  1. The Indian cricket team has suffered a huge blow as their explosive batsman at the opening spot, veteran Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out for the rest of the ICC World Cup 2019 with a fractured thumb. Although the southpaw struggled during Team India's warm up game against Bangladesh and the first official game against South Africa, Dhawan seemed to have found his mojo back against Aaron Finch's Australia. Having scored himself a massive 117-run innings despite getting a fractured thumb earlier in the game thanks to a Pat Cummins bouncer, the cricketer not only won the 'Man of the Match' award but also spearheaded the Men in Blue into winning one of the more challenging matches for the team during the ongoing world championship. Being ruled out of just a couple of matches in the initial days of the injury, Dhawan was seen sweating it out in the gym despite having a plastered thumb, with the aim of being 'ready to go' as soon as he is healed and make big runs for his nation. You can make these situations your nightmare or use it an opportunity to bounce back. ð Thank you for all the recovery messages from everyone. ð pic.twitter.com/mo86BMQdDA — Shikhar Dhawan (@SDhawan25) June 14, 2019 Unfortunately, due to a fracture being detected at the base of Dhawan's left thumb which will be in a cast for at least another month, the athlete is out of the World Cup . View this post on Instagram Official Announcement ð¢ð¢ @shikhardofficial ruled out of the World Cup ðð #TeamIndia #CWC19 A post shared by Team India (@indiancricketteam) on Jun 19, 2019 at 4:39am PDT Having said that, the team management of the Bleed Blue army were quick to officially announce youngblood Rishabh Pant as a replacement for the veteran in the Indian cricket squad just a couple of hours since Dhawan's oust was made public. View this post on Instagram An official request has been made to the ICC to replace Shikhar with @rishabpant #TeamIndia #CWC19 A post shared by Team India (@indiancricketteam) on Jun 19, 2019 at 5:34am PDT The team has decided to replace one lefty with another one. While KL Rahul will be opening alongside Rohit Sharma, Pant's role as a batsman is expected to take place at the highly controversial fourth spot of the Indian batting order. Controversial because of the level of talent that was competing for that spot. With masterful players like Dinesh Karthik and Ambati Rayudu whose sturdy nature when it comes to the 50-over format being overlooked, it was Pant's 'single-handedly-six-hitting' explosive batting style that seems to have attracted the selectors going further on this unbeaten World Cup 2019 journey. While Dinesh Karthik is still on the Indian roster (but not in the playing XI), Pant's call might just have brought the biggest heartbreak for Rayudu, who was initially dropped from the team to be replaced with a newcomer like Vijay Shankar. The fans of Indian cricket therefore tried their best to have an insight about Rayudu's feelings towards the latest developments. 2. When Salman's big project 'Bharat' was announced, the first question that made the rounds on social media was that who would be the leading lady. While many obvious fans voted for Katrina Kaif to reunite with him, it was announced that Priyanka Chopra will make a comeback as his leading lady. However, soon rumours were rife that she is secretly engaged to beau Nick Jonas and is also tying the knot on his birthday so she might step back from the project. It wasn't until director Ali Abbas made it official that PC had indeed stepped out, and they were going to announce the leading lady soon. 14. Photo: File French fashion brand Lacoste on Wednesday swapped the crocodile logo on its shirts for the first time in its history for 10 of the most endangered species on the planet. The green Lacoste crocodile -- one of the world's best-known logos -- was replaced by the Sumatran tiger, the Javan rhino and the Cao Vit gibbon on the chest of its classic white polo shirts in a limited edition charity tie-in with the Save Our Species conservation group. All but a handful were sold out within hours of going on sale for $183 immediately after the brand's Paris fashion week show. The number of polo shirts put on sale was directly linked to remaining numbers of each threatened species surviving in the wild -- with only 30 for vaquita porpoises and 231 for Californian condors. Designer Felipe Oliveira Baptista also included camouflaged images of each of the endangered animals in the last 10 looks in his autumn-winter collection. "I think it is a great thing to do, and feels very gratifying if we can do something for these animals," he told AFP. "Lacoste is one of the 10 more recognisable logos in the world with Coca-Cola and Apple." The Portuguese designer said he had to be careful about using the crocodile logo -- which dates from 1933 -- "with respect. I don't like to plaster it everywhere. Either you be very classic with it or very original, and in this case it's quite original I think." Lacoste's crocodile logo still features on the back of the 1,775 shirts. Oliveira Baptista said he took his inspiration for the main collection from the 50,000 trees the Lacoste family planted around their golf course at Saint-Jean-de-Luz in southwest France during World War II. It was also a way of sparing local men from being sent to German forced labor camps, as forestry workers were exempt from conscription, he said. The designer had Princess Diana and the English upper classes at play in mind when he began creating the collection, with some models wearing wellingtons with hunting ponchos and boonie sun hats on top of hoodies. "I got inspired particularly by looking back at pictures of Lady Di: how she wore clothes that were high and low at the same time," he added. "I was looking for something timeless, something that would last more than 6 months."
