International Test debutant Washington Sundar quickly gained a lot of fans of the longest format of cricket following the first innings of the Brisbane Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After bagging three important wickets in 31 overs, including those of Steve Smith and Cameroon Green during Australia’s batting innings, Sundar played a crucial role in the middle order of the Indian batting lineup when big names like Ajinkya Rahane, Mayank Agarawal and Rishabh Pant failed to leave a mark and the Men in Blue were struggling to get close to the Australian total. Nathan Lyon's 397th Test wicket seemed to come out of nowhere and the Aussies were pumped! #OhWhatAFeeling #AUSvIND | @Toyota_Aus pic.twitter.com/rIhl4ZjbTu — cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) January 16, 2021 Over the course of his phenomenal 62-run inning in a 120+ run partnership with fellow bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur, the 21-year-old played some confident looking strokes all around the Gabba. However, the most “badass‘ shot came off his blade upon the completion of his maiden Test half-century. Facing Nathon Lyon on the pitch, the southpaw slogged a delivery over midwicket with his head looking straight towards the bowler. That's spicy! A no-look six from Sundar 6️⃣ Live #AUSvIND: https://t.co/IzttOVtrUu pic.twitter.com/6JAdnEICnb — cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) January 17, 2021 After connecting with the bat, Sundar did not even bother looking at the ball and knew that it was bound to clear the ropes for a six, as it did. Needless to say, fans of the Men in Blue were head over heels for the young and aggressive cricketer’s ‘no look’ shot and couldn’t stop talking about it online. If a person isn't looking at you that doesn't mean that person is shy maybe it's WASHINGTON SUNDAR who is busy hitting no look six . — Subham (@subhsays) January 17, 2021This is a first ive seen no look six 🤙🏽🏽 #boom got to love the Indian tail order batsmen nowadays what grit — Manav Bhatia (@manbhatia8) January 17, 2021That men sundar... May b India next big spin all rounder ... What a hit and what a confident inings on aus condition agianst best aus attack — Cricket 1st (@adnanmajeed06) January 17, 2021With disdain. — Ram Krishna (@rk21691) January 17, 2021Says who he is on debut. What swag. What confidence. Hats off. — Susheel Raina (@susheelraina) January 17, 2021Washington’s “nonchalant” shot against the hosts reminded a lot of people of a young and might Mahendra Singh Dhoni giving similar treatment to the New Zealand cricket team back in 2009 at Christchurch. Batting against Grant Elliot, the former Indian skipper swung for the fences and kept looking towards the greens as the ball sailed over the boundary. During the ODI clash against the Blackcaps, Dhoni had scored a 58-ball 68 in a winning effort for his country. And even though Sundar and Dhoni are two very different kinds of players, what makes the two similar is the brimming confidence with which they play on the crease and the self-belief that made them take such adventurous shots. In an attempt to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the Indian cricket team will certainly require Washington to stay on top of his game and continue to deliver for the team in the second innings as well. With the resumption of cricket a few months ago, while every team has been busy trying to make the most of the lost time with crucial wins, Pakistan found itself witnessing a nightmare during their recently-concluded tour of New Zealand. Even before a single ball was bowled, the Pakistani cricket team had drawn flak after being reprimanded for breaching quarantine protocols. If their irresponsible behaviour left the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) red-faced, the team's poor performance during the 2-1 loss in the three-match T20I series further added to their woes. © Reuters After their loss in T20Is, Pakistan's misery continued in the two-match Test series where they were completely overshadowed by a rampant New Zealand brigade that romped to a 2-0 win. A 101-run loss in the first Test was followed by a defeat of the magnitude of an innings and 176 runs at Christchurch, that left Pakistani fans up in arms on social media. Clubs teams would play better than this. pic.twitter.com/r9m4ekqbeq — Shoaib Akhtar (@shoaib100mph) January 5, 2021 Amid all the flak, some criticism also came from Pakistani bowling legend Shoaib Akhtar who also slammed the PCB for bringing in "average" players into the team, leading to them playing "school level cricket". In an explosive video shared on Twitter, Akhtar minced no words while analysing Pakistan's mediocre performance against New Zealand. "The policies of the Pakistan Cricket Board is seeing them get what they had sowed. They keep bringing and playing average players, and they keep making an average team and will continue to do average work and because of this, average results will keep coming," Akhtar said in the video. "Whenever Pakistan will play Test cricket, they will be exposed. They are playing school-level cricket and the management has made them school-level cricketers. And now they are again thinking to change the management but when will you change?" he added. Apart from Akhtar, the likes of Mohammad Amir and Inzamam-ul-Haq also slammed PCB recently. While Amir blamed the "yes boss culture" in the national team for his early retirement from international cricket, Inzy had slammed Pakistan bowling coach Waqar Younis for his comments over Babar Azam's injury.
