  2. Former Indian captain and president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Sourav Ganguly had everyone worried after suffering a mild cardiac arrest last Saturday. A thorough diagnosis revealed that three of Ganguly's arteries were blocked by over 70 per cent that eventually caused the heart attack. © Reuters Ever since the news of his cardiac arrest came out, cricket bigwigs, politicians and fans have been worried about Ganguly's health. Social media was full of heartfelt wishes as everyone wished the Indian cricket legend a speedy recovery. But, everyone can now breathe a sigh of relief. After spending a few days in the hospital, Ganguly was, on 7th January, discharged from the hospital after receiving a stent in one of his arteries. The BCCI chief is now doing fine and recovering under specialised care. Soon, after getting discharged from the hospital, Ganguly penned a touching message for his childhood friend Joydeep on social media. View this post on Instagram Taking to Instagram, Ganguly shared a photo of himself in the company of his friend Joydeep before thanking him for being there during the difficult phase of his life. "What u have done for me in the last 5 days is something I will remember for life..have known U for 40 yrs now..and it's gone beyond just family @joydeep5," Ganguly's post read. © Instagram The former Indian opener also thanked the medical team of the Woodlands Hospital for looking after him during his stay under their supervision. "I thank the doctors at the hospital for the treatment. I am absolutely fine. Hopefully, I will be ready to fly soon," he was quoted as saying by ANI. Despite getting discharged, Ganguly's health will be closely monitored by the team of doctors who took care of him at the Woodlands Hospital. Cardiologist Dr Devi Shetty also claimed that Ganguly's heart is now as strong as it was 'when the former cricketer was 20'. View the full article
  3. Known for his intimidating run-up, muscular physique and, needless to mention, searing pace, Shoaib Akhtar took international cricket by storm in his heydays. While his knack for getting into troubles and run-in with injuries might have overshadowed his talent, Akhtar, long after his retirement, still remains a fan-favourite on social media. © Reuters The former Pakistani speedster continues to capture the imagination on the back of his honest opinions and analysis of the game on social media. And, more recently, he won over Indian cricket fans with his special tribute to cricket icons MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma during a Q&A on Twitter. Jasay he word market main aata hai toh batata hoon. — Shoaib Akhtar (@shoaib100mph) January 3, 2021Asked by a fan to describe Rohit Sharma in one word, Akhtar replied that as soon as a word is invented to do justice to the Indian opener's capabilities, he'll share it. "Jasay hi word market main aata hai toh batata hoon," Akhtar responded. Its the name of an era — Shoaib Akhtar (@shoaib100mph) January 3, 2021 When asked about what he has to say about MS Dhoni, Akhtar won over the internet by replying: "It's the name of an era". Ronaldo — Shoaib Akhtar (@shoaib100mph) January 3, 2021Apart from questions on Dhoni and Rohit, Akhtar also settled the decade-long debate on Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. 6. In what has been a forgettable year owing to the global pandemic, 2020 was even more cruel and unforgiving for MS Dhoni's fans. First, they had to bid adieu to their favourite cricketer from international cricket. And then, they had to endure the painful sight of Dhoni cutting a sorry figure owing to Chennai Super Kings' miserable outing in IPL 2020. But, after months of agony, Dhoni and his fans have finally something to cheer for. The former Indian captain was recently honoured by the ICC with the Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade. The 'Captain Cool' was chosen by fans unanimously for the special award owing to his heartfelt gesture towards Ian Bell in 2011. 🇮🇳 MS DHONI wins the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade The former India captain was chosen by fans unanimously for his gesture of calling back England batsman Ian Bell after a bizarre run out in the Nottingham Test in 2011.#ICCAwards | #SpiritOfCricket pic.twitter.com/3eCpyyBXwu — ICC (@ICC) December 28, 2020 During their tour of England in 2011, India found themselves on the backfoot after losing the 1st Test. In a bid to stage a much-needed comeback, the Dhoni-led team produced a much-improved performance in the 2nd Test. With the game evenly balanced, the third day's play saw Ian Bell getting run-out in a bizarre manner. Looking dangerous with a hundred to his name, Eoin Morgan tucked an Ishant Sharma delivery towards the leg side where Praveen Kumar put in a full dive to stop the ball from reaching the fence. But, Bell and his batting partner were of the opinion that the ball had touched the ropes before starting to walk towards the pavilion for the tea break. But, Kumar fired in a throw and caused Bell's run-out. The whole incident attracted boos from a jeering crowd as the players made their way back into the hut. During the break, then England captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower went to the Indian dressing room and asked Dhoni if they would consider overturning their appeal. And, the Indian team obliged. India withdrew their appeal and Dhoni called Bell back to bat at Nottingham. After the tea break, the sight of Bell and Morgan coming out to bat was met with cheers and applause for Dhoni and the Indian team. The moment has been voted by fans as one of the most heartening gestures on the playing field in the last 10 years, eventually allowing Dhoni to bag the ICC honour. He is still the only captain in international cricket to have won all three major ICC tournaments - World Cup, World T20 and Champions Trophy. View the full article

