  8. Venkatesh Iyer, the all-rounder everyone thought will become a part of the regular rotation for the Indian cricket team after Hardik Pandya was sidelined with a long-time lower back injury - has opened up about his comparisons to the veteran all-rounder. The previous year's finalists, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders will clash in a blockbuster opening game at the Wankhede Stadium in the Indian Premier League's 2022 edition. Last year, CSK beat KKR by 27 runs to claim their fourth IPL title, and a new Knight Riders side will be looking to start fresh against the 'Yellow Army' this year. View this post on Instagram KKR kept four players from last year's squad, including all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer, who was a steady performer for the team throughout the second half of the season. Iyer, who opened the KKR batting order opposite Shubman Gill, was instrumental in their journey to the final. As a result, following the T20 World Cup 2022, Iyer was called up for Team India and has since been a regular component of the T20I team. Prior to Iyer, Hardik Pandya was India's most popular and highly demanded pace-bowling all-rounder. However, injuries forced the 28-year-old to the sidelines and finally out of the international setup altogether. Pandya will lead the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League for the first time. View this post on Instagram Iyer will be trying to keep up his steady success for KKR, and in an interview, the all-rounder discussed his comparisons to Pandya as well as his own position as one of the Men in Blue. Iyer told the Times of India that he has a great deal of respect for Hardik 'bhai' for what he has done for India and that he admires him greatly. Because the two cricketers have similar bowling and batting techniques, Iyer finds comparisons to Pandya to be "quite natural," but the 27-year-old ignores them. View this post on Instagram He goes on to say that he is prepared for any position or circumstance. Iyer always thought that as a professional cricketer, he needed to be extremely adaptable. Cricketers who are newcomers to the Men in Blue must understand that there is fierce rivalry in every role and for every player. There aren't just a few players waiting to take your position; there are hundreds of them. View the full article
  9. One of the new Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises Lucknow Super Giants have suffered a huge blow even before the start of the tournament as their overseas pacer Mark Wood has been ruled out of the tournament due to an injury he suffered while representing his country in the Test series in the Caribbean. Wood picked up an elbow injury in the first Test and was ruled out of the 15th edition of the IPL. Lucknow Super Giants' team mentor Gautam Gambhir, however, has a name in his mind who can come in as replacement for Wood for the upcoming season. According to an @ESPNcricinfo report, Mark Wood has been ruled out of the 2022 IPL with an elbow injury. pic.twitter.com/4OuciWKDWx — Wisden (@WisdenCricket) March 18, 2022 According to a report published in a Bangladesh newspaper, Gambhir had contacted Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed and is considering him to be a part of the franchise for the upcoming season. However, Taskin is currently in South Africa where the visitors still have to play an ODI and two Test matches but Gambhir has reportedly said that they will consider him only if he can be available for the full duration of IPL 2022. Remember him? Didn't get a call for 2019 World Cup, Was booed in an ODI series when he was clicking at 130s. Then he decided to give his 100% to make a comeback, gave up eating Biryani, used to hit gym for hour and hour. Now look at him, he's so improved. Taskin Ahmed pic.twitter.com/euScgHIhyS — KH SAKIB (@Crickettalkss) March 18, 2022 While the final call depends on the Bangladesh Cricket Board to give their pacer NOC to participate in the IPL and miss the Test series against the Proteas, Lucknow fans seem to be unhappy with Gambhir's choice. “I want Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed in the team and that is for the whole season. If he agrees to the offer, Taskin will have to leave for India before the next two Tests against South Africa,” the former Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gambhir was quoted as saying by the website. The fans argued that with so many other players available, there is no need to rope in Taskin Ahmed who may not get the NOC from his board. They expressed their disappointment on social media. If he does agree to miss the Test matches and the BCB allows him to play in the IPL, he will be the second player from Bangladesh to feature in this year's IPL alongside fellow pacer Mustafizur Rahman who was roped in by Delhi Capitals at the mega auction. 