Australia registered a comfortable 71-run win over arch-rivals England to clinch their record-extending seventh Women's World Cup on Sunday (April 3). The win was set up by star wicket-keeper batter Alyssa Healy, who has a knack of putting in match-winning performances in big games, who played a knock of 170 in the summit clash. Australia were the favourites to win the trophy but they did it without breaking any sweat and it speaks volumes of how far ahead they are of their opponents in terms of talent across disciplines in the game. Meg Lanning's side wins by 71 runs to secure Australia's seventh World Cup title! #CWC22 — cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) April 3, 2022 Healy ran the show with sublime batting. Her knock of 170 was studded with 26 boundaries and it helped Australia put up a gigantic total of 356 for five from their quota of 50 overs. England, in reply, were bowled out for 285 with Nat Sciver playing a lone battle with an unbeaten century. The whole cricketing fraternity stood up and applauded the dominance that was on display by Meg Lanning's side. Ravichandran Ashwin is one of the few active Indian cricketers who has been vocal about women's cricket on social media. The off-spinner rarely misses a game of cricket and was one of the first from the men's team to lend support to the Indian women's team during their journey in the ongoing Women's World Cup. Ever since the Indian team reached the final of the 2017 Women's World Cup, fans started to show a keen interest in women's cricket. This change also brought opinions that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should introduce a Women's Indian Premier League (IPL) to promote the sport in the country. JUST IN: BCCI has proposed a six-team women's #IPL from 2023. @vijaymirror has more — Cricbuzz (@cricbuzz) March 25, 2022 It took the Indian board five years but they have finally proposed a six-team full-fledged IPL. Ashwin, while answering fans' questions on ESPNCricinfo's Polite Enquiries, revealed that his franchise Rajasthan Royal is 'passionate and excited' about having their own women's IPL team. Ashwin mentioned that when he heard about a possible six-team women's IPL. He had a chat with RR's CEO Jake Lush McCrum and he was looking forward to it. "The other day I was having a chat with the (RR) CEO. I read an article on some six teams possible for the women's IPL. I just wanted to check because there are 10 franchises at this point and Jake was up in the arms. He said, 'Of course! It's going to be something that we are very, very passionate [about] and very, very interested in," Ashwin said. Battle Royale @rajasthanroyals @IamSanjuSamson @yuzi_chahal pic.twitter.com/Jjzjw0Jkoy — Ashwin (@ashwinravi99) March 27, 2022 The 35-year-old further added that he thought about buying a women's IPL team of his own but then decided against it because it is 'too expensive' for his liking. "So I just looked around the corner and said, 'OK, is there an opportunity that I can buy some team?' It's just too expensive for my liking (chuckles) but I'll be extremely thrilled to see what RR does," he added. Fans reacted positively to the news and were excited about the future of women's cricket in India. Women's IPL would be so good! https://t.co/KHAAhLfPo4 — Abinesh (@vel_abinesh) April 1, 2022PBKS RR we've already got 2 teams which are interested in participating ! https://t.co/OlXyeEzMmR — Camlin Oil Pastels (@CamlinTweets) April 1, 2022With each passing day RR Is turning into my favorite team and ASH aana is turning into my favorite player @ashwinravi99 @rajasthanroyals #HallaBol #WIPL https://t.co/bFk7Jh584P — aditya yadav (@imyadavji) April 1, 2022RR women's team What a news to start the day https://t.co/1scNafmE1P — Amme31 #CWC22 (@MegaVyas) April 1, 2022Ash Anna full support to RR this time #HallaBol https://t.co/DphwSLSgHH — Ashwini (@AshuCric07) April 1, 2022Ashwin definitely going to have a great career as a commentator, he loves cricket all over the world, follows domestic cricket also, tweet about that, and so good with words. #RoyalsFamily — PUTIn #RR (@rus_vala) April 1, 2022The Women's IPL is subject to clearance by the BCCI AGM. After Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia showed interest in buying a Women's IPL team, Rajasthan Royals are the latest entrant to put their name forward and it is a great sign for female cricketers in the country as their dream of featuring in a tournament as big as the IPL may finally come true next year. The Indian team suffered a heartbreaking loss to South Africa in their final league game of the ongoing Women's World Cup that ended their campaign on Sunday (March 27). Team India needed to win to qualify for the semis but they fell agonisingly short after the penultimate delivery of the match was called a no-ball by the TV umpire. Deepti Sharma had overstepped by an inch and that cost India dearly in the do-or-die contest. For showing admirable fighting spirit, fans and former cricketers extended their support for the Women in Blue on social media. Ex-India captain Virat Kohli too took to Twitter to react to the women's team exit from the World Cup. Always tough to bow out of a tournament you aim to win but our women's team can hold their heads high. You gave it your all and we are proud of you. — Virat Kohli (@imVkohli) March 28, 2022 Kohli, who himself has tasted heartbreaking losses as captain in ICC global events, said that the team can hold their heads high as they fought with everything they had on the field. "Always tough to bow out of a tournament you aim to win but our women's team can hold their heads high. You gave it your all and we are proud of you," Kohli tweeted. Kohli's emotional post for the women's team left quite a few Indian cricket fans emotional as they reacted to the post on social media. There is a lot that they can teach other. I wish @BCCI takes up their job on this. https://t.co/kXINVN9mCm — Ashu (@ASHUTOSHYASH) March 28, 2022Golden words from sir Virat Kohli...!! https://t.co/7Nd0fhe4UB — Pranav Sri Datta (@PranavSriDatta) March 28, 2022In the match, Deepti had taken a crucial wicket of the second-last ball of the match but she failed to land her foot inside the crease by inches and it was deemed as a no-ball, India were denied the wicket and lost the match on the final ball, bowing out of the tournament. Following the loss, India finished fifth on the points table of the eight-team tournament as the West Indies took the fourth spot as the last semi-finalist. Deepti Sharma to du Preez, no ball, It's Harman once again and du Preez has holed out, have they changed strike? This was tossed up on off and du Preez saw the chance to hit the winning boundary, was looking to loft it wide of long-on, but she dragged it high and pic.twitter.com/wc5QDLUiHF — Live Cricket Master Updater (@MohsinM55415496) March 27, 2022 It was the last World Cup for two of Indian women's cricket stalwarts, captain Mithali Raj and pacer Jhulan Goswami. After the game, Mithali did hint that it might not be the last time fans see her in an Indian jersey on the field. "It would not be appropriate for me to comment anything on that, considering the kind of game we just played and as I said, the emotions are still there. So, it needs to settle down before I could have clarity on that and give an answer to that," Mithali said at the post-match press conference. Admit it, Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami deserved a better farewell. #CWC22 #TeamIndia pic.twitter.com/DmKBm3LAAZ — Female Cricket #CWC22 (@imfemalecricket) March 27, 2022 The duo of Mithali and Goswami may not get their hands on a World Cup title but the team needs them to stay and make the transition easy for the youngsters who will come into the side.