  15. DAMASCUS: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad replaced his defence minister for the first time since 2012 as part of a government reshuffle announced by the state news agency SANA on Monday. "President Assad issued a decree, the first of 2018, naming General Ali Abdullah Ayoub minister of defence," the agency said, without providing any explanation for the surprise announcement. The 65-year-old was until now the chief of general staff of the armed forces and replaces Fahd Jassem al-Freij. Freij took over in July 2012 after predecessor Daoud Rajha was killed in the bombing of a command centre in Damascus, together with his deputy Assef Shawkat, who was Assad's brother-in-law . Ayoub was born in Latakia, a coastal city in the heartland of the Alawite community to which Assad belongs. The reshuffle also saw two other changes: Mohammed Mazen Ali Yusef was given the industry portfolio and Imad Abdullah Sara, previously the head of the state broadcasting corporation, was named information minister.
  16. Cricketer Virat Kohli (left), Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan (right). Photo: File Star cricketer Virat Kohli is not only shining in the cricket world but has also come up as India?s most valuable brand dethroning Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, according to a report by corporate advisers Duff and Phelps. ?For the first time since 2014, Shah Rukh Khan has slipped from the top ranking and has been replaced by Kohli,? Indian media quoted Duff and Phelps MD Varun Gupta as saying. ?Kohli is now the first choice of brands to engage and attract consumers.? According to the managing director of Puma India, which the cricketer endorses, Kohli has changed the way fitness is looked at in Indian cricket. The Indian media has quoted Puma managing director, Abhishek Ganguly, as saying that Kohli has emphasised the role of an athlete and reshaped cricket in the millennial culture. ?He is a youth icon with effortless style.? Kohli signed an eight-year deal with Puma earlier in the year, becoming the first Indian sportsperson to sign a Rs1 billion endorsement deal with a single brand. The Indian media reported Dull and Phelps Dicrector Aviral Jain as saying that Bollywood celebrities continue to dominate the top 15, but spokespersons like Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and PV Sindhu are providing a tough competition. He added the sportspersons conllectively valued at $180 million which is almost a quarter of the total celebrity brand value of the top 15.
