  1. For a batsman who has been in scintillating form in the ongoing limited-overs series against the West Indies, Virat Kohli couldn't do much in the 2nd One-Day International (ODI) at Visakhapatnam. On a day, where his teammates accumulated loads of runs, the Indian captain was dismissed for a golden duck. But, despite missing out, Kohli didn't fail to entertain cricket fans. The 2nd ODI saw the likes of Rohit Sharma (159) and KL Rahul (102) in superlative form as they added 227 runs for the first wicket. But, the carnage wasn't restricted to the Indian openers. Following their dismissals, Shreyas Iyer (53) and Rishabh Pant (39) upped the ante with some quickfire knocks. On the second delivery of the 48th over, Iyer smashed Keemo Paul for a single and raised his bat in celebration, assuming he had reached his fifty. However, the right-hander was still one run away from his half-century - something he eventually realised. As he raised his bat, everyone in the Indian dressing room got up to inform Iyer about his premature celebration. Shreyas Iyer raises his bat on 49 Watch “Iyer” on #Vimeo https://t.co/ujUkFXAYo2 — Sanjeev kumar (@SanjSam33) December 18, 2019 Amongst all, Kohli stood out giggling over the hilarious incident while signalling Iyer to stop the early celebration. The video of the entire episode has taken social media by storm with the fans seemingly enjoying Kohli's reaction. Trailing 1-0 in the three-match series, Team India put up a strong batting performance in Vizag. Rohit emerged as the top run-scorer on the back of a blistering knock, while Rahul played a supporting role with his brilliant hundred. Chasing a total of 387 runs, the Windies brigade was undone by Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami who bagged three wickets apiece. View the full article
  2. The Bigg Boss 13 house has become totally interesting since the time Paras Chhabra and Sidharth Shukla have been sent to the secret room. Their bromance and active commentary on contestants are being extensively loved by the fans. However, to make their stay in the secret room even more interesting, Bigg Boss announces a task for Paras, in which he becomes a commentator. In the latest promo, which was released on Tuesday, Paras is seen making contestants perform weird tasks. He asks Rashami Desai to paint her entire face and dress up like a clown to entertain everyone in the house. She accepts to do it and starts roaming around with a clown face inside the house and also dances in the garden area dressed as a clown. Mahira lets go of the captaincy as she gives the letter sent by Asim's family to him instead of destroying it. However, when Asim gets Mahira's letter sent by her family, he destroys it. In the latest episode of Bigg Boss 13, Himanshi Khuranna got evicted from the house due to lack of votes and her friends Asim Riaz and Shefali Jariwala were seen completely heartbroken. 4. The Indian cricket team was made to look like one of those below average teams against Kieron Pollard's West Indies side in the second T20I match at the Greenfields Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. After winning the toss, Pollard decided to bowl first and despite getting a surprising beating at the hands of Shivam Dube in the first half of India's batting innings, were able to make amendments. Expertly gauging the changing pitch conditions with time, Pollard's bowlers were able to limit India's total to a sub-par 170. How do you feel about us chasing this? #IndvWI #ItsOurGame #MenInMaroon pic.twitter.com/VLSWECTtRB — Windies Cricket (@windiescricket) December 8, 2019 And thanks to some awful fielding by the Men in Blue, it was easier than expected for the Windies to win the second match and tie the series at 1-1. Having said that, there was this brief moment in the early moments of India's bowling attack which had a greater significance in the chemistry of Team India which goes beyond the final result of one match. After a couple of overs by Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, skipper Virat Kohli walked to the middle of the field to have a brief meeting with Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma. Evidently, Kohli had made up his mind to give Chahar a small break from the bowling rotation and introduce Washington Sundar into the attack. © Reuters But this is where Sharma stepped in and opined that it would be for the best to let Chahar bowl one more over because ending his spell was important and without a lot of discussion, Kohli obliged. It's a debate for another day that Chahar had a really expensive over and both of the Windies openers sent his deliveries for multiple boundaries. However, it is worth noticing how Sharma is being a