  1. Robert Downey Jr gives the best speeches, no one can honestly disagree on that. He just has that charm about him. Remember that emotional speech from 'Avengers: Infinity War's' premiere last year? And, he is fiercely loyal and loves all his friends to bits. So, it wasn't surprising to see him act like a proud dad after Rami Malek's Oscar win for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. Celebrating the win, RDJ posted a video on his Instagram praising Rami and his incredible achievement. Image1 In his speech, he said, “I say, unequivocally, Rami Malek is the front of the bloodline of his acting generation, I think he has witnessed it here tonight and from an endomorphic loner of 'Mr Robot' to the complete showman that he displayed here. I am just telling you dude and you already know it, you are good.” Oh, Mr Stark, I feel so good about this. View this post on Instagram @ramimalek Who loves you babe ? 2. Chris Evans is the most superior Chris in Hollywood, no one can fight me on that. Sorry, Hemsworth, not so sorry, Pratt. Basically, we all know he's the best Chris but he's still always so adamant on proving that. Or maybe, the more plausible reason is that he's just that great of a person and he's just doing what's right. I mean, after all, he didn't become for Captain America for no reason. During the Oscar ceremony last night, actually this morning for us, Chris showed everyone once again what a gentleman he is and him just being him, obviously won everyone over. What happened was that, Chris was seated right next to Regina King and her mother. Regina was nominated - and then won - the Academy Award for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role for 'If Beale Street Could Talk'. As she was getting up, it was followed by a standing ovation which was led by Chris of course, and it looked like she stumbled a little bit because of her dress. Then, Chris being Chris was already there to help her. Aww, look at that. What a guy! It's also not the first time he has been this sweet and literally won everyone's hearts. People have been just talking about this moment and what a gentleman he really is and he knows it. That means a lot coming from my on-screen mom :) https://t.co/XnyHTj8nY0 — Chris Evans (@ChrisEvans) February 25, 2019 Tell me also, please. 3. Today Guneet Monga's 'Period. End of Sentence' created history by winning the Best Documentary Short Subject at the Oscars 2019 aka the 91st Academy Awards. The 26-minute documentary is set in Hapur, a village in Uttar Pradesh and deals with the taboo around menstruation and how the women come together to create sanitary pads of their own, when a machine is installed in the village. © sikhya entertainment The whole world is talking about this documentary and so is Mumbai Police, but for a totally different yet equally important cause. Mumbai Police's social media team is known and lauded for coming up with creative and witty messages, on things that are going viral on the internet. This time too they did not disappoint us at all. Mumbai Police referred to the Oscar-winning documentary and wrote, "If cities were given an Oscar, Mumbai would have bagged some of the trophies definitely!" 4. Heard the story of a little boy whose parents left the sand and pyramids of Egypt for the big city? No, I'm not talking about Mo Salah! The first time I noticed Rami Malek (the actor) was in 'Mr. Robot'. An incredible show indeed. I watched it for Christian Slater because, admit it, no one knew who Rami Malek was or what a phenomenon he was going to become. But, he grew on me. It's not far-fetched to say, like fine wine, Rami Malek gets better with age. © AP Before you say it, no, this is not a Rami Malek appreciation piece. Don't get me wrong, he deserves all the praise in the world and I'll probably call him incredible on multiple occasions. But, here, I'm going to introduce you to the other side of Rami Malek. Not the actor. The person. There's only one song that was going on in my head while writing this and it's fair that you listen to it while reading too. It helps, trust me. What a weird name. Right? Take it from a guy who has had his name mispronounced more than he can count, it's not the best feeling in the world. Sometimes you correct people and at others, you just let it go. But, life gets better. As you grow older you realise there are more important things in life. Also, if you can't pronounce an Oscar winner's name properly, you're a nobody. Okay, not a nobody but obscure for sure. For Rami, he used this to his advantage. A little boy, born to Egyptian parents, growing up in Los Angeles couldn't have been easy. Remember, this was the 80s when inclusivity and emotions weren't as important as they are today. Assimilation was a struggle. But, as Rami tells us, “it's something that you fight against until you accept what a beautiful and powerful thing it is to have this history and this tradition running through your genes, you know?” If you watched his acceptance speech at the Oscar's, you would realise what an important role his family has played in his life and how much he credits them for his success. He didn't give the rehearsed "I'd like to thank the Academy, what an honour this is, blah blah", but straight up, “mom…I love you, lady.” Incredible. Watching that speech again has left me at a loss for words. You don't see him crying, but you're probably blind if you don't see the years of struggle in his eyes. Remember 'Night At The Museum? Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson at their comedic best. What about Rami? Did you know he was in the movie too? Yeah, he was the Egyptian Pharaoh. But, even with amazing comedic actors like Ben, Owen, Robin Williams and Hank Azaria, Rami made me want to see more of Ahkmenrah. I could say I knew then that Rami was going to make it big, but I'd be lying. He gave me a few laughs and then I carried on with life. Didn't even bother Googling him. Who cares, right? Even in the pilot of 'Mr. Robot', I was like "heyyyy it's the Pharaoh!!! Where's Christian?" I really believed he was Mr. Robot. After all, it's Christian Slater, amirite? That's when Rami entered my subconscious. Not as a Pharaoh, but as an actor. So, when I heard there was a movie being made on my favourite band of all-time, it came as a pleasant surprise that an actor I've heard of is playing the lead. Playing someone who everyone loved so dearly is no easy task. All it takes is for the movie to tank and you'll forever be typecast as the guy who ruined the legacy of Freddie Mercury. Luckily, little Bubba Rami was meant for much greater things. Killer Queen could have had a very different meaning here. Thankfully, it's just an amazing song with no negative connotations attached. Barring Bryan Singer, of course. This is not Rami's first taste of success, though. He's already won an Emmy for 'Mr. Robot'. So, it goes without saying that he's used to being the best among his peers. Not that he would ever admit it (as you could see from his speech). Do I see Rami completing the prestigious EGOT (Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar, Tony)? He's already won three of them and he's only 37. He can act. All he needs to do, is venture into theatre and he surely could join the likes of Mel Brooks, Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, and Andrew Lloyd-Webber among others, as an acting legend. He's going to return for the final season of 'Mr. Robot' soon, so if you haven't watched it yet, start right away. But first, please watch 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. It's worth your time and effort. Even if you're at a work, tell your boss that you're taking some time to appreciate the adversity Rami faced and celebrate his Oscar win by watching/re-watching 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. I'm sure they'll understand. What are your views on the movie? The Oscars? Who were your favourites to win? Let us know in the comments section.
  5. The Oscars this year was an interesting blend of glamour and glitz with some surprise wins, some well-deserved wins, and some power-packed performances which took our breath away (you're living under a rock if you still haven't watched Lady Gaga perform with Bradley Cooper today on TV). However, since these good looking people always dress to kill, we decided to do our own little round up of the best-dressed and the most gorgeous women, who shined bright like diamonds on the red carpet today. 1. 6. The 2019 Oscars were an interesting blend of performances and winners and thankfully, a lot of predicted winners got their due and the much awaited golden lady as well, including none other than Lady Gaga who surprised and wowed the audiences last year when she teamed up with Bradley Cooper for 'A Star Is Born' and gave us the musical we deserved. Her performance and the original track 'Shallow' were already being touted to be award winners and well, they didn't disappoint. Lady Gaga has come a very long way from her 'Poker Face' and 'Bad Romance' days and this is the result of true hard work. 7. The announcement of the 91st Academy Awards on Tuesday evening happened to be big news for the country. 'Period. End of Sentence', a film set in India is now in contention for an Oscar for Best Documentary (Short Subject). The 25-minute long film is based on the subject of menstrual hygiene in India and has been directed by Iranian-American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi. via GIPHY We exclusively got into a conversation with the film's co-producer Guneet Monga (Monga's Sikhya Entertainment has backed films like The Lunchbox and Masaan). Guneet discussed various aspects of being a producer and the filming process. © Guneet Monga How does it feel like to be amongst the top five nominees of the Documentary Short Subject? It's a massive honour. It's a huge honour to be acknowledged by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. I don't know how to express it in words. It feels very humbling and I am very grateful that our friend has reached this level and I hope the whole world can watch it. I am very excited, happy and gratified more than anything. Just when a mainstream Bollywood film titled 'Padman' was made, what inspired you and your team to chose the film's theme based on menstrual hygiene? The more we speak about it, it is less. This topic should have a hundred more movies on it. Periods are a taboo. I think 'Padman' did a big thing about making the conversation normal. More power to more people doing this and I think a lot more needs to be done. When you will see the film you will get to know that people still don't freely talk about it and there is shame attached to it. This is a normal process for any woman. © Columbia Pictures This was a story that was moving and was chosen by the girls in LA who wanted to bring it forth. A few schoolgirls in LA aged 12 to 14, read an article that in India, girls don't