  1. We talk about things like the athletes' determination that takes them places. And if we are feeling really generous, we might touch upon the contributions of their coaches and the equal amount of work their have put in behind the success of their apprentice. Having said that, ever since I covered the stories of Special Olympians like Dinal Jain and Ankush Saha for a dedicated docu-series: 'Beyond Victory' , I realised exactly how important it is to let the world know about the contributions of the parents of the sportspersons who made the nation proud by excelling in their sport of choice. It is imperative that their role, their sacrifices for the betterment of their talented children, are highlighted. Why? Because of stories like this: When the 30-year-old, 800-m Asian Athletics Championships gold medal winner, Gomathi Marimuthu stepped onto the podium to embrace her win and the recognition to go with it, the only thing that was probably going through her mind was gratitude. Congrats #GomathiMarimuthu You make us proud pic.twitter.com/TaCGAR5wRh — Naveen.M (@NaveenFilmmaker) April 23, 2019 Gratitude for her late father, who did everything within his capabilities and then some, to watch his daughter realise her dreams but could not be around to experience the joy and excitement when she finally did. After winning the Asian gold, Marimuthu went down the memory lane, remembering all the hardships her family had to go through on a daily basis just to make her better at what she wanted to do, by a tiny margin than how she was the previous day. "When I used to do sports, my father had a leg ailment and he was unable to walk. He had a two-wheeler and that was a big deal for us back then. We did not have good bus facility to go to the city, there was no electricity in my town and the roads weren't good either," said the athlete in a press conference after the win. "If I woke up at 4 a.m., I could catch the 4.30 bus. So my father would wake me up at 4, sharp, putting an alarm. If my mother was not feeling well, my father only would give me water, boil milk... all these things he would only do." "I miss my father. Since I was into sports, and we didn't have much food, he kept aside some for me and ate cattle feed for himself. I can never forget that one day,” she said as tears rolled down her cheeks. "If only my father was around today, I consider him to be like God." Look at this incredible run! Gomathi Marimuthu of India won 800m Gold at Asian Championships in Doha. Sadly no one to even hug/congratulate this 30-yr-old daughter of farmer from a village near Tiruchi. She picks & waves the Indian Flag herself. That is patriotism! Jai Hind!! pic.twitter.com/VqTkJJ3dLQ — Lt Gen Satish Duað®ð³ (@TheSatishDua) April 25, 2019 Very little to no food, bad transportation facilities, health and financial issues at home, no electricity but sheer determination to become better every single day and a Gold medal to prove it. That's Gomathi Marimuthu's story and her father's legacy and it could not have been any better.
  2. PUBG Mobile is back in the news again. No one got arrested this time, but sadly two people lost their lives as they were run over by a train while playing the game near the railway tracks. Officials said that the incident happened at Khatkali Bypass in Hingoli, which is over 570 kilometres from Mumbai. The two men, Nagesh Gore and Swapnil Annapurne, were playing PUBG near the railway tracks. They got run over by the Hyderabad-Ajmer train. © PUBG Mobile The bodies of the two men were found late at night by the locals living in the vicinity. The officials have noted that an accidental death report has been registered at Hingoli police station. Also, this isn't the first negative report about PUBG Mobile this month. The game has been hitting the headlines since the beginning of the year for all the wrong reasons. Recently, the Rajkot police even arrested 10 people who were playing the game in public after the ban.
