  10. If you can stay away from a smartphone, TV or any other device that has a screen, for 24 hours, a company will pay you $2,400 or Rs 1,73,872. Reviews.org, a company that tests products and home services is holding a challenge where you will need to do a digital detox for 24 hours. The challenge is quite simple though, you need to survive an entire day without interacting with something that has a screen. © unsplash "If you've got the desire to ditch your devices for a day but still need to get paid, this is the perfect opportunity for you," the company said on its website. Anyone can apply and in order to get started the company asks a few questions that need answers: "Have you always wanted to win reality competitions like American Ninja Warrior, but you've been too busy trying to beat Mario Kart and Mortal Kombat instead?" Reviews.org asks potential applicants. ”Do you know a little too much about your old acquaintances from social media?” The company is looking for candidates who are “definitely into tech” up for the challenge. The challenge is not only about staying away from your phone for an entire day; it’s a bit more involved than you think. © unsplash If you plan to apply for the challenge, not only do you have to stay away from your phone, you will also need to stay away from TVs, gaming, computers, smartwatches and even smart speakers. People who plan to be a part of the challenge will receive safes to store their electronics for 24 hours and Amazon gift cards to put together a tech-free “survival kit.” In the survival kit, you will get a typewriter to replace computers, writing paper to replace text messages and paints and brushes for painting instead of taking selfies with your smartphone. Participants will have to review the survival kit and give feedback on the experience after completing the 24 hours. To get started, you will have to divulge a bit of personal information and a brief answer on why you are the right candidate for the challenge. Applications are open until March 26 and the winners will be announced on the website’s official YouTube page on March 29. View the full article

  13. Laptops generally have one screen for the user but today, a company called Expanscape has created a laptop that comes with seven screens. Yes, you read that right, the laptop comes with six additional screens making it seem like an overkill unless you're a spy for a secret government agency. © Expanscape The laptop is called the Aurora 7 and has a massive chassis which houses six additional screens that extend out in every direction imaginable. The main screen is on the traditional spot but the other screens pop out from the left, right and top of the main screen. What’s weird is that the six additional screens are supported by hinges which could be problematic over time due to the extra weight from the displays. In fact, many laptops can barely handle the one screen on one hinge so it is a bit difficult to imagine what it feels like to support sevens screens in total. The main display is a 17.3-inch 4K panel and has three other screens that extend out with the same size and resolution. On top, there are two displays on the left and right that have a resolution of 1200p. There’s an additional single seven-inch touchscreen display mounted on the wrist rest. The prototype of the laptop is also quite heavy, considering the number of displays it has. The laptop weighs around 11.7kg which isn’t exactly light to carry around. The laptop is 4.3-inches thick and has a chassis that looks like something the military would use. Having seven 4K displays means it needs to have a capable GPU and the Aurora 7 houses a mid range NVIDIA GTX 1060. It’s not exactly the best GPU to support so many displays but it gets the job done. The laptop is powered by an Intel Core i9-9900K processor and 64GB of RAM. © Expanscape Future laptops may even get better GPUs as Expanscape wants to use the Nvidia RTX 2070 in future revisions. Future models could also sport better CPUs i.e. the AMD Ryzen 9 3950x processor or Intel’s i9-10900K. The Aurora 7 is mostly meant to be a mobile security operations station which means it isn’t really meant to be carried around. The laptop is supposed to be plugged in at all times since it can only last about an hour on battery backup. The laptop could also be used for gaming purposes but we remain highly sceptical. The laptop comes with two batteries where the second 148Wh battery is only used to power the additional displays. Also, this laptop cannot be carried in aeroplanes as it violates most flight regulatory rules due to the number and capacity of batteries in the Aurora 7. To be honest, this laptop would not be easy to carry around due to its 11kg weight and the sheer size that might require a seat of its own on aeroplanes. As of now, we don’t know the price of the Expanscape Aurora 7 and even if you plan to buy one, the company forces you to sign a non-disclosure agreement, preventing anyone from sharing publicly how much it actually costs. What do you think about the Expanscape Aurora 7? Do you think having seven screens in total is an overkill? Let us know in the comments if this laptop interests you in any way. View the full article

  16. If you recently purchased a foldable phone, you may need to worry about where you use the phone as cold weather is breaking its displays. According to Sam Mobile, both the Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy X Flip are breaking in South Korea’s bitter winter where it is currently experiencing -18 degree Celsius temperatures. © Sam-Mobile Pictures of foldable phones were posted online and it shows that the screens do not have any noticeable cracks. It's clear that the devices were rendered useless due to the weird blotches appearing on the screen. These smartphones were probably being used in extreme weather conditions that could have caused the displays of the foldable phones to falter. Having said that, it is currently not confirmed that extreme cold weather is the culprit behind causing malfunctions however it is the common theme amongst these faulty phones. Smartphones like many other gadgets, mechanical equipment and other types of devices can malfunction in sub-zero temperatures. The cold temperatures can cause brittleness which can impact a device’s functionality. In the case of foldable phones, cold temperatures can impact a phone’s foldability functionality since the displays are made of several layers and materials. © Sam-Mobile Samsung does offer a one time free replacement of the display for its foldable smartphones within the first year of ownership however it is currently unclear whether Samsung will honour replacements for these cases. Generally, Samsung phones do come with a warning about using its devices in extreme temperatures in its manual. “The device can be used in locations with an ambient temperature of 0 °C to 35 °C. You can store the device at an ambient temperature of -10 °C to 50 °C. Using or storing the device outside of the recommended temperature ranges may damage the device or reduce the battery’s lifespan.” However, the warning only refers to battery longevity and says nothing about display malfunction caused by extreme weather. Since there is no physical damage to the screens, it is possible that Samsung might repair or replace the phone at a cost. It could also be possible that the malfunction was caused by something completely unrelated and cold weather is not to blame. Source: Sam Mobile View the full article
