The first T20I against New Zealand will mark the new era in Indian cricket after the departure of former head coach Ravi Shastri and ex-captain Virat Kohli. While the former has parted ways with the Indian team after his glittering tenure came to an end, the latter has been given the much-needed break after relinquishing captaincy in the shortest format. The Kohli-Shastri partnership took Indian cricket to new heights in the last four years, especially in the game’s most challenging format -- Test cricket. Under their guidance, India became a force to reckon with across the globe, beating teams both home and away. © Reuters In the past, legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev has openly criticised the Indian players on a number of issues. He called out Kohli and Shastri when they tried to interfere with the selection matters. He also chided the players for choosing IPL money over playing for their country. So while evaluating their tenure, many would have expected him to be strict but he was anything but that. Contrary to the common perception, the former India skipper, like most fans, also believes that the Kohli-Shastri duo did an incredible job, which included winning back-to-back Test series on Australian soil. © Reuters The former skipper, under whose leadership India became the world champion for the first time in 1983, added that despite dominating around the world they could not lift any major ICC trophy and it would be their biggest regret, if any. “I think both have done a super job. I understand that they could not win India a major trophy but if we look at the last five years, since Kohli took over, there has been nothing lack. The big thing lacking is an ICC trophy. Apart from that, India have won in Australia, England… wherever they have travelled, they have beaten the other team,” Kapil Dev said in an interview with Uncut. © Reuters Talking about India’s recent performance in the just-concluded T20 World Cup, Kapil Dev said that had the Men In Blue reached the knockout stage, he wouldn’t have complained about it. But the fact that, despite being among the pre-tournament favourites, India couldn’t even qualify for the semis was hard to digest. “Reaching the World Cup knockouts is also a huge deal. I think after the 2007 World Cup in West Indies, this T20 World Cup is where it felt that India were disappointing. Had they reached the top 4 and then lost, it is understandable. But if you don't reach the top 4, there will be criticism. © Reuters “If you look at it from a trophy point of view, that's a different thing altogether. But if you look at their cricket, the brand they have played in the last five years, I would give them 90 percent marks out of 100, and deduct 10 percent marks for not winning an ICC Trophy,” he added. Like the legend said, one bad tournament doesn’t mean that the team is poor. Rather than going all out on criticism, the fans must not forget these were the same players who gave us countless moments to cherish in the last few years. © Reuters No doubt, India couldn’t match the expectations in this year’s T20 World Cup but one bad competition cant tarnish Kohli and Shastri’s legacy and we all must be proud of what they achieved during their combined tenure.
