  1. Arguably one of the biggest names in international cricket, Shane Warne was the golden boy for Australia in a generation that dictated terms in the gentleman's game. In an international career that spanned over almost 14 years, Warne, on the back of envious bowling records, established himself as one of the greatest spinners to have ever graced the game of cricket. By the time he retired in 2006, Warne had 17,995 runs and 708 wickets in Tests alongside 7,541 runs and 293 wickets in ODI cricket. While his feats surely give a glimpse of his cricketing success, Warne's wizardry with the ball is perhaps best showcased in the 'ball of the century' he bowled on 4th June, 1993 to England's Mike Gatting. #OnThisDay in 1993, a 23-year-old Shane Warne delivered 'The Ball of the Century' pic.twitter.com/vcGkv885yG â ICC (@ICC) June 3, 2020 Warne had only played 11 Tests and one ODI when he was included in the Australian line-up for the Ashes against England for the Manchester Test. While others would have been a bit nervous, Warne, having taken 33 wickets in 12 international matches, probably took it as a challenge to prove his mettle early in his career. Introduced into the attack, after his team was bowled out for 289 runs in the first innings, Warne was facing Gatting, a renowned player against spin-bowling, at the other end. While many had backed experienced Gatting to give young Warne a tough time, the Australian turned the tables on the veteran in style. One heck of a delivery... Shane Warne, you beauty.... â Ashwani (@ImashwaniKsingh) June 4, 2020 Bowling his maiden delivery in the famed Ashes, a 23-year-old Warne took his famous slow-walk, as part of his run-up, towards the crease and used his wind-up action to deliver a masterpiece. The leg-break delivery saw the ball, moving through the air, beginning to drift to the right, eventually pitching several inches outside the line of leg-stump. Taking note of the trajectory, Gatting, as an experienced player of spin-bowling, pushed his leg forward to get to the pitch of the ball to nullify the danger. But, to Gatting and everyone's surprise, the ball, despite pitching outside leg, spun back in (almost two-and-a-half feet), cuffing off sharply to beat the batsman and clipping the top of the off-stump. The sharp turn and bounce extracted by Warne didn't just leave Gatting surprised and bemused, but also saw the unbelievable delivery labelled as the 'ball of the century'. The dismissal of Gatting opened the floodgates for Australia as Warne claimed three more scalps as England were bowled out for 210. Sensing Warne's success, captain Allan Border declared Australia's second innings at 432/5. And, as expected, Warne took four more wickets to help Aussies seal a 179-run win and go 1-0 up in the six-match series. While Australia won the game, Warne etched his name in the history books for his legendary delivery which didn't just put him on the cricketing map, but also earned him the reputation of the man who saved the dying art of leg-spin in international cricket. Warne went on to establish himself as one of the greatest spinners of all-time, taking wickets and shattering records at will. And, while he might have retired from the game, Warne's legends, like the 'miracle ball', continue to live on. View the full article
  2. The world of cricket isn't alienated to fast-bowling talents capturing the imagination of fans with their unmatched skills on the international circuit. While Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner and Ian Bishop dominated the fast-bowling circuit in the 70s and 80s, the 90s saw Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose carrying on the legacy for the West Indies. But, the late 90s saw a shift in the fast-bowling paradigm. For probably the first time, international cricket saw the emergence of two non-West Indian bowlers dominating the fast-bowling charts. Brett Lee and Shoaib Akhtar made the fast bowling their own little playground, hurting the opposition with intimidating run-ups, sheer pace and impeccable. While both the pacers excelled as exponents of extreme speed over a decade, Lee, owing to his flashy smile, was regarded as the righteous one as opposed to Akhtar's reputation as the bad boy of cricket. Despite emerging on the international circuit with great, the Pakistani bowler, sadly, could only end his career as an 'if only' or 'could've been' cricketer. © Reuters It was during his tenure as ICC president that Akhtar's case of ball chucking came to the fore. Despite his fellow ICC members suggesting strict action against the Pakistani speedster, Dalmiya took a stand and supported Akhtar in the times of great crisis in his career. The incident was recently disclosed by a former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) president. Lt General (retd) Tauqir Zia, who headed PCB from 1999 to 2003, revealed how Dalmiya saved Akhtar's career. "Jagmohan, who had been president of the ICC and was an influential voice, supported us a lot in the Shoaib Akhtar bowling action case. He took a stand for us despite the ICC members insisting that Akhtar's bowling action was illegal," Zia told PTI. "But due to the stance taken by Dalmiya and myself, the ICC eventually conceded that Akhtar had a medical flaw in his bowling arm since birth which gave him hyper elbow extension and he was allowed to play on," he added. 