  8. Football as a sport has given many troubled youngsters a purpose in life and a potent mechanism allowing them to overcome their hardships. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, amongst others, endured similar circumstances as teens before finding solace in the beautiful game. But, Diego Maradona's journey arguably remains one of football's greatest scripts. Born to a poor family of bricklayers and factory workers who had moved from the Corrientes Province to the slums of Buenos Aires in search of a better life, Diego Armando Maradona fought poverty and struggled through his childhood before finding an escape route to all his problems through football. © Reuters For an eight-year-old kid who was first spotted by a talent scout playing for his neighbourhood club Estrella Roja, Maradona shattered records only to create new ones in an illustrious career which is second to none. But, that alone didn't make Maradona the legend we'll never forget. It was Maradona's brutal honesty and rare attempt to hide his many vices that truly allowed fans to connect with him. A football demigod who had frailties and shortcomings like any other human being. He became a person others wanted to emulate. A controversial figure, who was hated as much as he was loved, with a knack for stirring great upheaval. His life became a story that consistently feeded people with tales of shock and awe. And, on 26th November, Maradona once again hogged the limelight, only this time bringing an end to football's most talked-about story. © Reuters At the age of 60, Maradona died of a heart attack at his Buenos Aires mansion. Just two weeks ago, the Argentine was released from hospital following the surgery for a bleed on his brain. Early on Wednesday, he had come down for breakfast looking pale and complained that he felt cold. Shortly before noon, a nurse discovered Maradona and phoned for help. But, before paramedics could arrive, Maradona had passed away. Ever since the news of the death of one of football's biggest icons surfaced, the world of football has gone in a state of mourning. Three days of mourning have been declared by the Argentinian president Alberto Fernandez and a state funeral is also in order. But the tributes aren't just restricted to Argentina or the footballing world. In fact, farewell messages continue to pour in on social media from every corner of the globe. Amongst all the messages, here's a look at 5 heartfelt tributes from sports icons that really sum up Maradona's legacy: 'Will Play Together In Heaven' Que notícia triste. Eu perdi um grande amigo e o mundo perdeu uma lenda. Ainda há muito a ser dito, mas por agora, que Deus dê força para os familiares. Um dia, eu espero que possamos jogar bola juntos no céu. pic.twitter.com/6Li76HTikA — Pelé (@Pele) November 25, 2020 Sharing the iconic photo of Maradona in an Argentina jersey holding up the World Cup, the Brazilian football legend took to Twitter and wrote that the world had lost a legend. "What sad news. I lost a great friend and the world lost a legend. There is still much to be said, but for now, may God give strength to family members. One day, I hope we can play ball together in the sky," Pele tweeted. 'He Will Never Leave Us' View this post on Instagram For someone who spent quality with Maradona over the years, Lionel Messi was heartbroken with the passing of his fellow Argentine. The Barcelona talisman took to Instagram and shared a series of photographs of himself in the company of Maradona. He captioned his Instagram post with a touching tribute that read: "A very sad day for all Argentines and football. He has left us but he will never leave us because Diego is eternal. I will keep all the beautiful moments that I lived with him and would like to send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP". 'My Hero No More' My hero no more ..my mad genius rest in peace ..I watched football for you.. pic.twitter.com/JhqFffD2vr — Sourav Ganguly (@SGanguly99) November 25, 2020 Sourav Ganguly might be a cricket legend and, now, the president of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) but football was always his first love. He idolised Maradona growing up and even played with him in a charity game when the Argentine visited Kolkata in 2017. Thus, when Ganguly got the news of Maradona's passing, he couldn't stop himself from sharing his grief on social media. "My hero no more ..my mad genius rest in peace ..I watched football for you," the BCCI chief tweeted. 