  3. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar entering the Islamabad Accountability Court. Photo: Geo News ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar reached the Islamabad Accountability Court on Monday to attend the hearing of a corruption case against him. Judge Mohammad Bashir directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to provide Dar with a copy of the case documents. The judge then set September 27 as the next date of hearing when the finance minister will be formally indicted by the court. Dar was also directed to submit the surety bond worth Rs1 million. Dar's counsel asked the court to be granted seven days for perusing the reference against his client, as it is spread over 23 volumes. Dar to step down if court rejects bail: sources Bailable warrants of arrest for the finance minister were issued after he failed to appear in court The judge denied the request and observed that the court will conduct daily hearings in the case. It also directed Dar to deposit a Rs5 million surety bond with the court to ensure his appearance at the next hearing At the last hearing, the court had issued warrants for Dar's arrest as he failed to appear in court to face charges of having assets beyond his known sources of income. The corruption reference was filed by the NAB in light of the Supreme Court's July 28 judgment in the Panama Papers case. Dar returned to the country last night from London along with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
  4. ISLAMABAD: The accountability court hearing corruption cases against the Sharif family issued on Tuesday a second summons for the accused after they failed to appear at today's hearing. As the hearing began, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) submitted an implementation report in court with regards to the summons issued to the accused. Judge Mohammad Bashir was informed by the NAB prosecutor that the family's security officer at their Lahore residence received the summons. The NAB prosecutor informed the court that the security officer said Hussain and Hasan Nawaz had instructed him not to accept the summons. He added that the summons was sent to the correct address. The judge remarked that the summons was for the suspects and not the security officer. "Don't just get rid of the task by delivering the summons to the security in-charge next time and get the job done," the judge observed. He said this is a criminal, not a civil court. "The security officer's statement should be on record if the summons was given to him." he added. Accountability court summons Sharif family members, Ishaq Dar in remaining references Nawaz Sharif, daughter Maryam, son-in-law Safdar, sons Hussain and Hasan summoned on Sept 19 The judge also turned down the prosecutor's plea of issuing arrest warrants against the accused to ensure their presence in court. The court was hearing the case of three references submitted by NAB against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his sons Hussain and Hasan, daughter Maryam and son-in-law MNA Capt (retd) Safdar. The court had summoned today the Sharif family members with regards to the references submitted against them in light of the Supreme Court's July 28 judgment in the Panama Papers case. However, as of now, none of Nawaz's family members that were summoned today are present in the country. The court then ordered for the issuance of another summons to the Sharif family and adjourned the hearing until September 26. The judge also ordered for the posting of the summons in front of the Sharif family's Lahore residences and directed the investigating officer to trace Hasan and Hussain's London addresses. Senator Asif Kirmani speaking to the media after the hearing on Tuesday. Photo: Geo News The judge also directed Senator Asif Kirmani, Nawaz's political adviser, who was present in court, that he should make the Sharif family members aware of the summons against them. Speaking to the media after the hearing, Kirmani said the Sharif family received "some notices from NAB at their Lahore residence". "Once the notices got delivered to me in Islamabad yesterday, I considered it my moral duty to be present today and inform the honourable court of the unavailability of the Sharif family," he added. Kirmani explained that the Sharif family, understandably, is in London where Kulsoom Nawaz is being treated [for lymphoma]. He added that he informed the judge of this as well. In response to a question, Kirmani said he cannot give a date regarding the Sharif family's appearance in court as it all depends on Kulsoom Nawaz's recovery.