3. This is a 27-year-old story where two titans of the technology world were competing with each other for the dominant personal computer spot. In August of 1997, Bill Gates saved Apple, which at the time was on the brink of bankruptcy. While most companies would let their rivals die out, this is the story of when two companies decided to help each other out instead of letting one fold. © Pinterest âBill, thank you. The worldâs a better place,â Jobs told Gates when Microsoft invested $150 million in Apple and offered free access to use Microsoft Office on Mac personal computers. This historic move saved Apple from going down under and in exchange, Apple dropped their lawsuit against Microsoft, claiming the company copied their operating system. 20 years ago this week, Steve Jobs was on the cover of @TIME, thanking @BillGates for "saving Apple." pic.twitter.com/AhUnLnOZ8t â Codecademy (@Codecademy) August 24, 2017However, 10 years later, the two CEOs met on-stage at the D5 tech conference and relived the memory of coming together. In the interview, Jobs said "Apple was in very serious trouble,â and what was really clear was that "if the game was a zero-sum game where for Apple to win, Microsoft had to lose, then Apple was going to lose.â âThere were too many people at Apple and in the Apple ecosystem playing [that] game,â he explained. âAnd it was clear that you didnât have to play that game because Apple wasnât going to beat Microsoft.â © Pinterest âTo me, it was pretty essential to break that paradigm,â Jobs said. âAnd it was also important that you know, Microsoft was the biggest software developer outside of Apple, developing for the Mac. So it was just crazy what was happening at that time. And Apple was very weak and so I called Bill up and we tried to patch things up.â For Microsoft, it was a new business opportunity as well as a way to get Apple back on its feet. While Gates did end up with 18.2 million Apple shares, but these were non-voting shares as Microsoft was their fiercest rival. Eventually, Gates sold all of Apple shares in 2003, however as of 2019, those shares would have been worth $40-50 billion. âThatâs worked out very well,â said Gates at the D5 tech conference. âIn fact, every couple years or so, thereâs been something new that weâve been able to do on the Mac and itâs been a great business for us.â Well, many thought that this tech mythic story wasnât true until the two CEOs met for an interview together. Thereâs no doubt it is a great story about the two rivals. It proves eliminating competition isnât the only way to win and in turn, working together helped both companies to become the richest organisations in the world. What makes this story extraordinary is the fact that Bill Gates at the time was a cut-throat businessman and had a reputation for not being apologetic. Today, Bill Gates is known for his generosity and philanthropy, but he was a very different person in 1997 who chose to save his rival rather than see it sink. View the full article
  4. Coronavirus is still spreading at a rapid pace with more and more new cases popping up every day. The outbreak is affecting our lives in more ways than one. From transport and technology to healthcare, every major sector has taken a hit, causing problems everywhere. One of the biggest and probably the most crucial issues has been the lack of medical supplies to treat the patients. We recently came across a story like this in which a hospital in Italy was unable to provide the medical aid required to treat its patients. © 3D Printing Media Network When you have hundreds of cases showing up on your doorstep, you got to make sure that you have enough resources and medical aid to take them in and help them fight through this. One of the only ways to save lives at this point is to have as many 'resuscitation' machines as possible. For those of you who don't know, 'resuscitation' ('reanimation' in Italian) machine is a part of the equipment found in an intensive care unit that used to cure a patient's inability to breathe properly. These aren't the kinds of machines that are made to treat a lot of patients at a given time, hence they come with a limited supply of valves that are used to treat the patients. One of the hospitals in Brescia, one of the hardest-hit regions for coronavirus infections, urgently needed valves for an ICU device. However, there was a supply-demand gap that couldn't be filled on time. © 3D Printing Media Network As noted by the folks over at the 3D printing Network Media, running out of the valves would have been dramatic and some people may have lost their lives. So the hospital started coordinating with a bunch of companies, trying to figure out a way to 3D print them. A company called Isinnova showed up to the hospital with a 3D printer and produced the required valves in just a few hours. Who would've thought that 3D printers can come in handy at such an occasion, right? © Reuters The valves are now actively being 3D printed in huge numbers to curb the shortage of supply. This is one of those cases which makes us feel a little positive about the whole situation which otherwise seems to be getting out of hands by each passing day. We hope all of you reading this story are safely isolated at homes, away from crowded locations. It's only a matter of time until we hear some news about a vaccine to contain the spread. Stay safe, everyone. Source: 3D Printing Media Network View the full article