get to go to school because of periods and also drop out of schools. They started with Yogathon and other campaigns to raise money for buying a pad machine. They then raised $40,000 to be able to make a movie. They hired Rayka to direct the movie. The whole team got ready to shoot this in India. And it was through one of their parents, who got in touch with me. That's how I became a producer on the film. I feel that there should be a hundred more movies on this subject. We are in no comparison with 'Padman', as the film did a great job in lifting the taboo. We are a small film, a 25 minute documentary with girls and their point of view. What's your take on creating and putting out stories with women in the centre? There should be more films/ documentaries to put girls up in the centre of the storytelling. We need to get acknowledged across the world through every storytelling medium. Given that we are half the world and we also run the world. You have also remained a BAFTA nominee and became one of the first Indian producers to join the producer branch of the Academy. Would you foster and root for more roles/ work opportunities for the Indians? Indians/Asians would love to have their stories told to the rest of the world. We tell our stories to the rest of the world. That's the world we come from and these are the stories we are capable of telling in hope to resonate with other people. What is the most challenging part when it comes to connecting Indian films with international buyers? The challenge comes with the way the deals are structured within India. This kind of limits the international buyers to be a part of it. Any upcoming projects you are working on? I am doing a lot of cool stuff, especially women stories. I am also starting my own YouTube channel by women for women, it is called ReDo. 'Period. End of Sentence' is a short film, which follows girls and women in Hapur in Uttar Pradesh and their experience with the installation of a pad machine in the village. via GIPHY The documentary highlights the fight by the rural women against the deeply rooted stigma of menstruation.
  8. A decade ago, on the morning of January 22, 2008, Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight' became the only superhero film to be nominated in a record-breaking 8 categories, a stature that has not been achieved by any superhero genre film till date. via GIPHY The heartbreaking reality associated with this film that still pinches the movie buffs happens to be its exclusion from being nominated in the Best Picture category. Years later, just a day after the announcement of nominations of the 91st Academy Awards, the world is contemplating a rather historic moment that might change the whole significance of the Oscars forever. Ryan Coogler's tour-de-force 'Black Panther', which is a superhero saga, has been nominated for the Oscars in multiple categories including the esteemed Best Picture category. via GIPHY “Wakanda forever”, tweeted 'Black Panther's' lead actress Lupita Nyong'o, as she shared her extreme delight on the micro-blogging platform, regarding the film's nominations. Since then, social media has been buzzing with tweets, comments, and memes. Seven #OscarNoms for #BlackPanther, including best picture!! This is our reaction the first time we saw footage from the film and we're feeling this way all over again today! Thank you @TheAcademy! #WakandaForever #Oscars pic.twitter.com/lXWv3nsN90 — Lupita Nyong'o (@Lupita_Nyongo) January 22, 2019 Where on one hand, the film has been declared a shape-shifting cultural phenomenon prominently at various award ceremonies this year, others are fuming over the Academy's decision of putting the film in the Best Picture category. Who can forget the ultimate dismissal of 'The Dark Knight'? On the 10th death anniversary of Heath Ledger (Joker), fans remember! via GIPHY If we take a look back at Christopher Nolan's 'Batman' sequel, the film got nominated in eight categories and ended up winning two including the posthumous win by Heath Ledger who portrayed Joker in the film. The only possible reason behind the Best Picture nomination snub for 'The Dark Knight' is believed to be the Academy's limit on the number of candidates in this category. 'Black Panther's' nomination is being termed historic, however, one can't help but wonder if it's because of the controversial history of 'The Dark Knight' at the Oscars that the Marvel film got to this juncture? Does 'Black Panther' owe its nomination to the biggest snub of all time – the dismissal of Christopher Nolan's beloved project? via GIPHY 2019 brings more room for nominees in the Best Picture category and the number has been increased from 5 to between 5 and 10 films. That makes us think more and deeply about the loss 'The Dark Knight' faced at the hands of the Academy. Other films that have got nominated this year are 'A Star Is Born', 'Vice', 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'The Favourite', 'BlacKkKlansman', 'Green Book' and 'Roma'. But what are the chances of 'Black Panther's' win? The Academy has been famously known for dropping the last minute bombs! Remember the highly criticized 'La La Land' fiasco? As critics said, 'Moonlight's'well-deserved win was taken from their hands and the wrong film was announced on purpose, we don't know what the truth is, but two years later, we know that Hollywood is trying to prove a point here. via GIPHY In simple words, 'Black Panther's' nomination may just be a kind gesture by the Academy to avoid the 'Oscars So White' tirade! When the film surpassed James Cameron's 'Titanic' and became the third highest grossing movie ever in the United States, there came the indication that the Academy might consider it. However, this nomination is indeed a sheer surprise for us. via GIPHY Though stigma has taken a back seat and the film deserves an equal opportunity to win, but somehow, it is meant to be snubbed! Otherwise, it would be a naive but well-planned catastrophe directed towards Mr Nolan.
