  4. Remember Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt's college romance movie 2 States? The Bollywood movie, based on Chetan Bhagat's bestseller novel of the same name released eight years back in 2014 and is considered one of Arjun's best films to date. The movie revolved around the life of Krish (Arjun) and Ananya (Alia), two college students hailing from very different cultural backgrounds who end up falling in love with each other before convincing their parents to accept their relationship. The film ended up doing really well and was even nominated in eight categories at the 60th Filmfare Awards, after which it won Best Music Director and Best Debut Director awards. Now, the movie was clearly a big launchpad for both actors, who had been newcomers to Bollywood. The movie was almost known for its intimate scenes between the two actors, with Arjun even once acknowledging Alia's kissing skills in the film. © Disney + Hotstar However, did you know that Arjun wasn't the first choice for the role of Krish in the film? Yeah, that's right. According to reports, the role was actually first offered to Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, and Saif Ali Khan. © Instagram © Ranbir Kapoor © Saif Ali Khan Now, as you know Ranbir and Alia are a couple in real life, so it would have been fascinating to see their romance on the screen as well. © BCCL Sajid Nadiadwala, who was the producer for the film had spoken to SRK, Ranbir, and Saif, however, he later revealed that it was Bollywood director Karan Johar who roped Arjun for the role of Krish Malhotra. The decision to choose Arjun made Sajid 'fall off from his chair', as revealed by the producer himself. © BCCL “Look at the journey the film (2 States) has taken. It started with Saif Ali Khan green lighting the project. Then Shah Rukh Khan and later Ranbir Kapoor. After that, Karan Johar came to me saying let’s make it with Arjun Kapoor and I fell off my chair.” said Sajid. He also went on to reveal that it was the right call to cast Arjun. “However, when we started making the movie and I saw the final product, I thought Karan was right in his judgment. I am proud of Arjun because I have seen him grow. I know his dad (Boney Kapoor) and mom (Mona Kapoor) very well. I am extremely proud of him for the way he has worked in films until now.” said Sajid. 5. Despite the restrictions, a former BCCI selector claims that board president Sourav Ganguly attends squad selection meetings on a regular basis. According to the BCCI's rules, the board president has no participation in selection meetings; nonetheless, former members of the selection committee believe that Ganguly is present during Indian squad selection sessions, according to an article published by the Indian Express on Friday. In fact, one of the previous selectors alleged that Ganguly has been to each selection meeting since taking over as BCCI president in October 2019, and that no one could afford to share disapproval due to his presence and stature in Indian cricket. Ganguly has even been accused of 'bullying' members who attend these sessions. View this post on Instagram The episode was revealed after the instability in Indian cricket, particularly during the Virat Kohli-Sourav Ganguly scandal in December of last year. Soon after, a photo of Ganguly and various members of the selection committee, as well as Kohli and Rohit Sharma, sitting together in 2019, began circulating, implying that Ganguly was most likely present at these sessions. When the photo was resurfaced last month, Ganguly stated that he did not believe he needed to answer to anybody or anything (on this) and that he did not believe he needed to dignify any of the unfounded claims. He went on to say that he is the president of the BCCI and that he does the work that a president of the BCCI should do. He even reminded the crowd that he had appeared in 424 international matches for India. View this post on Instagram During the recent ruckus produced by Wriddhiman Saha, the Indian wicketkeeper described Ganguly hypocrisy in the wake of the 37-year-expulsion old's from the Indian squad. After being undefeated at 61 and saving the first match against New Zealand in Kanpur, the 37-year-old received a WhatsApp message from Ganguly, according to the 37-year-old. "As long as I'm here (at the helm of the BCCI), you'll be in the team," the telegram stated. View this post on Instagram Saha was in great pain owing to a neck problem, which had reduced his 'keeping time even when KS Bharat took over. Two and a half months later, Saha was dropped from the Indian Test team. He was caught aback by the disparity between head selector Chetan Sharma's Saturday news conference and their one-on-one conversation. View the full article