  5. Leonardo DiCaprio saves someone from drowning, yet again, but at least he himself survives this time. Looking at you, Rose, there was enough for both of you! While the Titanic argument is honestly never ending, we can just focus on Leo becoming a real-life hero for someone. Basically, a man had toppled off a cruise ship in the Caribbean, but lucky for him, none other than Leo was vacationing near St. Barts with his girlfriend, Camila Morrone, and friends over the New Year's Eve. The incident took place on December 30th and the captain of Leo's boat alerted him about the situation. A source said, "Leo and his friends and their boat captain decided to join the search and their efforts resulted in helping save a man's life." Turns out Leo's search party was the only one actually searching for the poor guy and his chances of survival were basically zero. The source added, "The captain put the man's chances of survival at one in a billion â like winning the lottery twice. They were the only responders, and his only chance of survival, despite being hours away. The âman overboardâ was minutes from drowning when he was found." Reportedly, the guy was just minutes away from drowning but Leo and party reached him just in time. The source added, "He thought he was dreaming after being rescued by one of the worldâs most famous faces." To be honest, I would pass out if I saw Leo saving my life. The entire thing, obviously, resulted in a lot of Titanic jokes, it just had to happen. It came in handy. 6. The Apple Watch has already been responsible for saving countless lives and a new story emerged yesterday where a man whose heart rhythm disorder was detected by the smartwatch. Jorge Freire Jr. was returning home when his Apple Watch notified him about his heart rhythm disorder which can cause heart failure, stroke or even death. © Unsplash/Daniel Korpai The man shared his story on Facebook and detailed that his Apple Watch warned him about his heart rate that was above 140 BPM for 10 minutes. He checked his heart rate via the dedicated app on the Apple Watch and discovered it was beating at 170 BPM. âI went home and laid down for half an hour to see if my heartbeat would go back to normal. It stabilized at 160 BPM, I was having tachycardia. I ran to the ER. When I showed my heartbeat on the Watch to hospital staff, they immediately sent me in to be checked. My blood pressure was super high and I was indeed having tachycardia. That little watch was 100% correctâ he said. © Twitter/Verge Tachycardia is a heart rhythm disorder where the heart beats faster than it should when resting. According to WebMD âTachycardia is a condition that makes your heartbeat more than 100 times per minute. There are three types of it: Supraventricular. This happens when the electrical signals in the organ's upper chambers misfire and cause the heart rate to speed up. It beats so fast that it can't fill with blood before it contracts.â Freire was able to treat his heart condition with medication and concluded âI can say the Apple Watch saved me. I wasnât feeling a thing and couldâve spent hours with that tachycardia, which couldâve resulted in you know whatâ¦â View the full article
  7. So many animals lose their lives every day for meat and it's actually such a cruel practice. No, we're not trying to spread some vegan agenda, but this one particular animal pleading to be spared is too heartbreaking. Reportedly, a cow in China literally begged to be spared from being slaughtered by kneeling down in front of the butcher with tears in its eyes. To make matters worse, the cow was also pregnant. The incident happened in Shantou in Guangdong Province of China and even though it's very sad how the cow had to beg to stay alive, the entire thing at least has a happy ending. An insider named Lin Wangbo told Chinese news outlet The Paper, according to a translation provided by Daily Mail, that "After it arrived at the slaughterhouse and when the butcher tried to drag it off the truck and into the house to be butchered, it knelt and kept crying." © YouTube In the end, the people of China came to the cow's rescue. After the video of the entire thing was uploaded on Chinese social media platforms, it went viral and people came together to save the poor cow. Reportedly, everyone managed to collect 24,950 yuan - â¹2.5 lakh - to buy the cow and was released at a local Buddhist temple where it was happily adopted. Another 4,000 yuan - â¹41,000 - were also raised to give to the temple to cover all the expenses. © YouTube See, great things can be achieved when people work together. I'm just glad the cow is alive and at a better place where it will hopefully receive the love and care it needs. View the full article
