  5. The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) was supposed to be grander than ever before. The BCCI and the official broadcasters had hoped that with the arrival of two new teams, the cash-rich league would once again create a new viewership record. The opening week ratings from the previous editions have always presented a clear picture as to how the whole tournament would pan out over the next few weeks. Given all the hype and excitement, the ratings in the opening week are always on the higher side as compared to the subsequent weeks. © IPL The ratings for the opening week of IPL 2022 are out and the results are contrary to everybody’s expectations. The viewership has taken a massive hit, falling by nearly 33 percent. According to a report in InsideSport, the first eight matches of IPL 2022 witnessed 2.52 on TV rating charts, which is nearly 30 percent less than the last year when the opening week’s action had generated a rating of 3.75. In 2020, the opening week had garnered a solid 3.85 rating. View this post on InstagramApart from the huge decline in TV rating, the overall reach of the lucrative has suffered a great deal, dropping around 14 percent as against last year. Last year, 267.7 million people had tuned into their television sets in the opening week itself, while in 2022 this figure has dropped down to 229.06 million. From the BCCI’s point of view, these numbers are not satisfactory, especially since they are in the market to sell the broadcasting rights of their cash-cow for the next five year cycle 2023-27. View this post on Instagram For a league that aspires to compete with the world’s top sports leagues, this steep decline in viewership is not a good sign. What’s the reason? Now, one simple explanation could be that last year there was a partial lockdown in place and people were confined to their houses, and it contributed to the higher ratings. However, this year with COVID-19 situation under control, things have started to get back to normal and that’s why instead of following the matches on TV, people are streaming live action on the OTT platform. View this post on Instagram Another reason could be that people don’t find the league attractive anymore. It has started to bore them out and that is why they, instead of tuning into all the matches, they have started picking and choosing and it has affected the overall viewership. Another reason could be that Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings – two of the most popular franchises – have performed way below expectation, facing defeat in all three matches so far. Both these teams have a great reach and their poor performances have alienated the fans even further. What do fans think? View this post on Instagram The fans are divided in their opinions. Some feel that the ratings have dropped because more and more people have started enjoying the action on their personal devices. There are also those who feel that people are moving away from the league because IPL games don’t give them the same kick anymore. Some are even blaming the BCCI for increasing the number of teams and killing the fun and excitement. In sab kya farak padta hai. ? Last year is team log Ghar me velle bete the. That's main reason — Shashank Balnad (@shashank_balnad) April 8, 2022Till 2021, ipl is all about 8 different teams. But pushing to 10 teams is like boring , especially fans can't wait to see their favourite team for waiting for long days gap for every match. Especially CSK , RCB , SRH ,MI & DC having almost 5+ days gap for every match. — Raghu varma (@raghuvarma330) April 8, 2022Group format, star sports commentery, and no hype ,wrost ad,this is the main reason for viewership fall. 8. For the first time in their history Chennai Super Kings (CSK) splashed over Rs 10 crore to sign a player in the IPL auction. The defending champions broke their bank, spending Rs 14 crore, to bring their star pacer Deepak Chahar back to their squad. Back where he belonged - Chahar back in yellow Congratulations @ChennaiIPL @deepak_chahar9 #TATAIPLAuction @TataCompanies pic.twitter.com/FTxUrcID6H — IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) February 12, 2022 Despite splurging such a huge amount, when the deal was done it was hailed as a massive win for MS Dhoni’s side. The CSK fans hoped that he would provide the balance to their squad, especially after the departure of Shardul Thakur who was picked by Delhi Capitals at the auction for Rs 10.75 crore. © Twitter IPL To the disappointment of CSK fans, the fast-bowling all-rounder suffered a “right quadriceps injury” during the third and the final T20I against the West Indies in Kolkata. He was in the middle of a brilliant spell when he suffered the unfortunate injury and had to walk off the field. Later, the BCCI, through a press release, confirmed the type of injury and also announced that he has been ruled out of the T20I series against Sri Lanka, which starts later today. UPDATE : Deepak Chahar and Suryakumar Yadav ruled out of @Paytm #INDvSL T20I Series. #TeamIndia More Details — BCCI (@BCCI) February 23, 2022 Without revealing how serious the injury was, the Indian cricket board said that Chahar will head to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for “further management” of his injury and to start the rehabilitation process. With IPL around the corner, the CSK fans were hoping for his speedy recovery so that he could join their attack from the first match itself. But according to a report published in The Times of India, the 29-year-old’s injury looks worse than what many people had anticipated and it could take him a lot longer to recover. Quoting a source, the report added that the injury is so grave that the fast bowler could also miss the whole IPL 2022. © Twitter IPL “His injury looks bad. For all you know, he could be out of the IPL too (he was bought by the Chennai Super Kings for Rs 14 crore in the IPL auction),” a source was quoted as saying by TOI. While CSK supporters hoped for his speedy recovery, the fans of other franchises took the opportunity to mock the four-time champions. While some pulled their legs for spending a major amount of their purse to sign one single player, others joked that they brought it down on themselves by ignoring Suresh Raina in their auction. 