  8. ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) ordered on Thursday bail-able warrants of arrest against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan for failing to appear before it in the contempt of court case against him. The ECP ordered Imran to submit surety bond of Rs100,000 until September 25 and nominate two persons who would ensure payment of the amount and be held responsible otherwise. Imran was also ordered to appear on that day in the commission in person. Earlier, during the hearing of contempt proceedings, PTI chief's counsel Babar Awan argued before the ECP that proceedings against his client should be postponed until the matter is decided by the high court. The five-member ECP bench, headed by chief election commissioner Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan, had summoned Imran in person on Thursday but he failed to do so. PTI challenges ECP decision to hear contempt case against Imran Khan IHC sends notices to Akbar S Babar, ECP to submit replies by Sept 7 Presenting his arguments before the ECP bench, Awan contended that the ECP should halt its proceedings in the case as the PTI's challenge to ECP's jurisdiction will be heard by a larger bench of the Islamabad High Court today. Photo: UN NEW YORK: The United Nations General Assembly opened its 72nd session on Tuesday, with an emphasis on striving for peace and a decent life for all on a sustainable planet, according to the UN. ?The UN was created for people,? Miroslav Lajcak said in his first address as president of the General Assembly. ?The people who need the UN the most are not sitting in this hall today. They are not involved in the negotiation of resolutions. They do not take the floor at high-level events. It is one of the tasks of the General Assembly to make sure that their voices can still be heard.? In today?s address, he noted that while it was ?impossible? to select one priority for the UN to focus on this year, his aim will be to strive for balance, so that all points of view are represented. Lajcak takes the reins one week before the start of the high-level General Assembly debate on September 19, and said he hoped the 193 UN member states participating would treat each other with diplomacy and mutual respect. Speaking to reporters later in the day, Lajcak reiterated the importance of using the world body to assist people around the world. Addressing the opening of the General Assembly, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also emphasised the importance of focusing on people in the UN?s work and underscored his proposed reforms to streamline the organisation. ?People around the world are rightly demanding change and looking for governments and institutions to deliver,? he said. ?We all agree that the United Nations must do even more to adapt and deliver. That is the aim of the reform proposals that this assembly will consider.? He added that one key change within and beyond the UN must be the empowerment of women and girls around the world, and highlighted his own roadmap for achieving gender parity. Abbasi's address Sources informed Geo News that Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will address the session on September 21. During the meeting, Maryam was accompanied by Senator Pervaiz Rasheed, State Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry and party leader Maiza Hameed. "If the allegations [against Nawaz] had any truth, then they should have been proved, what was the need for an Iqama," she said, referring to Nawaz's disqualification due to the holding of a work permit for UAE.

A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Aijaz Afzal, will hear the petitions on September 12. The other two members of the bench include Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Aijazul Ahsan. Three different review petitions were filed by Nawaz Sharif and one by his daughter, Maryam Nawaz. On July 28, Nawaz Sharif stepped down as the prime minister of Pakistan after being disqualified from holding public office by the Supreme Court in a landmark decision on the Panama Papers case. Disqualified by SC, Nawaz Sharif steps down as prime minister Nawaz Sharif disqualified for failing to disclose his un-withdrawn receivables constituting assets from UAE-based Capital FZE in his 2013 election nominations papers Announcing its verdict, the five-member bench unanimously disqualified Nawaz Sharif for failing to disclose his un-withdrawn receivables constituting assets from UAE-based Capital FZE in his nominations papers for the 2013 general election, stating that this meant he was not ?honest? and ?truthful?, as per the Constitution. Sharif, in his review petitions filed on August 15, pleaded the apex court to dismiss the petitions filed by Sheikh Rasheed, Imran Khan and Siraj-ul-Haq, which sought his disqualification. The petitions added that the five-member bench did not have jurisdiction to rule over case 184-3 to disqualify the prime minister ?without fair trial? and added that the apex court overseeing the NAB probe is violation ?against the trichotomy Article 175?. The former prime minister, through his petitions, argued that the decision passed by the court on July 28 should have been passed by a three-member bench as Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and Justice Gulzar Ahmed's jurisdiction had expired after their dissenting judgement on April 20. Accountability court accepts all references against Sharifs, Dar: NAB Sharif family members and Dar can face up to 14 years imprisonment, heavy fine, and freezing of property as well as lifelong disqualification from public office if found guilty Earlier on Friday, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) submitted four interim references against the Sharif family and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar before an accountability court in Islamabad. Under tight security, cartons full of documents from the NAB regional offices were ushered into the Islamabad Accountability Court amid much media hype as the Supreme Court's deadline was to expire on September 8. Nawazish Ali, a spokesman for NAB, told Geo News that all the references have been accepted for trial and nothing was sent back. The references were filed in light of the Supreme Court's July 28 decision in the Panama Papers case. NAB was given six weeks, from the date of the court's order, to file the reference in an accountability court while the court was granted six months to wrap up the proceedings.

Additionally, Justice Faisal Arab, too, went on leave and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Justice Saqib Nisar had to travel to Quetta. Before the case was adjourned in August, the bench had also summoned, for the second time, a copy of Imran Khan?s passport for verification of the ?non-resident? status. Meanwhile, Abbasi's counsel Akram Sheikh had argued that it was necessary to prove the source of funds arguing over the money trail of Imran Khan's properties. Meanwhile, in today's hearing on the petition filed by the party to stop ECP from party funding probe, Islamabad High Court`s Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani directed PTI to present the sources of party funds to the ECP in two weeks.