  3. While revamping utility and public structures has been the need of the hour, the New Delhi Railway Station can't be left untouched for long. Just a month ago, Mathura Railway Station got an absolutely new look and now it's time for Delhi to literally shine. The station was given an artsy feel, rich in culture and heritage and now every time we're catching a train from there, we'd be afraid to miss it, because it's done up quite elaborately and beautifully. The station building looks quite vibrant with some colourful patterns strewn across, with wall art and geometrical designs all over the ceilings. It really looks like we're amidst a colourful little cultural village. The station has also upgraded its public facilities like LED lights, escalators and LCD displays, all over. © Twitter The station will be equipped with solar panels for deriving energy from them and it'll be kept clean throughout. Well, Delhi isn't the only station that has been revamped. Apart from Mathura, there is also Haridwar, Jaipur and Lonavla. They've all been beatified and upgraded just as Delhi and Mathura. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted about the development of the station: बदलता भारत, बदलतॠरà¥à¤²à¤µà¥à¤ सà¥à¤µà¤¿à¤§à¤¾à¤¯à¥à¤, सà¥à¤µà¤à¥à¤à¤¤à¤¾ à¤à¤° सà¥à¤à¤¦à¤°à¥à¤¯ सॠभरा नठदिलà¥à¤²à¥ रà¥à¤²à¤µà¥ सà¥à¤à¥à¤¶à¤¨ à¤à¤¾ नया à¤à¤à¤°à¥à¤·à¤ रà¥à¤ª यातà¥à¤°à¤¿à¤¯à¥à¤ à¤à¥ à¤à¤ विशà¥à¤µà¤¸à¥à¤¤à¤°à¥à¤¯ रà¥à¤²à¤µà¥ सà¥à¤à¥à¤¶à¤¨ à¤à¤¾ à¤à¤¹à¤¸à¤¾à¤¸ à¤à¤°à¤¾ रहा हà¥à¥¤ pic.twitter.com/rUiirbwjDj — Piyush Goyal (@PiyushGoyal) 14 March 2019 The new look of the Railway station went down pretty well with most people and they took to Twitter to praise the efforts made by the Ministry of Railways and the Indian Railway Station Development Corporation. Or you can just check out these pictures here: © Twitter © Twitter © Twitter © Twitter © Twitter The Indian Railway Station Development Corporation (IRSDC), which is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for revamping and developing such structures, will invest about Rs 7,500 crore, for redeveloping close to 50 railway stations across India. Simultaneously with that, they will also have a beatification drive alongside, which will entail paintings and art along the premises of the station. We're glad the Indian Railways are making an effort to revamp old stations and after airports, this was pretty much the need of the hour.
  4. Sarvatra Sarvottam Suraksha- Omnipresent Security of the Highest Level. Bharat Mata Ki Jai!- Hail Mother India. With this motto and war-cry as the primary ideal and an ethos that includes pursuit for excellence, leading from the front, zero-error and launching surprise attacks on intruders with speed, stealth and precision, the National Security Guard (NSG) Commandos or the Black Cats (named after their black uniform and gear) of the Indian Special Forces, are one of the most fierce warriors. Not only are these men great warriors, but they are also fine tactical athletes of their own kind. The NSG was officially established in 1986, in an effort to create an elite force to counter any terrorist activities within the boundaries of our country. Like every branch of our Special Forces, the NSG has also developed gradually and their physical and mental fitness requirements have evolved from the time it got established. I am fortunate enough to be good friends with a few individuals who have been and are still serving in the Special Forces; and hence by writing this piece, I hope fellow Indians realize how gruelling the NSG training can be in order to stand a chance to protect our beloved country from within. Due to reasons pertaining to national security, not everything can be revealed but I have tried my best to portray the fitness requirements of the Black Cats after interviewing a few Black Cat Commandos. © Defencelover “The NSG is a volunteer arm and it has two parts: The Special Action Group consists of commandos selected from the Army and the Special Ranger Group consists of commandos from the Central and State Police Forces. Out of thousands of candidates, only 0.3% get selected to serve in the NSG. It is a very competitive procedure”, said Commando A (Name undisclosed). But why is the selection process so aggressive? It is mainly because the candidates are expected to change and transform themselves from soldiers or police personnel to Commandos in a very short time, and this procedure is physically and mentally taxing. “Candidates are not only expected to attain a minimum of “excellent” fitness performance as per the regular army standards (these include running, long jump, chin-ups, pushups, rope climbing and sit-ups; with and without combat gear), but also expected to become independent leaders by demonstrating excellent personality development and soft-skills.”, Commando A added. © Defencelover “The roles of the NSG include security of VIPs, room intervention and combating any and every sorts of terrorist activities within the country. During the counter-terror operation of 26/11 at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, the commandos had to perform room intervention and make a quick decision as to when to shoot or when to hold fire after breaking open every room-door. There could have been terrorists or only innocent guests or both in the room and decision making was crucial.”, said Commando B. “During the initial three-month training, commandos are not given more than 2-3 hours of sleep. I was made to stand for hours while wearing heavy loads on my back” said Commando C. We all know how important sleep is to us and how it helps us perform daily activities with ease. But we can't even imagine how much willpower it would require to ace physical tests, to learn martial arts and to be precise with target shooting while being sleep deprived! The NSG commandos are also well-trained in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), Pekiti-Tirsia Kali (A Filipino martial art) and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by qualified martial arts trainers. © YouTube If you thought that this was the end of their training, then let me add that after being a member of the NSG, commandos are tested either monthly or quarterly to make sure their skills and fitness levels remain up to the mark. Besides, they undergo multiple simulations for preparation and real-life projects that civilians never hear of. In 2018, the US Special Forces (Green Berets) conducted a joint drill with the NSG in Kolkata and were very impressed with the drills carried out in the Metro Railways by the Black Cats. There is no doubt that India is in safe and strong hands indeed.