part of such mid-game decision-making more and more with every game. And based on the success he has had in Kohli's absence and as the leader of the most successful franchises of the Indian Premier League, his inputs most definitely have credibility. Another reason why Kohli has started approaching Sharma for his thoughts is the absence of the former Indian captain and wicket-keeper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Not too long ago, it was Dhoni who'd help Kohli make important decisions at crucial moments during a match. As one of the most experienced players of the current Team India and the vice-captain, Sharma has definitely filled the void that MS Dhoni has left behind. © Reuters A month ago, rumours of a tiff between Kohli and Sharma had filled the sports columns of every tabloid and news website. It is therefore refreshing to see such teamwork and two of the best cricketers in the world working together as a unit. View the full article
  5. For someone who wasn't satisfied with his body early in his career, Virat Kohli, now, has arguably become the face of fitness in the Indian cricket team. Watching his diet and sweating it out in the gym, Kohli has transformed himself into a vital asset for Team India, with his fitness levels on par with other top-class athletes, even other than cricket. It was Kohli's stress on the need to gain adequate fitness levels which eventually sparked a revolution in the Indian team which is now one of the most athletic sides in international cricket. But, while Kohli can surely be credited for kickstarting a fitness revolution amongst his teammates, he, despite his chiselled physique and unmatched work ethic, is not the fastest man in the Indian dressing room. It's Ravindra Jadeja instead. Often labelled as the best fielder in world cricket, Jadeja needs no introduction when it comes to brilliance in the field. Whether it's converting singles into doubles, diving full length to stop the ball or hitting the stumps with perfection, Jadeja is an asset many cricket teams can only dream of. Love group conditioning sessions. And when Jaddu is in the group, itâs almost impossible to outrun him ðð. @RishabhPant17 @imjadeja pic.twitter.com/QMK4nysoFh â Virat Kohli (@imVkohli) November 25, 2019 While Jadeja's athleticism is well documented, his ability to outrun his Team India mates was testified by captain Kohli following their conditioning session. Taking to Twitter, the Indian captain shared a picture of himself in the company of Jadeja and Rishabh Pant, and captioned it: "Love group conditioning sessions. And when Jaddu is in the group, it's almost impossible to outrun him". On the other hand, India continue to dominate their home season and currently occupy the top spot in the ICC World Test Championship table with 360 points, well ahead of the second-placed Australia. The Kohli-led brigade began their World Test Championship campaign with a 2-0 whitewash in West Indies and carried their fine form to the home season where they crushed South Africa and, more recently, Bangladesh. While the Indian pace battery have undoubtedly emerged as a positive for India's recent success at home, Jadeja has also made his mark in the role of India's No. 6 batsman. The Saurashtra all-rounder scored three fifty-plus scores, including a knock of 91 runs, in five matches batting higher up the order. And, his batting position further allows Kohli to be flexible with his team selection. After cutting Bangladesh a sorry figure with a 2-0 whitewash in the recently-concluded Test series, Team India will now host West Indies in three Twenty20 (T20) Internationals and a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series, slated to begin from 6th December in Hyderabad. 6. “Expect the unexpected” is a phrase most of us have heard at some point in our lives, but how often is it that people are actually ready for such an occasion? Almost the entire city of Lucknow was completely unprepared for Sher Khan, a cricket fan from Afghanistan who was in town for his national team's One Day International match against the West Indies. While Rashid Khan's talented but inexperienced squad fell to Kieron Pollard's men after losing by seven wickets, it turns out that it wasn't the best of days for the fan as well. West Indies won the 1st ODI under the captaincy of Kieron Pollard against Afghanistan by 7 wickets. Shai Hope and Roston Chase had a match winning partnership after losing two early wickets and Roston Chse is also the Man of the Match with a fighting score of 94 runs.