Olive Oil, Coconut Oil Or Desi Ghee, Which Is The Healthiest & Why?
ADMIN posted a blog entry in FDF Online News
On some days, olive oil is healthier and on others, coconut oil wins the title. Oh, and how can we forget about ghee. Ever since the keto diet became popular, desi ghee has become a fine competitor too. Nevertheless, with so many cooking oil fads around us, it’s hard to keep up. All of them claim to be “healthy” for your bodies. But what does that even mean? Do they have a lesser number of calories? Are they more nutrient dense? Do they help with specific health conditions? The true definition of what’s healthy, changes from one person to another. However, today, we’ll compare them, keeping all the different aspects of our health in mind. Without further ado, let’s get started! 1. How Many Calories Do They Have? Fat percentage of your body is an important health factor for all of us. However, it’s even more important if you have a specific goal in mind. Be it gaining weight or losing, keeping a count of your calories can help you achieve that goal faster. via GIPHY With that being said, cooking oils can be a major game changer for your calorie deficit. All the three oils have a similar number of calories. One tablespoon of coconut oil has 117 calories, one tablespoon of olive oil has about 119 calories and one tablespoon of ghee has about 120 calories. __ECOMPRODUCT__556__ Hence, it’s safe to say that even though the difference isn’t major, coconut oil is the one with the least amount of calories. 2. Which One Is More Nutritional? Apart from the macronutrients, you must also consider the amount of micronutrients they may have. Olive oil is not only rich in saturated and monounsaturated fats, but also in Vitamin E and K. Coconut oil is rich in saturated fats and also has small amounts of Vitamin E, K and calcium. However, these are present in very little amounts when compared to olive oil. __ECOMPRODUCT__2195__ Lastly, ghee also has a similar amount of saturated and monounsaturated fats, but has 13% of your DV for Vitamin A, which is absent in olive and coconut oil. Little amounts of Vitamin K and E are also found in ghee. __ECOMPRODUCT__2237__ Technically, ghee has more vitamins, followed by olive oil and then coconut oil. However, because of the high caloric value, we can’t really rely on these oils to fulfil our daily requirement. The difference is negligible. Getting your vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables or supplements, is a much healthier option. __ECOMPRODUCT__945__ 3. Which One Is Better For Your Heart? Choosing the right cooking oil is essential mainly for your heart health. Oils are rich sources of fats, which directly impact your cholesterol levels as well as overall heart health. __ECOMPRODUCT__1504__ A recent study did indicate that olive reduces the risk of heart diseases by 5%, but it did not reduce the risk of heart attacks particularly. The reduced risk of heart diseases is linked with the high amounts of monounsaturated fats present. __ECOMPRODUCT__1394__ Coconut oil has about 90% of saturated fats which are proven to help in reducing bad cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol levels. However, many experts still advise us to not use too much coconut oil because of this very reason. While balanced levels of saturated fats can help reduce LDL (bad cholesterol), high levels of it can evidently lead to poor heart health. A 2013 study suggested that ghee isn’t that bad for your heart after all, thanks to the monounsaturated and saturated fats. However, it is recommended by experts that no more than 10% of your calories should be from saturated fats. Overall, ghee still has less amount of saturated fat than coconut oil. __ECOMPRODUCT__2238__ Strictly in terms of heart health, olive oil clearly wins, followed by ghee and then coconut oil. Risk Factors The risk factor for all these oils is that they are high in saturated and monounsaturated fats. However, as long as you balance the amounts with the rest of your diet, you have nothing to worry about. Overall, olive oil is the one with the fewest risk factors, because of low levels of saturated fats. Final Verdict: Which Is The Healthiest Oil? Clearly, olive oil wins this battle. All the three oils have their own health benefits. However, olive oil has the least risk and is the safest choice for a regular diet. You can use olive oil for preparing salad dressing, cooking vegetables and even for baking. The only exception is deep frying because it has a low smoke point. Other than that, olive oil is versatile, healthy and even has a delicious flavour to it. Explore More View the full article -