  8. A lot of places across the globe saw massive uncontrollable wildfires. These wildfires also made a lot of people evacuate their houses and caused a lot of destruction to the wildlife and eventually, death of animals. In the Australia wildfire that is still not under control, hundreds of koalas died and hundreds are still in danger, nearing death every day. Volunteers, along with the fire department of the affected places, tried to save as many wildlife and animals as possible. Recently among other surfaced videos on the internet from the wildfires, this one caught everyone's attention. IFS Susanta Nanda took to her Twitter to share a video of a baby bear that was rescued from the fire and refused to leave the person behind who saved him. The rescuer is seen loosening the baby bear's grip but the bear runs back to him. The video is heartwarming and shows how the wildfires have disturbed the wildlife. The volunteers are also lauded by the netizens on the internet for their kindness and for making heroic efforts. View the full article
  9. The old Nokia phones, as we all know, are a tough nut to crack. You may have heard a lot of stories about a Nokia feature phone saving people's lives by stopping a bullet. It's a testament to how durable those really are, which is something we simply can't expect from a modern-day smartphone. However, a recent incident proved that not all modern-day phones are fragile. Last week, a Google Pixel 3 XL smartphone saved a man's life by stopping a bullet from hitting him. Impressive, isn't it? Our photographer was shot by a rubber bullet on Monday in the battlefield of #polyu #hongkong The #pixel3 phone stopped the bullet and was destroyed. He didn't get hurt. Surprised it can still be turned on. @madebygoogle @googlepixels @Claudibus pic.twitter.com/Gtz0jFvHXg — Studio Incendo (@studioincendo) November 19, 2019 The incident happened in Hong Kong and the victim was one of the photographers covering a protest near the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The photo studio then sent out a tweet saying that one of their photographers was shot and got saved by the phone. It's, however, worth pointing out that the bullet in question here isn't a regular bullet from a lethal firearm. It was a rubber bullet, which is essentially a less-lethal alternative to a normal metal bullet. But the phone still saved the man's life because even rubber bullets can sometimes kill people or permanently disable them. Yes, the shot wasn't as lethal as it could've been, but the phone was able to stop the projectile and prevented any kind of mishap from happening. © Twitter/ @studioincendo As you can see from the images, the bullet hit the bottom right corner of the phone. The impact was obviously strong enough to completely shatter the glass on both sides. But we're surprised to see that the phone is still turning on. The display is clearly damaged and the back glass is shattered to a point that it's not safe to use, but the phone still turned on, which goes on to show how durable it is. We live in a world where smartphones and other mobile devices are getting more and more fragile. So, it's definitely a relief to see at least a few of them still holding strong. View the full article
  10. As far as American pop-culture icons go, Mickey Mouse is, in a word… indestructible. The rotund rodent might have taken a back seat for the company in recent years, but that's just a drop in the ocean for one of the world's most recognisable cartoon characters. Ever since his debut in 1928's Steamboat Willie, Mickey has found himself in everything from countless mountains of merchandise to theme parks, video games and even bizarre war propaganda during World War 2. Today is the Big Mouse's birthday, a time honoured tradition at Disney that's been celebrated for several years now. Despite this massive legacy, perhaps his most enduring contribution to the world of entertainment took place far before Disney became a household name. This is the story of a visionary animator, an uncompromising film studio, a rabbit and of course, a very specific mouse. 1. Walt Disney Gets Pissed Like every good story in Hollywood, this one starts with someone screwing over someone else. Back in the mid-1920s, animator Walt Disney and his older brother Roy had successfully set up the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. Initially working with producers Winkler Pictures, the Disneys tasted initial success with Alice Comedies, before Universal Studios joined in and asked Disney to make a new show. This project then became Oswald The Lucky Rabbit. via Gfycat While Disney did not earn much from Oswald, his character was an instant hit upon release, bolstering the young animator to approach the bigwigs at Universal. Confident that he had the upper hand due to his cartoon's popularity, Walt Disney walked right in and asked the executives for a budget raise. Unsurprising by Hollywood executive standards, Disney was in for a rude shock. Not only was his request binned, he was told that Winkler Pictures CEO, Charles Mintz, had poached away several members of Disney's animation team. Universal had the clout to do this because they retained the rights to use Oswald, and to add further insult to injury, told Walt that he could stay on the project if he took a 20 percent pay cut. via GIPHY There are no two ways about it - Walt Disney was absolutely furious. 