11. Gujarat Titans had suffered a massive blow when England opener Jason Roy pulled out of the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) due to bubble fatigue. View this post on InstagramThe 31-year-old opener, who was bought by the Hardik Pandya-led franchisefor his base price of Rs 2 crore at the IPL 2022 mega auction, had put the new outfit in a spot of bother, leaving them in a race against time to find a suitable replacement. View this post on InstagramJason Roy was one of the biggest names in their squad and everybody had thought that the person replacing him would be of a similar profile, if not the stature. However, it turns out that the franchise has decided to go in a completely different direction and taken a massive punt on a young Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter named Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who had made headlines during the T20 World Cup in the UAE last year. 127 runs Eight fours, nine sixes Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the first batsman from Afghanistan to score an ODI hundred on debut pic.twitter.com/poAz6D6bfK — ICC (@ICC) January 21, 2021 Gurbaz made his T20I debut in September 2019 while it took him two years to make his maiden 50-over appearance at the international level. However, he grabbed the opportunity with both hands and became the first Afghan player to score a hundred on his ODI debut. In just nine ODIs, he has smashed three centuries. He also has three T20I fifties under his belt. According to a Cricbuzz report, the reason why the second most expensive franchise in IPL history picked the 20-year-old over any other foreign player was to cover up for their own mess which their management made while sitting on the auction table last month. View this post on InstagramActually, the franchise realised that other than Wriddhiman Saha and Matthew Wade they had no other wicket-keeping option on their roster. Due to his contractual obligations with Cricket Australia, Wade is set to miss the first two weeks of the tournament which leaves them only with Saha and the franchise had their own doubts about him as well, especially after the controversies he was involved in recently. Owing to all the above reasons, the outfit based out of the biggest cricket stadium in the world decided to take a massive punt on the young Afghan cricketer. A fantastic innings from 17-year-old Rahmanullah Gurbaz! He scored 79 from 52 balls to lead Afghanistan to 156/8.#AFGvWI | FOLLOW https://t.co/hpZTD9ux04 pic.twitter.com/DZozzWm2nW — ICC (@ICC) November 17, 2019 For many this decision came as a huge surprise as they couldn’t fathom why any franchise would replace an established name like Roy with a player who has yet to prove his calibre against a high-class bowling attack. Those who could make sense of their choice hailed it as a masterstroke, while those who couldn’t, argued that by picking an inexperienced player the management had further weakened their squad and dug up their own grave. Another Punjab Kings in Making — Harsha Tarak (@HarshaTarak8) March 8, 2022same as 2021 SRH 3 Afghans Saha Vijay shankar I think their performance too replicate 2021 SRH team — Manikanta Vamsi (@manikantavamsi9) March 8, 2022No. He is wild slogger — Arun (@_iArun__) March 8, 2022Guptil thik rahta ye quality balling ke against khel payega ya nahi — rocky jasoos (@JasoosRocky) March 8, 2022Who? — Ashish Shrikhande (@Shrikhande7) March 8, 2022No doubt, this young Afghan cricketer has had an outstanding start to his international career but majority of his knocks have come against lower-ranked teams like Zimbabwe, Ireland and other associate nations. I, by no means, am trying to doubt his talent and suggest that he can’t succeed against stronger bowling attacks. He sure can. He has got the potential and he could very well prove all the critics wrong but until that happens, Gujarat Titans fans’ apprehension is totally justified. View this post on Instagram The 15th edition of the biggest T20 league on the planet gets underway on March 26 and Gujarat Titans will launch their campaign against another newcomer Lucknow Super Giants two nights later. 