MS Dhoni is too old to still be playing for Team India. He can no longer hit the ball at will. The finisher that once enthralled fans is finished now. Just look at the number of deliveries he eats up in his innings. He's surely a liability for the Indian team. Dhoni is just occupying a Team India spot which can very well be used to accommodate a player that actually deserves it. Surely, we can't win the ICC World Cup with Dhoni in the side. All these comments haunted the former Indian captain in 2018, making it almost imperative for Dhoni to call it quits. But, there is a reason why this man is called 'Captain Cool'. The Jharkhand cricketer is one of those rare breeds of cricketers who thrive under pressure. You knock them down, they get right back up. You push them back, they come forward with rediscovered strength. For someone who remains India's most popular and definitely the most scrutinised cricketer (barring Sachin Tendulkar), Dhoni was out of form and sorts before he travelled to Australia for the three-match ODI series earlier this January. With the critics watching his every move, waiting for him to fall, right before embarking on 'we hate Dhoni' bandwagon; the 37-year-old had everything to lose - his career, place in the side and, more importantly, a chance to play the 2019 ICC World Cup. © Reuters But, in the past four months, Dhoni has not only managed to silence his critics with a brilliant showing, but has rightly made the World Cup spot his own. More recently, his exploits in the twelfth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) almost powered Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to their fourth title, if it wasn't for a rampaging Mumbai Indians (MI) brigade. Apart from a rediscovered form in his batting, Dhoni has so many other roles in the team which makes him a vital cog in India's dreams of capturing their third World Cup title. Here's a look at what makes Dhoni a key ingredient in India's title aspirations at this year's World Cup: Middle-Order Stability © Reuters Unlike the T20 version, the ODI format is an extension that cannot be dictated just by hammering the ball out of the park. It demands the batsmen to rotate the strike and stitch crucial partnerships in the middle overs before launching the all mighty attack on the opposition bowlers in the final stages of the game. While India might boast of a strong batting line-up, no one is best suited to stabilise the innings than Dhoni. The Jharkhand cricketer might not be the finisher we once knew, but, as India's batting line-up evolved over the years, so did Dhoni's role. From being the most consistent finishers in the sport, Dhoni has now adapted to his new role of being a sheet anchor for the team. The new-age MSD allows the batting to revolve around him as he holds the fort at the other end. And, once the game nears its end, Dhoni swaps his role and the finisher takes over. Going into the World Cup, India have thrived on the form of their top three, with the middle-order yet to be tested, which makes Dhoni's presence furthermore crucial for Kohli's men in England & Wales. Technique does not end with batting alone, as noticed with wicket-keepers who are equally expected to follow certain guidelines to reap better returns. Amongst others, one major rule related to wicket-keeping or fielding, in general, is inertia. With the ball travelling to the fielder's hands at a rapid pace, a cricketer is expected to catch the ball and let it slide with the momentum for some time before resisting the motion. The idea is to absorb the momentum of the ball slowly in a bid to avoid chances of it popping out of their hands. While most wicket-keepers follow this tactic against seamers and spinners, Dhoni follows a completely different ideology. He believes in attacking the ball and throwing his hands at the stumps as quickly as possible. When he keeps to the spinners, Dhoni moves his hands towards the ball and - without moving his hand back for even a second - guides it to the stumps. So what does he achieve by doing that? As noted on one of his stumpings, a reaction time of a staggering 0.38 seconds. When it comes to run-outs, Dhoni has evolved from traditional techniques even more. While the age-old wicket-keeping technique would state that a keeper needs to be behind the stumps to collect a throw, the Jharkhand cricketer feels otherwise. Rather than standing behind, Dhoni stands right in front and flicks the ball onto the stumps using the momentum of the throw. That technique might not be listed in any rule book, but the Indian wicket-keeper has made it work over the years. Keeping a close watch on the contest between the bowler and the batsman, Dhoni is often seen setting up the field according to the situation. Such has been his know-how of the game that Dhoni, almost like a seer, ends up predicting the shots which are yet to be played by the opposition batsmen. There have been numerous instances where, after anticipating the batsmen's shot selection, the former Indian captain's field settings have led to a breakthrough. And, that added skill-set is likely to come in handy for India in England & Wales. Guiding The Bowlers © Reuters The close proximity of a wicket-keeper with the bowlers allows them to pass on vital information about the batsman's play. If the batsman falters in footwork, the wicket-keeper is probably the first one to notice and advise the bowler to use it to his own good. And, Dhoni is no different. While most teams have struggled to properly use the review, India seems to be doing pretty damn well - thanks to MSD. Such has been his awareness behind the stumps that he has developed a knack for getting the review right, almost every time. His impeccable judgement on the DRS has aided Team India on multiple occasions in the past. While many of his teammates, including captain Virat Kohli, have struggled to identify a potential opportunity, Dhoni has made DRS his own forte. Back in 2009, BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) was the most