2. Of Man & Mouse Disney's response to this well-planned backstabbing was to do two things. First, he vowed to never settle for less than complete ownership of his characters. Secondly, he sought out one of his oldest friends - animator Ub Iwerks. Both men had sailed the rough seas of early-era animation together, and Iwerks was the only one that Disney could rely on at the time. Their first efforts at making a new character were good, but not quite enough for Disney. During these manic, late-night brainstorming sessions, both artists came up with several designs, some of which were saved for later projects. Caption: Horace Horsecollar & Clarabelle Cow - two early creations of Iwerks' and Disney's, 1931. One day, while travelling on a train headed to California, inspiration struck Walt. He produced a few simple drawings and along with Iwerks, carried out a series of anatomical adjustments to the original Oswald formula - after shortening the ears, lengthening his nose and stuffing him up a little, the duo stepped back and checked out their work - the rabbit was now a mouse. © Disney This startling new creation was initially named Mortimer, much to Walt's wife's distaste. She then suggested the name we've all come to know and love - Mickey. 3. Mickey's Rise To The Top Fresh off the illustration table, Mickey Mouse certainly had a lot to prove. Disney's first Mickey shot, 1928's Plane Crazy wasn't the runaway hit they were hoping for. Even the second film, The Gallopin' Gaucho, failed to pick up distributors. Like several things in life however, third time's the charm. Steamboat Willie is more than just Mickey's public debut. Back in the 1920s, the silent film era was just beginning to be influenced by the advent of synchronised sound, and on watching Alan Crosland's The Jazz Singer, Walt became committed to becoming a pioneer with this revolutionary new technology. © The Jazz Singer's theatrical poster, 1927. Naturally, some doubt accompanied the process, as few thought that a sound cartoon would seem believable enough. A test audience consisting of Disney employees and their families was set up, with live sound being produced in the very same room. Whistles were blown. Pots and pans were struck in timing with the slapstick actions of the characters, while Walt himself provided the grunts, squeaks and other unintelligible voices required. This was clearly a man absolutely devoted to his work, and who believed in it like no one else. In one of his earlier interviews, Walt said, “The effect on our little audience was nothing less than electric. They responded almost instinctively to this union of sound and motion. I thought they were kidding me. So they put me in the audience and ran the action again. It was terrible, but it was wonderful! And it was something new.” The film was picked up for distribution and ran for two weeks - for which Disney was paid $1,000, or roughly $15,000 in today's money. Cartoons at the time were played before main shows at the cinemas - Steamboat Willie happened to be the cartoon of independent feature film, Gang War. Steamboat Willie is perhaps one of the most important pieces of visual art ever made, while Gang War is all but forgotten today. The cartoon's success brought Disney substantial fame, critical reviews and made the mouse a much-beloved cartoon icon. Soon, Disney set his sights on the next great masterstroke of his career - marketing. Walt quickly started up a line of Mickey merchandise, and within two years the Mickey Mouse Club, a fan club for children, was up and running. © Disney sold his Mickey plush dolls in the form of 35-cent sewing kits, so that even poor children could own one. Through the decades that followed, Mickey has been a pretty upstanding, honest and generally likeable character (unlike his famous contemporary, Donald Duck). He's done everything from edutainment shows for toddlers, obtain the powers of a mighty wizard, fought against Nazis and even lost his girlfriend Minnie to a long chain of tough guys - but he always finds a way, usually through cleverness and sheer determination, to save the day. © Walt Disney's last photo taken at Disneyland. Sounds a lot like an old animator we knew. Happy birthday, Mickey Mouse! View the full article