  17. North Korean soldiers dig a trench and plant trees in the area where, on November 13, a defector ran across the border at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) dividing North Korea and South Korea November 22, 2017. ? Reuters SEOUL: North Korea has reportedly replaced guards and fortified a section of its border with South Korea where a North Korean soldier defected last week, while South Korean and US soldiers have been decorated for their role in the defector?s rescue. The North Korean defector was shot and wounded by his fellow soldiers as he dashed into the South Korean side of the Joint Security Area (JSA) last week. The South Korean and US soldiers who led a rescue attempt to drag the gravely injured soldier to safety have been awarded medals, according to US Forces Korea. A group of senior diplomats based in Seoul visited the JSA on Wednesday morning where they saw five North Korean workers digging a deep trench in the area where the soldier had dashed across the line after getting his jeep stuck in a small ditch, a member of the diplomatic delegation told Reuters on Friday. In a photograph of the visit posted to the Twitter account of acting US ambassador to South Korea, Marc Knapper, North Korean workers could be seen using shovels to dig a deep trench on the North Korean side of the line as soldiers stood guard. ?The workers were being watched very closely by the KPA guards, not just the two in the photo, but others out of shot behind the building,? said the diplomat, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the situation. According to an intelligence official cited by South Korea?s Yonhap news agency, the North has replaced the 35-40 soldiers it had guarding the JSA at the time of the incident. ?We?re closely monitoring the North Korean military?s movement in the JSA,? a South Korean defense ministry official told reporters, without confirming the reduction in border guards. ?There are limits as to what we can say about things we know.? Reuters was unable to independently verify the reports, although photos taken by Knapper and other diplomats of soldiers guarding the area where workers were digging the trench showed them dressed in slightly different uniforms to the ones usually worn by North Korea?s JSA guards. Two new trees had also been planted in the small space between the ditch and the line with the South, the diplomat told Reuters, in an apparent effort to make it more difficult for would-be defectors to drive across the ground. Meanwhile, in South Korea, US Forces Korea (USFK) said it had awarded its own JSA soldiers - three South Korean and three US soldiers - the Army Commendation medal in recognition for their efforts in rescuing the defector. The medals were personally handed out by USFK Commander Vincent Brooks in a ceremony on Thursday, according to USFK?s Facebook page. The soldiers had been responsible for dragging the wounded North Korean soldier to safety in a daring rescue seen in security camera footage released by the United Nations Command earlier this week. Pyongyang has not commented on the defection of its soldier, who is now in stable condition despite sustaining multiple injuries sustained from gunshot wounds to his arm and torso. The young soldier, known only by his family name Oh, is a quiet, pleasant man who has nightmares about being returned to the North, his surgeon told Reuters on Thursday.
  18. SEOUL: Samsung Electronics logged a record profit of $10.0 billion for the third quarter and announced a sweeping reshuffle of its top management on Tuesday, seeking to maintain its lead while its heir is in prison. The world's biggest memory chip and smartphone maker has faced multiple challenges since last year, including a humiliating recall of its flagship Galaxy Note 7 handsets and a corruption scandal that engulfed its de facto leader. But its net profits for July to September soared 148 percent on the same period a year ago -- its best for any quarter -- it said in a statement, thanks to strong demand for its memory chips and a recovery in smartphone sales with the roll-out of the new generation Galaxy Note 8. The figures come only two weeks after chief executive Kwon Oh-Hyun resigned, saying the South´s biggest firm was facing an "unprecedented crisis" and its current profitability was "merely a fruit of decisions and investment made in the past". The firm described Tuesday's numbers as an "overall robust performance". Operating profit nearly tripled on-year to 14.5 trillion won -- also a quarterly record -- it said in a regulatory filing, while sales surged to 62.05 trillion won, another all-time high. Samsung Electronics is the key subsidiary of the sprawling Samsung Group, whose heir Lee Jae-Yong was found guilty in August of bribery, perjury and other charges stemming from payments to the secret confidante of ousted president Park Geun-Hye. Lee, who was jailed for five years, says he is innocent and is appealing. Samsung Electronics also announced Tuesday the first major reshuffle in its top leadership since 2014, when the wider group´s chairman Lee Kun-Hee suffered a heart attack that left him bedridden. Samsung Electronics replaced each of the three co-CEOs who lead its semiconductor, mobile and TV units with younger executives, while chief financial officer Lee Sang-Hoon -- known to be close to the founding Lee family -- was named chairman of the board, succeeding Kwon. It is the first time the company has separated the roles of board chairman and CEO, it said -- a standard recommendation to improve corporate governance. 