lot of his ability on the court. He also averaged over 30 points per game. When one hears his name, the memory of him flying in the air to make a basket stands out. But this is not the story of his legacy, it is the impact he made on that day in 1992 in the mind of a 6-year old boy who was, well, still getting to understand the world around him. Yours truly was discovering this new sport where one had to put the ball in the basket and here was this player who was stealing his imagination. I actually owe a lot to basketball. In my school days, while I was more into cricket, basketball was the sport that I played to keep fit. In fact, while it may sound a little too much of a stretch, I even owe my very late growth spurt to the sport. But enough about all that, back to why Jordan was so important in my life. © Getty Images Growing up in the 1990s, particularly in India, one did not have much access to sports like nowadays as far as information was concerned. There was no digital media where we could get updates just like that. Back then, the newspaper, TV and radio were our only options. NBA matches would be telecast late at night as they were being played right across the world, and the odds of staying up late in the school days was out of the question. Still, the fan in me would not give up. Occasionally I would sneak into the living room and watch with a low volume when Jordan was playing. It paid off. I got to see him win the NBA championship with the Bulls in 1996, 1997 and 1998. Not to mention being part of the All-Star from 1996 to 1998 and 2002 to 2003. Sometimes I do wonder, what if Jordan was playing now and that too in his prime? We sure would have loved to see him take on the likes of LeBron James. But when all is said and done, Jordan is the reason I started playing and watching the game, to begin with. It all began on that day in 1992. It was a pleasure to watch him on the court and the inner child in me counts himself lucky. So from the bottom of my heart, I thank you Michael Jordan, for making me fall in love with the basket, the ball and the court.
  8. An integral part of Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years, Kieron Pollard hasn't quite come to the party as far as the ongoing season is concerned. While the likes of Andre Russell, Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo have made an impact, Pollard has struggled to get going in the initial stage of the tournament. The right-handed batsman couldn't score more than 21 runs as Mumbai succumbed to a 37-run loss in their opening match. While Mumbai bounced back in the second match with a six-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Pollard was only able to add a six-ball five to his team. The big West Indian's struggles continued in the third match where he was dismissed for a nine-ball seven against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). Twitter/@IPL Struggling with the bat and not getting a chance to bowl, Pollard's batting slump attracted immense criticism, with the cricket pundits suggesting he should be dropped for the crucial tie against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on 3rd April. But, Rohit Sharma and Mumbai's team management continued to trust Pollard and the Trinidadian didn't disappoint. Repaying the faith of his captain, Pollard was part of a carnage that was finished by swashbuckling Hardik Pandya. While the West Indies cricketer slammed a seven-ball 17, Pandya ran riot during his eight-ball 25. The duo hammered Dwayne Bravo all around the park to score a staggering 29 runs off the final over. In the fifth over, the 31-year-old was stationed at the point boundary when Suresh Raina slapped Jason Behrendorff's length ball ferociously in his direction. But, timing his jump to perfection, the Mumbai all-rounder produced enough airtime (something that would surely make Michael Jordan feel proud) that it allowed him to pluck the ball in thin air during an incredible one-handed effort. While Mumbai brought an end to Chennai's three-match winning streak after an emphatic 37-run triumph, Pollard's unbelievable fielding effort earned him plaudits on the social media. Helps to be tall! 9. Arguably one of the greatest athlete of his generation, Michael Phelps dominated competitive swimming every time he entered the pool. From creating records to bagging Olympic golds, matching Phelps' astronomical achievements will surely be an uphill battle for the next generation swimmers in years to come. The American legend might have called time on his career, but such has been his success in competitive swimming that he continues to garner public affection and enjoys popularity across the globe. So, when he set foot in India for the very first time, the excitement amongst people was quite understandably at an all-time high. Arriving in India in collaboration with a sports and fitness brand, Phelps was seen enjoying interactive fun sessions in the national capital. But, the moment that surely stands out on his recent trip was his exchange with Delhi Capitals (DC) destructive batsman Rishabh Pant in nets. View this post on Instagram Michael Phelps takes batting lessons from Rishabh Pant! A post shared by Delhi Capitals (@delhicapitals) on Mar 27, 2019 at 