  6. Chetan Sharma, the head of the All-India Selection Committee, gave information on all-rounder Hardik Pandya's potential return to Team India on Saturday (February 19). Since India's departure from the ICC T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates last year, Pandya has been out of play. Baroda's ace all-rounder was not considered for the next Sri Lanka series. Chetan Sharma said at a press conference that Pandya isn't fully match-fit now and would only be selected when he's ready to bowl. Chetan Sharma, speaking to the press after releasing the squads, said: “Definitely, Hardik was a very important part of the Indian team. But now after the injuries, we’ll say that until he isn’t 100% fit, until we get that information that he’s ready to go, is bowling and is match fit… when that comes in front of us then definitely he’s an important player and we’ll consider him immediately.” Hardik Pandya did bowl at the T20 World Cup, but he wasn't fully healthy or comfortable enough to perform to his full capacity. He's been working on his fitness since then and has been seen bowling on a few occasions. The Gujarat Titans skipper also stated that he views himself as an all-rounder and that he wants to return to bowling. View this post on Instagram However, the chief selector seemed to be irked when asked about Hardik Pandya’s decision to not become a part of the 2022 season of the Ranji Trophy. He said: “Aap Hardik se puch sakte hai wo Ranji Trophy kyu nahi khel rahe. Jo log khel rahe hai, humlog unko dekh rahe hai. (Why don’t you ask Hardik why he is not playing Ranji Trophy. We are watching those cricketers who are playing)”. Such a response from the Indian cricket team’s selection committee, and especially from the chief selector, led the fans of the Men in Blue to speculate that Pandya has managed to get in the wrong books of the officials and that his days in the blue jersey may be numbered (if not over already). 8. The president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Sourav Ganguly has found himself once again in troubled waters after he was blamed for ‘forcefully’ attending selection committee meetings when his role at the board has no say in who plays in the Indian squad and who doesn’t. Over the last few days, Ganguly has been trying to discredit all these allegations and wishing to portray himself as never being a part of the selection committee meetings. However, an old post from the official Twitter handle of the Indian cricket board has removed all doubts about whether or not Ganguly was present in such meetings. All smiles at the Senior Selection Committee meeting earlier this afternoon as the teams for the forthcoming T20I & Test series against Bangladesh were announced #TeamIndia pic.twitter.com/BxA1S6Hc0Z — BCCI (@BCCI) October 24, 2019 In 2019, BCCI shared a picture from one such selection committee meeting with both Sourav Ganguly and BCCI secretary Jay Shah sitting in the centre of the room with the then-captain of the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma sitting next to them. And in order to remove any and every doubt about whether or not the picture was taken during a selection committee meeting, all one needs to do is read the caption of the post which clearly states that it was a “Senior Selection Committee meeting” for the T20I and Test series that took place in November 2019. View this post on Instagram This isn’t the first time in the last couple of months that Ganguly has been caught trying to hide the truth during his tenure as the BCCI president. In December before Team India left for the South Africa tour, Kohli made a controversial statement about how nobody in the BCCI was against his willingness to step down as the T20I captain after the T20 World Cup 2021. Kohli’s statement came just days after Ganguly had addressed multiple media outlets and categorically said that he had asked Kohli to reconsider his decision and wanted him to continue as the leader of the squad in the shortest format of the game. Ever since the picture has gone viral, the fans of the Indian cricket team have hopped onto the post time and again talking about how Ganguly has been caught lying red-handed and may be influencing the selection committee ever since getting appointed as the president of the biggest cricket board of the world. 9. Indian cricket has been marred by various controversies in the last six months. Be it Virat Kohli’s alleged fallout with the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly or his resignation from Test captaincy, the last couple of months have given the fans a lot to wonder. One of the biggest talking points on social media in the Indian cricket community was when a journalist alleged that a ‘BCCI official’ had been interfering with the team selection matters for quite some time. The journalist claimed that the official bearer did so by inviting himself to the selection committee meeting despite knowing that he had no business of attending those meetings. For quite some time, a BCCI official kept inviting himself to selection committee meetings even when he knew he should have stayed away. Captain and coach were helpless. Couldn't do anything. He had no business being there. I hope such instances are not repeated in the future. — KSR (@KShriniwasRao) January 26, 2022 At the time, the journalist received a lot of flak