trending tool for instant messaging. But, it was restricted to BlackBerry phones and relied on a PIN system to communicate with others. SMS (Short Messaging Service) was still actively used by most, and till date, a character limit drastically reduces the amount of data we can send in one go. For multimedia files, MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) or email were the only options. Sure, web messengers like Yahoo and Facebook Chat were incredibly popular, but you had to rely on a PC or laptop to use them. Instant messaging wasn't new, but "mobile" instant messaging was. And don't forget, every SMS or MMS incurred a charge. © The Global Mail Then came WhatsApp, an instant messaging application that realized the potential of Apple's App Store and leveraged it to the fullest. Within a short span of time, the service was a hit. The ability to immediately send messages over the internet meant no more additional SMS charges, and your data pack had you covered. In fact, WhatsApp was a paid service for a brief period due to the massive growth. The app's growth has been unmatchable, and it's no surprise Facebook acquired it for an unimaginable US$ 19 billion. Let that sink in, an app-based instant messenger was sold for $19 BILLION. How Did It Revolutionize Instant Messaging? © iSource 1. It focused on simplicity: BBM had a PIN system and worked only with BlackBerry phones. Hence, if you wanted to ping someone, you'd first need their PIN (which just wasn't easy to remember). Also, being restricted to one mobile platform meant you'd still have to rely on other services. Lastly, it needed a separate BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) connection from your telecom operator. All these hurdles were instantly removed by WhatsApp since it relied on your mobile number as a unique ID. Hence, anyone with your contact details could also reach out on WhatsApp. The app also operated over a normal internet connection and required no additional offerings. © MensXP 2. Focus on messaging: A lot of competing apps over the last decade have started out as messengers, but lost focus when they tried to do multiple things at once. WhatsApp always stuck to their core product - messaging. Hence, the UI remained simple and straightforward. A whole generation that skipped usage of computers were able to adapt and learn the simple app. © WhatsApp 3. Reliability: WhatsApp has suffered multiple outages, but none of them has been over an extended duration of time. The users know the app may get slow during peak hours of the new year, but it'll still work in a few minutes. There's almost nothing that WhatsApp can't transfer. And, its compression helps in reducing storage requirements as well. Emails often don't sync easily with a low network or slow data speeds, but WhatsApp will come through. © WhatsApp 5. Don't type, just speak: In 2015, WhatsApp rolled out voice calling as an in-built feature, followed by video calls. This meant you could not only send texts but also talk in real-time without incurring additional charges from the telecom operator. © WhatsApp 6. Going cross-platform: Last, but the most important factor. WhatsApp started out with iOS, but was quick to adapt to upcoming Android OS. Then, it gave a shot to Symbian, BlackBerry OS, Windows Phone, and more. This ensured that a maximum number of users were covered. By the time BBM opened up, WhatsApp had already snatched the throne. Even today, Apple's own iMessage is used regularly in selective markets only. And a closed-door policy never works for anyone. Let's hope upcoming RCS standards are able to bridge this gap and offer an option by-default to all users. © WhatsApp Critics would argue that WhatsApp has always been comparatively slow in rolling out new features, and they are right. But when you have a user base of a billion people, sudden additions are a risky move. And WhatsApp has always played safe. Like I said, the service has a sharp focus on "messaging", and doesn't wander off. BBM had encryption years before WhatsApp did, Telegram and Skype offered video calls much earlier than WhatsApp did, and even stickers took an extremely long time to come. But, consider WhatsApp to be a government policy. With so many different clients involved, the company needs to think about everyone, right from a budget phone user to a flagship user. That too across multiple platforms. © TIME While WhatsApp has made communication quick and simple, it has been mired in controversy recently. The ease of use also meant the uncontrolled spread of fake news and unverified messages. These "forwards" have already costed many their lives due to mob justice, and the service has done little to curb this epidemic. On one side, its encryption ensures that everyone's messages stay private. But it also means monitoring or moderation is impossible. And the platform has been under immense pressure from government bodies lately. The service has tried to bring in a few countermeasures like limiting forwards, but it's like using a bucket of water to douse a forest fire. -

But, as all good things come to an end, the trio of these superstars, too, have faced hardships in recent times. From injury concerns to slump in form, the likes of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are still the players to beat. But, it's safe to say, they are no longer 'the invincibles' they once were. The ongoing Australian Open has once again sparked the great debate whether ageing Federer can still continue to prove his mettle following his Round of 16 loss to a 20-year-old. It also turned our focus on the next generation superstars who can very well go on to replace the old guard in the sport. Here's a look at four upcoming talents who can enthrall tennis fans as new-age superstars: Stefanos Tsitsipas © AP Back in 2001, when a young Federer defeated Sampras in Wimbledon, it was termed as the change of guard. And now, another change of guard is in the offing as the young Stefanos Tsitsipas stunned Federer in the fourth round of the Australian