Imam-ul-Haq, the Pakistan batsman, hit two centuries in the first Test against Australia at Rawalpindi. While striking 157 in the first innings, he backed up his century with an unbeaten 111 in the second, as the game ended in a dreary draw at the Pindi Cricket Stadium. Throughout the first Test, the pitch's condition was under close scrutiny, with many former Pakistan cricketers, as well as spectators, criticising the surface's lifelessness. The hosts bowled out Australia for 459 after Pakistan declared their first innings on 476/4; however, by the time Pakistan came to bat again, there wasn't much time left in the game to force a result. Before both captains shook hands, Imam and fellow opener Abdullah Shafique (136*) stayed unbeaten as Pakistan struck 252/0. View this post on Instagram The pitch in Rawalpindi was also criticised by Australia skipper Pat Cummins and opener David Warner. In a press conference on Thursday, though, Imam defended the pitch and said that they had taken all ten wickets on the surface. “Obviously when it’s a five-day Test everyone anticipates for a result. But when we go to Australian conditions, they don’t make pitches consulting us but make it according to their will so I think we should see our strength and should live up to our strength,” said Imam. Imam-ul-Haq has dismissed the debate surrounding the Rawalpindi pitch, insisting that the pitch was the same for both teams ⤵ #PAKvAUS — ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) March 11, 2022 “I think the Rawalpindi Test was played well as we managed to get all 10 wickets." Australia’s ongoing tour of Pakistan is their first in the last 24 years, thereby making it a historic event for the hosting side. However, due to the terribly built pitch at Rawalpindi, everyone (other than the two-time centurion Imam, of course) was left with a bad taste in their mouth. Watching at the atrocious pitch conditions, even the former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer expressed that instead of worrying about sluggish over-rates, the ICC should focus on eliminating 'dead pitches,' which are the biggest threat to the game's longest format. I find it amusing when Test matches get over inside 4 days yet teams lose WTC points for overrate. The biggest threat to test cricket is not overrate. Tests rarely go to day 5 anyway nowadays. The biggest threat to test cricket are dead pitches. Dead pitch = Dead game. #PAKvAUS — Wasim Jaffer (@WasimJaffer14) March 7, 2022 Upon the conclusion of the first match, the International Cricket Council (ICC) judged the Pindi Cricket Stadium "below average" and docked it one demerit point. Ranjan Madugalle, the ICC match referee for the Test series highlighted, in his report, that the pitch did not favour the batters and bowlers equally, since it "favoured the former more than the latter." A dead pitch Rawalpindi Test? This guy has a request to curator of Pindi Cricket Stadium! #PAKvAUS pic.twitter.com/z1467soK7B — Arfa Feroz Zake (@ArfaSays_) March 8, 2022 For a rolling five-year period, the demerit points are active. When a venue receives five demerit points (or crosses the threshold), it is barred from holding international cricket matches for a period of one year. If the venue receives 10 demerit points, it will be barred from holding international cricket matches for a period of 24 months. View the full article

It has been over two years since the time the captain of the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli had scored his most recent century back when Bangladesh toured India and the first pink-ball Test was played in the subcontinent in November 2019. Since then, the batter, who remains one of the elite ones in terms of potential and technique, has failed to convert all those experiences and finesses into three-digit scores for himself. To make matters worse, during the ongoing Test series between India and South Africa, Kohli’s has gotten dismissed at 35 and 18 runs in the first and second innings respectively, thereby making very little impact on the game as an individual. View this post on Instagram For the second consecutive time in the series, Kohli got dismissed in the same fashion. By giving up an edged ball right into the hands of one of the men standing behind the stumps. Considering the fact that it was the first ball Kohli played after returning from the lunch break, the shot selection of the batter was put in question by a lot of people, including the former Indian skipper, Sunil Gavaskar. Trying to get inside Kohli’s head, Gavaskar said that the way the current captain moved his bat, it felt as it if was a “loose shot” and going for it was arguably a bad decision, especially because it was the first delivery of the second session of the day and the common approach is for the batters to defend a few balls, give themselves enough time and settle in for a long inning. View this post on Instagram Reiterating the fact that Kohli remains one of the most experienced players of Test cricket not just in his team but also all around the world, Gavaskar sounded puzzled thinking about whatever was going inside the mind of the 33-year old. The ‘Little Master’ speculated that maybe Kohli was in a rush to put up a big score on the board as soon as possible before declaring their innings and allowing themselves a better shot at gaining a 1-0 lead in the series with a day and a half to spare. This analysis makes sense as out of the 18 runs that Kohli scored in the second inning, 16 of them came from boundaries and the cricketer did look in a hurry to make runs. View this post on Instagram Nonetheless, Team India still look to be in control of the match as they managed to dismiss South Africa’s four batters by the time gameplay ended on the penultimate day of the match. Ahead of Day 5, Team India is leading by 210 runs. View the full article
