  1. Just a couple of days back, ASUS suffered a cyber attack following which the company's update system was hacked. The hackers used the system to distribute a malware to about 1 million users using ASUS computers and laptops. Since the software update was distributed using ASUS' servers and was signed using ASUS certificate, there was no way of telling if it was a malware attack sent by hackers. Kaspersky Lab, which brought the matter to light, named the attack 'ShadowHammer', and said they would reveal more about the attack in an upcoming conference. © ASUS Unfortunately, no one could figure out what the hackers were after. But according to reports, it looks like the hackers were targeting specific ASUS customers with their MAC addresses. The update was made to install the malicious programs once one of those systems were detected. ASUS says it has fixed the issue with a security update, which the users can now download using its Live Update software tool. So, if you've updated your ASUS computer, then you should be fine. If not, then we highly recommend you do it right away. In addition to the security update, ASUS has also created an online security diagnostic tool to check if your system was affected. If you're still concerned to run the software as a precaution, then you find it right here. © Reuters To run the diagnostic tool, all you need to do is download the zip file and run the software after extraction. Do make a note that the tool will only work on ASUS computers, and running it on other systems will return an error message that reads, “Only for ASUS machine!” ASUS hasn't apologized for the mishap, and instead it said they're working to prevent such attacks from happening again in the future. The press release said, “Only a very small number of specific user group were found to have been targeted. At the same time, we have also updated and strengthened our server-to-end-user software architecture to prevent similar attacks from happening in the future.”
  2. It was a night full of drama at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur during the fourth game of the Indian Premier League in its twelfth season. While we got to see some brilliant shots being played and powerful innings being carried out by Chris Gayle and Jos Buttler, there was that one instance that sucked all the charm right out of the game. After the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) were able to put forward a more than respectable score of 184-run total in 20 overs behind Chris 'Universe Boss' Gayle's thunderous 79-run innings, it was up to Ajinkya Rahane's Rajasthan Royals (RR) to make the run-chase happen successfully, otherwise this will be Punjab's first victory in Rajasthan ever, in the history of the league. Kinni tareefan kare tuhaddi, Gayle paaji ð Describe @henrygayle's innings with one emoji!#SaddaPunjab #KXIP #RRvKXIP #VIVOIPL pic.twitter.com/CorltLx6AV — Kings XI Punjab (@lionsdenkxip) March 25, 2019 From the get-go, Rahane and Co. looked determined to keep things the way they were with no intention of letting Punjab get a one up early in the tournament. With the skipper returning to the dressing room after scoring just 27 runs, it was the second opener and English cricketer Jos Buttler who took the command and thrashed anyone and everyone who came his way, while scoring 69 in just 43 deliveries which included 10 4s and two 6s. And just like that, it's 5ï¸â£0ï¸â£ off 29 balls for @josbuttler You 'Jos' can't take your eyes off this man! ð#HallaBol #RRvKXIP #RR pic.twitter.com/hlgEwye8EE — Rajasthan Royals (@rajasthanroyals) March 25, 2019 With loss in sight for KXIP, they looked desperate to get Buttler's wicket. They tried spinners, pacers and bowled a couple of googlies as well but the Englishman remained unfazed. This is when R. Ashwin decided to do the unthinkable. In the 13th over, when Buttler was standing in the non-striker's end and was out of the crease (which all runners tend to do in order to complete the run more quickly), Ashwin went half-way into his bowling routine, stopped in the middle, turned around and knocked the bails right off the wickets right next to him. Spirit of cricket thrown out of cricket, Some1 just tell @ashwinravi99 is not playing in streets but an International game @ICC must abolish Mankad rule. If u want to get @josbuttler Out then get him "OUT". Don't use silly ways to get rid of Best player @awais_hameed #Ashwin pic.twitter.com/kgdubqBhMG — Naveed Qaiser Rana (@journalist4871) March 25, 2019 This move is infamously known as 'mankading' based on the name of one of the most controversial bowlers in the history of Indian cricket, Vinoo Mankad, who started out this unholy, unsportsmanlike practice all the way back in 1947 when he dismissed Aussie batter Bill Brown twice (once in a practice session and then again in a Test match). Anyhow, Ashwin's appeal after 'mankading' Buttler led the umpire to take the decision upstairs where the third umpire gave a decision in favour of the bowler and asked Buttler to leave the pitch. Make no mistake, 'mankading' is not an illegal move. A bowler is well within his rights to get the non-striker run-out anytime he is found to be outside of the crease. Law 41.16 a batsmen at non strikers end should not leave his ground UNTIL the bowler has released the ball! SO OUT! Lesson.. batsmen watch the bowlers release the ball! #easy #SelectDugout — Dean Jones (@ProfDeano) March 25, 2019 “No real argument on that and it was pretty instinctive. I didn't even load and