#bolt pic.twitter.com/kX1f8uEWB8 — BOLT Cricket â¡ (@BoltCricket) November 6, 2019 Khan, who flew down to the City of Nawabs a day ahead of the match, was unable to find himself a place to spend the night in the whole city despite multiple hotels having vacant rooms. According to an ANI report, Khan hopped from hotel to hotel, looking for a place for himself but was refused every single time because of his 8-feet-two-inch tall built. © Twitter Disappointed in the city, a helpless Sher Khan approached the Lucknow Police for help, who took the Kabul resident to Hotel Rajdhani in Naka area and made arrangements for him to spend Tuesday night. However, that wasn't the end of the cricket fan's misery as hundreds of people gathered at the gate of Khan's hotel to get a glimpse of the man. "As many as 200 people have come to see him. He is very disturbed," hotel owner Ranu told ANI on Wednesday. Afraid for the visitor's health and personal space, the Lucknow Police took the initiative to escort him to the Ekana Stadium ahead of the first of three ODIs between the two international teams. The fact that the Lucknow Police managed the situation with such professionalism and made the Afghan visitor feel safe in an unknown city is commendable and deserves respect and recognition. While the entire city gave up on him, it was the police that had the helpless man's back. View the full article
  7. As a child, I've always dreamt of appliances that I could control with a remote; simply because I am lazy and don't want to get up to switch off my lights or fans. Now that IoT devices are becoming more affordable, we now have smart bulbs that don't cost a bomb. Xiaomi is one of those companies that makes a smart bulb that costs a fraction of whatever else is available to buy. Xiaomi already makes Air Purifiers, LED strips and now has brought the 'Mi Smart Bulb' to India via crowdfunding. It costs Rs 999 for people who choose to back the product while the retail price could be anywhere between Rs 1,200 and Rs 1,500. Other companies such as Philips and Wipro do make similar products but are not as aggressively priced as Xiaomi's offering. © Xiaomi Unlike Phillips Hue smart lights, the Mi Smart Bulb does not require a bridge to operate. It connects directly to your Wifi and can be controlled from either the Mi Home app or the Yeelight app. You can use the app to customise the different moods for your room straight from your smartphone, as long as there is an internet connection. Setting it up is quite rudimentary and easy as you will have to first switch on and off the bulb five times. The bulb will then light up with rainbow colours signifying that is ready to pair with your smartphone. You then need to open the Mi Home app, find the bulb and pair the two devices. © Xiaomi Please note, the Mi Smart Bulb uses an E27 base which means you need to screw in the bulb into your lamp. If you own an older lamp with a B22 base, you can buy the converter from any local electrical shop. I hooked up the Mi Smart Bulb with one of my floor lamps and my bedside lamp with automated schedule and custom scenes. While watching a movie, I could simply change the mood to a preset from the app that is apt for movie viewing. Similarly, the Mi Smart Bulb can produce up to 16 million colours. You can set any colour you want as it uses 4 Red, 4 Green, 2 Blue and 12 White LEDs and adjust the intensity of the light according to your preference from the Mi Home app. © MensXP Now, about that childhood dream of mine of not wanting to get up to switch on or off my lamp; the Mi Home app gives you the option to schedule the on or off timings. You can even turn it off manually from your phone but it's just easier to have a schedule in place. For example, both my floor lamp and the bedside lamp are scheduled to switch on at 6:30 PM every day. You can also assign a specific colour or scene in the same schedule. There are 9 preset scenes you can choose from but my go-to scene is the “Warm Home” scene. It gives a bright yellow hue that almost matched with other bulbs in the house. The intensity is slightly brighter by default which can be adjusted from the Mi Home app. Similarly, both smart bulbs are also scheduled to go off at midnight, the time everyone in the house is either in bed or is already asleep. If you want to be even lazier, you can even hook the smart bulbs with Google Assistant or Alexa and control it by using the virtual assistants. The Xiaomi Mi Smart Bulb is probably the most affordable and easiest way to make your room smart. Currently, it is the cheapest option to buy and works flawlessly with Xiaomi's Mi Home ecosystem. For Rs 999, it is by far the best option in the market right now and you can keep expanding your setup to make your entire home smart. The only drawback is the E27 base, however, you can always buy the converter to make it work with all your older lamp bases.