  11. With the ICC Men's T20 World Cup now less than a year away, the Indian cricket team is in the middle of a testing period during which younger/inexperienced talent have the opportunity to prove their mettle and fix themselves a spot in the roster. Ever since the T20I series against Quinton de Kock's South African team, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been given the duty of examining callow cricketers like Washington Sundar, Navdeep Saini and Khaleel Ahmed before the final squad for the World Cup Down Under is set. One of the leading prospects during the three match T20I series against Mahmudullah Riyad's Bangladesh team was the 26-year-old Shivam Dube. The all-rounder who is an above-average First-Class and List A player, struggled to perform on either sides of the pitch for the first two games. #ShivamDube came back to struck crucial blows to dent #Bangladesh's chances. In the second match as well, the Mumbai-born failed to scalp a single wicket and gave up 12 runs in two overs in India's win. As the third and final match of the series began, even the commentators were a bit sceptical of Dube's selection and were wondering why interim skipper Rohit Sharma continued to give Dube opportunity after opportunity. There was good backing from my captain - shivam dube pic.twitter.com/yYRqnBbi3y — Jay Jadhav (@JayJadhav2108) November 10, 2019 Dube's first spell in the series decider also started out on a bad note as Bangladesh batsman, Mohammad Naim put pressure on him with a boundary on the first ball. After struggling with pace and placement on the pitch for the first couple of overs, the ambidextrous made a massive comeback when his yorker stunned in-form hitter Naim and struck the middle stump for his second and arguably the most important wicket of the night. Shivam Dube shows serious character. What a Yorker and what a huge wicket! — Joy Bhattacharjya (@joybhattacharj) November 10, 2019 “He needs just one ball to get that flow and this was it,” commentator Harsha Bhogle said during the game. The cricketer's oversimplified bowling was probably what was required on a due-heavy pitch at the VCA Stadium and maybe, just maybe, Shivam Dube has saved face and kept his dream of representing India at the ICC T20 World Cup from crumbling. The man driving the car was unconscious after the car crash, his Apple Watch sent a call for help. The police have not made the survivor's details public but the official Twitter handle of Surrey Police tweeted about the incident. 13. Apple Watch has now become one of the most essential gadgets to own, thanks to its various health tracking features. It has been responsible for saving lives in the past too and recently, a feature that was introduced on the Apple Watch Series 4 saved a man's life this time around. Apple introduced the “fall detection” feature that alerts emergency services if a user takes a hard fall and does not get up after a minute. © Apple After the first minute, the watch will buzz and sound an alarm. It will then ask if you are fine or need any assistance. If the user is unable to respond in 30 seconds, it will call emergency services automatically and also sound an alarm to notify people who are nearby. The Apple Watch will also send the location of the user to the emergency services so that it is easier for them to be located. This feature has been responsible in the past for saving a man's life after he fell during a biking accident. Now the same feature has saved a man's life who's from New Jersey and had suffered a fall from a cliff while out for a hike. © Pinterest(For representation purposes only) News12 New Jersey reported that the man was hiking in Hartshorne Woods Park. While hiking, he fell from a very steep cliff but did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. The report said, “Prudenciano fell into the river and landed on a rock. He suffered three fractures in his back, scratches and thorns that are still lodged in his foot.” “I was screaming that I'm going to die because I really felt I was going to die,” Prudenciano said. “There was no way out of this for me. I literally said my last goodbyes.” He was miraculously saved, thanks to his Apple Watch as it detected the hard fall and called 911. This feature only works on the Lte variant of the Apple Watch but does not require a carrier plan to dial emergency services. Source: News12 New Jersey
  14. There's a reason why a dog is a man or a woman's best friend. They're the actual healers we need in our lives and if times are not so good for us, they know how to make us feel better for sure. Don't believe me? Well, Hank the dog certainly did something extraordinary for his owner and the Twitter user recently shared his story with the internet , and it truly melted our hearts. This story surely teaches us to be patient with our pets, as they might do things to annoy us but will also do heroic things to compensate for their bad behaviour. So, we really shouldn't be too quick to punish them. © Twitter So, if you have a dog and he or she is up to some mischief, always resign to the fact that they will act intelligently when they really need to, if they have to save your life. Dogs are quite clairvoyant like that. Ever noticed, if you're sad or low, they usually come sit next to you, and you feel better? That's because they figure you're sad and they come to cheer you up, kinda like saving your life, isn't it? Well, Hank actually did save his owners' life, even after getting a scolding. So, if you have a dog, give them all the love they deserve and yes, make sure you have some fire-fighting apparatus at home, always. People online really loved the story and vouched for more show-chewing days for Hank!
