The Indian Premier League (IPL) unveiled the new format for the 2022 edition of the tournament on Friday, which would see the ten teams split into two virtual groups for a total of 70 league matches. Mumbai Indians, the five-time IPL champions are in Group A (one of out of the two groups that have been implemented this season). According to the revised regulations, each team will play its group members twice and the team in the same row as the other group once, while only playing the other four teams once. MI will face Kolkata, Rajasthan, DC, and Lucknow twice. In addition, they will face CSK twice. All of the strong teams will be played twice, however, the Sunrisers, RCB, Punjab, and Gujarat Titans will only be played once. This according to Chopra, will upset skipper Rohit Sharma and his teammates a bit. The former India opener also stated that he prefers the model to the one employed by the Indian T20 league over the one that is commonly used by the International Cricket Council (ICC) during World Cup competitions, in which the top teams from each group advance to the knockout stages. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), the most expensive franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history, spent money like water during the two-day IPL 2022 mega auction in Bengaluru. The Lucknow-based franchise was the only team out of all 10 who were left with zero cash in their purse after the conclusion of the two-day auction. Led by former India opening batter Gautam Gambhir, who was appointed as the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants, at the auction table, Lucknow went shopping for all-rounders and they got plenty of them in their squad. The likes of Marcus Stoinis and Jason Holder will be supported by Indian all-rounders like Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya. The Super Giants have assembled.
