After Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings dominated against KL Rahul’s Kings XI Punjab backed by a dominating batting performance by CSK openers Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis, they have moved up the points table to take the number six spot. However, it is KXIP that are now at the bottom of the table, thanks to a horrible record ever since the 2020 season began. View this post on InstagramA post shared by (@kxipofficial) Having played a total of five matches till date, Punjab has only managed to win one match - against Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore in which their skipper played an unbeaten 132-run innings to become the highest-run scoring Indian in the league. The franchise mentored by one of the most well-regarded former Indian coaches in Anil Kumble (who also happens to be the only Indian head coach this season), has somehow managed to plummet right to the bottom of the barrel, being the only team to have scored just two points. A look at the Points Table after Match 18 of #Dream11IPL pic.twitter.com/2RZvgU70KB — IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) October 4, 2020 What makes the 1-4 losing record further incredible is the fact that the KXIP roster boasts some of the finest players from the Indian locker room. KL Rahul: View this post on InstagramA post shared by (@kxipofficial)KXIP skipper KL Rahul has managed to keep form despite the pandemic halting cricket for all Indian players for months. He is miles ahead of all the other batsmen in the league in terms of consistency and scoring. With 302 runs, he is currently the leading scorer of the tournament and in the first position in the race for the Orange Cap. Mayank Agarwal: View this post on InstagramA post shared by (@kxipofficial)Rahul’s fellow opener and Team India’s red-ball specialist, Mayank Agarwal proved his worth in the shortest format of the game ever since KXIP’s first match this season when he played a brilliant 89-run knock in a losing battle against Delhi Capitals. With 272 runs, Agarwal is just 30 runs away from his captain in the Orange Cap race. Mohammed Shami: View this post on InstagramA post shared by (@kxipofficial)On the other side of the pitch, KXIP consists of the Men in Blue’s leading pacer in Mohammed Shami, who has been in excellent form for the past year and a half. Having played in five matches this season, Shami is tied with RCB’s Yuzvendra Chahal, DC’s Kagiso Rabada and MI’s Trent Boult for the most number of wickets in the season with eight (although Chahal and Rabada have only played in four matches, each). Despite being one of the original eight franchises to have stuck around the league ever since its inception in 2008, Kings XI Punjab have only managed to make it to the final once in 2014 but have failed to even make it to the playoffs ever since. Last season they were the sixth best team (of the third worst team) in the league. View this post on InstagramA post shared by (@kxipofficial) Kumble had addressed Punjab’s tendency to not do well in the league before the season began in the United Arab Emirates last month: “I think our first goal is to prepare the team to achieve a common purpose, that of winning the IPL. It’s not only about me imparting knowledge. Our intention is to help the players in their careers. I know two months is a short time but at least, we will try and help them, especially (in) building fitness, preparing for a match.”Well, judging by the way things are turning out for the squad, the supporting staff led by big names like Kumble and Jonty Rhodes has clearly failed to achieve their “first goal” itself, then how can they hope to win the title anytime soon? Ever since his debut in 2004, Dale Steyn has managed to enthral cricket fraternity and fans with his steaming fast bowling across formats. Thanks to his extreme pace, ability to swing the ball both ways and commendable accuracy; Steyn has not only established himself as one of the best fast bowlers in the business, but probably South Africa's best ever. If that wasn't enough, Steyn's scary eyes, throbbing veins and a chainsaw celebration have all culminated to brand him as one of the most feared bowlers in modern-day cricket. But, over the years, Steyn's obsession of sprinting in and delivering that ripper of an outswinger has taken a toll over his ageing body. And, the fact that he has struggled to remain fit has often robbed cricket of his priceless duels with opposition batsmen. © Reuters But, on a day when the cricket fraternity and fans were busy relishing the batting genius of young Mayank Agarwal in Melbourne, Steyn quietly went about his business and etched his name in the history books as South Africa's most successful bowler in Tests. Playing in the Boxing Day Test between Pakistan and South Africa in Centurion, the 35-year-old pacer dismissed Fakhar Zaman after forcing an edge off his bat towards the slip cordon in the seventh over of their first innings. In the process, Steyn claimed his 422nd wicket in the longest format which also sent him past Shaun Pollock, whose record had stood since he quit in 2008. With Dale Steyn becoming South Africa's highest Test wicket-taker, watch all the pace ace's wickets against Australia on Aussie soil! pic.twitter.com/zN6tVEH4a7 — cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) December 26, 2018 Steyn's feat came in 89 Tests, at an average of 22.60, while his fellow countryman Pollock averaged 23.11 across 108 Tests. Incidentally, Pollock, owing to his commentating duties, was also available at the ground at the time of Steyn's feat. And, as he was being lifted shoulder-high by his teammates, Pollock gave him a thumbs-up who was reciprocated with the same gesture by Steyn. While Steyn couldn't bag more wickets, especially after his fellow paceman Duanne Olivier claimed impressive figures of 6-37 to skittle Pakistan out for just 181 runs in the first innings, the Proteas veteran garnered plaudits from all corners of the globe for his latest feat.