he just left the crease. We ended on the right side of the coin, but I definitely think that those are game-changing moments and batsmen need to be wary of it,” Ashwin told Harsha Bhogle in the award distribution ceremony after the game. Even though the official books of cricketing rules don't deem 'mankading' as illegal, it has been frowned upon ever since Mankad carried out this practice for the very first time. It makes the bowling side look weak, desperate and it most certainly does not help them look like the gentlemen of the game. Ravichandran Ashwin has been out of action for the Indian cricket team for quite some time now and the fact that he can resort to something this grave, especially in the golden era of Indian cricket in which stars like Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are making their country proud, says a thousand words about his spirit as a sportsman. Clearly, the millions of fans of the true nature of cricket did not like the taste of Ashwin's desperate attempt to win the game, left in their mouth: Harsha you are missing the point completely & I'm disappointed in you as you always push the spirit of the game - now you condone this behaviour ? Ashwin's actions were simply disgraceful, and I hope the BCCI doesn't condone this sort of behaviour in the #IPL ! #spiritofthegame https://t.co/BsIKDBN51X — Shane Warne (@ShaneWarne) March 25, 2019 I would say to all India ex players/Pundits who are supportive of what R Ashwin did ... If @imVkohli was Batting would you be so supportive !!??? #NightAll #IPL #OnON — Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) March 25, 2019 Ashwin waited for him to get out of the crease. 3. Life is unpredictable. We never know when the biggest curveball would be thrown our way, and if we will be able to maneuver through it and come out a winner. Hawaldar Raju Rawat of 56 Engineer unit of the Indian Army was posted in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh and was a celebrated canoe player in Army before life took a you turn on him a few years ago. Hailing from Uttarakhand, Raju became a well known name after he was selected to represent India in the Asian Games finale in 2014. But things changed in 2015 when Raju was diagnosed with cancer following a bout of pain and discomfort. © Thinkstock/Getty Images Recalling the time of his diagnosis her told TOI, “I had started feeling the pain after coming back from Asia Games but could not gauge about the problem. I even attended national championships and won gold medal.” Post the diagnosis, Raju decided to recover before moving any further as a canoe player. Raju stood out of the games for the next two years, and shifted to New Delhi to get treated at the Army Hospital in the city. He finally beat cancer and got back into the sport last year in 2018. © TOI Raju gave credit to the army and his coach for their support and encouragement, that helped him to recover and get back on his feet. Raju told TOI that, ““Without their support and encouragement, I would have never made a comeback.” As on Sunday, Raju has won two bronze medal for our country in the International Canoeing Championship which had 13 participating countries. He won under the 500m C-2 and 200m C-2 category. © Thinkstock/Getty Images Raju's journey is inspiring, because not only did he fight in the face of death, but he came out a winner, and reclaimed his former glory as a trusted national level player. The army is thoroughly impressed by Raju display of valour and they have started sending him to schools and colleges to give motivational speeches. The army coach has just one thing to give credit to for Raju's success, “He is an army man and such courage is very common in army,'' said the coach, and we totally agree!
  4. Just when I thought Facebook was done screwing up its user's privacy, a new report just popped up saying that Facebook's employees had access to hundreds of millions of user passwords. Good job, Facebook! Yesterday, when an independent security journalist named Brian Krebs reported about this mistake, Facebook issued a press release to confirm the same and said it discovered the mishap during a “routine security review in January.” Here's the best part - The press release was titled “Keeping Passwords Secure”. LOL! © Reuters Krebs' report noted that anywhere between 200 to 600 million people are affected due to this mistake, which shouldn't have happened in the first place. In fact, it looks like some passwords were found in archives dating back to 2012. The social media site estimates that hundreds of millions of Facebook Lite users, tens of millions of other Facebook users, and tens of thousands of Instagram users. Looks like the issue has been fixed and it will notify everyone affected. © Pexels According to Facebook, there's no evidence that plain text passwords were exposed outside of the company, neither were they abused internally. So, it says even the affected users don't necessarily need to change their passwords, but I'd still change it if I were you. I am sure you know that this isn't the first security breach that Facebook and its users are dealing with. All we've been hearing about is Facebook and it's privacy issues. It all started with the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and it's just been a string of bad security issues. People even started dumping Facebook, which I once wondered was the right thing to do. But now, I have some serious trust issues and I wonder if it's time to dump the platform for real.