as people accused him of spreading misinformation. In fact, not just fans, even veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh called him out and asked him to share with the whole the world the name of the said individual. They say there is no smoke without fire. And it looks like the journalist’s claim had some sort of truth behind it and if reports are to be believed, that BCCI official was none other than its president Sourav Ganguly. What's Ganguly's role in selection meeting? This is clearly against BCCI's constitution. pic.twitter.com/9rjjoLNESq — Shivam Aks (@AksShivam) January 31, 2022 Recently, a video has gone viral on social media where two sports journalists can be heard criticising the former Indian captain for attending the BCCI selection committee meetings and interfering in the selection process. After the video started doing rounds on the micro-blogging site, Indian cricket fans started bashing Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah for undermining the role of different stakeholders and ruining Indian cricket. © Reuters As per reports, Ganguly and Shah’s extended tenure at the BCCI will come to an end in October this year but given how messed up the situation is, many people are sceptical if they would last that long. So it was @SGanguly99 who was the BCCI Office guy who was in all selection meetings so far. This was in KSR tweet a few days back also . Very clear the “Source” for Boria & other media houses on selection & other BCCI matters . You’re a disgrace Ganguly. https://t.co/wHxrAfTBBc — Srini (@softsignalout) January 31, 2022This conversation came on TL 5 days ago. At that time, wasn't sure if I should believe it. But with the video which has come out today, if it has even an iota of truth, then the affairs in the board are more messy than what we think. What a sad state of affairs really. pic.twitter.com/ahqTfrbYSp — Gurkirat Singh Gill (@gurkiratsgill) January 31, 2022First, Shastri's direct attack on Ganguly and second these "Source based", close to BCCI journalists criticizing Ganguly for interfering in selection meetings, I don't think these are meaningless developments. Getting a feel that Ganguly's days as BCCI president are numbered. — Ricky talks Cricket (@CricRicky) January 31, 2022You know what else is problematic apart from the obvious Ganguly- Shah duo? The presence of Rohit Sharma. The day a leader decides to share power is the day he loses the room. So many news saying that dressing room is a divided house. Two lions never ruled a jungle together! https://t.co/dYhornzxAN — Cricketjeevi (@wildcardgyan) February 1, 2022As per the BCCI’s constitution, the board president is not allowed to interfere in the selection matters and if indeed this report has any truth in it, it’s a serious matter. Because by attending the selection meetings, the BCCI president undermines the role of captain, coach and all the five selectors who are charged with picking the squad. View the full article
  10. After India’s humbling defeat in South Africa, the national selectors have made several changes to the ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming home series against the West Indies. The inclusion of talented youngsters like Ravi Bishnoi and Avesh Khan have made the fans happy but some of the decisions have left everyone scratching their heads. View this post on Instagram There is one particular decision that most fans and experts are finding hard to comprehend. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was picked in the Indian team based on his IPL and domestic form, has been dropped from the T20I squad, without getting a chance to perform. Gaikwad came into limelight a couple of years ago through his IPL performances for MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK). After a breakthrough season in 2020, the right-handed opener took the cash-rich league by storm last year and won the Orange Cap – prize for finishing the season with the most number of runs. View this post on Instagram It was his T20 performance that earned him his maiden India call-up and that’s why so many people are finding it extremely difficult to wrap our heads around the fact that the 24-year-old batter has been dropped from the shortest format. Former India cricketer Saba Karim has also expressed his shock at some of the “absurd” changes selectors have made while naming the squad for the upcoming home series. © TOI Speaking on Khelneeti podcast, the former wicketkeeper, who has been a part of the national selection committee said: “Ruturaj is not part of the T20 team but has been included in ODIs. He was chosen for international cricket on the basis of his T20 performances. So a couple of changes are really absurd.Hopefully, we get a settled combination soon because there is not much time left (for the World Cup).” After the humiliation India suffered in the Rainbow Nation, this chopping and changing was on the cards but Gaikwad’s omission from the T20I squad came out of the blue. View this post on Instagram Nobody saw it coming because anyone who has watched him bat in the domestic circuit or the IPL has become a huge fan of his batting style and range of shots. He is one of the most promising young batters in the country at the moment. That’s why his exclusion from the shortest format led to a huge debate on social media with fans slamming the selectors for dropping a talented batter like him without even giving him a chance to prove his mettle. View this post on Instagram Rather than fiddling with the squad too much, it’s important that the selectors give the youngsters a long rope and make them feel secure about their position. 