4:28am PDT The 23-time Olympic gold medallist was seen taking batting lessons from Pant as he tried his hand at cricket in the nets. In a video shared by Delhi Capitals on Instagram, Pant can be seen helping him with his stance while imparting batting tips to the swimming great. After sharing a light moment with the legendary swimmer, Pant was asked how would he convince Phelps to play cricket. In reply, the left-hander told IANS: "I would just tell him that he is most welcome to stay at my place for as long as he wants, where I can teach him how to play the sport". View this post on Instagram Just a causal chat before we got together for the group picture! ð¸ A post shared by Delhi Capitals (@delhicapitals) on Mar 27, 2019 at 3:13am PDT Apart from Pant, Phelps was also seen interacting with Capitals' other players including captain Shreyas Iyer, Chris Morris and Ishant Sharma. "The man is an absolute legend. He is the all-time leading gold medal winner at the Olympics. It is quite an honour to interact with him. I was excited to see him today. Phelps is a name that is synonymous with Olympics. Two Olympians -- Phelps and Usain Bolt -- have become household names, and I'm really buzzing," Morris told IANS. "It was a great opportunity for all of us to have met him. You know he's a world champion and we shared a few moments with him as well. He has been a huge motivation to athletes around the world over the years, and it was the same for all of us at the Delhi Capitals," Delhi's bowling spearhead Ishant said. View this post on Instagram ICYMI: We hosted the most decorated Olympian, @M_Phelps00 at #QilaKotla for our first home game! While Delhi couldn't match Chennai's might, losing the contest by six wickets, Phelps was just happy to watch a live cricket match. "I don't think cricket is my next sport, but I loved seeing the match with the Delhi Capitals. It was nice to see how excited the crowd was, and to see how the players shift when there is a change of ends, or a dismissal. I loved watching the sixes. Definitely, today has been about getting a couple of tips from the boys, starting with how to hold a bat. I'm sure I will be better prepared to play cricket when I visit India next," Phelps said.
  10. Unless you are living under a rock, you have to have an idea about who Michael Phelps is. Bringing about a revolution in the sport of swimming with more than a decade worth of non-stop dedication to his craft, multiple sessions of 2-3 hours of extreme exertion inside the pool and unbelievably strong self-discipline. Participating in four summer Olympics (2004-2016) during his time as a professional swimmer, the 33-year-old athlete has had two bronze medals, three silver medals and 23 gold medals placed around his neck. This astonishing feat of 28 medals in totality makes him the most successful Olympian in the history of mankind and the competition is not even close. It was, therefore, a moment of honour the sporting fraternity of India to host such a remarkable athlete who visited our land for the very first time. As a brand ambassador of Under Armour, a 23-year-old company that manufactures footwear, sports, and casual apparel, Phelps is here to inaugurate their very first commercial outlet that has opened up in DLF Promenade Mall in New Delhi. View this post on Instagram Level of excitement can't be contained just like the will of 1.3 billion Indians. So, when I spent six years without missing a single day of training, I was getting so much more benefit than the other athletes,” said the 23-time Olympic gold medalist. “They (other swimmers) used to swim for six days. If you take an off on Sunday, you are not back by Tuesday and that's exactly where I was getting so much of extra benefit. Phelps also made it absolutely certain that he will not be returning to the pool after retiring from the game in 2016. “Now if I enter the pool, I don't have the same feel...” “I don't swim anymore. I have lost it,” he jokes. View this post on Instagram ðððððððð 10 years ago today i had the chance to share the pool with these guys once again. I couldn't have asked for better teammates to share this amazing moment with!! #aaronpeirsol @brendanhansen12 and @jason_lezak . I know as being a part of team USA how important the TEAM is! Thank you boys and I can't tell you how much of an honor it was!!! These guys and others helped me make history and do something that so many ppl thought was impossible! A post shared by Michael Phelps (@m_phelps00) on Aug 17, 2018 at 10:14pm PDT Another interesting question was raised by Under Armour CEO, Kevin Plank, who seemed to be equally fascinated by the swimmer as the rest of the reporters at the venue. Plank asked: “Do you love winning or hate losing?” Without hesitating for even a single second, Phelps reverted: “I hate losing. Yes, I do not like to lose. People ask me what goes on inside my mind when I am standing on the swimming block and I say 'nothing does', and that's how it should be. If a race is about to start, I am focused on winning it, and that's just it.” Phelps is the epitome of dedication and yet one of the most humble human beings to have graced the biggest stage of sports ever, and his regimen plays a huge role in building up such a character out of him.
