Former India skipper Virat Kohli’s fallout with former head coach Anil Kumble was one of the biggest controversies in Indian cricket, especially since the turn of the century. The way the Indian spin-bowling legend’s tenure as India head coach came to an end, it left a sour tatste in the mouth of every Indian cricket fan. © Reuters While Kumble resigned citing his “untenable” relationship with the then India captain, Kohli never came out in the open and said anything on the matter. However, it was pretty clear that Kohli had a major problem with Kumble’s working style and they were not on the same page. At the time, several attempts were made to bring about a reconciliation between both the individuals, but it all failed. © Reuters Vinod Rai, who was the Committee of Administrators chief (CoA) at the time, in his book ‘Not Just a Nightwatchman – My Innings in the BCCI’ has shed light on what exactly was Kohli’s issue with the legendary leg-spinner and why he was not keen on working with him. After the IPL corruption controversy, the Supreme Court had formed a four-member panel and tasked it with running the world’s richest cricket board. Rai, who was the former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), was appointed its chief. © Reuters In his book, he shares that Kohli believed Kumble was too much of a disciplinarian and that is why the team members were not happy with him. He even said that the former skipper had told him that the not just the senior players but the younger members of the team were not happy as they felt intimidated by his presence. “In my conversations with the captain and team management, it was conveyed that Kumble was too much of a disciplinarian and hence the team members were not too happy with him. I had spoken to Virat Kohli on the issue and he did mention that the younger members of the team felt intimidated by the way he worked with them,” Rai writes in his book as quoted by The Indian Express. © Reuters Despite the fallout, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which comprised Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, was not in favour of dismissing Kumble. In fact, after thorough deliberations, it had recommended “Kumble’s reappointment as the head coach”. Kumble had the full backing of the CAC panel that appointed him but he himself decided to step down from his role in the best interest of Indian cricket. Even though he had resigned, he was not happy with the unfair treatment meted out to him. © Reuters He was of the opinion that a captain shouldn’t have been given “so much importance” and as a coach it was his duty to “discipline and professionalism into the team”. “We had long conversations with Kumble after he had returned from the UK. He was obviously upset about the manner in which the entire episode had panned out. He felt he had been unfairly treated and a captain or team should not be given so much importance. It was the duty of the coach to bring discipline and professionalism into the team and as a senior, his views should have been respected by the players,” Rai writes. © Reuters This saga panned out nearly five years ago but the memories are still fresh in the minds of every Indian cricket fan. Ahead of the third ODI between India and South Africa, former Indian cricket captain and commentator, Sunil Gavaskar has opened up about his thoughts on the veteran Indian bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar and how his time with the Men in Blue might be coming to an end soon. 31-year-old Kumar has struggled in the first two One-Day Internationals against South Africa at Boland Park in Paarl. The Little Master’s reason for backing Chahar as Kumar replacement are multifold. Firstly, the two bowlers have a very similar bowling style and depend on swinging the ball heavily in order to have an impact on the match. Furthermore, the 29-year-old has shown a lot of potential as a batter as well while putting up some decent numbers.
