A cricket match between India and Pakistan is arguably the biggest rivalry in the sport. With billions of fans tuning into their TV sets, it’s no surprise that the encounter always creates new viewership records. Due to the ongoing political tensions between both the nations, India and Pakistan don’t play bi-later series anymore. The only time the fans get to witness the two teams fight it out on a cricket field is during the major multi-nation events hosted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). © Reuters Although players always insist that they treat this match like any other encounter but in reality, like fans, they also feel the nerves. Whenever these two neighbouring countries go up against each other, the players go through intense amounts of pressure, knowing that their fans would accept any defeat but not this one. Legendary Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh played against Pakistan many times during his mighty successful career but still this encounter gave him some jitters. © Reuters The 41-year-old recently went down the memory lane and shared an interesting anecdote about himself that happened during the 2011 World Cup semi-final against arch-rivals Pakistan. ‘The Turbanator’ was one of the key members of the Indian bowling attack in the tournament and given his experience, skipper MS Dhoni made the veteran off-spinner bowl some tough overs. © Reuters Chasing 261, there was a period when the match looked well in balance as Pakistan had reached 142 at the loss of four wickets. Given the crucial juncture of the match, Dhoni decided to bring in his lead spinner back into the attack after the drinks break. Bowling tough overs was not new to Harbhajan. He had done it many times before but given what was on the line, he started feeling the pressure, so much so that he actually started shivering. © Reuters India’s most successful spinner across all formats made this huge revelation on ‘Lessons From The World's Best’ hosted by former India mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton. “There were times… when I was playing the India vs Pakistan World Cup match in Mohali. When Dhoni asked me to bowl in the second spell I actually started shivering. They were batting really well at that stage. He asked me to bowl after the drinks break. I did not want to show people the pressure,” Harbhajan told Upton. © Reuters “You have to keep calm and think that you've done this before and for all these years, you have worked hard for this moment. Keep those emotions aside, focus, take a deep breath and do what you know you do best. “I got a wicket off the first ball itself and it helped me get my confidence back. I was calmer and full of emotions after that wicket and it gave me that breathing space,” said Harbhajan explaining how he controlled his nerves and went on to take crucial wickets that swung the tide in India’s favour. Prithvi Shaw was in the news even before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as multiple media reports stated that he had failed the yoyo test at the National Cricket Academy. While we don't know whether he failed the test or not, it had little impact on his inclusion in the Delhi Capitals team for the ongoing tournament, as he was not a centrally contracted player by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and hence was available for selection even if he hadn't passed the fitness test. Immediately after the news went viral that Shaw had failed the test, the opening batter posted a message on his Instagram story. He urged people not to judge anyone without knowing the whole situation. Prithvi Shaw has failed in the Yo-Yo Test but he is allowed to play in IPL as he is not considered in any formats right now. (Source - PTI) — Johns. (@CricCrazyJohns) March 16, 2022 “Please don’t judge me, when you don’t know my situation, U are creating your own Karma,” read one of Shaw’s Instagram stories. However, the explosive batter left all this behind him when he took the field in Delhi Capitals' season opener against Mumbai Indians. Shaw came out to open the innings with Tim Seifert but after a quick start, he saw three wickets fall in just five deliveries at the other end. The 22-year-old kept going and hit two sixes and four boundaries to keep his side in the contest. © Twitter Delhi Capitals Shaw did not have the best of outings in the Ranji Trophy, where he scored 107 runs in four outings for Mumbai. But he got his mojo back as his handy cameo helped Delhi to chase down the 178-run target with 10 balls to spare. Witnessing Shaw's return to form, a former member of Delhi Capitals' coaching staff Mohammad Kaif recalled one of the most bizarre rituals that you will hear a batter following to get his rhythm back. .@MohammadKaif reveals a secret ritual followed by Prithvi Shaw during Kaif's time at Delhi Capitals as their assistant coach from 2019 to 2021#IPL2022 #PrithviShaw pic.twitter.com/Q0saOo1Lji — Sportskeeda (@Sportskeeda) March 27, 2022 "I was with the Delhi Capitals for three years and got to spend a lot of time with Prithvi Shaw. He had this ritual where, before the match, I used to hold a new ball with the seam and throw it underarm towards him, below his knee. He would keep knocking it back to me," Kaif told Sportskeeda. "One day, when I was having tea, a player came in and told me that Shaw was waiting for me outside. I ran outside and asked him what happened. So he told me, ‘please bowl underarm to me, I am not getting runs. I want to start this ritual again’," he added. Well, we have heard multiple stories of players being superstitious including the likes of Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan admitting to following a set pattern before every game but what Shaw does whenever he is short of runs has to be one of the most bizarre rituals ever in cricket. But if it works for him, the current Delhi Capitals support staff will be happily giving throw downs to their opening batter to keep him in good mental space before every game. View the full article