13. The next month’s T20 World Cup will be Virat Kohli’s last assignment as a skipper in the shortest format. Kohli dropped the bombshell a couple of days back but it was a long time coming. pic.twitter.com/Ds7okjhj9J — Virat Kohli (@imVkohli) September 16, 2021 More than the decision the whole world was surprised by the timing of his decision. But those in BCCI’s inner circles knew that it was almost inevitable as the discussions regarding the split-captaincy were going on for the last six months. © Reuters Announcing his decision via a social media post, Kohli argued that he decided to step down in order to manage his workload but not many believed him. Experts like Sunil Gavaskar felt that Kohli made the decision because he knew that the BCCI would sack him if India failed to bring home the T20 World Cup. The BCCI and the selectors are yet to announce their decision but there seems to be a common consensus that Rohit Sharma is the front-runner to replace Kohli. Rohit has been part of India’s leadership group for a long time and commands a respect within the dressing room that only a few players do. © Reuters And when you’re the most successful captain in the history of the world’s toughest T20 league, it makes your case even stronger. Rohit has guided Mumbai Indians to five titles in the last eight years and that speaks volumes of his credibility as a captain. While there is still some time left for him to take charge formally, Rohit has already started calling the shots. If you closely analyse the players picked in the T20 World Cup squad, you would realise it had Rohit’s stamp all over it. Here are 3 decisions that indicate Rohit’s choices were preferred to Kohli’s during the T20 World Cup squad selection meeting: 1. Ashwin’s Surprising Comeback © Reuters Ravichandran Ashwin hasn’t featured in India’s white-ball squad for the last four years, so, obviously, everyone was surprised to see him back in the side, that too for a big tournament like the T20 World Cup. As per a report published in TOI, Ashwin wasn’t Kohli’s first-choice off-spinner, he was keener on having Washington Sundar in the team instead. But Rohit advocated for the veteran off-spinner’s inclusion saying his experience and variations would prove to be a big asset for Team India on the slow and turning tracks in the UAE. Rohit’s argument convinced the selectors as well as Kohli and paved the way for Ashwin’s comeback to the limited-overs set-up. 2. Mumbai Indians' Dominance © Twitter/IPL Out of 15 players who are part of the T20 World Cup squad, six players play franchise cricket for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. While Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav were a no-brainer, it was the selection of youngsters like Ishan Kishan and Rahul Chahar that rolled eyeballs and indicated how little saying Kohli had in the team selection. 3. Rahul Chahar Preferred To Yuzvendra Chahal © Twitter/IPL Yuzvendra Chahal has been playing under Virat Kohli, for both franchise and country, for a long time and nobody expected him to be left out from the squad. Chahal has been Kohli’s go-to-man at RCB, whenever he needed a wicket he would throw the ball towards the leg-spinner and more often than not, he would deliver. The fact that selectors picked relatively inexperienced Rahul Chahar, who plays under Rohit for Mumbai Indians wasn’t just a coincidence. It highlights his rising status within the dressing room. Let’s make one thing clear, Chahar has performed well in whatever opportunities he has got but Chahal has been India’s best T20 spinner for so many years and it’s hard to believe Kohli was happy with his exclusion. 15. India went on a surprise run in the second Test at Lord’s after wrapping up the entire England batting order for just 120 in the second innings and gave themselves a convincing 151-run victory. KL Rahul was given the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his magnificent 129-run knock to give his side a flying start on Day 1. However, there was another person who helped Rahul and Team India achieve such a successful launch. It was his opening batting partner, Rohit Sharma, who was in command in the entire match for the first 43 overs of the game. View this post on Instagram Striking 11 fours and 1 six during his time at the pitch in the first innings, Sharma amassed 83 runs, his highest overseas score in the longest format of the game so far with a strike rate of 57.24. On the 43.4th delivery