  9. Irrespective of the sport, every sportsperson has their own signature style, move and technique that is more than capable of either making, or breaking their respective careers. In the world of football, we've seen the dribbling skills of Lionel Messi and the aerial threat of Cristiano Ronaldo. But, apart from their respective playing styles, the footballing icons also have different ways of taking penalty kicks. From their run-up to preferred corners of the goal post, each footballer takes penalty in their own unique manner - something that is often replicated by the fans in their respective football matches. While there are a lot of videos where fans have been seen taking the spot kick just like their footballing heroes, a latest video that shows a young girl recreating the penalties of Ronaldo, Messi, Paul Pogba and Neymar is undoubtedly the one that stands out. In what has turned into a viral video, a young girl can be seen sporting the club jerseys of the four prominent footballers before successfully copying their penalty kicks. She carefully begins taking the signature Ronaldo run-up and thumping the ball into the net before unveiling the Portuguese iconic goal celebration. How Messi, Ronaldo, Pogba, Neymar hit penalty kicks.. pic.twitter.com/ZUIP0PSoGi — Harsh Goenka (@hvgoenka) November 25, 2018 The next one in line was Messi who would have surely been proud to see the girl curling the ball from her left foot into the inside corner of the post. Pogba's snail speed in the build up to his spot kick was also perfectly replicated by the girl before breaking into a dance move to celebrate the goal. Last, but not the least, Neymar's theatrics from FIFA World Cup in Russia once again came to the fore - thanks to this hilarious video. After successfully converting the penalty in Neymar's style, the girl was seen going down to the floor, imitating the Brazilian's antics from the World Cup earlier this year. The icing on the cake was definitely the last few seconds of the video, where the girl was literally seen rolling on the ground, bringing the old Neymar rolling memes back to our memories. While we reckon that the girl in this video deserves an Oscar for imitating the four footballers in such hilarious manner, she has already set the social media on fire with her footballing and acting skills. 10. About 27 years ago, an absolutely striking face appeared on the television and we absolutely fell in love with him. Yes, I am talking about Will Smith and his 'Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air' days. He was funny and eccentric all at once, and we loved his playful sense of humour. © Warner Bros. Domestic Will Smith has since been an integral part of Hollywood and the music industry and we've loved all his movies and his raps over time (remember Get Jiggy With It...nana na na nana?) yeah, sorry I got carried away for a second there. But yeah, the actor is so versatile, we've been wondering why we haven't done a 'Will' watch these movies' article on him. Since he's celebrating his 50th today, we thought we could do a list of his must watch films and celebrate the birthday of a man who has given us so much to remember, over time. © Twitter Just a day before his birthday he was chilling with comedian David Chappelle, when a journalist asked him if he would ever consider running for the President of the United States and his reply was a classic Will Smith rhetoric, ''You would vote for me if I ran? I'ma consider it. I'ma take that under advisement." Chappelle, as a rejoinder to that, replied "And I'll be the Vice-President, that way nothing bad will happen to Will". Wow, that's some great camaraderie! Haha... Who should be in our cabinet? . ð¹: @westbrook @lukaskaiser A post shared by Will Smith (@willsmith) on Sep 22, 2018 at 5:23pm PDT We really don't know if Will was kidding or serious, but if he does run for president sometime in the future, it's only fair to watch his movies right about now, because once he's the President, he's not going to have the time to make more movies! So, we've put together Will's 10 best movies that you can cue and watch and have a blast while doing so, because none of his movies follow the same genre or even the same league for that matter and they're all damn entertaining! (1) Men In Black-1, 2 & 3 (1997, 2002 & 2012) © Columbia Pictures You can make a weekend out of the Men In Black Trilogy for sure. Based on a Marvel comic book by Lowell Cunningham, the film is a laugh riot with some serious weapons to destroy all sorts of Aliens, invading planet Earth. Will Smith plays a MIB agent along with Tommy Lee Jones, and their sole aim is to destroy any sort of Alien life that's causing havoc on the planet. The 90s era of Will Smith classics sort of started with 'Men In Black' and it was a super hit when it came out back in '97. The SCI-FI action comedy is Will's most popular work till date and he didn't let us down throughout the entire franchise. He even rapped the title track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiBLgEx6svA) 'Men In Black'. Yeah, trust him to do that! Watch the trailer here (2) The Pursuit Of Happiness (2006) © Columbia Pictures What's better than Will Smith in a movie? Will Smith with his son in a movie! 