  1. Every year it's the same old chant – I need to stay fit. I need to hit the gym. But just a few weeks into this 'healthy state of mind', I land up giving up on the weight routines and the circuit trainings, because 'humse na ho paayega'! I don't last more than a month in the gym and that's something I have been consistently trying to change and failing miserably. This year, instead of spending my hard earned money into a kidney's worth of year-long gym memberships, I did quite the opposite. I invested in my workout gear, precisely my running shoes. After months of goading myself into staying fit, I decided to take myself seriously and turn everyday into a run towards a healthy lifestyle. Too much 'gyaan', right? Let me get to the point – I kicked off my new resolve at breakneck speed and hit the park the very next day. As a novice runner, I started a 2 mile run with my gym sneakers, but just a few days into this routine I began to notice the discomfort I was ignoring as a beginner's stride. It's only when a runner friend of mine pointed out my shoes did I realize my biggest running mistake – not investing in the right gear. That's when I bought the recently launched Reebok Forever Floatride Energy running shoes that offer pro-level performance technology. Now, I wasn't expecting to turn into a pro-runner just because I bought some pro-level shoes, but there are a number of small things that helped me grow as a runner and stay fit. For instance, my broad feet (elephant feet, whatever you want to call them) have never felt more comfortable in a pair of sneakers. The Floatride Energy foam also ensured soft cushioning on the sole which led to quick energy returns and a boost in my stride. Of course, besides the comfort of the cool new Reebok kicks, daily practice worked in my favour and helped me move from my daily 2 mile mark to the eventful 5 mile run. I even landed up joining a local running group to keep the morale up and get myself some running buddies to ensure that I stick to it. I'm a month into this routine and I can't believe I never thought of this earlier. Running is fun and the right gear, only makes it so much more easier. The best part about the Reebok Floatride is the durability and the lightweight upper mesh that gives maximum flexibility and comfort. Another bonus, the new Reebok Floatride Energy cost way less than any gym membership and are available for â¹ 9,999 in stores, on shop4reebok.com and on Flipkart, Myntra and jabong. Convinced to join my runners club yet?
  2. All social media platforms are designed for the living, so that we can connect and interact with other people online. But a platform like Facebook, which has been around for decades, has a lot of users who're no longer alive. So the social media giant rolled out some features like the ability to assign a legacy contact to be charge of one's account after they die. Now, Facebook has announced that it's rolling out more features for dead people and how these legacy contacts have more control over the deceased person's account. It's a really nice gesture, and we're glad that Facebook is offering these new features. However, we would have loved to see Facebook fixing its platform for the living first. You know, the privacy issues that are giving nightmares and keeping us away from the platform. © Reuters Anyway, Facebook has rolled out some meaningful features, so let's check them out. First off, Facebook has added the ability to manage a new 'Tribute' section where the loved ones can remember the deceased person and pay their respects. Facebook also noted that it's addressing some pressing complaints against how a dead person's account is handled. Now, for instance, before an account is 'memorialized', Facebook will verify whether the person is actually dead. Only after a successful verification will the legacy contact be able to control the account. Also, only a friend or a family member can request to have an account memorialized. Lastly, the company also said they will use AI tools to prevent sending birthday reminders and friend recommendations for deceased users. Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said, “We know the loss of a friend or family member can be devastating - and we want Facebook to be a place where people can support each other while honouring the memory of their loved ones.” © Facebook Yeah, all these features, as we said, are really useful for the legacy contact, but we'd rather have the company focusing on fixing privacy issues for the living. Really, we all have some serious doubts on Facebook and how it handles our account and private information. If things keep escalating at the same rate and if people keep quitting the platform due to privacy reasons, then there will be no dead people's account or legacy contacts in the first place.