  5. While talking about trains, one thing that often pops up in our minds is Narendra Modi's long fetched promise of Bullet Trains. And guess what, he actually has kept it. Well, not exactly a Bullet Train but a desi version of it. Well, that is Train 18 aka Vande Bharat Express. With its Bullet Train-inspired design and super cool features, the driverless train will be flagged off by PM Modi on February 15 and will cover the route between New Delhi and Agra replacing the veteran Shatabdi Express. As per the results from the trial runs as of now, Train 18 can clock up a speed of over 180 kmph making it the fastest ever train of the Indian Railways. Being a desi product (Yes! Make In India, guys) and built at a cost of Rs 100 crore, this train is making Rs 88,000 crore India loaned from Japan seems like a total rip-off. According to a report by The Hindu, here are some of the cool features that the Vande Bharat Express comes packed with that really give it a futuristic feel. 1. Aerodynamically designed driver cabins at both ends for quicker turn-around at destinations 2. Alternate coaches are motorised to ensure even distribution of power and faster acceleration or deceleration 3. Regenerative braking system to save power © BCCL 4. Inter-connected, fully sealed gangways 5. Automatic doors with retractable footsteps 6. Onboard Wi-Fi and infotainment © Twitter 7. GPS-based passenger information system 8. Modular toilets with bio-vacuum systems 9. Rotational seats which can be aligned in the direction of travel (executive class) © Twitter 10. Roller blinds and diffused LED lighting 11. Disabled-friendly toilets 12. Emergency talk-back units to contact train crew 13. CCTVs in all coaches for safe and secure travel in numbers The report also mentioned that the approximate cost to build the train is around Rs 100 crore, and if the train runs at 200 kmph as per the report, then it sounds like a fairly decent deal. The makers of the train - Integral Coach Factory, Chennai is believed to have around five Train 18s in the pipeline and the time taken to conceive, design and develop the train is said to be around 18 months. All in all, Vande Bharat Express being a driverless train packed with other mind-blowing features is going to be an exceptional experience and we can't wait to get aboard.

  7. I don't know how to stress this enough - people really suck. Everyone would complain about how India is not advancing and then would destroy any new thing that is introduced for the betterment of the country. Case in point - the fastest train in the country - Train 18, which is scheduled to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 29, has already had people hurl stones at it for no apparent reason. According to a senior official, the train was pelted with stones yesterday during a trial run between Delhi and Agra, and it ended in a broken window. Wow, people are so great. Sudhanshu Manu, General Manager of the Integral Coach Factory, tweeted, “Train 18 running at 180 km/h between Delhi and Agra at this time... Srinivas, the Chief Design Engineer of ICF is in the cab, they touched 181 kmh for record sake... Some vandal threw a stone breaking a glass, hope we nab him”. This isn't even a first shameful train related incident. Last year, the Mumbai-Goa Tejas Express got a similar treatment with people stealing headphones that were provided to them and overall damaging the train on its maiden run. What's the point, then? I really want to know what that person gained by smashing a window of Train 18. It doesn't even make sense. Everyone is disappointed, everyone is confused and everyone understands my point - we don't deserve anything. Ppl say that India is a Nation of Uneducated, Filthy & Uncouth people but I retorted but today it seems they were always right Stone pelted at India's fastest train, Train 18 during a trial run from Delhi to Agra. India's first engine-less semi-high speed train, Train 18, has been vandalized by stone pelting even before it's inauguration & first run. 8. One person's presence of mind might have just saved the lives of a lot of people and it's a lesson for everyone to not always be so involved in themselves and always be aware about their surroundings. Krishna Poojary, a 53-year-old man hailing from Karnataka has probably now become a hero for so many people who owe him their lives. He's a daily wage worker and despite having a weak leg, he ran 3km to inform authorities about a crack in the train tracks which saved thousands of lives. Because of his leg, he was advised by doctors to go on walks daily in order to strengthen his leg since he could not afford to seek further medical help. His walk last Saturday became quite memorable, with a happy ending, thankfully. Basically, while walking at the Brahmasthana Nagabana area in