  10. Going into the 2019 Asian Cup, the Japanese football team was looked upon as one of the top contenders for the coveted title. They began their campaign with convincing wins over Turkmenistan, Oman and Uzbekistan in the Group Stage before overcoming a resilient Saudi Arabia side in the Round of 16. A 1-0 victory over Vietnam in the quarters saw them setting a date a semifinals date with Iran who were eventually steamrolled 0-3 by the 'Samurai Blue'. A prolific run in the tournament finally placed them in the all-important final where they found dark horse Qatar standing in their way of the Asian Cup title. AP But, it was Qatar whose spirited run found a fairy-tale ending. Thanks to goals from Almoez Ali, Abdulaziz Hatem and Akram Afif, Qatar lifted their maiden Asian Cup trophy and made their intentions clear ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup which will be hosted by them. Japan's Takumi Minamino scored a goal for his side, but couldn't save the four-time Asian Cup champions from defeat in the final. Then, the expression can be so funny that it turns you into a meme. That's exactly what happened to Brock Lesnar during a match on Sunday. During the WWE Royal Rumble match, Lesnar defeated his opponent Finn Balor via submission after just under nine minutes in the middle of the ring using his Kimura lock and a meme was born. 12. It feels good when someone compliments your sincerity and dedication towards your work. It feels really good when that 'someone' is Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. Before the 20x Grand Slam champion and World Ranked three, Roger Federer had one of the best matches of the 2019 Australia Open (AO) against World Rank 14, Stefanos Tsitsipas, which eventually led to the two-time reigning champion's exit from the tournament, the Swiss had some trouble getting around the stadium. On Saturday, a video uploaded by Australian Open's official Twitter handle became the talk of the town. In what was a very brief moment which will be lost in all the glitz and glamour of the tournament, one exceptionally brave security guard stopped Federer from entering the locker room as he didn't have his identification card on him. Even @rogerfederer needs his accreditation ð#AusOpen (via @Eurosport_UK) pic.twitter.com/oZETUaygSE — #AusOpen (@AustralianOpen) January 19, 2019 Sure enough, even the FedEx himself requires an accreditation. After the video went viral, the security guard became a star overnight as the internet commended his devotion to his job which prevented him from making an exception for someone as big and famous as Federer himself. Cricket legend and one of India's biggest influences online, Sachin Tendulkar joined the bandwagon and lauded not just the guard but also the Federer himself who calmly waited for his teammate to bring his card and for the guard to verify it before letting them in. Good to watch the security officer doing his job well at the @AustralianOpen. The manner in which @rogerfederer reacted was commendable as well. Such actions are not common today and they just increase the respect people have for great athletes like Roger. https://t.co/wvm24DOhbA — Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) January 20, 2019 In today's day and age, it is a common thing to witness a big name in any industry to lose their cool and snap at others. But as the master blaster very rightly mentioned, Federer is one of those rare celebrities who is not only extremely humble but also treats everyone from the security guard to his biggest rivals in the world of tennis, equally and such actions make us have more and more respect for the legend. With Federer out of the AO, the 2019 edition is destined to have a new champion. After Andy Murray's surprising first round defeat and Federer's exit yesterday, all eyes are now Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
