  1. Let's face it, we all have been there, thinking if we should go for it or not. We have all had that locker room talk, discussing all sorts of things about our body hair (and yes, about hair down there as well), and what to do with it. Whether one's partner prefers it all shaved off, trimmed, or present in all its natural glory. The thing is, no matter what, at least once in your lifetime, you will go for a session to trim, shave or wax your body hair off. Now, here is where things get tricky - what do you actually go for - do you shave it all off, wax it off, or just trim it off? Here are a few things that you ought to consider before you finally make the jump: 1. The Pain © Getty Images Remember Steve Carrel getting a wax in 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin'? Well, yes, it can be that painful. Even the manliest of men tend to cry like babies when they go for their first waxing session. Furthermore, The entire experience of getting hot wax applied on your body and then a bunch of hair and some skin pulled off in one go, can leave some serious psychological scars, especially if you plan to go for a full Brazilian. In case you think that you have a very shallow tolerance, we suggest you simply forget waxing, and instead, get things shaved or better yet, trimmed. 2. The Frequency © Getty Images As painful as it may be, waxing your hair off has its advantages. The first and foremost is the fact that you don't need to get it done that often. Shaving, on the other hand though, will ensure that you reach out for that razor every now and then. Also, do consider the fact that the hair regrowth gets denser with time, as does it get quicker. With trimming, you won't get as denser regrowth as with shaving. But, you will need to trim your hair often. 3. The Occasion © Getty Images Chances are that if you find yourself reading this article, you may have a special evening coming up, or an occasion, where you may have to take your clothes off in front of some people (or someone). If that is the case, we suggest you take the timing of your endeavour into consideration. Also, consider that if you plan to do it yourself, you may have some accidents that may leave a cut or a knick where you don't want it to. Try getting things sorted two or three days before your special day. 4. The Outfit © Getty Images If the occasion or the evening that you have planned, does not include you getting in your birthday suit, chances are, you may have some leeway when it comes to getting things done. If you still plan on wearing something that will show some chest and you plan to clean up your act (as you should), we suggest that you go for a close trim, instead of a shave or a wax. That way, you minimise pain, get things done quickly and do not change much. 5. The Comfort © Getty Images This is actually the key to everything - how comfortable are you in getting any of it done? More importantly, how comfortable are you getting things done in some intimate areas by someone else? Of course, you can try and get things sorted yourself, but we would advise against that if you plan to get things done properly. If you plan on getting only a few areas done, selectively, doing it yourself is an easy way to go about. However, if you plan on being comprehensive, do yourself a favour and hire someone to do it.
  2. You think you are 'too millennial' to use a shaving brush? Well, think again! An old school tool that your father and grandfather used might also be a great tool for you. Why you ask? Well for starters, a shaving brush is a godsend for your skin as it not only exfoliates it, but also removes dead skin cells for good measure. Additionally, it whips air into the shaving cream to make a good lather, which in turn softens your facial scruff and makes it easier for you to shave. In fact, the only reason why you should be shaving without using a shaving brush is if a) You enjoy building a lather and applying it to your face with your bare hands, b) you just don't like getting a close shave, or c) you just don't want to flaunt healthy, glowing skin. In other words, if you actually wanted a smooth and close shave, you CANNOT do so without adding a quality shaving brush to your grooming kit. Now that you understand the importance of a shaving brush in your grooming routine, we come to an important question - How do you buy a shaving brush for yourself that is best suited for your needs? 5. Here's a realistic scenario for you. For some xyz reason, you have to shave the beard off your face. However, shaving your beard is like a nightmare that you don't want to take part in. You're afraid of razor burns and cuts. But if you shave while taking care of everything, you might possibly master the technique of the good shave sans razor burns. 1. Take A Hot Bath © Getty Images Hot water makes your skin soft which reduces friction between your skin and the beard and helps the razor glide through your skin smoothly. 2. Lather Up © Getty Images Take two blobs of the shaving cream and massage gently on your face and neck then you wait for a while and let it sit for 1 to 2 minutes. It's important to remember that a dry shave drags the blade across the skin, increasing the likelihood of ingrown hairs, razor bumps, and irritation. 3. Use A Fresh Blade © Getty Images Men use old blades that cause tears in the skin that can be uncomfortable. A standard razor can be used about 5 to 7 times before it gets spoilt. 4. Respect The Order © Getty Images Start with the sides of your beard, then move to your neck and up your chin, and end with your moustache. Mixing things up might lead to haphazard growth. 5. Reduce The Pressure © Getty Images Pushing hard against your skin only increases skin irritation. Avoid rough handling by smoothly gliding by using a pre-shave essential oil. 6. Rinse & Repeat © Getty Images Wash the razor after every two strokes to clear stubble and cream that can cause nicks. Finally, apply a moisturizer to help your skin heal.