  15. Apple has some useful apps on the iPhone and one of them was responsible for saving a young girl's life. 17-year-old Macy Smith was coming home late and her mother could not get through to her. The mother suspected that something was wrong and was able to track down her daughter using the 'Find My Friends' app. Ms Smith was trapped in a wrecked car at the bottom of an embankment and it would have been impossible to trace her if it weren't for Apple's app and the mother's quick thinking. © Apple The teenager later wrote on a Facebook post: “I hydroplaned at 4:00 pm and ran in between 2 trees down an embankment, flipped my car 3 times, and landed in my back seat with my arm pinned in between the car and the ground.” She could not reach for her iPhone and respond to her mother's calls. The mother then traced her daughter's location using the app and the family drove to the location of the accident. They found her trapped in the vehicle and were able to recover her. © Apple “The whole time I knew they were going to show up and I'm so thankful for my family and we're such a tight family that I knew that I wasn't going to be there the whole night without them looking for me,” Ms Smith told a local TV station. Find My Friends app is a very useful application that lets users share their location with friends and family. The feature needs to be activated manually however this incident just proved that it is a very useful feature that can end up saving your life. You can add the feature by adding your family members' iCloud accounts and share the location data when necessary. Ms Smith is now urging other teenagers to enable this feature on their iPhones. 16. Yesterday, a little boy from Mizoram went viral for his simple act of kindness. In case you didn't know, the boy was cycling when he accidentally ran over his neighbour's chicken. He was so scared for the injured chicken that he rushed it to the nearest hospital and asked for help with whatever money he had. His simple act of kindness may not be something extraordinary, but the little kid is definitely a hero in his own right and his actions have taught us adults a huge lesson on humanity. The kid has been identified as 6-year-old Derek C Lalchhanhima from Sairang. In fact, Derek is now his school's hero too and was recently rewarded for his sweet gesture. Here's Derek proudly holding his 'Word of Appreciation' certificate, which he received at his School St. Pio, Sairang today. Reportedly, Derek came home with the chick that he had accidentally killed and did not understand that the chick is dead. He begged his parents, but when his parents told him to go himself, he did exactly that with whatever money he had i.e. Rs 10. The nurse couldn't stop from gushing over the little kid's innocence. Derek's innocent gesture has won everyone's heart and we hope more and more people can learn from this cute little 6-year-old.

He rushed out to see that a car had toppled and had pinned a man underneath, who was screaming for help. He saw that four other men were unsuccessfully attempting to move the vehicle and he thought to himself that there was never going to be a better time than that moment where he could use his strength to save a life. The Jeep vehicle weighed 2 tonnes and Ryan knew that he could move it enough to rescue the man. He jumped right in and moved the vehicle enough to remove the victim from underneath. The injured man was rushed to the hospital and was admitted with internal bleeding. The nurses said that had Ryan been not present there at that moment, the man would have not lived. Reacting to the whole scenario, Ryan gave a statement to the local news saying, "I knew if I could swing the vehicle in a certain direction I could free him from that pole. 18. Seems like Apple was able to save yet another life, thanks to its heart rate sensor as it was able to detect unusual activity in a man's pulse rate. The Apple Watch has been known to be able to save lives via features that are in-built in the smartwatch. In this particular case, the man was diagnosed with tachycardia. © YouTube The man was Science Friday radio host Ira Flatow's brother and the incident was tweeted by him saying “saved by his Apple Watch,” The Apple Watch alerted him to a rapid heartbeat and suggested that he should visit a hospital. My brother was saved by his Apple Watch. After he felt a rapid heart beat >200 bpm, his watch told him to “go to the hospital.” He did and his tachycardia was diagnosed. — Ira Flatow (@iraflatow) March 7, 2019 Tachycardia is a condition when the heart rate exceeds the normal resting rate. Generally, if the resting heart rate is above 10 beats per minute, the condition is considered "tachycardia". Flatlow continued to say that his brother commented on the accuracy of his Apple Watch “and BTW, during the 15 hours I was at the hospital hooked up to the monitors, my the monitors never disagreed with my watch's reading. I checked MANY times.” © MensXP It's not the first time where the Apple Watch was able to save someone's life. 20. The Apple Watch Series 4 comes with an ECG function that was recently released in the U.S. Since it became available for about a month, the feature is already proving to be a useful one. It was able to detect atrial fibrillation with the new feature and saved a man's life in Nashua, New Hampshire. Barry Maden originally bought the Apple Watch to “keep a closer eye on his health after suffering a brain injury.” He bought the Apple Watch for it's