  9. A 3D-printed Facebook logo is displayed in front of a US flag, March 18, 2018. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration WASHINGTON: The US Federal Trade Commission, a consumer and competition watchdog, is investigating Facebook after a major data scandal that affected 50 million users, US media reported on Tuesday. A probe by the FTC would add further pressure on the social media giant which faces calls by Britain's Parliament and the European Commission for urgent investigations, while US lawmakers have called on Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to appear before Congress. At the centre of the scandal is a British firm, Cambridge Analytica, which worked for Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. According to a joint investigation by The New York Times and Britain's Observer, Cambridge Analytica was able to create psychological profiles using data from 50 million Facebook users through the use of a personality prediction app that was downloaded by 270,000 people but also scooped up data from friends. The goal was to be able to predict the behavior of individual US voters. The Wall Street Journal reported that the FTC is probing whether, by the data transfer to Cambridge Analytica, Facebook violated terms of a decree under which it agreed to get user consent for collecting personal data and sharing it with others. In a similar report, The Washington Post said that if the FTC ultimately finds that Facebook broke that agreement, it could fine the company $40,000 for each violation. Facebook shares tumbled another 2.6 percent on Tuesday after a 6.8 percent plunge Monday on news of the scandal. The social media company on Tuesday said it is "committed to vigorously enforcing our policies to protect people's information and will take whatever steps are required to see that this happens".
  10. Harvey Weinstein arrives at the Sun Valley Inn in Sun Valley, Idaho, US, July 9, 2009. REUTERS/Rick Wilking/Files LONDON: British police are now investigating sexual assault allegations brought by nine women against US film mogul Harvey Weinstein, according to media reports Saturday. Scotland Yard confirmed that its "Operation Kaguyak" was investigating 14 separate claims brought by nine women, but it doesn?t identify suspects unless they have been charged. British media ? including the Press Association ? reported that the claims relate to the disgraced producer. The latest claims were reported to police on November 13 by a woman who said she was assaulted in London in 2011, and on a separate occasion outside the UK in 2010. The second allegation will be passed to the relevant police force. Accusations of sexual assault have continued to pour in since investigations in The New York Times and The New Yorker last year exposed a series of accounts of sexual predation by the film tycoon. More than 50 women ? including stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, and Mira Sorvino ? have accused 65-year-old Weinstein of sexual abuse and harassment, though he has denied forcing himself on anyone.

On the progress of the case, Shehbaz said that there have been some developments. The scientific pieces of evidence have helped the case move forward, he added. He shared that some evidence has revealed that there might be a possibility of an accomplice as well. ?We have not left any stones unturned. Comprehensive efforts are being taken by police, intelligence and law enforcing agencies in this regard.? He further said that suspects will be arrested but I can?t give a timeframe. ?The criminal will be arrested and taken to task as per law.? He shared that he is personally monitoring the situation and asked the people to refrain from speculating on the matter. ?Our efforts will bear fruits.? When asked about the Pakistan Awami Tehreek protest on Lahore?s Mall Road, he said: ?everyone will be held accountable.?

  13. A US Army Black Hawk helicopter. Image Courtesy: SlashGear WASHINGTON: The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the September 21 collision of a civilian drone and a US Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter near Staten Island, New York, as concerns mount over the rising number of unmanned aircraft in US airspace. The safety board said on Thursday the helicopter had landed safely but that its main rotor blade, window frame and transmission deck were damaged. Lieutenant Colonel Joe Buccino ? a spokesman for the 82nd Airborne Division ? said the Army had concluded that the helicopter was not being targeted and was struck by a drone being operated by a hobbyist. The helicopter was flying at about 500 feet (152 metres) when the drone struck the side of the aircraft, he said. The helicopter was repaired within 24 hours with only minor damage and was in New York to assist in security efforts for the United Nations General Assembly. The NTSB said it had recovered a motor and arm from the DJI Phantom 4 drone from the helicopter, identified and interviewed the drone operator and reviewed data logs for the flight. China-based DJI said it was assisting the agency. ?DJI is firmly committed to the safety of our products,? the company said. ?We have always instructed drone operators to obey the laws and regulations applicable to drones in their jurisdiction.? Government and private-sector officials are concerned that dangerous or even hostile drones could get too close to places like military bases, airports and sports stadiums. Earlier this year, the US Federal Aviation Administration banned drone flights over 133 US military facilities. In August, the Pentagon said US military bases could shoot down drones that endanger aviation safety or pose other threats. Also on Thursday, the FAA began banning drone flights over 10 US landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty in New York and Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota, at the request of national security and law enforcement agencies. The FAA and US Interior Department barred drone flights up to 400 feet (122 metres) within the boundaries of sites including the USS Constitution in Boston, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, and Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia. The list also includes Folsom Dam and Shasta Dam in California, Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona, Hoover Dam in Nevada and Grand Coulee Dam in Washington state. The restrictions were announced last week. The Trump administration said in June that it wanted to promote drones. The Obama administration implemented rules opening the skies to small drones for education, research and routine commercial use. The Trump administration is considering allowing expanded drone use for purposes such as deliveries, where aircraft would fly beyond the sight of an operator.