  11. While growing up, especially in the 90s, we were all hooked to popular culture which was making its way through to India from all across the globe. One of the most prominent indulgence back them was music and whenever we speak of international music from the 90s, we can't help but unanimously think of the 'King of Pop' Michael Jackson. We've all heard him while growing up. While some us were truly hooked to his music, most of us were enthralled with his style of dancing. Whatever it was, MJ proved to the world that there would never be another music icon like him. © Pintrest But TBH that's not all we've known him for and quite unfortunately, MJ has managed to tarnish his reputation. While the newsroom was always abuzz with his stories, some of them stated that he was a child molester, a paedophile, who would molest little boys in his fantasy themed ranch-home, 'Neverland'. The news came and went like a season and although it baffled most of us, we shrugged it off as a misheard rumour and still gave him the respect he then deserved when he made us live under the realms of secrecy and the lesser known. © HBO Recently, after almost 20 something years, new information has surfaced giving the old rumours much more room and significance. Almost ten years after his death, a documentary has seen brand new light, highlighting evidential facts about MJ indeed molesting little kids in 'Neverland'. The documentary paints a rather unnerving and painful picture of the pop-artist's former ranch and we're feeling absolutely gutted even writing about it. The controversial film focuses on sexual allegations made by two men, whom he befriended when they were boys and asked them to stay with him at Neverland. Wade Robson and James Safechuck were sexually abused by MJ for several years in secrecy at his Nerverland ranch in California. © HBO The documentary has posed several legal threats for HBO and Channel 4 and obviously for the makers too, by Michael Jackson's estate, but the channels will air it regardless, next month. In fact, a new trailer for the documentary dropped just a day ago and the claims seem more real and uncanny than before. The new trailer offers a first look in to Jackson's twisted personality, via a 4 hour documentary, which was first screened at the Sundance Film Festival last month and it absolutely shocked the critics and the audience as they didn't know what was really coming for them. The two boys have absolutely exposed the closeted predator behaviour MJ displayed at his ranch and most of the facts are shocking and unbelievable. © HBO In the movie the accusers explain how Michael had led them to believe that if they ever told anyone about what he was doing to them then they would all end up in jail and so they didn't come forward to tell their story, most of their growing years, even after he passed away. “Everybody wanted to meet Michael or be with Michael,” We drive in, and forget about all your problems, you were in Neverland. It was a fantasy,” Say the boys in the new trailer. © HBO According to Dan Reed, the director this is not a movie about Michael Jackson or of how he abused little boys sexually. The main focus of the film is on how two families trusted Michael Jackson to leave their sons in his care and how much of an effort it took for the boys to reveal the truth to their families, years later, when they were grown men. MJ's estate has criticised the film already, in a 10-page letter addressed to the CEO of HBO but HBO is determined to telecast the documentary, without making any cuts by next month. There have been some attacks towards the film and towards Dan Reed by MJ's fans but given that the situation is fairly tough, this is bound to happen. © HBO “Anyone who sees the film will know it is solely about hearing the stories of two specific individuals and their families in their own words, and that is a focus we are very proud of,” - Reed told a popular publication. For the Indian audience who absolutely love Michael Jackson, maybe it's time to give up your fandom in order to not glorify predators and see them for who they really are. Here's hoping we get to catch the documentary in India sooner than later and it's accessible to easily download or buffer through the interweb.