  5. Life is too short to give in to the whims and negativity that pervades the virtual space today. Trolls can be found lurking in abundance at every click of the mouse and turn people's lives into a living hell with their unsolicited hate comments and opinions. It doesn't take much for online trolls to attack unsuspecting people on social media platforms, and they don't spare the individual on the other side of the illuminated screen, whether that is a man, woman or child, or even a celebrity for that matter. The only thing a troll knows when they set out to troll the shit out of an individual is this wrong belief that they somehow have the authority and upper hand to spew hate and negativity directed at an individual. © Pinterest All of which may or may not have come from any personal impact or motivation, these trolls go about brandishing their sharp words and wound people. Though majority of people who get trolled choose to “stay mum and ignore” such nuisances, every once in a while we also come across those who step up and give the trolls a taste of their own medicine. © Twitter Recently, India Today released a preview of its latest episode of 'Jab We Met' on Twitter featuring host Rahul Kanwal and guest Ananya Birla, the heiress of the Aditya Birla Group and daughter of Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla. The short video showed Ananya, a UK club level footballer in a football faceoff showing off her skills. It's a football showdown between @ananya_birla & @rahulkanwal this weekend on #JabWeMet. Ananya is also a UK club level footballer and has given a whole new meaning to the word multi-talented. Watch the special episode tonight at 9:30 only on India Today TV. pic.twitter.com/ihKWOaqGEu — India Today (@IndiaToday) March 9, 2019 However, a Twitter user decided to take a dig at Ananya following the launch of the episode preview, by showing disregard for all of Ananya's personal merits and reducing her and her achievements to her father's legacy and wealth. Reporter reporting on millionaires daughter — GurpreetSgill (@gurpreetgill) March 10, 2019 The user left a comment stating “reporter reporting on millionaires daughter”. This didn't go with Ananya and instead of ignoring it she called out her troll and gave him a piece of her mind, by not only pointing out that every person has their individual merits to show for, but also that he is wrong in calling her father a “millionaire” since he is actually a billionaire. So? I'm human too ð we achieve things on our own esteem too and we must share that. And just btw, my dad is a billionaire not a millionaire. ðð¤ sorry not sorry âð½ https://t.co/YtX4YM05Rm — Ananya Birla (@ananya_birla) March 10, 2019 We think Ananya had the perfect response for her troll and we sure need more of such approaches when dealing with trolls who have nothing more to do with their lives than drop baseless opinions everywhere they go.
  6. After the demise of fashion giant Karl Lagerfeld, all eyes are on his cat. The cat, a red-point Birman named 'Choupette', is all set to inherit a part of the designer's multi-million dollar fortune, that will probably make her the richest cat in the world. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Choupette Lagerfeld (@choupettesdiary) on Jul 11, 2018 at 5:41pm PDT Karl Lagerfeld, fashion visionary and the Creative Director of Chanel, passed away on 19th February, and his feline companion Choupette, whom he referred to as the heiress of his fortune, will inherit a part of it. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Choupette Lagerfeld (@choupettesdiary) on Jun 18, 2017 at 10:10am PDT Not that Choupette needs the money, because she already lives an extremely lavish life and also is sort of a social media celebrity herself, with thousands of followers on Instagram and Twitter. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Choupette Lagerfeld (@choupettesdiary) on Mar 1, 2017 at 9:11am PST Choupette already has earned more than 3 million dollars herself, by doing high end modelling gigs. 7. You'd expect your bank to have a secure server since all your account details are now stored digitally. While it is annoying to forcefully select a strong password for financial accounts, you'd also expect the institution to follow the same, or in fact, more stringent protocols for data security. But, SBI took "secure" to a whole new level. A report on Wednesday revealed that the SBI forgot to secure a key server hosting sensitive information in one of its Mumbai installations and that the server might have leaked details of millions of bank accounts. The server hosted two months' data of SBI Quick, account details, balance, and even transactions. © CCN What's even more surprising is, this wasn't a hack. Nobody penetrated the system through a vulnerability. The server was simply not "password protected", and open for anyone to access. SBI has fixed the server now, but it remains uncertain whether any customer's data have been compromised. We don't even know if someone else had accessed the data before the issue got flagged. The report noted that the unsecured server was part of SBI Quick, which allowed the bank customers to send a message or make a call to carry out basic banking functions. Since SBI Quick is associated with the user's mobile number, the data leak could be used by identity thieves to carry out fraud transactions. Even ransom demands are a possibility. © Reuters The data breach was spotted by a security researcher (unnamed) and verified by Karan Saini, the researcher who previously found a leak in India's Aadhaar database. In cases like these is when the country requires a strong law on data protection. The Aadhaar compulsion is long gone, but the accountability to use "data" and "secure" data still exists. If a company or a person is collecting data, it needs to be their responsibility to protect it, and use it in accordance with the user's consent. © SBI In this case, SBI needs to be held accountable for the loss a user may incur. And, when strong data protection laws exist, everyone will have to take data security seriously. The issues cannot be just swept under the rug. With Inputs from TechCrunch