  13. Setting up LED light strips is not something new as gamers have been using this technique for their setups for a while. However, with home automation becoming more accessible and IFTTT is advancing at a rapid pace to make it more affordable. You can control lights from your smartphone and change colours with infinite possibilities. You can setup different moods, lighting effects and scenes straight from the palm of your hand. Currently, the only two reliable brands that sell smart LED light strips in India are Phillips and Yeelight. I chose the latter to set up my room because it costs exactly half as much as the Phillips Hue light strip. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla The Yeelight Aurora Smart LED Light strip costs Rs 3,200 in India while the Phillips equivalent costs Rs 6,000. Of course, I would end up using the cheaper option because it does the same exact job for cheaper. You can always use other light strips from other brands; however, we aren't sure about whether their ecosystems or even their apps are reliable. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla A smart LED strip can be used for various purposes, such as lighting up the back end of a TV/Monitor so that it reduces eye strain. We can even use these light strips for indoor decorations during parties or for festivals like Diwali. What's cool is that you can even sync the Yeelight Smart LED Light strip with some of their other lighting products to get that uniform look. The Yeelight lightstrip supports 16 million colors and goes up to 140 lumens, which results in better illumination at a really affordable price. How To Set It Up Setting up the Yeelight Smart LED light strip is quite simple and straight forward. You will need to follow these steps below to get started: 1. Download the Yeelight app on your Android/iOS device. 2. Launch the app to see your listed products i.e. the Yeelight Smart LED Light strip. 3. Follow instructions to pair your device and light strips using Wi-FI and Bluetooth 4. If you need to reset your Yeelight LED Light strip, follow this instructional video below: 5. You're now ready to use the light strip How To Customise Colours And Set Scenes Once you're all setup, you can change the colours of your light strip according to your liking. I chose the colour red as all my PC components were also using the same hue and I like uniformity in my workspace. All you need to do is go to the device page, tap on your product and then select your colour to your liking. You can even change the brightness level to your liking, this comes in handy when you're watching a movie or having a date night. © Akshay Bhalla If you don't want to manually change colours every single time, you can also setup scenes so that you don't have to manually tap on a colour each time. You can also add lighting effects/moods in scenes such as a sunrise effect or night mode. In my party scene, I've setup a yellow light that would flicker like a candle. You can also customise the number of times you want the light to flicker and the duration in the customisations tab. As we said before, lighting effects are limitless if you know what you're doing. Automation The great thing about the Yeelight Smart LED that is compatible with Google Assistant and Amazon Echo. It even works with Siri Shortcuts if you are an iPhone that works similarly to aforementioned voice assistants. Here's how you set it up with Google Assistant Open the Google Home app and tap on the Add icon. Select Set up device Works with Google and search for Yeelight. Tap on it to open the Xiaomi login page. This action will link your Xiaomi account and your Google Home account. Sign in using the same credentials that you used to sign-in to your Yeelights app. Assign the Yeelight Smart Light strip to a room Give a nickname if you want to use your own phrase Siri Shortcuts © Akshay Bhalla Siri Shortcuts work only after you setup a scene on the Yeelight app. After setting up you can add a Siri Shortcut straight from the Yeelight App and it will ask you record your phrase. Since I have two scenes setup, I've recorded my phrases as “Turn on Gaming Lights”or “Turn on Party Lights”. So there you have it, you can now have super cool looking room that is completely automated. You can always use cheaper LED light strips that come with a remote to change colours. However, since these aren't compatible with Digital voice assistants or have IFTTT support, you will be limited to using single colours and lack customisation options.
