  1. Tech giant Meta permits Facebook users in some countries to share Ukraine war posts urging violence against Russian invaders and Putin
  2. According to a notification issued by FBR, revised valuation of property will be announced on January 15
  3. Facebook temporarily blocked posts with the hashtag #ResignModi that called for the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday. The social media giant has now restored the hashtag after it was accused of censoring posts because it may have violated community standards. This is what happens when you search for the hashtag #ResignModi on Facebook (at least in India). pic.twitter.com/Rzehg3meB8 — Shivam Vij (@DilliDurAst) April 28, 2021 "We temporarily blocked this hashtag by mistake, not because the Indian government asked us to,” Facebook said in a statement. Andy Stone from Facebook communications later tweeted that the social network was "looking into what happened.” This hashtag has been restored and we are looking into what happened. — Andy Stone (@andymstone) April 28, 2021 When searching for the #ResignModi hashtag, users in India met with a message "Posts with #ResignModi are temporarily hidden here. Some content in those posts goes against our community standards.” Last week, Twitter also removed several posts at the requests of the Indian Government as “Certain people are misusing social media to create panic in society,” India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had said in a statement. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter all removed posts which they were asked to do which put a question mark on the integrity of social media companies in India. © Unsplash/glen-carrie "When we receive a valid legal request, we review it under both the Twitter Rules and local law. If the content violates Twitter's Rules, the content will be removed from the service," a Twitter spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday. "If it is determined to be illegal in a particular jurisdiction, but not in violation of the Twitter Rules, we may withhold access to the content in India only.” It seems like the recent blockage of the hashtag was only implemented in India as Facebook users in other countries could still access posts marked with #ResignModi. © Reuters There were about 12,000 posts hidden that Facebook later restored after it scrutinised all over the world for manipulating information. Whether Facebook blocked the hashtag by mistake or not, it sure seems like the social media giant is far from being neutral in India. We should know more once the company clarifies as to why the hashtag was blocked in India especially since the Government of India did not request it. View the full article

  7. Election Commission (EC) is badass this year. They're banning people left, right and centre for good reason. Certain politicians have (ahem) a history of saying offensive and hurtful things. Remember the guy who blamed horniness of young men on street noodles? While saying whatever they like is usually admissible but during the election campaign, there are certain rules mandated by the EC that need to be followed. These rules have been undermined for years. However, this year in light of extensive campaigns and more access, courtesy social media, Election Commission has been proactive and we really appreciate them for it. Here is a list of ridiculous things that politicians said that got them banned for a short period, but that is also something. 1. Called the Muslim League a “green virus” that “caused the partition of the country” Yogi Adityanath, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader who is currently the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, made this comment among others in a speech that referred to the Muslim League a virus that “spread across the country to the extent that it caused the partition of the country". Adding fuel to the fire, he also said that the opposition party, Congress is “infected with the virus” and that “the Congress government used to serve biryani to terrorists and Modiji's army sends bullets and bombs their way,” which basically suggests calling around 14% of the Indian population a “green virus”. The EC had issued a 72-hour campaigning ban on him. 2. Commented on the opponent's underwear colour Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan is contesting in Rampur against his BJP opponent Jaya Prada, a former member of his own party, in a speech said, “I brought her to Rampur. You are a witness that I did not allow anyone to touch her body. It took you 17 years to identify her real face but I got to know in 17 days that she wears khaki underwear.” BJP Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj compared it to the mythological character Draupadi being disrobed in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. But, more importantly, this comment triggered a response from the National Commission for Women, whose chairperson Rekha Sharma is requested the EC to bar him from contesting the election entirely. He too was issued a 72-hour ban for making comments considered “sexist and derogatory”. 3. Threatened Muslims to vote in her favour Sultanpur candidate and Union Minister Maneka Gandhi said she would win regardless. However, if Muslims didn't help her, she “will not feel good, because then there is a bitter feeling.” She also said, “If Muslims come for some work after that I will think, "why bother". She also said the most ironical statement considering her name is Gandhi, “We are not Mahatma Gandhi's children to keep giving without getting anything in return”. EC banned her from polling for 48 hours. It had issued a similar ban before to Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati after she asked Muslims to vote for her party instead of Congress to help them defeat the BJP. These are only a few of the things that have come to the limelight. What other ridiculous things have you heard during the election campaign?

  12. A bridge providing the main road link between China and North Korea is to be closed ?temporarily? while workers on the North side carry out maintenance, Beijing announced Friday. Photo: AFP file BEIJING: A bridge providing the main road link between China and North Korea is to be closed ?temporarily? while workers on the North side carry out maintenance, Beijing announced Friday. Some 70 percent of trade between the Asian neighbours is conducted in the northeastern Chinese city of Dandong, connected to North Korea by the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge. ?The bridge will be closed temporarily because the DPRK (North Korean) side needs to carry out some repair and maintenance work,? Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters at a regular news briefing on Friday. The closure would take place within ?days,? Geng said, without specifying any timeframe for the work to be completed and the bridge re-opened. China is North Korea?s largest trading partner, but it has backed a series of United Nations sanctions against Pyongyang over its nuclear and missile activities, straining ties between the Cold War-era allies. US President Donald Trump has urged his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to use his economic leverage to exert more pressure on the pariah state in the hopes it might abandon its nuclear weapons programme. However, Beijing this week condemned as ?wrong? fresh US sanctions that targeted North Korean shipping interests as well as Chinese companies that do business with the North.