  8. Quick fixes sell like hotcakes in the fitness industry. People would throw all their savings at a magical product that promises things like abs in 30 days or a belt you wear and do nothing and it will melt the fat away and the likes. The companies selling these know that customers would go to any lengths and spend their money if they are made to believe in magical solutions. They often run adverts having pseudo fitness experts who would boast about the products so much that you will believe that the product is the only thing they have used in their life to stay in shape. They pick on the insecurities and emotions of the people so well that the products that would not even be valued for a couple of bucks by someone who knows a thing or two about fitness, these gullible people would end up paying thousands for them, making it a very profitable business. Some of these products are still selling today. Here are the top six stupid fitness products: 1. Slim Sauna Belt © Flipkart Sweat = fat crying is NOT a thing. It's a myth. The models wearing it are in a darn good shape and that's because they don't wear slim sauna belt. This product has been introduced a decade ago and has generated at least $150 million in sales. 2. Six Pad Training Gear Get a famous celebrity, ask them to put it on and shoot some videos and photos, and then market it to the people. © YouTube BOOM! Millions of dollars. If you ever use this trick, I am taking a royalty for the idea. Now anyone who has followed Cristiano Ronaldo over the years knows how the guy has stayed in ridiculously good shape over the years. This shitty training gear would not even make the top 100 reasons he is fit. 3. Facial Fitness PAO Another bizarre product endorsed by Cristiano Ronaldo for yet another aspect of his features, the jawline, which have no relevance to the product in question. © YouTube How is the product so bizarre? Watch this ad: Want a good jawline? Drop your body fat and have a genetically good jawline. 4. The Thigh Master Another absurd product that has generated over $100 million in sales. Why? Nobody knows why. Probably the QVC ads targeted to the people. Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock and Jimmy Fallon made quite a mockery of this product on the Tonight Show. © CNBC, Youtube 5. The Shake Weight Incidentally, another of those bizarre products the Rock and Jimmy Fallon made fun of was the shake weight. This weird shaky dumbbell had generated $40 million in sales as per a report in 2010 and it still continues to sell. © Quora This was sold mostly to women who incidentally almost never picked up a dumbbell in their life to understand how a dumbbell works. 6. The 6 Second Abs Another selling pro tip from this article, find a bunch of lazy people and promise them a beach body without moving an inch from the couch. What does it lead to? The sound of ka-ching. © Quora Anyone who has worked for or gotten abs in their lives know the amount of hard work it requires. In 6 seconds, sure. Give me two of those. 9. History was created in India yesterday and it is being said that this can be a move towards real change, which would put the nation on the world map as a progressive torchbearer. We believe that the journey has only just begun and there still remains a long journey ahead of us, in terms of securing the rights of the LGBTQ community. Nonetheless, the ripples of change shall be felt in the years to come and push the nation and its youth to move towards building a more welcome and compassionate society, that treats all its members equally and ensures they get the respect and love they deserve. © Reuters However, while we rejoice over the verdict today, we must not forget the incredible people who deserve all the credit for this monumental decision and that has to be the five-member constitutional bench that ruled out the prolific verdict yesterday and changed the fate of millions. Meet the five heroic judges who upheld the essence of justice and liberation in its truest sense: 1. Justice Indu Malhotra © Twitter An empanelled lawyer, who sought protection for the LGBT community from sexual harassment, Justice Indu Malhotra also happens to be the first female lawyer who was upgraded directly from the Bar as a Supreme Court Judge. She became the second woman who occupied the chair of a senior advocate in the Supreme Court, after Justice Leila Seth. Justice Indu Malhotra also spearheaded SC's 2015 verdict that ensured unmarried mothers could have legal guardianship of their children without the father's consent. Upon yesterday's verdict, she said that “history owes an apology to the members of the LGBT community for all the persecution they had to go through.” 2. Justice DY Chandrachud © TOI Justice Chandrachud is the former Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and is also a former judge of the Bombay High Court. He was also a part of the nine-member bench that declared Right to Privacy as a fundamental right in the country. Yesterday, he stated that this verdict was long overdue for the discrimination being meted out to a community, for which the people sought a firm remedy. 3. Justice Deepak Misra © Twitter The current Chief Justice of India, who will be remembered to have survived one of the Indian judiciary's most turbulent periods. He was the head of the bench that delivered the death sentence to Nirbhaya's killers, as well as the bench that dropped Yakub Memon's plea to hold off his execution. Post the declaration of the verdict, Justice Misra stated that “denial of self-expression is akin to inviting death.” That's just about the correct way to put it. 4. Justice AM Khanwilkar © barandbench The former Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court, Justice Khanwilkar was on the bench that allowed medical termination for the pregnancies of two minor rape victims in Delhi and Bangalore. He was also on the panel of judges that dissolved the petition seeking a ban on Malayali author Hareesh S.'s novel 'Meesha'. Yesterday, he said that Section 377 has been felled only partially and while the law shall not apply to consensual same-*** acts, it shall still be applicable to forced sexual acts without consent. 5. Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman © YouTube Son of renowned jurist Fali Nariman, Justice Nariman was earlier practising as a senior counsel at the Supreme Court. He was part of the bench that disposed of the Cyber Law which gave the police extensive powers to arrest anyone deemed to be posting “offensive comments” and was also on the chair that delivered the monumental judgement against Triple Talaq. Yesterday, he stated that the nation must recognise that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and the government must take adequate steps to raise awareness and eliminate the stigma attached to the LGBT community.