  12. Did you know that the most magical community in the world runs on Invision Community? For close to 12 years, Invision client @Michael R has been spreading joy through the Santa Claus Network (ClausNet.com), the world’s largest community for Santa and his followers. He started building the site in November 2006 and went live in the beginning of 2007, using Invision Community as his platform of choice since the beginning. Michael also founded the James D. Rielly Foundation in honor of his grandfather – a non-profit organization that provides charitable and emotional support to military and first responder families. As a tribute to the holidays, Mike was gracious enough to be interviewed by Joel on behalf of Invision Community on how he uses Invision Community and engages with his unique community. J: This is such a wonderful community of passion. How did you get started? Back in October 2005, I attended the world-famous Charles W. Howard Santa Claus School. It was a Christmas present I received from my wife. At that time, I had already been portraying Santa for 34 years but was a bit skeptical of what I would get out of attending a “Santa School.” He’s already nailed the Santa look. At the school I got to meet Santas from all over the World! It was a wonderful experience and I am still friends with many of the folks, but what I enjoyed most of all was the camaraderie I felt with my fellow brothers and sisters in red. This was the catalyst in creating ClausNet – to recreate the same feeling of fellowship I felt at the school. J: Your membership must be very unique. ClausNet is the world's largest online community dedicated to the faithful portrayal of Santa Claus. Our membership also includes Mrs. Claus, Elves, Reindeer Handlers, and all others who devote their time to bringing the magic of Christmas to children and adults throughout the world! In comparison to other sites, 2,900 isn’t a lot of members. But based on some estimates it’s about two thirds of all the Santas and Mrs. Clauses on the planet! We are very selective who of we approve for membership. In addition to Invision’s validation process, I personally email each person who registers for an account. I do this to help eliminate trolls and other Grinchy people, but mostly to keep out the prying eyes of children to preserve the Secret of Santa and keep the magic alive for children of all ages! J: What Invision apps do you use, and how do you use them? We have all the Invision Community apps and rely upon them for many purposes. We don’t sell products on the site but we do use Commerce for donations. Members can purchase Supporter Level Memberships at varying prices. We use Pages and Blogs for posting short stories, opinion pieces, and even business advice. We use Downloads for sharing files such as example contracts and business card templates. The Calendar app is a great resource in notifying and scheduling regional get-togethers, workshops, schools, and training sessions. Articles and short stories written in Pages. J: What are some of the most innovative features of Invision Community that your members have embraced? I believe Invision Community is the most robust platform for building online communities. Our members really like the new Clubs feature. We use Clubs for regional and local groups as well as specific topics such as prop making and costuming. From the Long Leaf Pines to the Northern Pacific, ClausNet uses regional clubs all over the world to foster closer relationship. J: There must be seasonality with your niche. How do you keep your members engaged throughout the year and what are some special events that you host? Throughout the year we run several activities designed to keep up engagement. Member of the Month - Each month, I select a different member of our community to featured. We interview the candidate and post the interview on the site. ClausNet Gazette Monthly Newsletter - We send out a monthly newsletter of content from the website. Surprisingly, it’s the first time many of the members see the content. It is a great way to keep members coming back to the site. Christmas Card and Ornament Exchange – These are two of the most anticipated events we hold. Members sign up and are randomly paired with another, so they can exchange cards or ornaments. It’s very exciting to receive Christmas ornaments from another part of the world! We also run several other programs such as an Annual Raffle, Countdown to Christmas, Picture Contests, and Latest News. J: As a longtime Invision client whose passion is the holidays, what are your holiday wishes to other Invision clients and clients-to-be? As many of you know, Christmas is my favorite holiday – a holiday that lives in my heart year-round! May this holiday season be one of health and happiness for you and your loved ones. Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Kwanzaa, Festive Festivas, Fröhliche Weihnachten, Nollaig Shona, Boas Festas, Buon Natale, Feliz Navidad, Merry Christmas! J: Thank you Mike for graciously spending your time with me and other Invision clients to learn how you engage with members using Invision Community. Hopefully this interview has helped inspire and motivate other clients with some extra cheer during the holiday season!

