The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season kicks out on March 26 and concludes on May 29. The season will include 74 matches, with two new teams – the Lucknow Super Giants and the Gujarat Titans – making their IPL debuts. The competition will also include a return to the group system, with 10 teams divided into five groups. A number of former English cricketers have been critical of the IPL in recent months, particularly in light of the team's devastating setbacks in the Ashes series in Australia, when England went 0-4 in the five-match series. Former England captains Mike Atherton and David Gower cited the IPL as a big factor in the team's failure in Australia. Ravichandran Ashwin, an Indian off-spinner, addressed the statements on his YouTube channel, referring to a tweet from an English journalist who stated that IPL 2022 will take up "one-sixth" of the year. When it comes to other nations, Ashwin wonders what the downsides of the two-week earlier start are. They (international teams) would have already planned their overseas schedules. During the IPL, for example, England and Australia play a few games against other countries. Amid the IPL timeframe, even Sri Lanka has just a few international matches. Mike Atherton is a great journalist with a top brain. He is however a strong defender of the establishment. Always worrying about IPL overreach, now this. I still like him, but am glad to have read this article. — Manish Punish (@manish_punish) January 14, 2022 The Rajasthan Royals player added that South Africa, Australia, England, and New Zealand, on the other hand, plan their international games around IPL matchups. New Zealand will not be playing any international matches during the IPL this year. Lawrence Booth (English journalist), who had shared a tweet about how the IPL in its new format will be using up to 2 months of international players’ annual time, which is about 1/6th of the entire year. To counter this argument, Ashwin uses the example of the English Premier League which happens in the UK and takes up to six months to finish. View this post on Instagram The increase in the league’s timings also means that the players will have longer breaks between matches and only one or two games each week. Of course, cricket's ability to reach that level will always be a big question mark. However, the IPL as competition has the ability to propel cricket to that level. And all cricket fans, nations, and stakeholders are aware of this. View the full article