  14. White House senior advisor Jared Kushner attends a news conference in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington, US. WASHINGTON: A US House of Representatives committee asked the White House on Monday for information about a media report that senior officials used private email accounts for government business. The request by the Republican and Democratic leaders of the House Oversight Committee follows a Politico report on Sunday that President Donald Trump?s son-in-law and close adviser, Jared Kushner, and other current and former White House officials used private emails for their government duties. In a letter to the White House counsel, the committee?s chairman, Republican Trey Gowdy, and top Democrat Elijah Cummings said they would examine whether senior Trump administration officials were ?deliberately trying to circumvent (federal) laws by using personal, private, or alias email addresses to conduct official government business.? Politico said the Kushner emails included correspondence about media coverage, event planning and other subjects. Kushner?s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said his client complied with government record-keeping rules by forwarding all the emails to his official account. During Trump?s 2016 election campaign, the Republican attacked Democratic rival Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server for official correspondence when she was secretary of state under President Barack Obama. Some of Clinton?s messages were later determined to contain classified information. Politico said other senior Trump aides had also used private email accounts, including former Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, former chief strategist Steve Bannon and economic adviser Gary Cohn. The New York Times reported on Monday that private accounts were also used by Trump?s daughter Ivanka after she became a White House adviser and by Stephen Miller, a senior Trump adviser. ?All White House personnel have been instructed to use official email to conduct all government related work. They are further instructed that if they receive work-related communication on personal accounts, they should be forwarded to official email accounts,? White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement.
  15. The Uber app logo is seen on a mobile phone, October 28, 2016. REUTERS/Toby Melville/Illustration/Files The Federal Bureau of Investigation is probing to see if Uber Technologies Inc had used software to illegally interfere with its competitors, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. The investigation is focusing on an Uber program ? internally known as ?Hell? ? that could track drivers working for rival service Lyft Inc, the WSJ said, citing people familiar with the investigation. Under the program, which was discontinued last year, Uber created fake Lyft customer accounts to seek rides, allowing it to track nearby Lyft drivers and ride prices, the Journal said. This also allowed Uber to obtain data on drivers who worked with both the car-ride providers and could have allowed it to lure drivers to leave Lyft with cash incentives, WSJ added. Uber was not immediately available for comment. The key question for investigators was whether the program comprised unauthorised access to a computer, the newspaper reported. The investigation is being led by the FBI?s New York office and the Manhattan US attorney?s office, the Journal said. Uber is already grappling with a range of legal troubles and the report of the FBI investigation comes days after the company named Expedia Inc?s Dara Khosrowshahi as its chief executive.