  14. Ever since making his debut, Hardik Pandya has rapidly become a vital cog for the Indian cricket team in all forms of cricket. The Baroda cricketer adds teeth to India's middle order with his powerful hitting, while his brisk seam bowling has often provided crucial breakthroughs to his side. It was his ability to perform as an allrounder that saw him getting compared to great Kapil Dev. But, while many backed Pandya's all-round capabilities, others thought he was still far away from joining India's first World Cup winning captain as a top-class allrounder. Amongst the naysayers, Michael Holding stood out with his scathing attack on Pandya. The former West Indies cricketer claimed that Pandya was nowhere near the might of Kapil and still had a long way to go in the longer version of the game. Despite what the Indian fans felt, Holding did make a valid point in his assessment of Pandya. The 24-year-old cricketer might have proved his worth in limited-overs cricket, but he was yet to make a mark in Test. © Reuters But, on 19th August, Pandya arguably won every single critic who would've doubted him and his abilities to come good in the longest format. The right-handed seamer made the most of the swing-friendly conditions on offer in the third Test to notch an impressive fifer at the expense of just 28 runs as England suffered a massive batting collapse before being bowled out for a paltry 161 runs in the first innings. 10 wickets in the session. Fantastic from India. Hardik Pandya was the standout with that magnificent spell. Firmly in India 's control as of now. — Mohammad Kaif (@MohammadKaif) August 19, 2018 Thanks to his brilliant bowling performance at Trent Bridge, India didn't just manage to see the back of English batsmen, but also went on to post a sizeable lead of 292 runs at the end of second day's play. If his bowling turned the naysayers into believers, Pandya's comments after the game proved how much the five-for meant to him. "I have never wanted to be Kapil Dev. Let me be Hardik Pandya, I am good at being Hardik Pandya, I played 41 ODIS and 10 Tests being Hardik Pandya, not Kapil Dev," Pandya told reporters after the second day's play. © Reuters Such was Pandya's performance that it even instigated his biggest critic Holding to laud his efforts. “England lost 10 wickets in a session for the third time in the last two years but you have to say that the bowlers bowled well for India, Hardik Pandya in particular. He kept the ball up, which was so important, and it was swinging around. A couple of shots from the England batsmen were a little bit out of character, for instance Chris Woakes hooking at that ball. I don't think that was advisable at that stage of the game,” Holding wrote in his column for Sky Sports. Michael Holding: "Hardik Pandya is not an all-rounder." Pandya gets fired up and takes 5 wickets. Someone please tell Michael Holding to say: "Hardik Pandya can't score a triple century in the 2nd innings."#ENGvIND — Sorabh Pant (@hankypanty) August 19, 2018 “I think the bowlers bowled well, you can't take anything away from them. They deserve credit for the way they changed things because the first spell from the Indian bowlers wasn't very good. They were bowling a little bit too short in my book. After lunch though, they were a lot better,” he added. © Reuters After reducing England to 161 runs, India began their second innings on a positive note as Shikhar Dhawan (44) and KL Rahul (36) added 60 runs for the first wicket. Ben Stokes gave England a vital breakthrough after dismissing Rahul in the 12th over, while Adil Rashid got the better of Dhawan in the 24th over. Maiden fiver within five overs. England have made a Test all-rounder out of Hardik Pandya... #EngvInd — Chetan Narula (@chetannarula) August 19, 2018 At the end of second day's play, India looked in control with Cheteshwar Pujara (33*) and Virat Kohli (8*) fighting hard at the crease. Having already attained a sizeable lead, the visitors will now be eager to put up another strong performance on the third day as they chase a potential win to bounce back and stay alive in the five-match Test series.
  15. Remember 'Djarum Black'? The black-coloured clove cigarettes that initially looked cool to smoke and made you stand out, until you realised your folks could smell its strong stench from a mile away. Often labelled as a rich man's Gudang Garam, they are almost available at every roadside shop in India today. But, have you wondered where it came from? I was almost under the impression that it was being manufactured at some shady factory in Andhra Pradesh. However, it's not. 'Djarum Black' - also known as 'kreteks' - are imported from Indonesia - one of the biggest exporters of clove cigarettes, cigars and hand-rolled bidis in the world. It is manufactured by Indonesia's famous Djarum Group which was founded by an ethnic Chinese businessman in Kudus (Central Java) in 1951. Oei Wie Gwan bought a nearly defunct cigarette company known as NV Murup and gave birth to the brand Djarum we all know today. But, the company also went extinct in 1963 when a huge fire destroyed its factory which was followed by Gwan's death. © Twitter The death of Djarum Group's owner paved way for his children Robert Budi Hartono and Michael Bambang Hartono who took over the reins and re-established their brand. Today, Djarum Group has around 50 blends of clove cigarettes internationally and is the world's third-largest manufacturer of clove cigarettes. The company has an estimated net worth of over $11 billion, while Hartono family's net worth is estimated to be around $16.7 billion (according to Forbes). But, the Hartono family isn't in news for their commercial interests in