Open 4th yesterday. The Greek had become the talk of the town after he defeated four players amongst the Top 10 in Rogers Cup last summer. He began his charge by beating No. 8 Dominic Thiem in the second round. Then, it was No. 10 Novak Djokovic, No. 3 Alexander Zverev and sixth seed Kevin Anderson who all ran into a resilient Tsitsipas. His commendable run finally came to an end in the summit clash where he was defeated by king of clay Rafael Nadal. But, despite his defeat, the youngster undoubtedly made a mark with a fine showing. Now, in the Australian Open, the 21-year-old is looking to repeat his heroics as he reached the Quarter-finals. His triumph over the 'Swiss ace' highlighted his capabilities on the court. And, for the sake of tennis, let's hope he continues to perform with same enthusiasm in times ahead and keeps surprising us with his talent. Recently turned 21, Tiafoe, continued his fine form in the Australian Open as he recorded a stunning win over fifth seed Kevin Anderson in the first round, earning the ticket to the Quarter-finals on his 21st birthday by defeating Grigor Dimitrov in the 4th round. Recent burst of the young American with an arsenal of screaming forehands and blistering serves, surely puts him into consideration for the next big thing in tennis. His win over Nadal came in Rogers Cup in front of his home crowd, where he became the youngest player to reach a Masters semi-final; later delighting the New York crowd when he reached The US Open fourth round. The tennis pundits even declared him the third favourite to win at the Flushing Meadows after he entered the last 16. Despite having a bad form over the past 6 months, he still has achieved a lot at his age and is expected to be in the big four of the Next Gen. Alexander Zverev © AP Alexander Zverev had a dream end to the year 2018, defeating Novak Djokovic to win his first World Tour Finals. Being World No. 4 at the age of 21 is surely not a fluke, rather it's pure determination and hard work which has brought him to this point this soon. Winning 10 ATP titles and reaching a career-high ranking of World No. 3, he has surely been after the big four ever since he entered the tour. Despite being the newbie, he has been singled out by many players and commentators, as one of the apparent heirs to the Big 4 and a future World No. 1. Although he has proven his mettle a lot of times, the department he still lacks in is performing in Grand Slams. Being the World No. 4, his highest achievement in Grand Slams is being the Quarter-final finish at the Roland Garros in 2018. Even this time in Australian Open, he lost to Milos Raonic in the 4th round itself. Keeping all that aside, Zverev has been a hard-hitting baseline player and is equally good at the net as well. Though his cross for Dybala's decisive goal was not an assist (that accolade probably goes to Smalling who got some part of his boot on the ball in a bid to deflect it), it was sumptuous all the same - whipped with the pace at neck height, posing uncertainty and delivered to cause maximum damage. He came close to scoring himself through a free-kick late in the first half, forcing David de Gea into an uncertain punched save. If Ronaldo's mature performance wasn't enough, the turn of events after the final whistle further highlighted what Man Utd fans mean to the 33-year-old. Having secured a comfortable 1-0 win, Juventus stars were walking into the dressing room. But, not Ronaldo. The Portuguese was the last man to head into the tunnel, not before the Old Trafford crowd witnessed his humility. Right after the game, two more pitch invaders stormed to the playing field. Unlike the first invader, these two were more interested in selfies. Once again, the stewards interceded and again Ronaldo intervened. Google Maps on Android made it convenient and accessible to every user regardless of what device they were using. You no longer needed a fancy device for your car in order to use GPS to get around. Every year the same joke comes back, with a few modifications of course, when Apple releases any new product and this time obviously wasn't any different. In case you have been living under a rock, Apple has released three new iPhones – iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, and iPhone Xr. From so much confusion about the pronunciation of the names to making our favourite kidney jokes, people on Twitter did not disappoint. Since almost all of us can't afford to upgrade every time there's a new model, we can just upgrade our jokes and make everyone laugh and all of us can unite in being poor by Apple's standards. Coming back to the pronunciation, honestly is it “excess” or “tennis”? I don't think any of the options is the better one, tbh. So much confusion. Customer: I would like to buy an iPhone tens max. James Gunn, the celebrated director of the super hit 'Guardian Of The Galaxy' franchise, is facing severe backlash and heat at the moment for something that happened almost a decade ago. Today, we have a lot of choice in terms of sports to watch on TV. But, go back a decade or two and the choices were pretty limited. Of course, there was cricket and hockey. But, if you were interested in any other sport, the chances of finding Live programming on TV were slim. The audiences for such sports were of two types, hardcore fans of the sport and hardcore fans of the personalities who played the sport. They may say it's because their favourite teams are playing but, the truth is, the only reason anyone wakes up at 5 am, is to watch their favourite player. Names that we can't forget. Even if you've never watched these players play a single minute of basketball you'll recognize their faces and certainly recognize their names instantly. Dennis Rodman When we talk of NBA stars who were in the news for all the wrong reasons, we can't help but mention Dennis Rodman. While some might consider Rodman to be nothing but a poor reflection of what a professional athlete must be, we can't deny the fact that he's won 5 NBA championships.