'Longer-term horizon' Samsung's profits and share price have rocketed this year, as global chip prices have soared amid booming demand for the high-powered processors used in handsets, computers and cloud storage servers. It said separately it would double its dividends in 2018, and confirmed a further share buyback for the fourth quarter. The firm provides memory chips for PCs, servers and mobile gadgets including those belonging to industry rivals including Apple, with the "component business" helping the firm cushion a fall in sales of its own devices. Samsung has sustained and widened its lead in the market partly by investing massively in building and expanding semiconductor factories, often faster than its competitors. Its investment in infrastructure, mostly on chip plants, will reach a whopping 46.2 trillion won just for this year, compared to 25.5 trillion won in 2016, it said. The firm operates the world´s biggest semiconductor plant in the city of Pyeongtaek, 70 kilometres (44 miles) south of Seoul, and is upgrading or expanding many of its production lines there and elsewhere. Such aggressive investment has stoked concerns that increased supply may drive down prices and eventually dent the firm´s own profits in subsequent quarters. But senior vice-president Chun Se-Won told a conference call: "We are looking at a longer-term horizon... with a goal of boosting our business capabilities for the next two or three years and beyond." Samsung shares rose 1.92 percent to close at 2.75 million won on the Seoul stock market. Kim Yang-Jae, analyst at KTB Investment & Securities, said profits would rise further in the fourth quarter, with global semiconductor prices continuing to rise into next year. "Samsung´s display unit would also see profits grow as it supplies panels to Apple´s iPhone X," Kim said, forecasting a new record operating profit of 15 trillion won in the fourth quarter.
  19. Cars made by Hyundai Motor Co are parked in the compound of the South Korean automaker's plant in Beijing, China August 30, 2017. Picture taken August 30, 2017. Photo: Reuters File SEOUL: Hyundai Motor has replaced the head of its Chinese operation, media reports said on Saturday, as it struggles to regain a foothold in the world?s biggest auto market amid a diplomatic spat between the Asian trading partners. Tao Hung Than has been named the new head of Hyundai?s China division replacing Chang Won-shin and will take up the post on Monday, Yonhap news agency and other local media outlets reported, citing the company. Hyundai Motor officials reached by telephone could not immediately confirm the reports. Tao, who is of Chinese descent, has been instrumental in Hyundai?s entry to the Chinese market, Yonhap said. Hyundai recently suffered a suspension of production in China stemming from a supply disruption, adding to investor concerns about the carmaker?s progress in China. It posted its smallest quarterly profit in five years for the quarter ending in June. South Korean firms are weathering a Chinese backlash over the country?s decision to deploy the THAAD U.S. missile defense system to counter threats from nuclear-armed North Korea. China says the system poses a threat to its national security.
  20. Hrithik Roshan is a great dad, an A+ movie star and still in shape to be on the cover of Playgirl (remember that?). And if that wasn't enough, he's even got his off-duty style uniform right. Henley T-shirts tickle his bones as much as his classic jeans do. Besides, he's also been in a little bit of a bomber jacket phase lately. All summed up, he's on our radar for all the right reasons—his style is easy, relatable and young and just the right amount of playful. But to be honest, he has replaced Varun Dhawan as a streetwear star—all thanks to a little help from Anaita Shroff and her styling company, Style Cell. Last evening at a luxury watch event, the actor achieved the sartorially impossible feat of making casual wear look supremely polished and sharp! And while most actors tend to wear boring suits, we are offering total brownie points to Mr. Roshan for wearing an off-duty outfit to a luxury event. © Viral Bhayani Wearing blue joggers with a simple grey T-shirt, the actor turned to the simple life for style inspo for this event. But what really mattered here were his colour accents, jacket details, and choice of footwear. Which to us looks splendidly done and is making this a great outfit to cop. But there's a big chance you're thinking he ventured too far because the shiny kicks and the paneled jacket does look like a combo we wouldn't pair together. They're both too dramatic to be paired at once. © Viral Bhayani But here's how Mr. Roshan has made it work: First off, the basic T-shirt has a contrast pocket to it. Which quite evidently, has conveniently befriended the running stitch on the inside of the jacket. Thank god, he decided to roll the sleeves or else, we wouldn't have found ourselves applauding this outfit. Two, in all honesty, the patent leather sneakers that look like something Jaden Smith would wear to the bathroom, look absolutely dope. Sure, they're shiny but they have a personality to exude. All in all, a great style move we see here! Lastly, a message for him: if it's your mind frame that's making you dress this good, we're hoping this stays for long and for good.