Korangrapady, he stumbled upon a crack in the train tracks and while he was figuring out what to do, a train passed, and the crack became even wider and more dangerous. © TOI As soon as he realized this was tragedy waiting to happen, he started running to get help and it had to be quick, before another train passes through. He immediately took off and ended up running 3km to find railway officials. While talking to TOI, he said, “I usually take a stroll for around 2km. I was walking near the tracks around 6.45am when I happened to see the crack. Soon a train passed by. I could only think of rushing to the officials.” © Pexels After his alert, two trains were halted until the matter could be fixed. After that, he led railway engineers to the spot and they fixed the crack and only after that the trains were allowed to pass. Not all heroes wear capes hasn't been truer, tbh. What a thing to do! He even put so much physical strain on himself, even though he was already in pain. He said, “I have severe pain in the leg. But I am glad I could be of help to people.”
  9. If you are over six feet and trying to pack on muscle mass, until and unless you are genetically gifted, I feel your pain. You see your shorter counterparts lift less and eat less and still make better progress than you. You might think or even get comments like you are not working hard enough or you are not eating properly. Despite all these things being in place, it can get very hard for tall dudes to put on muscle. Here's how you need to lay down your food and gym work. The Big Presses No matter which exercise you do, whether it is a press or pull, your range of motion is going to be much longer because of your longer limbs. This translates into more stress on your joints and increased time under tension (TUT). Most people try to set up a very wide grip on the presses to counter this situation but this is not the solution and going super wide puts undue stress on the shoulders. Always use a grip that's shoulder width wide. Another way to go about it is to use dumbbells instead of barbells as barbells put a lot less stress on your shoulders, elbows and even the wrist. This reduces the risk of injury because of the fact that the head of your humerus is able to rotate externally which reduces the chances of impingement. Pull Movements © Pixabay Pulling movements like lat pulleys and chin-ups should also be performed slightly differently as longer arms make vertical pulls different for taller people. The common technique performed is to keep pulling until your chest touches the bar. This might be okay for not so tall people but not for tall people, the lat attachment is generally high up on the humerus. So, tall people who have more space between the lat attachment and their elbows, the full range of motion is achieved before your pull all the way down or up and touch your chest to the bar. Pulling anymore than that will involve your upper back and traps and make them the primary movers, which isn't great if you are looking to develop your back while doing the given exercise. A better idea according to me would to not perform the full range of motion and stop a few inches off when you feel the contraction instead of going by the rule of touching your chest to the bar. Isolation Exercises © Pixabay Lanky arms and legs are not the best gifts you can get when you want to put on tons of muscle mass. Shorter people have an advantage when it comes to lifting heavy weights, which in turn, helps them acquire strength quicker and be on relatively safer side. Having shorter limbs also means that adding 1 kg of muscle to the arms or legs will much more prominently show compared to spreading that mass over a foot more space, like a tall individual has to. Keeping this thing in mind, you should try to utilize every tool that you can to maximize your output from training. Now, don't get me wrong here, I am not asking you to skip the big three but they should be the bread and butter of your massing routine. Direct isolation work can do wonders and is underrated when it comes to making body composition changes. Exercises like flyes, lateral raises and extensions are all great as accessories. Do the right thing, and save room for both heavy work and lots of light lifting. Now go do some bicep curls. 