tobacco, banking and communications amongst others, rather it is Gwan's son Michael whose much-anticipated participation in the 2018 Asian Games, slated to begin from 18th August in Jakarta & co-hosted in Palembang, that has got the media attention. Michael, the 78-year-old billionaire tobacco tycoon and the richest man in Indonesia, is set to represent his country on its bridge team at the world's second-biggest multi-sport event. Classified as a 'mind game', contract bridge is a card game that is played with a standard 52-card deck. In its basic format, it is played by four players in two competing partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other around a table. © Twitter The game consists of several deals - each progressing through four phases. The cards are dealt to the players, and then the players auction or bid to take the contract, specifying how many tricks the partnership receiving the contract (the declaring side) needs to take to receive points for the deal. During the auction, partners communicate information about their hand, including its overall strength and the length of its suits, although conventions for use during play also exist. The cards are then played, the declaring side trying to fulfil the contract, and the defenders trying to stop the declaring side from achieving its goal. The deal is scored based on the number of tricks taken, the contract, and various other factors which depend to some extent on the variation of the game being played. Well, it's more of a mystery to me who has never been able to get a hold of any card game (including childish Uno). But, what's interesting here is the fact that contract bridge has been included to the Games by Indonesia as hosts. And, it appears that Michael Hartono played a crucial role in convincing a sceptical Olympic Council of Asia to gove the card game its maiden run at the Asian Games. I guess, when you are the richest man in the country, it doesn't really take much convincing, does it. © Twitter Hartono's association to bridge reportedly dates back to the tender age of six. He has also competed several times in the World Bridge Championships and now aims to strike gold for his country at the Asian Games. But, the tobacco king, claims he isn't doing it for money, but for the passion he has for bridge. In fact, Hartono has announced that he'll forego the 1.5 billion rupiah ($102,000) cash prize that the Indonesian government has promised to award to its top medallists at the Games. "If I managed to win gold, I would donate the government's cash prize to the athletes training program," he was quoted as saying by domestic news agency Antara. Apart from his rich background and passion for bridge, Hartono narrowly missed out on being the oldest player to compete at this year's Asian Games. Malaysia's Lee Hung Fong - the 81-year-old who'll compete against Hartono in contract bridge - has claimed the unique feat with his participation. Fong is seven decades older than the youngest athlete - nine-year-old Indonesian skateboarder Aliqqa Novvery Kayyisa - at this year's edition of the Games.
  16. There are some who turn into travel junkies, and then there are those who take their passion for travel and turn it into purpose. This week, Soaib Grewal interviews Michael Lyngdoh, co-founder of Tripoto, a technology startup that changed the travel game in India.
  17. Michael Jordan is a living legend. He has broken quite a few records in his career. Here are some well never forget.
  18. When most of us were tagging pictures with the hashtag 'wanderlust', one man saw it as an opportunity and decided to make a journal. Not just a journal but a techno journal; available for travellers like you and me. You can also call it a digital community of travellers. Before we talk about the app, let's get to know the co-founder. © Tripoto Whoever says only IITans are start-up people, clearly haven't met Michael. With an M.A. in Economics from Delhi School of Economics & an MBA in finance from ISB Hyderabad, Michael wanted to do something more than just a 9-5 job. Being a travel enthusiast, he wanted to follow his passion and create a job out of it. Luckily, he met Anirudh Gupta at IBS-H, someone with the same enthusiasm and big dreams. A post shared by Tripoto (@tripotocommunity) on Jul 16, 2018 at 5:30am PDT The journey wasn't typically a piece of cake for Michael. When you go down the road less travelled, there are bound to be some hiccups along the way. One such challenge for Michael was leaving his family business which he joined after his MBA. Leaving a full-fledged & well-settled business to run a start-up is never that simple. Taking a risk like that requires something much more than just passion—it requires confidence. A post shared by Tripoto (@tripotocommunity) on Jul 15, 2018 at 3:30am PDT Fortunately, Michael was full of it and Anirudh, the other co-founder, was with him to start this new journey. “We felt that this (a travel journal) is something that someone should develop. Even if it's not us, someone should,” said Michael in an interview with MensXP. Such was his passion towards travelling and building a platform to make information approachable to every travel enthusiast. Michael didn't want to create something which was just focused on bookings and reviews. There is an abundance of such apps and websites. © Tripoto He wanted to create something which would concentrate on the real user experience to help people plan their trip. “We owed it to ourselves to at least give it a shot. We set a date. We said let's quit everything. We came to Delhi, took up a house and lived together. The first employees that we had all stayed with us.” That's how Tripoto was born. A post