  3. Armpit hair can be an extremely controversial territory for men, because whether you keep it or get rid of it depends entirely on how you like it. While armpit hair is absolutely fine, given India's weather overall, it probably is advisable to not let them grow way too much to avoid excessive sweat and stench. A little bit of growth is absolutely fine, even when you're shirtless on the beach playing volleyball. © Pinterest However, how you decide to groom it is important. While most men turn to their local salons and ask for a quick swipe of the razor on their armpits as well, probably once in a month or a fortnight, it isn't the best way. No, doing it at home while using the best shaving cream with your own razor is also not a good idea at all. Here is why you should always trim your armpit hair, instead of shaving. 1. Your armpit does not have an even skin surface. It's extremely tricky to maneuvre a sharp razor on that uneven surface, and more often than not, you will end up with a cut or two. The skin there is also extremely sensitive apart from being uneven, so a bloody mess isn't a possibility you can rule out. Why take chances? Use a trimmer with '1' as the setting (setting it at zero probably isn't a good idea if you're clumsy) and zoom through without any cuts or scrapes. © Getty Images 2. When you shave, the hair seems to grow thicker and coarser, because it has been cut near the skin surface. The result? That itchy, prickly feeling on your skin within a couple of days. You know no feeling in the world is worse. It isn't as bad when you trim. © Instagram/Sonusood 3. Shaving is tough on your skin. When you shave a part of skin that is as soft and sensitive, the skin is always damaged. Also, razor burns and even the smallest of cut/nick with take way longer in this area to heal. You may end up with pimples, boils, and a number of other annoying skin issues. Why not use a trimmer and nip the whole situation at the bud? All we can say is, it's easier to trim your troubles away.
  4. Some people apparently just want to blindly hate and not even see who or what they're directing the hate towards. Most of the time it's just sad when that happens, but in some cases, it's hilarious and I'm so glad this is one of them. If you've been on the social media these past few days, it's safe to assume you've seen the whole Surf Excel controversy. The brand made a cute little ad as a way to promote communal harmony, but some people had a problem with it. Basically the ad shows a little girl making every kid in the lane to throw all their colours on her while she rides a bike and as soon their colours run out, she asks a little boy dressed in all white to come out. She then drops him at a mosque for namaaz and says that he's going to play holi with everyone after he's done. A lot of people found some problem with the ad, mainly thinking that 'only Hindus are targeted'. Soon, the hashtag #BoycottSurfExcel was everywhere. One of the worst Ad ever by Surf Excel. It should be rolled back and @HUL_News should apologize for hurting sentiment of our religion.#BoycottSurfExcel — Dileep Jaiswal (@DileepKJaiswal) March 11, 2019 There are hundereds of tweets like this but seems like someone decided to take some more action against the 'evil company', it just went hilariously wrong. This particular person went on to his Google Playstore and left a horrible review on the app. If you're wondering why would a detergent have its own app, well this person actually ended up the MS Excel app. Yep, that happened. This is what blind hate does. Remember the entire Snapdeal-Snapchat fiasco? This is also as funny as that. When you are confused between #SurfExcel and Microsoft Excel, shit happens. pic.twitter.com/vxJaVfLzcw — Aparna (@chhuti_is) March 11, 2019 It was just inevitable. I was actually thinking of this earlier today. And now it's happened! ð — Siddharth Singh (@siddharth3) March 11, 2019 Wait, there's another review. I think they got lost online a bit. pic.twitter.com/zo5AqSxb5J — Karthik (@beastoftraal) March 11, 2019 Everyone should do it. In solidarity