  10. Many phones from major companies like ASUS, Essential, LG and ZTE are shipping with severe vulnerabilities out of the box, according to a report by cyber-security firm Kryptowire. Android is the most targeted mobile OS, firstly because of its huge user base, and secondly, because OEMs usually install their own skins on top, without keeping security in mind. Apps are usually the easiest way to gain access to your phone, a link you may have clicked, or a .apk file you may have installed could be syphoning your data in the background. This has been the core reason why Google has always recommended its users to install apps from trusted sources or the Play Store. © Pexels Kryptowire has recognised 38 different vulnerabilities that can allow spying and factory reset to be loaded onto 25 Android phones. There are at least 10 devices sold across the major US carriers that come pre-loaded with bugs that are a security threat. The list of Android vendors affected includes Asus, Essential, LG, Nokia, Sony, and ZTE. Angelos Stavrou, Kryptowire's CEO, and Ryan Johnson, the firm's director of research, disclosed their findings at the DEFCON hacker conference on Friday. © MensXP "All of these are vulnerabilities that are prepositioned. They come as you get the phone out the box," Stavrou said. "That's important because consumers think they're only exposed if they download something that's bad." Essential has confirmed that they have fixed the vulnerability after Kryptowire shared their findings, while LG has said it's working on fixing these loop-holes. Even ASUS has confirmed that they are working on patching the security concerns raised and will be pushing out OTA updates soon. © YouTube Kryptowire says the issues are at the firmware level, as malicious apps from the Google Play store too can cause a lot of damage. The ASUS ZenFone Live is said to be the most affected one, as it exposes the user's entire data and a complete system takeover is possible including taking screenshots and video recordings of a user's screen and making phone calls. If you own any of these phones, you should install OTA updates as soon as possible in the coming few weeks. Running an anti-malware app won't be of any help here, as the loop-holes are at the firmware level. Source: CNET
  11. Learning a foreign language is not an easy task. It takes a lot of time, effort and dedication to learn a new language and be fluent in it. I am sorry but asking for 'wo-tah' instead of water does not count as learning a foreign language, it's just a fake accent. Language classes were a huge deal back in school and had most of us not bunked those lessons to watch movies with our friends, we would have learned something new by now, or at least could have gotten the world talking about us, just like how they are praising this Chinese woman right now. © Twitter What can be so special or unique about a Chinese woman talking about the Great Wall of China, that people are watching the video on loop? Her impeccable Tamil speaking skills. While most of us can't even speak our native language fluently, she made speaking in Tamil look like child's play for everyone watching the video. © Reuters Anand Mahindra, whose Twitter account is like a goldmine when it comes to looking for unique extraordinary talent, found and shared this video with the caption, "Not easy to learn the accent & cadence of the language but this Chinese lady seems to have conquered the Great Wall of Tamil." Thanks for this video Ravi. Fun start to a Monday. Not easy to learn the accent & cadence of the language but this Chinese lady seems to have conquered the Great Wall of Tamil. Have to ask my buddy @MM_Murugappan if he approves..ð pic.twitter.com/h3V8cr30Gm — anand mahindra (@anandmahindra) July 30, 2018 Apart from her flawless Tamil speaking skills, people even loved her traditional attire (off-white Anarkali with a red dupatta). Although the way she spoke wasn't colloquial and looked like its straight from a textbook, we are really impressed with her efforts. I wish I had paid more attention to my foreign language classes, than on the food in the canteen!