shared by Tripoto (@tripotocommunity) on Jul 13, 2018 at 2:30am PDT Tripoto is a medium which brings travellers across the world with their stories on a single platform. Launched in 2014, it provides recommendations about various places collected from travel enthusiasts like you and me. When the data is provided by users like us, we would know places actually are worth a visit. On this platform, travellers shares their experiences, itineraries, places visited and loved, places visited and not liked, places they stayed in, and everything about their trip. Tripoto helps them in creating their journal and the other users on the platform benefit by knowing their experiences and deciding where they should head next. A post shared by Tripoto (@tripotocommunity) on Jul 11, 2018 at 5:30am PDT The app works like a diary for travellers, and it's very simple to create content. If you switch on the app when you're clicking photographs, all the images get geotagged and thus form an itinerary for the user. You can also add notes under every picture. And of course, it also maps every place that you travelled. When you're done, Tripoto would compile the information and that chapter of your journal would be ready for you to see. You would be able to see your entire trip in one post. It's up to you if you want to keep it private or share it with the rest of the users and help them plan their itineraries. A post shared by Tripoto (@tripotocommunity) on Jul 11, 2018 at 2:30am PDT If a user decides to make his trip public, Tripoto would save his data for future recommendations. This Chatbot enabled app is quite user-friendly and quick. The app is for everyone, no matter if you are a gypsy-soul-solo-traveller or someone who has a joint family who travels together. You would get information based on your requirement. A post shared by Tripoto (@tripotocommunity) on Jul 9, 2018 at 3:30am PDT Today, Tripoto has 18 million active users and is growing rapidly. Their growth is at 200% year on year! Started with a small team and a philosophy that everyone in the company should have personal growth, now Tripoto has a full-fledged team of enthusiastic and more importantly, happy employees. Michael always encouraged employees to deliver their best in the field which they like, asked them to keep working hard and trusted them with the execution of their plan. This approach has made the company and its employees grow significantly. “It is all about the people for us and I think going forward also we want to have not just a user-centric approach but also an employee friendly approach,” said Michael. A post shared by Tripoto (@tripotocommunity) on Jul 8, 2018 at 4:21am PDT With 5 million unique visitors a month who are sharing 10 million photographs and creating 1 million itineraries, Tripoto is growing rapidly. 25. With five World Cup titles and two Champions Trophy wins, the Australian team, over the years, has undoubtedly established itself as one of the most successful sides in international cricket. With their strong batting line-up, fearsome bowling attack and electric fielding, the Aussies have managed to maintain the second spot in both Tests and T20I rankings. However, all their glory and reputation has taken a major hit following the shambolic turn of events in the past few weeks. If the sensational video of Cameron Bancroft caught trying to alter the condition of the ball attracted immense criticism, captain Steve Smith's admission that "it was a pre-planned move (ball-tampering) concocted by the Australian leadership group over lunch" has put the gentleman's game to shame. For a team that was caught red-handed while resorting to unfair means, Australia's decision to lodge an official complaint for the abuse they received from the South African fans on their tour, was thoroughly slammed by Michael Vaughan. It's making me chuckle the Aussies are making an official complaint about the personal abuse they are receiving ... #please !!!! #SAvAUS — Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) March 24, 2018 The former England cricketer took to Twitter and suggested that Australian players' own behavior inflamed tensions during the four-match Test series. "It's making me chuckle the Aussies are making an official complaint about the personal abuse they are receiving...#please !!!!#SAvAUS," he tweeted. But, his comments didn't go down too well with David Warner's wife Candice, whose infamous toilet tryst with New Zealand rugby star Sonny Williams in a Sydney bar back in 2007, was used by the Proteas fans to poke fun at the Australian opener. "I wasn't in a state where I didn't know what happened, but you don't think of how your actions, when you're drunk, can have an effect on your life," Candice, in 2008, said of the infamous incident where she allegedly had *** with Sonny in a toilet cubicle at the Clovelly Hotel. I'm glad it's making you laugh. — Candice Warner (@CandyFalzon) March 24, 2018 Wow so you would approve of the same treatment to your wife and 3 kids?? — Candice Warner (@CandyFalzon) March 24, 2018 Some South African supporters even reached the stadium donning Sonny Bill masks, that only served to further infuriate the Australian camp and the Warners. So when Vaughan mocked Australia's decision to lodge an official complaint against the South African fans, Candice furiously replied: "I'm glad it's making you laugh. Wow so you would approve of the same treatment to your wife and 3 kids??" she tweeted. While her comments might have silenced Vaughan, it couldn't save her husband from the wrath of Cricket Australia, who suspended their vice-captain for 12 months. The likes of Bancroft and Smith were handed a suspension for nine and 12 months respectively.