with @HUL_News, I'm going to install @Microsoft Excel on my mobile today. — Pranjal Dube (@pranjaldube) March 11, 2019 Sums it up. pic.twitter.com/TBP2RM0C9A — DivyaSree Padupalli (@DP_DivyaSree) March 11, 2019 *DJ Khaled voice* Another one! Another one ð pic.twitter.com/RhGJMw43WN — Maswood Zafar (@MaswoodZ) March 11, 2019 Good idea. Thought this to be spoof until I read the comments on playstore. Now @FarOutAkhtar should put disclaimer that Excel Entertainment has nothing to do with Surf Excel. — Ankur Shah (@fukatgyaan) March 11, 2019 The best. Welp pic.twitter.com/qOMMziMO1g — Chan Udarbe (@ChanUdarbe) March 11, 2019
  5. As the CEO of Apple, it is safe to say that Tim Cook is a prominent name in the industry. It's hard to miss the guy in the glasses, even if you are not particularly tech-savvy. However, it looks like the US president, our very own Donald Trump, thinks Apple's CEO is.... 'Tim Apple'. © Reuters During an American Workforce Policy Advisory Board meeting yesterday, the president referred to the CEO of Apple as 'Tim Apple' instead of Tim Cook. In his defence, names are hard. We get it. But we wonder if you can flub a name like Tim Cook, given his reputation in the industry and beyond. Here's what Trump said while addressing the media - "You've really put a big investment in our country. We appreciate it very much, Tim Apple." Better yet, here's a video clip in which you can see Trump unmistakenly referring to him as 'Tim Apple'. Also, watching Tim Cook politely nodding his head is just priceless. Trump just called Apple CEO Tim Cook “Tim Apple” pic.twitter.com/gTHHtjWvc9 — Sean O'Kane (@sokane1) March 6, 2019 It's hard to tell if Trump did this on purpose or he legitimately did a, what we like to call, an oopsie. In fact, this isn't the first time Trump has made a mistake while referring to someone. Last year, he referred to Lockheed Martin's CEO as "Marillyn Lockheed", instead of Marillyn Hewson. It's alright Mr Trump. Better luck next time.
  6. At the beginning of this month, Apex Legends was announced, a Battle Royale game that is free-to-play just like PUBG and Fortnite. The game is developed by Respawn and Electronic Arts and is available for download on PS4, Xbox One, and Origin for PC. © KnowTechie Last week, Respawn revealed that the game has hit 25 million total players and had "well over" 2 million concurrent players during the weekend. If we compare, Fortnite took four months to achieve the same numbers and the game currently has 200 million players. Today, the developer has revealed that it has already banned more than 16,000 accounts for cheating. The company also asked users to capture proof of cheaters, such as a screenshot or video clip and send it to them. Even if the proof isn't available, they are urging players to report the cheaters' ID and it shall be taken up for investigation. © Respawn The game currently lacks an in-game reporting tool and the developer has acknowledged that it's a "good idea". Though, there isn't a timeline on when the feature will be rolled out. Given the massive popularity of the game, we expect the reporting system to drop soon since a manual complain filing is bothersome for players as well as the company. A cheater who goes by the name of Mengiez on Twitch was caught cheating in his own broadcast. Viewers noticed that he's asking a wall hack to keep an eye on his opponent's location. Another Twitch streamer going by the name Dharyxd was caught using an aimbot. The videos have since been deleted, but the cheating cost them their accounts. © Respawn The game will have a second patch this week, but we don't know what to expect with the upcoming Apex Legends patch. So far, Respawn has been doing pretty well with their response to player concerns. Many players have been complaining that PUBG has a huge issue with hackers and the developers aren't doing enough to curb it. Using hacks to score points ruins the fun of the game because no player should have an undue advantage. In December, PUBG received a new anti-cheating tool called BattlEye, and it helped in 30,000 cheating accounts.
