  1. This is one myth that just refuses to die. A layman knows a simple fact that he/she needs to exercise hard and eat good to lose weight. Though this line itself has quite a lot of loose ends, we will not get technical about it. But this simple understanding has got a lot complicated now, for most people. One stupid complication which has come out of it is the DIET: EXERCISE ratio. There's No Diet To Exercise Ratio © Unsplash There are clearly two camps, in here. First one is the group which supports exercise and claims it to be the one-in-all, end-in-all concept to a fit body. Then there is the other camp, the now dominating one, that is, the diet camp, which consists of primarily the dieticians, and some common trainers and people. For them it's the diet which matters the most. Worse, they claim that even if you don't exercise, a good diet will cover it up all. It is mainly the diet protagonists which have made these ratios of 70:30, 80:20, 75:25 etc. wherein the greater part is taken up by the diet. Now if you ask them a simple question “how did you come down to this ratio?” The answer is either a blank stare with a confused look on the face, which if you closely observe means “what do you mean by 'why'?” Or, it is a common generic answer for many such questions i.e. “everyone says the same thing.” © Unsplash Similarly, when you ask dieticians, as to where they got this stupid ratio from, they simply have no answer. This is not a scientifically designed ratio based on studies. This is simply a self-made ratio. Understand this thing, for a dietician the primary earning is through diet recommendations. If she tells you that diet is not of much importance, or is of equal importance as exercising, she has a fear of losing her customers. Because dieticians are taking money to design a diet for you, they will of course emphasize on diet more. It's their bread and butter. The ratio is always one, has been one and it remains the same. The correct Exercise & Diet ratio is 100:100. Yes, you read it right. Its 100% diet, 100% exercise & overall movement, 100% sleep and relaxation. If any of the components takes a hit in any way, the others will surely suffer. Michele Olson, PhD, professor of physical education and exercise science at Auburn University at Montgomery, Alabama, US, says: “Yes, you can lose weight with diet alone, but exercise is an important component. Without it, only a portion of your weight loss is from fat — you're also stripping away muscle and bone density. Since working out stimulates growth of those metabolic tissues, losing weight through exercise means you're burning mostly fat Are 'Abs' Really Made In The Kitchen? © Unsplash If you ask me about the statement “abs are made in the kitchen”, I would like to restate it, “abs are made in the kitchen, after you return from the gym”. Diet is extremely important, and there is no doubt about this, but then lazy snob, eating less sitting on a sofa, will never ever be healthy or fit, just by being on a diet, neither can a person who is eating and exercising perfectly, survive without proper sleep and recuperation. Even the studies have shown the same, it's a complete package. Human body doesn't work in parts. 2. The trailer of Sonam and Anil Kapoor's upcoming movie 'Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga' is finally out and it is absolutely nothing like how we expected it to be. In fact, it is better than that. Before we dissect the whole trailer, let's watch it first. So the trailer initially makes you think that okay, another Punjabi 'kudi' and her family trying to push her into a matrimonial alliance. There is also the classic 'Gur Naal Ishq Mitha' song to make you believe it is another quintessential romantic movie. Towards the end of the trailer it finally hits you that it actually is the most unexpected romance of the year! This is the fresh, beautiful, same-*** love story that our country, and our society needed right now. © Vinod Chopra films The movie follows the thought trail of #letlovebe and that's exactly what we love about the trailer. 3. When it comes to being a Casanova, most of you would name Barney Stinson from 'How I Met Your Mother', while some of you would name Joey Tribbiani from 'Friends'. But there was a man who did it all with barely any effort and knew how to use his strengths. Charlie Harper from 'Two and a Half Men! The Man, the legend, the myth! We can't completely call it a fictional character, as Charlie Sheen, who played Charlie Harper, was not that different from his on-screen avatar in real life. Perhaps that's why he just nailed the role. ***, booze, drugs, and gambling are the character's hobby. In a world which is full of competition, Charlie picked up girls better than the guys in deodorant advertisements. Let's see what we can learn from him: 1. Live Like There's No Tomorrow © Warner Bros. If one thing Charlie knew apart from picking up women was how to party. The man drank like a fish and had a life with no regrets. Be it women, pot, cigars, drinks, he did it all with an open heart. But he never let it affect his work. The man knew the importance of money and always managed to make it in abundance. The lesson here is, live like there's no tomorrow but earn like you might live for a hundred years. 