  1. Xiaomi India may have struck gold with the new Mi Notebook Ultra as it has everything I need from a laptop. In fact, Xiaomi went a step further and fixed everything that I considered to be problematic about last year’s laptop lineup from the company. This time, it has a webcam, it has thunderbolt ports and to top it off, the Mi Notebook Ultra has a spectacular display. I’ve been using Xiaomi’s latest laptop for my work for the past few weeks and here’s how I feel about it: Design From afar, the Mi Notebook Ultra looks very much like Apple’s MacBook Pro. That’s not surprising though as Xiaomi has been borrowing many design cues from the Cupertino giant for a range of its portfolio. However, I do have to say that this is by far the best design implementation by Xiaomi so far. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla The laptop has the same all-metal aluminium chassis and branding as Apple’s MacBooks that sometimes even fooled me when the two laptops were put next to each other. However, the Mi Notebook Ultra is fairly lighter and has more rounded edges than its MacBook counterparts. The laptop uses a 15.6-inch IPS LCD display which has a refresh rate of 90Hz. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla As for ports, Xiaomi finally decided to use Thunderbolt 4 and USB-C ports for data transfers and charging purposes. On the right side, you will find a USB-A 3.2 port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. On the left side, you will find the two USB-C ports, an HDMI 2.0 port and another USB-A 3.2 port. While I do like the fact that Xiaomi has two USB-C ports on the laptop, I would have preferred one of them to be on the right side. This would give users the freedom to use either port for charging or transferring according to how they are positioned in proximity to a power outlet. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla One of the biggest missed opportunities was that the laptop does not come with an ethernet port. While that will be disappointing to many, Xiaomi instead opted to offer WiFI 6 connectivity. There is also a 720p webcam on the top bezel of the display which was entirely missing from last year’s models. And finally, the Mi Notebook Ultra also has a fingerprint sensor on the top right corner that is embedded into the power button. It’s very similar to Apple’s implementation of the fingerprint sensor, however in the Mi Notebook Ultra’s case, it is far more prominent. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla While the overall design of the laptop is a major improvement from last year’s models, Xiaomi did commit a cardinal sin by using downward-firing speakers. When using the speakers on the Mi Notebook Ultra, you will notice that every sound is heavily muffled and isn’t clear even one bit. If you like to watch movies and TV shows on your laptop, I highly recommend investing in good earphones or a Bluetooth speaker. I would have preferred if Xiaomi used some form of upward or side-firing speakers for clarity purposes but that still remains a dream. Overall, the design of the Mi Notebook Ultra is at par with most premium laptops released in 2021. I genuinely prefer the premium design of the laptop this year as it gets many things right. Sure, there are minor gripes such as downward-firing speakers and no USB-C port on the right side of the laptop, but I can live with these shortcomings. Display The first thing you will fall in love with is the 15.6-inch IPS LCD display (3200 x 2000 pixels) the Mi Notebook Ultra uses. In fact, I still can’t believe how Xiaomi managed to use such a high-grade panel given how much it costs. The display is perfect for watching video content and browsing the web which wasn’t the case with the previous laptop. The display is also very bright which means you can easily use it at an outdoor cafe without straining your eyes or facing any glare. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla While the colour accuracy is fantastic for casual video viewing, it isn’t entirely accurate enough for graphic designers. Sure, if you have some casual video/image editing to do then this display will get the job done. However, even though the display is calibrated for full sRGB coverage, I would still recommend the MacBook Pro lineup or an external display with better colour accuracy for professional graphic designers. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla The display has a refresh rate of 90Hz which can be toggled by using the ‘Fn+S’ shortcut. While the laptop isn’t meant for hardcore gaming, you can take full advantage of higher frames in games like DOTA 2 and CS: GO. I found it most useful when watching F1 online as it was a far smoother experience than I expected. If you like to watch a lot of sports on your laptop, it doesn’t hurt to have a higher refresh rate display to avoid aliasing issues. Keyboard and Trackpad © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla The Mi Notebook Ultra also uses one of the nicest keyboards I’ve seen on a Windows laptop. While it is a chiclet keyboard, it has a 1.5 mm key travel that makes typing a delight. The keyboard isn’t noisy either which is great for home/office use. You get used to the keyboard right away as it isn’t cramped up, however I did feel that the Redmibook offers better comfort. You will also be happy to know that the keyboard is now backlit which means you can now work in darker environments without any additional light. Having said that, there are only two levels of backlighting to choose from. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla Xiaomi has also taken criticism of last year's laptop's trackpad well and has definitely improved on it further. The trackpad does not feel cheap nor does it have any friction. Last year’s laptop caused my fingers to get fatigued after using the trackpad for five minutes, but that is not the case with the Mi Notebook Ultra. Having said that, I would have liked the trackpad to be slightly larger than what it is right now. Xiaomi has also improved the clicking function of the trackpad with this model as last year’s model felt outright awkward to use. Performance The Mi Notebook Ultra is powered by an 11th Gen i7-11370H processor that has a maximum clock speed of 4.8GHz. The processor has been paired with up to 16GB of 3200 MHz RAM and up to 512GB of NVMe SSD. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla For professionals and college students, the Mi Notebook Ultra’s performance is ideal for handling moderate tasks such as running several Chrome tabs, Excel Sheets and Microsoft office. The laptop can handle multiple apps running in the background fairly well and it doesn’t get too hot either. I could also easily run Adobe’s Photoshop fairly well and did not experience any hard crashes or throttling during the review period. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla In PC Mark 10’s benchmark test, the Mi Notebook Ultra scored a respectable 4901 and 5297 in Geekbench 5’s multi-core benchmark test. The PC Mark 10 test is a bit more reliable representation of the laptop’s capabilities as it emulates a typical workflow of an average user. The test runs multiple Office apps, GIMP and video-conferencing apps to determine the overall score. As for the 512GB NVMe SSD, in CrystalDiskMark the laptop scored read and write speeds of 2,394MB/s and 1,549MB/s respectively. Battery Life The Mi Notebook Ultra comes with a 70Wh battery that can last up to 12 hours according to Xiaomi. Realistically, with typical workflows, the laptop lasts for about 8 hours in total which isn’t bad considering my workflow is slightly more demanding than the average user. What’s great is that the laptop supports 65W PD charging which means you aren’t restricted to using the charger supplied by the company. In fact, I didn’t even bother taking out the charger and instead used the Stufcool Centurion instead. The laptop would get a 50% charge in about 48 minutes which is quite impressive considering the size of the battery. The Final Say For Rs 63,999, Xiaomi has got an incredible laptop on offer for almost every type of user. The Mi Notebook Ultra offers reliable performance, premium design and a beautiful display that should ideally cost more. In fact, the competition offers laptops with the same configuration for a much higher price which makes the Mi Notebook Ultra a much better option to consider. If you are looking for a premium Windows laptop that does not burn a hole in your pocket, the Mi Notebook Ultra is the ultimate choice right now. View the full article
  2. One of the most difficult things I remember while growing up in the 2000 is carrying an 8-kg laptop to college every day, over and above those big, fat engineering books. Now you would say it's not really a big deal, but trust me, when your back has to carry heavy equipment day in and day out, it is a big deal. But things have changed now. For better! Recently, I got my hands on the brand new Asus ZenBook, which is, wait for it.... Is smaller than an A4 size paper! 1. Ultralight & Ultrathin Asus I have the ZenBook 13 UX33 that weighs a feather-light 1.19kg. And as I have already mentioned, it is as small (or smaller) than an A4 size paper, about 279x210 mm. Additionally, it is only 13.9mm thin, and thanks to magnesium-aluminum alloy, this laptop is about 33% lighter than the standard alloy used in laptops. This always let you travel in ease without putting any pressure on your back. 2. Smart And Comfortable ErgoLift Design For Better Typing Asus The ZenBook series comes with a full-size backlit keyboard that gives a seamless typing experience in any lighting condition. Crafted for optimum comfort, this laptop is equipped with 1.4mm key travel distance, and a glass covering for smooth control. It also features palm-rejection technology and supports multi-finger gestures and handwriting. 3. NumberPad Touchpad Asus ZenBook 13 introduces the exclusive new NumberPad - a touchpad with a switchable numeric keypad for enhanced data entry. What's more? The touchpad retains its cursor function, even when the NumberPad is activated. 4. All-Day Battery To The Rescue ZenBook 13 features a 50Wh lithium-polymer battery with a battery life of up to 14 hours, that is a saviour for on-the-go lifestyle. Besides, lithium-polymer batteries have a lifespan that's up to 3x longer than standard batteries. This takes away a lot of worries about deteriorating battery performance. 5. Military-Grade Durability Asus ZenBook is ultra-tough, and it goes through an extreme test regime that includes extended tests for operation in harsh environments including extreme altitudes, temperatures and humidity. 6. Extraordinary Elegance Asus The ZenBook series is available in Royal Blue and Icicle Silver enhanced with a contrasting Rose Gold trim panel above the keyboard for an extra touch of luxury. I think Asus ZenBook series has it all covered in terms of high-end design, durability, super-fast performance and comfort. While I have the UX333, the other two variants include UX433 and UX533.