  7. Online shopping is hands down one of the best modes of shopping today. It's hassle-free, quick, and at times sends you things that you didn't know you needed in life. The world is primarily divided into two parts - one, who gets what they shopped for online; and two, who always gets a wrong product delivered at their doorstep. Sonakshi Sinha recently found out what it's like to be a part of the second world when she called for headphones and got a piece of rusted iron instead. Sonakshi took to Twitter to share her ordeal and wrote, "Hey @amazonIN! Look what i got instead of the @bose headphones i ordered! Properly packed and unopened box, looked legit… but only on the outside. Oh and your customer service doesnt even want to help, thats what makes it even worse." Well, at least Amazon's costumer care is not biased towards celebrities. Hey @amazonIN! Look what i got instead of the @bose headphones i ordered! Oh and your customer service doesnt even want to help, thats what makes it even worse. pic.twitter.com/sA1TwRNwGl — Sonakshi Sinha (@sonakshisinha) December 11, 2018 Soon the e-commerce giant responded to her tweet apologising for her bad 'ordering experience'. Uh-oh! This is unacceptable! Apologies for the recent ordering experience and the subsequent correspondence with our support team. Please share your details here: https://t.co/vIE01Lj9nJ, we'll get in touch with you directly. ^JC — Amazon Help (@AmazonHelp) December 11, 2018 Twitter being Twitter left no stone unturned in turning this opportunity to troll her. 8. Tired of failing the New Year's fitness resolutions? Getting average results even after following your fitness guru's training and nutrition advice? It all starts with this fitness discussion around the new year with friends and family that how we want to lose X amount of weight or gain X amount of weight or achieve some form of idealized physique. A goal is always set by everyone but we are unable to reach or surpass their fitness goals. Did You Ever Think Why? © Unsplash We set a goal instead of systems. When we set a goal, it's basically an emotional attachment without any concrete daily action plan while systems can help us design that daily action plan and instead of focusing on the result we put the effort in following the daily procedure required to achieve our fitness goal. Goal: I want to lose 3kg this month System: 1) Following Daily set calories + Amount of time set for physical activity Above is building a long-term process in a space where most of us are focussed on finding quick and short-cut solutions. Now that we have understood the concept of systems in general, let's talk about the steps we can take to create this sustainable fitness lifestyle and kickstart your fitness journey in 2019. 1) Take Baby Steps When you have decided to kickstart your fitness journey in 2019, you need to understand that the change you make has to be sustainable for it to have a long-term effect. Example: A completely inactive person, with unhealthy eating habits for the majority of his life, decides to start his fitness journey by directly jumping on an intense training program and changing his entire daily eating pattern in a short amount of time. While above seems like a very good start, it's probably going to go down the drain after few months of mental exhaustion or worst completely returning back to before. Start slowly, aim to increase your activity level more than previous and start replacing unhealthy food options for healthy one by one. Keep a track whether you are able to maintain the change and adapt to the small change you just made. If yes, increase it one level further and so on according to your schedule. 2) Track Your Exercise And Food © Unsplash When you begin tracking what you eat and how much do you exercise daily you will become more conscious of your actions for your fitness goals. Results should be measurable and so should your daily process to improvise and find the areas which are stopping you from achieving your fitness goals in 2019. Example- I eat healthily, I consume good food Optimal way: I eat 2500 calories and I exercise daily for 45 minutes and repeat this 4 times a week (more details, the better) 3) Seek Knowledge And Help If you are determined but you don't have a direction for achieving your fitness goals in 2019 you are going to go haywire and won't achieve your desired outcome. Best and fastest way to learn something is to pay someone and seek knowledge. Other methods include reading articles over here and follow up on researches. If you want to avoid all the above hassle and save your time, the first option is what you should go ahead with. 4) Environment Over Motivation © Unsplash Lot of times we indulge ourselves in watching motivational videos and motivational music, though science has clearly demonstrated the impact of music on training, the goal shouldn't be motivation but it should be self-motivation. The fire should come from within and for the fire to stay alive it requires you to surround yourself with people who support you and are also determined to achieve their fitness goals in 2019. You can't outgrow your environment. Your motivation to kickstart your fitness goal in 2019 will plummet down but if you have supportive people around and people who also want to become a better version of themselves, you will have a higher probability of doing the same and sustaining your fitness for a longer period. As a good measure always make friends with people who you see regularly in the gym and learn from them. 5) Mental Fitness Don't get caught up in the best method or the best diet plan just because you read it somewhere online. Always do what's the best for you. Do what allows you to follow your plan consistently and the one that keeps your mind happy. If the training or nutrition plan doesn't keep you happy you probably should drop it and try to hop on to some new gimmick again. Remember folks, fitness is not short term but the thing you want to keep up with for the longest period possible. Go achieve your fitness goals in 2019! 