10. The desire to get fit, lean and muscular is making so many people lift weights everyday. Weight training can make you bigger, stronger and powerful. But most people are solely chasing aesthetics, lifting in the 10-15 rep range everyday, with no progress in their strength and inevitably negligible progress in the their physique. If you believe that that lifting heavy will make you fat like an overweight powerlifter, you could not be far from truth. Lifters like Larry Wheels (enhanced) and Dr Layne Norton (natural) testify that you can look great and have exceptional strength at the same time. It is worth mentioning that if you are a natural lifter, focusing on strength becomes even more important. Why? Because it is the only anabolic tool you have as a natty. Weight training is merely a stimulus for your body. Someone on steroids can grow even by doing body weight workouts due to excess of anabolic hormones in their system. But once you are past the newbie gains, you need to lift heavy and heavier over time to force muscle growth. Benefits Of Training For Size & Strength 1) Greater Motivation To Work Out Muscle building is an extremely slow process. You are not going to grow session to session every week. But you can increase your strength even if it is just by a pound every week. This makes training more exciting and pumping. 2) Do Not Just Look Like A Superhero, Feel It! Having big muscles feels good, but what feels even better is having the ability to push/pull heavy loads. Car is broke? Not an issue if your glutes and quads have enough strength to push it. The neighbourhood chick needs help in shifting? The stronger dude has the edge while the shredded guy is looking for help. Now that we know the benefits of this training style, let's get down to business and learn how to do it. #1 Track Your Lifts © YouTube If you are one of those people who lift intuitively according to the 'feel', you are never going to increase your muscle mass or strength unless you are a genetic freak. In order to take your strength to the next level, you need to know where it currently is. And for that my friend you need to track your lifts. It is not required that you track numbers in every exercise but in compound lifts such as bench press, rows, overhead press, squats, deadlifts, etc. Note down how many sets, reps, or weights you lifted and if possible also mention how many reps you could do more. I find using an app an unnecessary fuss; a notepad works best. #2 The Strong Lifts The Bench Press, Barbell Rows, Squats and Deadlifts are the four primary lifts where you will be lifting in the 5-8 rep range to elicit maximum muscle fibre recruitment. Not to mention the strength increment in these lifts will also have a carry-over on all other pushing and pulling movements. #3 The Hypertrophy Lifts Apart from the stronglifts, we will also be lifting in the 8-12 hypertrophy rep range to cause mechanical damage and also provide enough volume for growth. These lifts will include all other compound movements such as incline/decline bench press, dumbbell rows, Arnold press, leg press, and Romanian deadlifts. #4 The Pump Lifts © Generation Iron At last we will also be lifting in the 15-25 rep range chasing the pump and burn. When you perform high reps with shorter rest periods, lactic acid and blood accumulates in muscle tissues creating anabolic surroundings. In an experiment, Dr. David Gundermann from the University of Tampa, isolated muscle tissues and put them with lactic acid. And surprisingly they showed growth response. The exercises to perform in this rep range will primarily be single joint movements like cable flyes, cable curls, side raise, reverse flys, etc. This is how you can accommodate different rep ranges in your training plan throughout the week. 12. The success of 'Baaghi 2' took many by surprise. Tiger Shroff rose as an actor, who did what many could not, and ruled the box office. The film was loved by millions and people were shook seeing Tiger's action-packed avatar. The movie not only earned big bucks at the box office but became the biggest opener of 2018, defeating Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movies in the process. The CGI work in 'Baaghi 2' and Tiger's incredible stunts created a buzz for all the right reasons. There is no doubt that the actor owns the action space and there is no one who can compete with him. © FoxStarHindi Not many know this, but the actor worked really hard for every stunt and action scene. Tiger is trained in martial arts and most of the times, perform his stunts on his own. He is not one of those who uses stuntmen or body doubles, now how cool is that? For the second installment of the popular franchise, the actor had undergone intense physical training. For the film, the actor learned various forms of martial arts, gymnastics and took special weapon training lessons as well. Believe it or not, the actor shot for the action sequences for 78 days and trained for 476 hours and of course, the end result was remarkable. © Instagram If this was his preparation for 'Baaghi 2', one can only expect it to get more intense for the third part. With an aim to outdo its previous installment, director Ahmed Khan has decided to send Tiger to a military boot camp in Syria, where he will be receiving lessons on artillery training.