13. Virat Kohli is no longer the captain in international or franchise cricket. The former India skipper announced his decision to step down as the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the middle of last season. After leading the side for nine years, Kohli had seen some highs and some lows as the leader of the side but he failed to get his hands on the IPL title during his stint as the captain. Kohli's best season as the captain came in 2016 when he single-handedly took RCB to the final. He smashed 973 runs in 16 games with the help of four centuries at a staggering strike rate of over 150. Captain @imVkohli in the zone #VIVOIPL | #RCBvKKR | #Eliminator pic.twitter.com/WtJY6mvsUC — IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) October 11, 2021 Despite choosing not to captain the side, Kohli was one of the first names on RCB's retention list as they named their draft picks ahead of the mega auction that is set to be held in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. Along with Kohli, RCB retained Mohammed Siraj and Glenn Maxwell. With Kohli out of the mix, the Bangalore-based franchise will go shopping for a captain out of the 590 names who are set to go under the hammer in the two-day auction. Here are the five names who could be on RCB's radar as they look for a replacement for Kohli in the upcoming edition of the IPL: 1. David Warner View this post on Instagram Warner might not have had the best of seasons with the bat last year in IPL but his leadership skills can't be questioned. It was the Australia international who led SRH to their only IPL title against Virat Kohli's RCB in the 2016 edition. Warner is a proven performer in the IPL and now that he was left out by SRH, RCB would want to benefit by roping him in and building a team around two Australians (Maxwell and Warner) along with Kohli. 2. Shreyas IyerThat's a FIFTY for the @DelhiCapitals Skipper, Shreyas Iyer. This is his 11th half-century in #VIVOIPL pic.twitter.com/hb15cEKAa7 — IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) April 7, 2019 There are speculations on social media that Shreyas Iyer is a hot favourite pick among franchises and he is set to become one of the most expensive buys in IPL auction ever. Iyer was leading Delhi Capitals before an injury saw him miss a few games and being replaced by Rishabh Pant in the franchise as the captain. Iyer was released by Delhi and according to several reports, RCB has kept a huge chunk of their purse reserved to buy the Mumbai batter and the franchise is looking towards him as a long-term captaincy prospect. 3. Ravichandran Ashwin Early breakthrough for #DelhiCapitals Ashwin strikes in his first over as he dismisses Rohit Shama for a first-ball duck! Live: https://t.co/JnzWMKUUT5#MIvDC #Dream11IPL pic.twitter.com/X62Eyu5nDz — IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) November 5, 2020 Ashwin was a surprise exclusion from the Delhi franchise ahead of the auction as he bowled economically and enjoyed great camaraderie with the captain Rishabh Pant. Ashwin is considered as one of the sharpest minds in world cricket and RCB could use his brains and bring in a fresh approach as they look to win their maiden IPL title. 4. Eoin Morgan Time-out time here in Sharjah. Gill and Morgan bring up a much-needed 50-run partnership between them. While Morgan did not perform as well as he would have liked with the bat, his tactics were spot on. With the experience of winning a World Cup on his resume, Morgan could be a perfect fit as Kohli's successor for RCB. 5. Manish Pandey A six to finish the over. Manish Pandey is on song here.#SRH are 196/2 after 17 overs. #Dream11IPL pic.twitter.com/ZbDSQceUaz — IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) October 27, 2020 A Karnataka guy leading a franchise based out of Bengaluru is a win-win situation for everyone. Manish Pandey has the experience of leading the side in domestic cricket and he has chipped in for SRH as well whenever he got the opportunity. Manish Pandey was Kohli's teammate in the 2008 U19 World Cup and it would be some sight to see the old mates reuniting and helping RCB to their first-ever IPL title. View the full article

  15. The upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will see two new teams -- Ahmedabad and Lucknow -- fighting it out with the existing eight franchises for the title. KL Rahul has been named as the captain of Lucknow while all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been appointed as the skipper of Ahmedabad. Hardik, who has played for the five-time champions Mumbai Indians ever since he made his debut in the IPL, had said that he is super excited to start a new journey in the franchise-based T20 league with Ahmedabad. Kem cho Ahmedabad pic.twitter.com/ZsuaX6PADY — hardik pandya (@hardikpandya7) January 22, 2022 A report has emerged that says Hardik had expressed his desire to lead the Mumbai Indians to the team management and that was one of the main reasons he was let go by the most successful franchise in the history of IPL. "Hardik Pandya wanted to become the Captain of Mumbai Indians. And he had said this to the franchise as well," a journalist said during a panel discussion on Sports Tak's YouTube channel. Watch the video here: Mumbai Indians have won five IPL titles under Rohit Sharma's leadership -- the most by any IPL franchise.