2. Use Your Assets Wisely © Warner Bros. Women find kids adorable and Charlie certainly knew it. The man used his nephew to pick up women countless times. Be it in a grocery store or convincing him to take belly dancing lessons, just so he could have a date with the instructor, he didn't miss one single chance. If you want to succeed in life, know what your assets are and use them wisely. 3. Relationships © Warner Bros. Most of us fall with the idea of being in a relationship, and not with the person. Charlie taught us to wait, have fun, and eventually, you'll know when the right person comes along. It's better to wait than to settle down with the wrong person. Be sure that you want to actually spend the rest of your life with the person you're going to propose. Don't rush into anything. 4. Family Is Everything © Warner Bros. No matter how much he made fun of his brother, he always took care of him. He even broke up his engagement for his brother's sake. And the way he was a role model to his nephew, despite his shortcomings, was commendable. Charlie's relationship with his mother wasn't smooth and yet he managed to be there for her, every time she actually needed him. For him, if you look deeply, HIS family came first. Same should be the case with you. 5. Sense of Humour © Warner Bros. We are aware of Chandler Bing's sense of humour & sarcasm but if anyone used it correctly to pick up women, it was Charlie. Be it making fun of someone, or making a woman laugh or a cruel comeback to his mother's comments, he was quite the master at it. © Warner Bros. Watch the series, you'll definitely pick up some funny pick-up lines. 6. The I-Don't-Give-A-****-Attitude © Warner Bros. No matter what happened, Charlie always did what he wanted to do. He was single on his own terms, got engaged on his own terms and broke the engagement on his own terms. People called him a degenerate man-whore who fell into a pot of money, but he didn't care. He lived the way he wanted to and was never bothered by the fact that what 'people' might say.
  4. The one word that the fitness industry is obsessed with and unanimously agrees upon as good is 'protein'. Want to build muscle? Protein. Want to lose fat? Eat more protein. Want to stay the same as you are and maintain your fitness? Eat protein. Protein is definitely important but it is more important to know what intake is for your goal. How much exactly of this magical macronutrient do you actually need? The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) according to health organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) is 0.8 to 1gm per kilo of your body weight. For example, an 80-kilo male will require 64 to 80 grams of protein per day to complete his RDA. Again, this is just for the average Joe who wants to stay healthy. In your case, it is not so. You are reading this article as you have a fitness goal like building muscle or losing fat while preserving your muscle mass. In these cases, it is logical that you are going to need more protein. © YouTube How much more exactly? Let's discuss two goals here. One is to lose fat while preserving lean body mass and the other is to gain muscle. Goal 1: Lose Fat While Preserving Lean Body Mass In these cases, studies have shown that higher protein intakes are associated with higher satiety, adherence to the diet, fat loss, and greater diet satisfaction compared to lower protein diets. When your goal is to lose fat, protein dosages between 1.8 and 2.4 grams per kilo of body weight have shown to have better results compared to doses lower than these. For the 80-kilo dude, this will translate to 145 to 190 grams of protein per day. The satiating quality of protein as a macronutrient makes higher intakes beneficial as you will feel full and the chance of dietary slips will be greatly reduced, considering hunger can be a persistent problem when you diet down to single-digit body fat ranges. Goal 2: Build Muscle © YouTube To gain muscle, studies have shown that lower protein dosages compared to the fat loss protein dosage are enough to build on muscle. When your goal is to build muscle, protein in the range of 1.4 to 1.8 grams per kilogram of body weight will do the job. The 80-kilo dude will need 110 to 145 grams of protein to build muscle. For building muscle, you need to eat excess calories and having a relatively higher protein intake can defeat the purpose as the satiety factor may in turn make you eat lesser calories, which can be a hindrance to gaining muscle or any weight. To summarize the article and give takeaway points regarding protein intake, here are the ranges to aim for: General health - 0.8 to 1 gram per kilogram of your body weight. Lose fat and preserve muscle - 1.8 to 2.4 grams per kilogram of your body weight. Gain muscle - 1.4 to 1.8 grams per kilogram of your body weight.