of the match however, it was England veteran James Anderson who snatched away Sharma’s dream of scoring the century when he ripped the stumps off on him, forcing him to go back to the pavilion shorthanded. View this post on Instagram Sharma had moved forward to push the ball on the off side but ended up missing the ball completely as it escaped his bat and struck the bails off in an instant. After the dismissal, Team India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour spoke about how the 34-year old flamboyant hitter needs to be a little more careful in his shot selection if he wishes to take his score to the triple digits. View this post on Instagram “We will be having a talk of what happened and what they were thinking while playing that shot. As far as Rohit is concerned, he has made it clear that pull shot fetches him runs so he is going to play those shots and we will back him playing those shots," Rathour said at the virtual press conference. "The only thing, he needs to be a little more selective, if he can have that conversation and we will have that conversation with him. Kohli, I do not think there was an issue, it was just a lapse of concentration. I do not think there is anything old coming back," he added. View this post on Instagram During his time in the middle, the ‘Hitman’ didn’t shy away from playing some of his most glorious shots which is a bit unorthodox in red-ball cricket, wherein batsmen hope to play only grounded shots. Ever since he assumed the role of the opening batsman for India, Sharma has spoken on numerous occasions about how playing aggressive cricket comes naturally to him and that if he went on to play passively, it would have an adverse effect on his performance. View this post on Instagram So after the Men in Blue won the Lord’s match and took a 1-0 lead in the series, Sharma touched upon the disappointment of not getting his maiden overseas ton. "I am a little disappointed not to get to that three-figure mark but again, I saw the replay probably 20 times and I couldn’t have done anything to that ball. What matters is the position the team is in because it’s not about individuals. Your personal records can take a backseat but this is a team sport. Anything you do and it helps the team, I am happy with it," Rohit said. View the full article
  16. A day after he was accused of discriminating against fast bowler Kagiso Rabada on racial grounds, former South Africa captain and Royal Challenger Bangalore superstar AB de Villiers has faced another huge allegation, with a fellow batsman blaming him for blocking his selection during India’s tour of 2015. Khaya Zondo was part of South Africa’s squad that toured India way back in 2015 but couldn’t break into the Playing XI of the series-deciding fifth and final ODI in Mumbai. By blaming one of the most popular cricketers for keeping him out of the side at all cost, he has shocked the whole cricket fraternity. © Twitter/Khaya Zondo Zondo said that the former Proteas skipper was his childhood hero and was someone he would look up to growing up, with a dream of representing his country one day. The 31-year-old batsman made these accusations while presenting his testimony during a Social Justice and Nation Building (SJN) hearing which took place on July 22 and was made public on Friday. Zondo said what surprised him the most was the fact that after blocking his selection, de Villiers even tried to justify his selection and expected him to understand his thought process. © BCCL “The captain (de Villiers) called me over to the side, away from the rest of the team and mentioned to me he was the one who felt I should not play. He was trying to explain himself and he was taking full responsibility for the decision,” Zondo said, during the hearing. “I remember in the moment of him explaining himself to me, losing all respect for him as a captain, and as someone I looked up to as a cricketing hero of mine because I could not believe this guy was trying to justify himself to me, and it came across as if I should accept this decision because the decision came from him. “I switched off mentally for the rest of the day and I detached myself from the team because it was clear I was not wanted,” he added. “Switching off helped me cope with everything that was happening. The hardest part was watching the players who were selected ahead of me playing and having the opportunity to shine for South Africa on a world stage, in India and having a chance to play and potentially impress and get future IPL opportunities,” said Zondo, explaining how the incident affected him. © Reuters After being denied a debut on the 2015 tour, Zondo would go on to make his ODI debut three years later in 2018 and could only represent South Africa in five 50-over matches. Earlier this week, former South Africa selector Hussein Manack had accused de Villiers of leaving fast bowler Kagiso Rabada on racial grounds, something which he has categorically denied describing all such claims as “ridiculous”. “I have never wanted KG dropped from any team at any time.