'You'll Never Be Forgotten' Hoje despeço-me de um amigo e o Mundo despede-se de um génio eterno. Nunca serás esquecido.???? pic.twitter.com/WTS21uxmdL — Cristiano Ronaldo (@Cristiano) November 25, 2020Maradona might have favoured Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo back in the day, but he eventually became a fan of the Portuguese with equal respect to his fellow countryman. Maradona had also presented the 2017 FIFA Men's Player of the Year award to Ronaldo. Following the death of Maradona, Ronaldo paid his respects with a touching message on Twitter. "Today I say goodbye to a friend and the world says goodbye to an eternal genius. One of the best ever. An unparalleled magician. He leaves too soon, but leaves a legacy without limits and a void that will never be filled. Rest in peace, ace. You will never be forgotten," Ronaldo tweeted. 9. At the age of just 19, Sania Mirza played her first Grand Slam tournament. Months later, she became the first Indian woman to win a WTA title. And, in 2006, she became the first female Indian to be seeded in a Grand Slam event. The early feats of Mirza surely put her on the map, especially in a country where cricket overshadowed other sports. If the early promise of a young teen turned heads, Mirza's unmatched feats that followed in her illustrious career further allowed the Indian tennis sensation to build a legacy capable of inspiring generations to come. While many are well versed with her feats and achievements, little is known about the countless hurdles she had to overcome in her career. Amongst all the struggles she had to go through, the biggest, and arguably the most endearing, was becoming a mother. The Indian tennis star had taken a break from tennis after undergoing surgery in 2017. She later extended the break and announced her pregnancy. On 30th October 2018, Sania and her hubby Shoaib Malik welcomed a baby boy, Izhaan, into their family. View this post on Instagram Owing to her personal commitments, Mirza's professional career took a hit during her two-year break. Many had written her off, especially after she became a mother, but a 33-year-old Mirza surprised everyone after winning the Doubles title at the WTA Hobart International earlier this January. Her inspiring comeback was a testimony to all the hardwork Mirza had put in, resuming her career exactly where she left. Her journey is somewhat similar to that of American star Serena Williams who, too, proved her detractors wrong by a stellar show on the tennis court after embracing motherhood. That's probably why Mirza couldn't stop herself from posting a heartfelt message for Williams on social media. . @serenawilliams your story has inspired me to pen this letter. The #BeingSerena documentary echoes my experience and of women worldwide who everyday balance family and personal goals. If you are in India, you can catch Being Serena on @DiscoveryPlusIn pic.twitter.com/Xlu9q8vEKb — Sania Mirza (@MirzaSania) November 25, 2020 After watching 'Being Serena', a documentary based on William's journey which is now available on Discovery Plus, Mirza penned an open letter to all the mothers out there. "@serenawilliams your story has inspired me to pen this letter. The #BeingSerena documentary echoes my experience and of women worldwide who everyday balance family and personal goals," Mirza tweeted along with a touching letter. View this post on Instagram In the open letter, titled "An Ode to All Mothers", Mirza said: "Pregnancy and having a baby made me a better person. Pregnancy is something that I had experienced for the first time in my life. I thought about it and I think we all have a certain picture about it but once you experience it, you really understand what it means. It absolutely changes you as a human being". View this post on Instagram Talking about the physical obstacles she had to fight, Mirza revealed: "Getting back to shape and form after pregnancy can be a challenge and I can relate to Serena and every other woman on that. I think it’s normal for everyone because you don’t know how your body is going to react post-pregnancy and during pregnancy". View this post on Instagram "Having put-on around 23kgs during my pregnancy, I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to get back to being fit and playing tennis again. However, I lost around 26 kilos with a lot of workout regimes and very strict diets and came back to tennis because that’s what I know, love and do. Finally, when I won at Hobart after coming back it was pretty amazing. I was honestly very proud of myself to have been able to put myself to compete at the highest level again and I think that’s where I was mentally," she added. View this post on Instagram For decades, women have been forced to let go of their careers and aspirations after becoming mothers. There is little doubt over the challenges motherhood entails, but, in the modern world, women like Mirza and Williams are not only breaking the stereotypes of being a mother, but their respective journeys are an inspiration for all the women who face similar challenges in life. Three title triumphs, a record 10 Playoffs appearances, eight final finishes and the highest win percentage amongst all teams in the tournament; Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clearly needs no introduction when it comes to the Indian Premier League (IPL). But, for a team that is the perfect embodiment of success and popularity, MS Dhoni-led Chennai surprised everyone with their mediocrity in the thirteenth edition of the IPL. The CSK fans have been forced to watch their