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, according to sources. The committee includes ministers of communications, petroleum, commerce, industries and production, information, law, planning, railways, food and power and water. However, the water and power ministry was amended by the new premier when his cabinet was formed, creating a ministry of energy that will include earlier portfolios of water and power and petroleum and natural resources. The prime minister, who held the portfolio of petroleum and natural resources ministry in the previous cabinet of Nawaz Sharif, will head the new power ministry. 22. US President Donald Trump congratulates White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus during a swearing in ceremony for senior staff at the White House in Washington, US, January 22, 2017. REUTERS/Carlos Barria/Files WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump replaced his beleaguered White House chief of staff, Reince Priebus, after only six months on the job on Friday, installing retired General John Kelly in his place in a major shake-up of his top team. Trump announced the move in a tweet a day after his new communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, accused Priebus of leaking information to reporters in a profanity-laced tirade. Kelly, 67, a retired four-star Marine Corps general, was most recently secretary for the Department of Homeland Security. He was hired with the goal of bringing more discipline to the White House, a senior White House official said. Trump issued his decision just as he landed aboard Air Force One after a visit to Long Island. Priebus was on the plane with the Republican president and made no comment. Reporters had noticed no sign of stress from Priebus during the day. Trump had lost confidence in Priebus, privately questioning his competence after major legislative items failed to pass the U.S. Congress, a Trump confidant said. A source close to Priebus said the former Republican National Committee (RNC) chairman turned in his resignation on Thursday night after Scaramucci's rant against him was published by the New Yorker magazine. A senior White House official said Trump had informed Priebus two weeks ago that he would be replacing him and that the move had no connection to Scaramucci, whose hiring a week ago prompted Sean Spicer, a Priebus ally, to abruptly resign as press secretary. After frequent conversations with Kelly, Trump recently warmed up to the idea of naming Kelly chief of staff to more effectively manage personnel and offered it to him earlier this week, a senior White House official said. Kelly starts on Monday. Carrying an umbrella, Trump approached reporters as he stepped off Air Force One, with rain storming down. "Reince is a good man. John Kelly will do a fantastic job. General Kelly has been a star, done an incredible job thus far, respected by everybody. He's a great, great American. Reince is a good man," Trump said. Priebus' 189-day tenure was the shortest in modern history for a White House chief of staff. He had hoped to stay on at least a year but struggled to manage his unpredictable boss and was unable to get a handle on conflicting factions in the White House who have frequently squabbled. In a statement, Priebus said it had been one of the great honours of his life serving Trump and the country. "I will continue to serve as a strong supporter of the president's agenda and policies. I can't think of a better person than General John Kelly to succeed me and I wish him God's blessings and great success," he said. Trump loyalists had chafed at Priebus, feeling he had installed his RNC allies at the White House and overlooked the people close to Trump who helped get him elected president in November. But Priebus allies felt he was an important link to establishment Republicans in Washington as the capital attempted to adjust to the anti-establishment style of the president. "He has served the president and the American people capably and passionately," House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said of his close friend in a statement. "He has achieved so much, and he has done it all with class. I could not be more proud to call Reince a dear friend." White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said she did not think Priebus' exit would affect the White House's relationship with the Republican Party. "I think we've still got a good relationship. We're going to continue working with the party and doing what we came here to do," she said.
