  1. Ray Tracing has been only possible on Nvidia's latest GPUs that boasts the Turing architecture — until today. The company announced that Nvidia will support a wide range of GPUs with ray tracing technology on older GPUs, right up to the GTX 1060. Nvidia will offer racing on various GPUs as you can see from the list below: · GTX 1060 6GB · GTX 1070 · GTX 1070 Ti · GTX 1080 · GTX 1080 Ti · Titan X · Titan XP · GTX 1660 · GTX 1660 Ti · Titan V Even though Ray Tracing was only possible on the 20's series but this is now possible on older GPUs only if games are built using Microsoft's Direct X12 and DirectX Ray Tracing (or DXR). If a game is built using DXR, older GPUs will be able to support ray tracing. © Nvidia “When programmable shaders were introduced more than 15 years ago, they changed gaming forever. Today, real-time ray tracing is set to do the same thing — it represents the next landmark shift in game development,” said Matt Wuebbling, head of GeForce marketing at NVIDIA. “The breadth of industry adoption is remarkable —standard APIs, integration in major game engines, multiple AAA titles and support enabled in millions of hardware products. It all points to an exciting future for gamers.” © BCCL The performance on older GPUs remains to be seen as Ray Tracing works in different ways for different games. Tracing of light does not take too much GPU power, however, creating shadows and reflections can be GPU intensive. For example, ray tracing performance on a game like Battlefield V maybe better than Metro Exodus as it depends on different types of lighting being used in a game. Nvidia claims that the 1080Ti at 1,440p resolution supported ray tracing with 50fps. The new driver that will enable support for RTX on older GPUs will bring ray tracing to millions of users. This, in turn, will result in more games in the future implementing DXR and Microsoft's Direct X12. At the moment, there are a handful of games that support ray-tracing and this new update will make Nvidia's new features accessible to millions of gamers.