'The Pursuit Of Happiness' also stars his son Jaden Smith as his on-screen son, trying to make ends meet with his dad. The movie is about the life of Chris Gardner, a multi-millionaire stock broker who spent an earlier part of his life, homeless and in poverty, struggling to raise his son at the same time. The movie is inspirational on another level and also gives us a glimpse into Will and Jaden's personal father-son dynamic. The role did land Will an Oscar nomination for best actor. Watch the trailer here (3) Ali (2001) © Columbia Pictures Another versatile role played by Smith, where he dons the character of the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. He covers the ten-year span of Ali's life, showcasing some of his best fights, in and out of the ring, capturing the struggles and the victories of one of the world's favourite athlete. The movie talks about everything, from his legal battles during the war and his celebrations as a boxer and Smith plays the role flawlessly! Watch the trailer here (4) Bad Boys 1 & 2 (1995 & 2003) © Columbia Pictures Please don't do a Willie marathon without Bad Boys 1 & 2. Actually, part 1 will suffice because that's one hell of an action movie you shouldn't miss. The Will Smith-Martin Lawrence duo is perfect for making the most entertaining detective-cop movie ever. The first part revolves around a $100 million worth of confiscated cocaine heist and it's quite thrilling and entertaining. This was also a major break for Smith after his TV days came to an end. Watch the trailer here (5) Independence Day © 20th Century Fox 'Independence Day' skyrocketed Smith's career like a growth graph on steroids. The film was legendary and we still catch it from time to time on TV, don't we? It had just about everything. An eccentric Jeff Goldblum, President Bill Pullman and a crazy alien troupe, ready to blow up the earth. Of course, 'Independence Day' had more to do with an alien invasion than America's invasion but America saved the day nonetheless. Watch it again for a boatload of entertainment and Will Smith's charming & witty character. Watch the trailer here (6) Enemy Of The State (1998) © Buena Vista Pictures Of course, Will had to act in a conspiracy crime-thriller, didn't he? And he did a brilliant job of it too. He plays a successful lawyer who gets stuck in a very convoluted government surveillance situation after obtaining the footage of a Congressman's murder. The movie was a box-office hit (like all his movies usually are) and also established the fact that Will can play just about any role! Watch the trailer here (7) Hitch (2005) © Columbia Pictures Definitely, on the list of some of the best rom-coms made in Hollywood, Smith plays the role of a sophisticated and charming 'love doctor' who sort of gets two people together. He's out on a mission to help his dopey friend Kevin James to hook up with the love of his life, when he falls in love himself with the hottie Eva Mendes. A fun watch for sure, if you like Will in these romantic, charming-love doctor kinda roles. Just watch this one with your GF. Watch the trailer here (8) I, Robot (2004) © 20th Century Fox Before Will was out on a tragic date with Sophie the Robot, he did a movie called 'I, Robot', where he was kicking some serious robot ass. 'I, Robot' is about a robot loathing detective played by Smith, who is investigating the death of the man who created the robots, in 2035. He traces one corrupt robot out of an entire bunch and actually stumbles upon some disturbing truth. I guess this is one movie where his looks supersede his role for sure. Watch the trailer here (9) I Am Legend (2007) © Columbia Pictures If you've seen this movie and haven't cried when Samantha the dog dies (spoiler alert *oops*), then you're the real robot man. No really, this post-apocalyptic drama is one of Will's best works. He plays a U.S. army virologist, who is a sole survivor of the aftermath of a mutant-virus breakout. Yeah, all the humans become zombie-like creatures who hunt at night and lay low during the day. He does find the 'cure' but at a really heavy cost (yeah, not giving away any more spoilers, if you haven't seen this one). Definitely watch this one though, you'll love it. Watch the trailer here (10) Hancock © Columbia Pictures Yes, of course, Will HAD TO play a vigilante-superhero too, didn't he? But he's not your run-of-the-mill, beating them bad guys, kinda superhero. Hancock is a failed superhero from LA, whose routinely reckless superhero actions cost the city millions of bucks often enough, and no one really wants him to be a vigilante anymore. Eventually, the one guy he saves, comes forward and changes his image for the better and makes him your regular neighbourhood superhero instead. This action-packed comedy is a great watch too. Watch the trailer here So, on his 50th birthday today, let's just cue some WS movies (because trust me, all of them are entertaining AF) and have a running marathon of the only guy in Hollywood who has played a cop, a superhero, a virologist, an alien detective, an alien killer, a detective solving robotic crimes, a lawyer, a boxer and of course a love doctor! Phew!