  14. Apple has introduced some cool and hidden features on iOS which you can find deep within the settings menu in iPhones. You can check out all the hidden iOS 12 tricks we found during our tests here. The person who tweeted about the feature said that it could be used as a way to cheat on a test. © MensXP After checking out the feature for ourselves, “Live Listen” is targeted towards people with hearing loss. It was introduced in a software update in September for Apple's AirPods and basically lets people with hearing listen in via the Bluetooth enabled earbuds. Basically, after turning on the feature you can point your phone towards the person you want to hear speak. You basically get to hear what the person is saying through the hearing aid feature on the AirPod. Apple describes it as "Made for iPhone hearing aids, sound processors, and now AirPods can help you have better conversations in loud places. Just turn on the Live Listen feature and move your iPhone toward the people you're talking with.¹ Live Listen uses the microphone to pick up what they're saying more clearly.” Here's how you can turn on the “Live Listen” feature: © Twitter Go to Settings Control Center Customize Controls. Turn on Hearing. 2. Put AirPods in the ear and open Control Center 3. Tap the ear icon, it should say “Live Listen” 4. To get clear audio, place the iPhone's chin facing the person to hear what they have to say. It is unclear if Apple is already aware of the situation, and if it will do something about it. Perhaps can bring in a new update where it would play a sound to alert people around the phone that the Live Listen feature is activated. For now, please be responsible and respect other people's privacy.

  17. After blanking their opponents 3-0 in the T20 International (T20I) series, the Pakistan cricket team was busy giving New Zealand a run for their money in the One-Day Internationals (ODIs). Trailing 0-1 in the ODI series, Pakistan made a comeback to level the proceedings 1-1 before rain spoiled their chances in the third and final game. What awaited next was a stern test of their character, as Sarfraz Ahmed's men geared up for the three-match Test series against the Kiwis. And, the fact that Pakistan bowled New Zealand out for a mere 153 runs in the first innings, showed that they meant business. While Babar Azam and Asad Shafiq looked good with the willow in the first innings, the bowling masterclass of Hasan Ali and Yasir Shah ensured Pakistan needed just 176 runs to win the Test and take a 1-0 lead. © Twitter/@TheRealPCB Needing 139 runs with ten wickets in hand at the start of Day 4, Pakistan and their fans would have surely felt at ease against the Kiwis, who were probably ruled out of the game. But, neither the two playing sides nor any cricket pundit could have possibly anticipated what eventually unfolded during the day's play at the Sheikh Zayed stadium in Abu Dhabi. The fourth day's play was an apt reminder of the many run-chases Pakistan have barbecued over the years. Despite losing three wickets early on, Sarfraz's side rarely looked in trouble - courtesy a gritty 82-run partnership between Azhar Ali and Shafiq. But, some mediocre batting and a maiden five-wicket haul of debuting left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel handed New Zealand a thrilling, even unexpected, four-run win. With Pakistan botching away a run-chase yet again, the mood in their camp was understandably damp. But, at the same time, New Zealand's dressing room was buzzing with celebratory noise. For the Kiwis, it was undoubtedly a special win which called for an equally special celebration. 18. Ahead of the 2018 Asia Cup, cricket fans and pundits seemed pretty sure about the competition between India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka for the all-important trophy. While some anticipated Bangladesh to spring a surprise or two, few would have expected anything at all from the likes of Afghanistan and Hong Kong. But, since the first game, the ongoing tournament continues to offer surprises. It all began with Bangladesh recording a 137-run rout of Sri Lanka in the tournament opener. Then, it was Afghanistan who romped to a 91-run win to send the Lankans packing. The fourth match of the tournament saw Hong Kong almost pulling off an upset against India before eventually losing the game by 26 runs. © BCCL For a team that is still an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), Hong Kong clearly punched above their weight to give India a surprising scare. Chasing a total of 285 runs, Hong Kong got off to a roaring 174-run start with both openers Nizakat Khan (92) and Anshuman Rath (73) notching up their respective fifties. But, a middle-order collapse saw them being restricted to 259/8 in their quota of 50 overs. Hong Kong did lose the game, which they probably think they should've, but there is no denying that the team packs a punch and is destined to do better in the future. Their performance against India also saw them earning a lot of praise from the cricket bigwigs and fans