  6. Armpit hair can be an extremely controversial territory for men, because whether you keep it or get rid of it depends entirely on how you like it. While armpit hair is absolutely fine, given India's weather overall, it probably is advisable to not let them grow way too much to avoid excessive sweat and stench. A little bit of growth is absolutely fine, even when you're shirtless on the beach playing volleyball. © Pinterest However, how you decide to groom it is important. While most men turn to their local salons and ask for a quick swipe of the razor on their armpits as well, probably once in a month or a fortnight, it isn't the best way. No, doing it at home while using the best shaving cream with your own razor is also not a good idea at all. Here is why you should always trim your armpit hair, instead of shaving. 1. Your armpit does not have an even skin surface. It's extremely tricky to maneuvre a sharp razor on that uneven surface, and more often than not, you will end up with a cut or two. The skin there is also extremely sensitive apart from being uneven, so a bloody mess isn't a possibility you can rule out. Why take chances? Use a trimmer with '1' as the setting (setting it at zero probably isn't a good idea if you're clumsy) and zoom through without any cuts or scrapes. © Getty Images 2. When you shave, the hair seems to grow thicker and coarser, because it has been cut near the skin surface. The result? That itchy, prickly feeling on your skin within a couple of days. You know no feeling in the world is worse. It isn't as bad when you trim. © Instagram/Sonusood 3. Shaving is tough on your skin. When you shave a part of skin that is as soft and sensitive, the skin is always damaged. Also, razor burns and even the smallest of cut/nick with take way longer in this area to heal. You may end up with pimples, boils, and a number of other annoying skin issues. Why not use a trimmer and nip the whole situation at the bud? All we can say is, it's easier to trim your troubles away.
  7. When it comes to shaving, good technique is a product of experience (as is the case with most things in life). However, that doesn't mean that you have to deal with painful nicks and cuts, or those annoying skin irritations, until you eventually become a skilled shaver. There are steps you can take to improve your shaving experience right from day one, and it all starts with getting your hands on the best razor. This simple act goes a long way to helping you achieve the smoothest, closest shave, and we're going to help you zero in on the perfect one. Selecting A Razor: The Basics Whether you plan to sport a classy clean shave or maintain a stylish beard, there's an element of grooming behind every look. In short, ignoring the razor completely is just not an option - instead, you should be selecting the best one as per your grooming routine. Essentially, you want a razor that can glide effortlessly over the contours of your face, removing hairs as closely as possible without leaving you looking like you've been attacked by a wild animal. 8. For a lot of men, shaving is just another thing that has to be done, which is why their daily shaving routine is pretty basic - lather, shave and rinse. What's more? A lot of those men expect perfect results when they look in the mirror, even though their shaving routine is always less-than-perfect. However, shaving is more than just a chore - it's a rite of passage for every man. As such, it's worth putting some time and effort into your shaving routine, especially when you consider how impactful a truly great shave can actually be for you. Which is not to say that achieving the perfect shave requires some great sacrifice on your part. In fact, transforming your daily shave from an exasperating chore to a sought after part of your morning ritual is fairly easy. All you need to do is spare just a little bit of your valuable time for preparation, arm yourself with the right tools, and adhere to the following five simple steps. Achieve A Perfect Shave Every Time With These Easy Steps STEP 1: Preparation Is Key © Pexels The perfect shave requires the perfect surface, so the first step is all about preparing your skin before you unsheath your shaving paraphernalia. Use hot water to wash your face thoroughly - it'll soften your stubble, making your razor's job easier. Hot water will also open up your pores, which offers the blade a smooth surface to glide across. Lastly, it will help clear away the initial layer of oil, dirt, and dead skin, which can clog up all types of razors. STEP 2: Getting Down To Business © Wikimedia Commons Once your skin has been prepped, the next step is to get a nice, rich lather going. Apply a top quality shaving cream or the best shaving foam to your skin and work it into a lather using a shaving brush. This will hold your facial hair in an upright position, allowing the blade to approach the base of the hair which results in a smoother and closer shave. For an even more luxurious experience, you can even use a pre-shave beard oil on your skin before you lather up. STEP 3: In The Act © Unsplash Now comes the most technical part - the wielding of the blade. These days, the best