Fall Detection feature. “He originally got it because they have a new fall risk app where, if he were to fall and I'm not nearby, the fall sensor will sense that he fell and call 911,” said his wife, Tara Maden. © MensXP_Akshay Bhalla He originally thought he was suffering from anxiety due to travelling for the holidays. However, his Apple Watch alerted him that his heart appeared to be in A-fib. It isn't clear if Maden used the ECG app right away to detect the A-fib. However, it was enough for him to double check if he was suffering from something serious. He soon thereafter took himself to the emergency room. © Apple At the hospital, doctors performed their own tests using a more advanced ECG device to verify the Apple Watch's discovery. It was soon discovered that Maden's “heart was essentially stopped and restarted by doctors.” The Apple Watch has been found to save lives previously and recently saved a woman from drowning in water as her car flipped over. The movie is based on the tragic Uttarakhand floods of 2013 and has a backdrop of an inter-faith love story. While the reactions to the movie have been mixed in terms of its storyline and the plot, the one thing that everyone agrees upon is the fact that Sara Ali Khan is here to stay and showed her prowess as a natural actor in 'Kedarnath'. 23. Apple Watch Series 4 was announced last month and it brings in a load of new health-centric features. Previously, the Apple Watch has been successful in detecting heart diseases, consistent high/low blood pressure, as well as abnormal heart behaviour. Now, the new watch features fall detection that uses a similar mechanism that tracks complex forms of motion like swimming. The new fall detection alerts emergency contacts saved in your iPhone, in case you meet with a hard fall. This has been achieved by incorporating more powerful and well-calibrated accelerometer and gyroscope. © CultOfMac According to Swedish publication Aftonbladet, 34-year old Gustavo Rodriguez, an Apple Watch Series 4 user is the first person to be saved by the wearable. The watch detected that he had a fall due to severe back pain. The watch offered to call up the Swedish emergency services, even when his phone was in the other room. The report states that Gustavo's wrist pounded and asked: “Do you want to call 112?”. “My Apple Watch had known the case and wondered if it would call an emergency call". The interesting thing here isn't just that the Watch recognized accurately what was going on and responded appropriately. © Aftonbladet Apple has gathered data from people wearing Apple Watches (running customized software) in a movement disorder clinic, assisted living facilities, and friends and family of Apple employees. More than 2,500 people and 250,000 days of data were analyzed to program the system for fall detection. “We learned that with falls, there's this repeatable motion pattern that happens,” Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating officer, said during the company's keynote in September when announcing the feature. “For example, when you trip, your body will naturally pitch forward, and your arms will go out involuntarily to brace yourself. However, if you slip, there's a natural upward motion of the arms.” © Apple The new Apple Watch now features a 30 per cent larger display and it now runs to the edges rather than floats in a black bezel. It is powered by a new S4 chipset that Apple claims is two times faster. Apple has also added a new feature that can monitor your Electrocardiography Readings or generally called ECG. Unfortunately, the ECG feature required medical approval from local authorities and hence is available only in the USA right now. But the addition of these health features has turned the Apple Watch into a much more capable gadget that is always connected via LTE and acts as a personal health / medical device. 24. An Air India flight suffered multiple system failure, had almost no fuel and faced severe weather conditions while trying to land at the John F Kennedy Airport in New York. The pilot managed to save the life of 370 passengers on board by manually landing the plane on the runway. © Air India Air India 101 was flying direct from New Delhi to New York and faced one of the worst situations any pilot would never want to face in their career. The plane experienced multiple system failure and was extremely low on fuel. The pilot immediately reported the situation to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) as the flight also witnessed other failures such as the malfunctioning of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) receivers. Despite all the problems, the pilot managed to land the plane at a different airport in Newark. The landing instrument that malfunctioned allows a pilot to approach a runway blindly. © Star Alliance According to reports, the B777 aircraft has flown over 36,985 hours and has been in service for almost 9 years. While the incident was transpiring, there was panic among passengers as the aircraft managed to land. A pilot can fly an aircraft without the onboard navigation system, however, the accuracy often suffers. Today, most Airports in the world have different Required Navigation Performance (RNP) parameters. Airports have different separation parameters between aircraft which are in turn defined by the RNP. As the LNAV and VNAV were malfunctioning on the Air India flight, it would have been difficult for the pilot to follow the separation indicated by ATC.