  23. FILE PHOTO: French President Emmanuel Macron and Chief of the Defence Staff French Army General Pierre de Villiers arrive in a command car for the traditional Bastille Day military parade on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, France, July 14, 2017 - Reuters PARIS: General Francois Lecointre has been appointed as the new head of the French army, a military source said on Wednesday. Lecointre, a member of Prime Minister Edouard Philippe's staff who served in the army in Bosnia, replaces General Pierre de Villiers, who resigned abruptly on Wednesday after a clash with President Emmanuel Macron over defence budget cuts. In a statement, 60 year-old Pierre de Villiers said he had tried to maintain a French defense force with the ability to do an increasingly difficult job within the financial constraints imposed on it, but was no longer able to sustain that. "In the current circumstances I see myself as no longer able to guarantee the robust defense force I believe is necessary to guarantee the protection of France and the French people, today and tomorrow, and to sustain the aims of our country," he said. Macron had accepted his resignation, de Villiers added. A fierce row broke out last week between the two men just two months after Macron was elected, and just as France prepared for the military pomp of a July 14 Bastille Day parade where Macron's U.S. counterpart Donald Trump was the guest of honor. De Villiers, appearing before a closed-door hearing of parliamentarians - had used strong language to protest at the 850 million euro ($979.46 million) defense budget cut Macron was making as part of his efforts to rein in state spending. "I won't let myself be fucked like that," he said according to two parliamentary sources. "I may be stupid, but I know when I am being had." Macron had gone public with his rebuke. "I have made commitments, I am your boss," he said in a speech to dozens of top army officers and their families.
  24. A Metallica cover band distraught after its equipment was stolen has been able to return to stage after a gift from surprise benefactors -- the metal legends themselves. Blistered Earth, a four-piece band from Spokane, Washington that covers Metallica classics and emulates the group's headbanging look, said a trailer with all its gear was snatched after a show last week in Portland, Oregon. After two days, the band -- which lost three guitars, two bass guitars and a drum-kit plus an array of amplifiers and pedals -- said everything had been replaced. "Sometimes when bad things happen it really brings out the best in people," Blistered Earth wrote on Facebook. James Hetfield "and the rest of the guys in Metallica (thanx guys) have seen fit to replace our equipment. Thank you guys!!" There was no immediate word from Metallica. The band on May 10 begins in Baltimore an extensive tour of North America and Europe after completing a leg in Latin America.
  25. Women's treatment in sport has always been a manifestation of wider gender inequality and, as sports evolved and professionalised, became self-perpetuating. During the 2016 World T20 in India, the International Cricket Council (ICC) funded all the men's teams to fly business class, but paid for the women's teams to fly economy class. In football the differences are even starker: there was £22m in prize money for the last men’s football World Cup, but only £630,000 for the women’s tournament. The roots of this discrepancy lie in the birth of modern sport, 150 years ago. Victorian society viewed sports as "inseparable from the philosophy of Muscular Christianity, which defined itself against femininity and 'softness'," Tony Collins - the author of Sport in Capitalist Society - claims. The huge funding disparity between male and female sport means that women have had fewer opportunities to play sport, have suffered from inadequate coaching and facilities compared with those enjoyed by men, and have been paid meagre sums, even for playing international sport. © Reuters And that's exactly why the Swedish national football team has decided to make a difference. Ahead of the Women's Day on 8 March, Sweden has decided to drop the names on the back of their women's team shirts in favour of messages that inspire and motivate women to show that everything is possible. © Reuters The Swedish women's team, who finished second at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, released the new shirts this week as they prepared to take part in the Algarve Cup. The players were asked to pick tweets from prominent Swedish women to be printed on the back of the shorts where their names would normally appear. Messages from Swedish journalist Frida Soderlund ("to try is to be successful. The result is secondary as long as you dare") and stand-up comedian Karin Adelskold ("Women want different things") were also printed. © Twitter “The national team shirt is an important symbol and it constantly reminds us that we can win whatever game it is in whatever competitions. There is always a need to show young women that it is possible to succeed and that no one should feel limited in what they can achieve and particularly not because of their ***,” Sweden captain Lotta Schelin said. © Twitter The communication director at the Swedish FA, Niklas Bodell, said: “The initiative is first and foremost to, with the help of the national team, highlight the power that comes with doing things together and the women’s team’s success is a good example of that. We also hope that it can inspire people to stand up for each other, notwithstanding who you are or where you come from.” © Twitter The powerful message seems to have inspired the Swedish team who defeated Australia 1-0 in their first game of the Algarve Cup, wearing the new shirts.