beloved team getting hammered by one opponent after another this season. In what has proven to be arguably their worst campaign in IPL history, Chennai have won a mere four matches in 12 matches, so far, losing as many as eight games - an absolute crime for a team of their stature. But, the final nail in the coffin came last night when Rajasthan Royals handed an eight-wicket win to Mumbai Indians (MI) in Abu Dhabi. Thank you for standing by us through everything. #WeShallPlayOn #WhistlePodu #Yellove #WhistleFromHome pic.twitter.com/5XpNTgZDh3 — Chennai Super Kings (@ChennaiIPL) October 25, 2020 Rajasthan's win has ended Chennai's campaign this year, making them the first team to be eliminated from IPL 2020. The top four spots are currently occupied by Mumbai (14 points), Delhi Capitals (14 points), Royal Challengers Bangalore (14 points) and Kolkata Knight Riders (12 points). On the other hand, CSK, who have just eight points to their name, can reach a maximum of 12 points (even if they win their next two games) which won't be enough to progress further in the tournament. © Twitter/@IPL For the first time in their IPL history, Chennai will not be seen in the Playoffs. As much as Chennai, Dhoni, too, has taken a big hit this season. There was a time when Dhoni dictated terms on the field like a boss as his team annihilated every opponent with nonchalance. While his team was on fire, Dhoni was like ice, cool and calm. But, this year, Dhoni has looked clueless in the middle. The fans had waited for over a year to see the former Indian captain in action. But, no one wanted to see their favourite cricketer in a hapless situation like this. As Chennai fans mourned the shocking elimination of their team, Dhoni's wife Sakshi penned a heartfelt poem to lift the spirits in the CSK camp. View this post on Instagram 💛 A post shared by Sakshi Singh Dhoni (@sakshisingh_r) on Oct 25, 2020 at 10:12am PDT Titled 'It's just a game', Dhoni's better-half perfectly captured the sentiments of every CSK fan. "You were winners then, you are winners now! True warriors are born to fight as they will always be Super Kings in our hearts and in our minds!," read an excerpt from Sakshi's poem on Instagram. Down and out, Chennai will be seen in action against Kolkata and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on 29th October and 1st November respectively in their last two inconsequential games. After getting knocked out of the tournament, Dhoni, now, wants the CSK players to enjoy the game irrespective of the result. © Twitter/@IPL "It does hurt when you don't do well so you try to amplify certain emotions. So that the guys just don't drop the game. That can leave with 12 painful hours of the remaining time in the tournament. You have to enjoy the game no matter where you are on the table. If you are not enjoying the cricket, it can become cruel and painful," Dhoni said in the post-match presentation after their eight-wicket win over RCB on Sunday. View the full article
  12. Often labelled as one of the most popular and successful teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), to everyone's surprise this season, have looked a mere shadow of the three-time champions we cherished in the past. From losing key players, struggling for form to unfavourable results, nothing has gone CSK's way in the tournament this year. With seven losses in 10 matches, the Chennai brigade is currently languishing at the last spot in the points table. Their recent seven-wicket loss to Rajasthan Royals (RR) has potentially ended their Playoffs hopes and the fans aren't impressed. Amid CSK's poor run, skipper MS Dhoni has drawn a lot of flak for the fortunes of the 'Yellow Brigade' this season. © Twitter/@IPL The Punjab opener had anchored the chase for his team with a brilliant knock of 77 runs which allowed them to tie the match and push it into a 'Super Over'. Facing a daunting task of defending just five runs in an over, Punjab were once again aided by Rahul whose brilliant piece of glovework, that led to the run-out of Quinton de Kock, allowed his team to tie the first 'Super Over' before eventually winning it in the second. My thala ️️ pic.twitter.com/Av7DUPyn8R — ɢαjαl (@Gajal_Dalmia) October 18, 2020 Rahul's performance with the willow had already earned him plaudits, but it was his exceptional run-out that became the highlight of the match. The right-handed batsman was lauded by cricket pundits and fans alike on social media. Amongst all the praise, one Punjab fan shared the photo of Rahul's run-out on Twitter alongside the caption: "My Thala". There is only one Thala Gajal and everyone knows who he is. — K L Rahul (@klrahul11) October 19, 2020 In response to the fan's tweet, Rahul, who can't seem to do any wrong this season, won many hearts by reminding everyone that there is only one Thala. "There is only one Thala Gajal and everyone knows who he is," Rahul replied. A thrilling win against Mumbai did give Punjab a ray of hope to turn their fortunes this season but the road ahead is extremely tough. Having lost six games in nine matches so far, the Rahul-led side have little margin for error if they intend to make the cut for the Playoffs this season. And, their next clash, which against table-topper Delhi Capitals (DC) on October 20, is not going to be easy either. View the full article
