  1. 2018 ended on a horrible note for the former Indian cricketer Jacob Martin, who battled against time in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in critical condition following a road accident on 28th December and was put on a ventilator as his family felt severely short of money to continue with the expensive treatment. At that time, the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) sanctioned an aide worth Rs 5 Lakh out of the Benevolent Fund whilst former skipper Sourav Ganguly also showed his support. However, the greatest gesture was shown by cricketer Krunal Pandya who gave a blank cheque to Sanjay Patel, the former secretary of the BCCI and the Baroda Cricket Association while reportedly saying, “Sir, please fill up whatever is needed, but nothing less than Rs 1 lakh". With the good wishes of the fans of the cricketer and those of Indian cricket, Martin was successfully discharged from the ICU after spending almost a month under 'critical' status. Having said that, a pair of ruptured lungs and a failing liver takes a lot of care and treatment to get over. When the injuries are so grave, the rate at which the cash flows can reduce the wealthiest of families to mediocrity. In such testing times, former Indian opener KL Rahul emerged as the knight in the shining armour who reportedly made the biggest individual donation to the Martin family. Jacob's wife while having confirmed receiving the funds from the batsman refused to reveal the exact amount on the request of Rahul himself but Mumbai Mirror confirms that Rahul's hefty donation was the greatest made by anyone. “A big thanks to Rahul and everyone who has helped,” an emotional Jacob Martin expressed to the newspaper as the cricketers of the past and the present have come together to stand by the ailing athlete. Ever since India's Test series against Australia, KL Rahul has found himself to be off in his form before getting suspended for being a part of a controversial episode of a chat show alongside teammate and best-buddy Hardik Pandya. It can be excruciatingly difficult for an athlete to life through a stint of bad form with the public constantly hating on them for their deeds beyond the field and for Rahul to show up for a cause so noble right now, says a million things about how good the cricketer is at heart.

  3. Thousands of Google employees across the globe, including India, walked out of their offices on Thursday to protest the company's handling of sexual misconduct cases. Dubbed the 'Google Walkout,' the demonstrations followed the storm stirred by a New York Times investigation. It details the multi-million dollar severance packages for accused executives and a lack of transparency in dealing with such cases, over the years. View this post on Instagram A post shared by kyla_kelly (@kyla_kelly) on Nov 1, 2018 at 11:29am PDT The employees have demanded key changes in the company's stance, which could finally help the victims sue their harassers. Among other issues raised by protestors are unequal pay and a lack of gender representation. Google's chief executive Sundar Pichai has supported the staff's right to protest. "Yesterday, we let Googlers know that we are aware of the activities planned for Thursday and that employees will have the support they need if they wish to participate," he said. "I understand the anger and disappointment that many of you feel," he said in an all-staff email. "I feel it as well, and I am fully committed to making progress on an issue that has persisted for far too long in our society… and, yes, here at Google, too." A Twitter feed titled @googlewalkout has documented the movement at Google's international offices. Google staff in Singapore, Zurich, London, Tokyo, Berlin and New York were among the first to take part. The first of many coordinated #GoogleWalkout protests has begun - this is at the firm's office in Singapore. (Pic via https://t.co/h44RZYGGHV ) pic.twitter.com/QeFgmPbHnN — Dave Lee (@DaveLeeBBC) November 1, 2018 Google confirmed to PTI that about 150 employees participated in the protests in India. The tech giant has offices in four locations in the country, namely Hyderabad, Gurgaon, Mumbai and Bangalore. Google has struggled to deal with the reaction generated by the New York Times report. Top executives have promised in a mail that the company is "dead serious" towards workplace safety and creating an inclusive environment. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Thames Sookpranee (@thamess) on Nov 1, 2018 at 11:21am PDT At least 48 other employees have been sacked for sexual harassment without receiving a payout, Pichai told staff. He admitted the New York Times' report had been "difficult to read". Staff involved in Thursday's walkout were supposed to leave a note on their desks telling colleagues: "I'm not at my desk because I'm walking out with other Googlers and contractors to protest sexual harassment, misconduct, lack of transparency, and a workplace culture that's not working for everyone." Other formal demands from Google's management are as follows: • A commitment to end pay and opportunity inequality • A publicly disclosed sexual harassment transparency report • A clear, uniform, globally inclusive process for reporting sexual misconduct safely and anonymously • The elevation of the chief diversity officer to answer directly to the CEO, and make recommendations directly to the board of directors • The appointment of an employee representative to the board • An end to forced arbitration in cases of harassment and discrimination for all current and future employees More on this as the story develops. 4. Hailed as Bollywood's most prolific underdog-turned-mega-star, critically acclaimed actor Irrfan Khan is reportedly all set to return to the country post his cancer treatment in London. Last seen in the movie 'Karwaan' which released in August, Irrfan had given a miss to the movie's promotion, since he had to move to London for his treatment. Earlier this year in March, Irrfan had announced that he had been diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour. Soon after, he left for London to undergo treatment for his condition. RSVP Movies However, reports have been circulating that the actor will be returning home post-Diwali after his treatment. It is also being suggested that Irrfan might start shooting for 'Hindi Medium 2' post his return, later this year. HT has quoted Irrfan's spokesperson as saying, “The story floating about Irrfan starting Hindi Medium 2 shoot in December are all based on speculations. However, there is a possibility of him returning to India after Diwali”. T-Series The update comes as a happy news for his fans and well-wishers who had been waiting to hear about the status of his recovery since the last statement, which had come out in August. Earlier in August Irrfan had said, “I've seen life from a completely different angle. You sit down and you see the other side and that's fascinating. I'm engaged on a journey”, after receiving four rounds of chemotherapy as part of his treatment. The diagnosis had forced Irrfan to back out from making an appearance in the Amazon series 'Gormint'. However, with this latest update, we can now look forward to watching him set the screen on fire once again.