electric shavers are waterproof, which means they can be used for wet as well as dry shaves, and they tend to do an admirable job, especially if all you want is a trim to keep your beard well groomed. However, if a close, clean shave is what you're after, a razor blade should be your weapon of choice, and the right technique will elevate the quality of your shave no end. You might have heard about the importance of shaving 'with the grain' without fully understanding what it means. Run your fingers over your stubble - if it feels smooth, you're moving with the grain and if it's rough, you're going against it. Shaving with the grain simply means moving the razor in the direction your hair is growing in, which makes for a much smoother, closer shave without running the risk of razor burns, cuts, and other skin irritations. Always remember to use gentle strokes, letting the weight of the razor dictate how much pressure you apply to the skin. STEP 4: Respect Your Razor © Pexels You'll get the best shave only as long as you treat your shaving implements with care, which is why looking after your blades is crucial. Rinse your razor blades after each stroke with hot water to dislodge any hair or shaving gel stuck in between. The most important thing to keep in mind is always having fresh, sharp blades at hand. Even the best safety razor won't be as effective if it doesn't come equipped with sharp blades. Old, worn out, and even dirty blades are more likely to cause nicks and cuts. And remember, your razor should be doing all the work here - if you have to exert a lot of effort, it's probably time to switch out your blunt blades for new razor sharp ones. STEP 5: Don't Forget About After-Shave Care © Shutterstock A shave isn't over when you put the razor down and wash your face - the perfect shave always ends with the proper aftercare for your face. Use cold water for the final face wash, as it helps close your pores. Always remember to pat dry with a towel, as rubbing can cause redness and irritation. Your final act should be to apply a good alcohol-free post-shave balm or cream. This will prevent your skin from drying out, while simultaneously soothing, hydrating, and nourishing it - leaving you with smoother, healthier skin and a classy clean shave!
  9. Shaving might seem to be an extremely simple affair, but it's not. Every man has had bad experiences with shaving, at least once in his life, and it definitely is one of those experiences that one does not want a repeat of. (c) Getty Images There is a correct way and a wrong way to shave, but the trouble is that no one quite knows which is which. You're supposed to glide your razor across your face in a specific direction, that has to do with the usual hair growth pattern on a human male face. Following that pattern will reduce cuts and burns significantly, and also make sure that the stubble that grows afterwards is flawless. (c) Getty Images All you need to do is look at the face shave map here, and follow the arrows to determine the direction in which your razor should move. Make sure to rinse your razor after every stroke. (c) MensXP Say hello to a flawless shave! You're welcome.

  11. We understand that people tend to take sports very seriously, as they should. Athletes and coaches tend to work together and push their boundaries of fitness, strength and stamina to become better and achieve new heights in their choice of sport. The sportsman's spirit is full of adrenaline, the determination to do better than ever and the hunger to win. We get it. What we do not get is how some players, or rather their coaches, decide 'how much is too much'? What are the boundaries, where do we draw the line? The case of Bengal's Under-19 Hockey Team is the perfect example of 'taking things too far'. Bengal Hockey Coach Asks U-19 Players to Shave Head as Punishment for Match Loss pic.twitter.com/aLnrok4JBK — Gurpreet Singh (@Gurpree46492633) January 21, 2019 During the 2019 Junior National Championship (Division B) taking place in Jabalpur, Bengal 1-5 to Namdhari XI in the quarterfinal, post which their coach, Anand Kumar, allegedly forced every member of the squad to shave their heads clean for losing the game. Out of the roster of 18, all but two players refused to give in to their coach's preposterous demand and did not get their heads shaved. One of the players who didn't get his head shaved said, that the Kumar threatened to do the same even after they won their first match against Gujarat just because they “didn't play well.” However, there is a flip side to the story as well, in which the coach absolutely denied all allegations and said that the students who did go bald, did it completely voluntarily and out of repentance for playing badly. He did admit to scolding them and saying something about 'shaving their heads' off, but clarified that he said that in frustration and on the spur of the moment. As soon as the story broke, the Bengal Hockey Association officially announced a three-member committee to carry out further investigation. "I will speak to the players once they are back from school. Necessary steps will be taken," said Manmeet Singh Goindi, Director, Sports Authority of India.