10. 11. Sachin Tendulkar is arguably one of the finest ever to have played the game of cricket. In a career spanning over two decades, Sachin achieved almost every record that is there for the taking by a batter. In such a long career, Tendulkar, on many occasions, was on the receiving end of some harsh calls by the on-field umpires. Despite dealing with howlers throughout his career, Tendulkar was never a fan of introducing technology into the game. It was largely because of him that India didn't trust the decision review system for a long time before it was made mandatory by the ICC. View this post on Instagram With the game becoming more and more favourable for the batters, an incident that took place at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday prompted a suggestion from the Little Master. In the fourth Ashes Test, Ben Stokes survived a close call after a Cameron Green delivery came back in sharply and hit the off-stump, but fortunately for the England all-rounder, the bail didn't come off and he continued his innings. partnership #Ashes #PinkTest pic.twitter.com/Ai2yAverEv — Jane McGrath’s Barmy Army (@TheBarmyArmy) January 7, 2022 It was such a shocker of an incident that the on-field umpire Paul Reiffel thought the ball had hit Stokes' pads and gave him out LBW. Stokes immediately challenged the call and once the replays confirmed that he was not out, he couldn't stop laughing looking at the turn of events. Tendulkar posted a video of the incident on Twitter and came up with a suggestion to introduce a new rule in a bid to make the game fairer for bowlers. "Should a law be introduced called ‘hitting the stumps’ after the ball has hit them but not dislodged the bails? What do you think guys? Let’s be fair to bowlers," Tendulkar wrote on Twitter. A fan said the bails should be completely removed while another one said Tendulkar should've come up with this suggestion when he was an active cricketer. 12. The Indian cricket team lost their early lead in the three-match Test series in South Africa as soon as they had earned it after the heroic return made by the Proteas, led by their skipper Dean Elgar got them the victory at the Wanderers cricket ground with a day left to spare. Despite some of the biggest names of the Indian cricketing community like Ashish Nehra talking about an apparently “big gap” between the two sides’ talent level and determination to win the series, while taking the side of the Men in Blue, the South African proved everyone wrong and snatched away the second Test with sheer grit and determination. View this post on Instagram The former captain of the Indian cricket team, Test cricket veteran and the head coach of the squad, Rahul Dravid was asked to break down what went wrong for Team India in the penultimate Test of the series and ‘The Wall’ suggested that one ‘make or break’ occurrence in the post-match conference. According to Dravid, it was the multiple holes in the batting order of the substitute captain KL Rahul that prevented the team from scoring the much-needed 60-70 runs in the first and the second innings that would have been extremely crucial in giving the squad some wiggle room and the ability to protect a decent total. View this post on Instagram “The wickets in the first two Tests have been a little challenging, I will give that to the batsmen. But we pride ourselves on wanting to do better and the batting unit certainly can look to maybe seize a few key moments and when we get those partnerships, maybe make them a little bit longer," said Dravid at the post-match press conference. "We could have probably got 60-70 runs more in that first innings. Probably that could have made a significant difference to this game and we would like to bat a bit better and need to keep improving," he added. View this post on Instagram Dravid also suggested that in order to win on these highly-challenging pitches, especially for the batters, at least one of the players would need to score a century. Taking evidence from the previous results in the ongoing series, Dravid supported his claim by talking about KL Rahul’s mighty ton in Johannesburg and Protea captain Dean Elgar’s unbeaten effort to put 96 runs on the board while chasing India in the second inning of the second Test. “May be some of the guys who got starts could have converted into hundreds and that was difference in the first Test as we had Rahul in the first game, who had got hundred for us and we ended up on the winning side.” "In the second game they had someone (Dean Elgar) scoring 96 and they ended up on winning side," he added. View this post on Instagram Another aspect of Team India’s game plan that was missing from the second Test was the squad’s original skipper Virat Kohli, who was withdrawn from the Playing XI at the very last minute after he had suffered a severe upper back spasm. However, Dravid did manage to give a favourable update on the elite-level cricketer’s health. View the full article