  16. The Islamabad High Court. Photo: File ISLAMABAD: Justice Aamer Farooq will hear a petition today (Wednesday) that challenged the constitution of a parliamentary committee to probe into MNA Ayesha Gulalai's harassment allegations against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan. Riaz Hanif filed a petition against the committee in Islamabad High Court, naming National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Gulalai, Imran and Islamabad Inspector General of Police as respondents. The petition alleges that the parliamentary committee formed to probe into the matter is based on ill intentions, and will result in the waste of money and time. "The National Assembly was formed for lawmaking and discussing matters of national interest," the petition states. "The PM deviated from the powers vested in him by the state by forming this committee." Hanif further stated that the order to provide security to Gulalai is wrong as she levelled allegations but did not disclose the language used in the messages. Gulalai's allegations Gulalai on August 3 claimed that Imran Khan had sent inappropriate messages to her and hinted at tying the knot in the texts. Upset on how Gulalai is attacked for raising voice: Bilawal He demands impartial probe into allegations levelled against PTI leaders She claimed to have informed her father that Khan had asked her to meet him alone and took her father and brother along with her to meet the PTI chief which irked him. Gulalai also said her father asked Khan about his intentions but he dodged the question. Ayesha Gulalai's allegations should be probed fairly: Sherry Rehman 'Women do not level such allegations if there is no substance to them,' Rehman said "I am ready to sit in front of Imran and can confront him on the obnoxious messages that he sent. He put me through mental torture and pain," said Gulalai. As per Gulalai, Khan first sent inappropriate messages to her in 2013. Will not resign from seat: Gulalai The former PTI member addressed a session of the National Assembly on Monday and said she will not resign from her seat in the assembly, amid ruckus created from PTI benches. Gulalai, addressing the assembly after taking permission from the deputy speaker, said that she was elected on merit and would continue her duties as a lawmaker. Will not resign from seat, says Gulalai amid ruckus during NA address Gave voice to weak women and never compromised over integrity, says Gulalai ?Imran is not a deity that he cannot be criticised; character is important,? said Gulalai over noise created by PTI lawmakers. She further said that allegations were hurled at her family and she received death and acid attack threats. PM directs 24-hour protection for Gulalai Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Friday directed the Islamabad inspector general of police to provide 24-hour protection to Gulalai. PM Abbasi said he made the decision after seeing news reports of threats against Gulalai. "Have never seen such happenings in my 30-year political career," said Abbasi. Speaking in the assembly, the prime minister said he respects both the accuser [Gulalai] as well as the person against whom the allegations are being levelled [Imran], adding that an in-camera parliamentary inquiry committee should probe the issue.

  18. Rohingya Muslim children stand in a village in Rakhine state, Myanmar October 27, 2016 - Reuters Myanmar will refuse entry to members of a United Nations probe focusing on allegations of killings, rape and torture by security forces against Rohingya Muslims, an official said on Friday. The government led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi had already said it would not cooperate with a mission set up after a Human Rights Council resolution was adopted in March. "If they are going to send someone with regards to the fact-finding mission, then there's no reason for us to let them come," said Kyaw Zeya, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the capital, Naypyitaw. "Our missions worldwide are advised accordingly," he said, explaining that visas to enter Myanmar would not be issued to the mission's appointees or staff. Suu Kyi, who came to power last year amid a transition from military rule, leads Myanmar through the specially created position of "State Counsellor", but is also minister of foreign affairs. Although she does not oversee the military, Suu Kyi has been criticized for failing to stand up for the more than 1 million stateless Rohingya Muslims in the western state of Rakhine. She said during a trip to Sweden this month the UN mission "would have created greater hostility between the different communities". The majority in Rakhine are ethnic Rakhine Buddhists who, like many in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, see the Rohingya as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Some 75,000 Rohingya fled northwestern Rakhine state to Bangladesh late last year after the Myanmar army carried out a security operation in response to attacks by Rohingya insurgents that killed nine border police. A UN report in February, based on interviews with some of the Rohingya refugees, said the response involved mass killings and gang rapes of Rohingya, and "very likely" amounted to crimes against humanity and possibly ethnic cleansing. Myanmar, along with neighbours China and India, dissociated itself from the March resolution brought by the European Union, which called for a mission to look into the allegations in Rakhine as well as reports of abuses in ethnic conflicts in the north of the country. Indira Jaising, an advocate from the Supreme Court of India, was appointed to lead the mission in May. The other two members are Harvard-trained Sri Lankan lawyer Radhika Coomaraswamy and Australian consultant Christopher Dominic. Myanmar insists that a domestic investigation - headed by former lieutenant general and Vice President Myint Swe - is sufficient to look into the allegations in Rakhine. "Why do they try to use unwarranted pressure when the domestic mechanisms have not been exhausted?" said Kyaw Zeya. "It will not contribute to our efforts to solve the issues in a holistic manner," he said. An advisory panel headed by former UN chief Kofi Annan is set to propose solutions for the broader issues in Rakhine but has not been asked to investigate human rights abuses.