  12. What do you do when you realise your four-years worth of engineering degree isn't quite living up to your expectations, and the sound of your career path ascending towards global partnerships isn't something you are looking forward to anymore? Well, we are not sure about what anyone else would do in such a situation, but here is what Shantanu did - he bid adieu to his engineering degree from NIT Nagpur and quit his fancy job at McKinsey, to give men the best shaves of their lives. No, really. We are not kidding. © MensXP Shantanu Deshpande, a computer science engineer by degree and working with a globally recognised management consulting company McKinsey, ditched the “good life” in the blink of an eye, to give the smoothest shaving experience to the urban male population in India. It was a conversation with his US-based childhood friend Manu that really triggered the idea of setting up one of India's best selling men's grooming brand, Bombay Shaving Company, in October 2015. The conversation that revolved around the boom in men's grooming startups in the United States, and how these new and quirky newbies were taking on FMCG giants like Gillette, sent Shantanu into a tizzy, with the need to explore similar opportunities closer to home. After much research and deliberation, as well as detailed discussions with industry veterans, Shantanu realised that it was the right move to shake up the underserved and monopolised market - and there lay his chance! © MensXP Shantanu along with his Raunak Munot, Deepu Panicker and Rohit Jaiswal took the big plunge and co-founded the company playing on each one of their strengths, that seemed to completely fit with the company's core needs. What started out as 500 annual shipments in 2016, has scaled up to 10,000 shipments a month today. What's even better news for Shantanu is that the official website sees 300,000 average visitors every month! Today, Bombay Shaving Company functions on both online and offline routes of business, and their products are spread across four categories, namely shaving, bath, beard and skin. With a team of 60 young professionals, Bombay Shaving Company is trying to create a product range that distinctly stands out for its credible product quality. © MensXP Along with product innovations that the brand is trying to bring to their individual products, they are also trying to incorporate consumer feedbacks in their newest productions. Be it their single blade neo-retro razor or the beard care starter kit, each of their creation reflects the amount of research and passionate involvement that the final product has gone through. It is Shantanu's vision and desire to see his team grow to its fullest potential, all with risks, mistakes and failures, that makes this brand so different from others. With these guys being so invested in grooming the urban men to perfection, the future for Bombay Shaving Company only seems more bright. © MensXP Learn about the many challenges and successes that Shantanu's decision reaped in the longer run, and how Bombay Shaving Company went on to fulfill Shantanu's larger dream of seeing well-groomed men walking the face of this earth, in this exclusive conversation with MensXP.
  13. November is here, and if you're aware of global trends related to men's fashion and health, you already know that it is as much the month of men's facial hair as it is the month of festivities. No Shave November as well as Movember (often used interchangeably) are here, and the world will start seeing glorious beards and moustaches everywhere, at least for a month. Movember is an intriguing phenomenon, and here are 8 facts about it that will make you want to not shave for a month. 1. Contrary to popular belief, Movember did not start in America. It started in Australia in 2003, when a couple of Australian men wondered why men don't grow facial hair, especially moustaches anymore. © Movember 2. Movember and No-Shave-November are not the same thing, even though they are often used interchangeably. The Movember organization raises and donates the money to programs related to prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's mental health issues. On the other hand, the No-Shave November movement encourages men (and women) to donate the money they would have otherwise spent on shaving-related products and services to the American Cancer Society. © L'Oreal 3. Movember might just be perceived as a fad by some, but it has raised some serious money. It has raised more than $769 Million, internationally. © Unsplash 4. Movember participants are called 'Mo Bros' and 'Mo Sistas'. Yes, women are allowed to participate in Movember as well. © Unsplash 5. The first Movember received a lot of flak. Co-founder Adam Garone recollects facing hostile work environment, his ex hating the moustache, and parents of young children giving him disapproving looks. © Unsplash 6. Four million moustaches have been grown because of Movember, since the inception. © Unsplash 7. Movember, of course, is celebrated and looked up to because of the joy of giving, but one can win amazing prizes too, in the official competitions. © Unsplash 8. Movember used to have its own condom sponsor. The super catchy slogan read: 'Cover your lip, cover your tip.' © Unsplash