alike. But, the best gesture for Hong Kong came from the Indian team themselves. Or imagine you're running a marathon and right when you were about to cross the finish line you trip and someone else wins the race. The reason why I am giving you these examples is that, no matter how painful or frustrated you feel when such things happen, nothing can even come close to how Japan is feeling right now. © Reuters Until the 52nd minute, Japan and all those who were glued to their TV sets were hopeful that the Blue Samurai will create history by qualifying in the FIFA World Cup 2018 quarter-finals as they were leading by 2-0. Till the 93rd minute, there was still some hope left but by the 94th minute, all hopes were brutally crushed, when Belgium's Nacer Chadli scored the winning goal and paved way for Belgium's victory. © Reuters However, this match has put Japan in a new light as a team, that not only gave a tough competition to Belgium on-field, but also set an example in front of the whole world with their off-field heartwarming gestures. 21. Following a two-year ban from the tournament over the sensational spot-fixing case, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were desperate to restore their pride on the back of a successful outing in the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). They began their campaign with a win over defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) and then reached the Playoffs with a second-place finish in the points tally. The influence-peddling antics of an 'enthusiastic' Gurunath Meiyappan (the disgraced team principal) had robbed the integrity of the Chennai franchise and pushed them into abyss for two years as their fans patiently awaited their return. But, on 27th May, the MS Dhoni-led brigade repaid the faith of their fans and restored their lost pride by clinching their record-tying third IPL title at the Wankhede stadum. BCCI Opting to field first, Chennai saw their opponents posting a competitive total of 178 runs. The likes of Kane Williamson (47) and Yusuf Pathan (45*) were pivotal in their innings which was fairly slow early on. In reply, Chennai were bolstered by the batting masterclass of Shane Watson whose unbeaten 57-ball 117 ensured they reached the target with eight wickets and nine balls to spare. Despite struggling early in the innings and battling hamstring injury, Watson made the game his own on the back of 11 fours and eight sixes while scoring at a blistering strike-rate of over 205. Suresh Raina (32) and Ambati Rayudu (16*) also chipped in as Chennai stunned Hyderabad before running away with the title. #WhistlePodu for the #SuperChampions! pic.twitter.com/C31h1u2yoh — Chennai Super Kings (@ChennaiIPL) May 27, 2018 Everywhere we go! 23. Researchers at cybersecurity firm F-Secure have designed a device that can pull data off of hotel key cards and essentially create a master key for an entire hotel. All you need is an old key card, even an expired one from five years ago. The data from that card can be scanned to a handheld device, which is used to unlock any room in the hotel. According to the researchers, whose claims were earlier reported on by Gizmodo, the software running on those keys, called Vision, has a vulnerability that allows criminals to create master keys and open any door in the facility. © F-Secure / YouTube Tomi Tuominen and Timo Hirvonen from F-Secure began investigating the vulnerability 15 years ago after a laptop belonging to one of their colleagues mysteriously went missing from a hotel room. Because there was no sign of forced entry and no unauthorized access recorded in the entry logs, nothing much was done. “The hack consists of three steps,” Mr Tuominen explains to The Independent. “Firstly, get access to a key card, it doesn't matter which. Secondly, use a relatively-cheap piece of hardware, combined with our custom software, to read the card and search for the master key code. © F-Secure “Thirdly, write the master key onto the keycard, or any other key card, to gain access to any room in the facility.” With a $300 Proxmark RFID card reading and writing tool, any expired keycard pulled from the trash of a target hotel, and a set of cryptographic tricks developed over close to 15 years of on-and-off analysis of the codes Vingcard electronically writes to its keycards, they found a method to vastly narrow down a hotel's possible master key code. Tomi said F-Secure doesn't believe anyone is currently using this exact exploit in the wild, which should help all you frequent travellers breathe a sigh of relief. Still, that doesn't mean there aren't similar vulnerabilities in electronic key card systems. After all, F-Secure's odyssey to discover this vulnerability was kicked off after one of its researchers experienced a similar exploit firsthand. At the Infiltrate conference in Miami later this week, Tuominen and Hirvonen plan to present a technique they've found to not simply clone the keycard RFID codes used by Vanguard's Vision locks but to create a master key that can open any room in a hotel.
