  4. We’ve all been here before. All those nights of doom scrolling, binge watching and eating finally led you to crack. For some reason, late night guilt has this strange ability to inspire working out again. But you haven't been able to, no matter how hard you tried. It gets frustrating and demotivating till it ends up becoming another vicious cycle for us to add to our laundry list of things to feel guilty about. From trying the latest fads to the trendiest diets, we try everything to get back on track. But it isn’t easy, is it? We often get ahead of ourselves in the process of returning to working out. If you’re like me, chances are you’ve been on and off the fitness bandwagon ever since the pandemic hit. Probably even before that. I tried my first workout after several months and it was excruciating to say the least. More often than not I found myself huffing and panting away at the slightest of movements. Lying miserable in a pool of sweat, cursing myself for trying to workout. I wondered why returning to working out after a break sucked so much. 1. Body Is Weaker Than You Remember It didn’t always hurt this bad. Squats, pullups and pushups used to be my bread and butter, easily breezing through several sets with ease. But now, I can barely make my way through what used to be my warmup. Almost as if my body was hell bent on finding a new way to hurt with every movement I did. © Istock 2. Stressed About Returning To Workout Sometimes it’s not the workout that kills you, but the thoughts that you keep you from it. I’ve noticed myself getting stressed out by thoughts of having to work out again. It becomes a loop of thoughts where I’m stressed about working out but I’m also not working out because I’m stressed. It’s important to remember that the first few days will provide you the momentum to stick to your commitment. © Istock 3. Doesn’t Feel The Same When you’ve seen yourself at what you consider your ‘peak’, all other versions seem to fail. To the extent that we curse ourselves for whatever we’re able to do despite not having worked out in ages. It's such an unfortunate way of thinking that many of us fall prey to. I'm guilty of it as well. Instead of motivating us to our end goal, such thoughts can often prevent us from persisting with our workouts and make us feel even worse. You’re valid at all shapes and stages of your fitness journey. © Istock 4. Improper Nutrition Those late night food orders come at a price, especially if cheat days become a daily occurrence. Constantly eating junk foods leaves me feeling lethargic and bloated. A diet of fast food is poor fuel for our bodies to work with, and your first day back is going to be a reality check for you. © Istock 5. Unfair Targets More than anything else, we’ve to be true to ourselves and be realistic about our goals with fitness. For most people, looking like a member of the Avengers cast might be a dream, but it’s not realistically achievable for most ordinary people. These celebrities are actors who are paid to look the part of a superhero, which is why many celebrities often lose that body mass when they’re not shooting. Set kinder, more realistic expectations with yourself, and revisit them to ensure you’re on track. © Istock Fitness is a lifestyle. And it’s one that you can curate to your best interests.