9. You go to the gym and tell the trainer that you want to get in shape. Maybe even get lean or ripped. They will say that you need to go on a diet. This part is correct. But the misery they put you through is one of the worst things that can happen to anyone. These things are: 1. A boiled food diet. Your taste buds will die a slow death. All you get to eat are foods like boiled chicken, steamed fish, oats, etc. You justify it by saying you eat food for function and not for taste. You also find stupid fitness quotes like 'No pain, No gain' motivating and relatable to your situation. 2. A ketogenic diet. The new blue-eyed baby of schmucks who say deluded stuff like 'I train your trainer.' Essentially, carbs are the reason two world wars happened, cancer happened, and the reason humans cannot fly. Carbs are the reason for all things wrong with the world. You must avoid it. Basically, these schools of thought are plain idiotic. You do not need to swing to any extremes if you want to get lean or shredded. Here are five things you should do instead: 1. Count Your Calories © Thinkstock The laws of thermodynamics dictate a change in your body weight. You eat more calories than you expend, you gain weight. You eat fewer calories than you expend and you lose weight. It all comes down to this. Any dietary pattern that you follow, any macro ratio you eat, whether you eat high carbs or high fat, in the end, it doesn't even matter if it does not put you in a caloric deficit. 2. Eat More Protein © YouTube Protein or amino acids are the building blocks of your muscle tissue. If you want more muscle, you need higher rates of muscle protein synthesis. Muscle protein synthesis is the process through which your body synthesizes more muscle tissue. Target anywhere between 1.8 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilo of your body weight. 3. Eat Your Fruits And Vegetables Your mom used to tell you this as a kid. Eat your greens and fruits. You did not back then. You don't even now. Fruits and veggies will ensure you are eating enough fiber for the day. It will keep you full, help you have good gut health, and provide you with micronutrients like vitamins and minerals. There is no downside to it. 4. Embrace Flexible Dieting © Thinkstock Flexible dieting, simply put, is a mindset. A mindset that helps you see food as it is, nutritious and helps you towards your goals or non-nutritious and takes you further away from your goal. You stop seeing food as good or bad. You do not swing into diet days and cheat days which is more harmful. Read this piece. You eat highly nutritious food most of the time with a little less nutritious food sometimes that helps you stay on track. 5. Stop Believing That You Need A Lot Of Supplements If you go to buy a supplement for a particular goal today, the industry has developed so much stupid stuff that they can sell you one for anything. A majority of these supplements are often useless. Supplements that can be beneficial for everyone are whey protein, caffeine, and creatine monohydrate. That's it. No BCAAs, no fat burners, etc. Read this for more info on this. Start doing these things in 2019 and get in shape. Not waste another year spinning your wheels. 10. Wedding season is back with a bang and apart from rejoicing at the festivities, there are a lot of other things you may indulge in to live through the cold, long and harsh winter months. I mean yes, free-flowing alcohol is one option at weddings but I was talking about something a little more cosy! Weddings is a great time to meet new people and form new associations. If you're from the groom or the bride's side and are closely associated with either then you'll definitely be interacting with their extended families and getting to know the unknowns a little better. (AA Films) Chances are, you'll find someone attractive enough to probably make a move too. Since festivities are in order and you're single AF, there might be a chance you feel a little left out and might resort to the option of approaching women at the wedding. While that might be a good idea, remember you're in the year 2018, the same year, #MeToo became a conscious effort to make a deliberate change in the way we act and feel, and so approaching a woman should be kept under measures suitable to the crowd you're approaching. I am not saying you're creepy, I just mean there is a certain code of conduct you need to follow through with, that'll still get you what you like and want. So, if you're looking at hooking up/getting to know someone at a wedding this year, maybe this is how you should go about it (1) Be As Amicable As You Possibly Can Be cool and be as social as you possibly can. Be amicable and helpful around the ceremony and make an impression on everyone, not just women. And by impression I mean make a good impression. Women usually do notice single men around and if you make a good impression and the woman you're trying to impress sees other women talking to you or gravitate towards you, she will do so herself too. On the other hand, if you come off a shy awkward and displaying a lack of confidence, no one is going to pay you any heed at all. So, be the kind of guy who is liked by everyone and try and be as confident as you can. (c)Eros International (2) Make Her Comfortable You may spot someone you like who probably knows no one else except the groom or the bride. If you are talking to her, make sure you keep her company and don't make her feel left out, just because she's awkward. Make her have some fun and introduce her to people, so she can converse with them too. Don't hit on her randomly and go away, she will feel a lot more awkward if you do that. (c)Eros International (3) Do Your Due Diligence If you like someone , go for it but also find out who she is and if she's from the same side of the party as you! If she's not, then ask someone who knows her about her and get to know who she is. Make sure you're in no way related to her, before you go talk to her. You might just be talking to your 5th cousin, you've never met, without you knowing it! So, it's always a good thing to find out whatever you can about the girl. (4) Don't Be An outrageous Flirt You never know what women might misconstrue as inappropriate behaviour, since appropriateness is still being defined or is rather decided by the girl so don't outrageously and aggressively flirt with anyone. You can obviously get her a drink and take her phone number politely but if she's not interested, it's best to move on and let her be. No, women don't like to be pursued beyond a point. If she likes the chase, trust me you'll know she wants to be chased. But if she doesn't you will know that too. So don't make her uncomfortable, especially at a wedding! (c)Pintrest (5) Don't Get Too Drunk Yes, alcohol is everywhere you breath. It's a big fancy Indian wedding and unless the families have an issue with alcohol, it's probably more prevalent than some draught stricken areas in India. But that doesn't mean you drink the entire fountain! While getting drunk is great, it loosens your inhibitions, it's not okay to get too drunk also. Maybe you can offer the lady you're crushing on, a drink and give her company with your drink? That way you drink with her and you don't go overboard! (c)Eros Interational Approaching a women anywhere in today's day and age has to be well thought out. If she's not comfortable with your presence get the hint and leave her alone. It all works on the principle of consent and once you understand that, it'll be easier to make a fair judgment of what women really want. It's either a yes, or a no and a no certainly doesn't translate to 'I wish you try harder'!
  11. We are not sure about 'achhe din', but it seems like the popularity of moral policing around porn consumption in the country is really gaining momentum. Recently, The Indian Express carried a report that talked about how a neurology professor from the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) in Banaras Hindu University (BHU) launched an app that blocks porn sites and plays bhajans instead. © Google Playstore Called the 'Har Har Mahadev' app, it was created under the aegis of professor Dr. Vijay Nath Mishra from the Department of Neurology at IMS. Created with the aim to help curb people's addiction to porn and violent content online, the app blocks over 3,800 porn websites. What it does instead is, play devotional songs and inspirational speeches by personalities like Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela when one tries to open a porn site. Talking about his intention behind this move, Dr. Mishra was quoted by The Indian Express as saying, “When I decided to develop this app, I had my children and family in mind and my patients who come in with behavioural problems. 12. With Diwali around the corner, almost everyone is busy buying gifts for their near and dear ones. After all, we all want to surprise them and bring a smile on their faces, right? So, what better way can there be than online shopping to buy the gifts? It's quick, hassle-free and delivers the products at your doorstep. Viraj Nair too wanted to buy a smartphone for his house help and he even bought one online on Amazon. Turns out Viraj was one of those 'lucky' customers, who didn't get ONE smartphone but TWO...bars of soaps. And, not just any soap, he got two bars of 'Ghadi' detergent. After all, 'time' is the most precious gift, so getting 'ghadi' makes all the sense in the world. Looks like the makers of Ghadi's tagline, 'Pehle Istemal Kare Fir Vishwas Kare', knew that the detergent bar will one day fall in Viraj's hands and this line will hit him harder than irony. Facebook/ Viraj Nair In an exclusive conversation with MensXP, Viraj said, "The phone, ordered on Sunday, October 28, was supposed to be delivered by Tuesday, October 30. On the day of the scheduled delivery, I recieved a message from Amazon that the courier guy couldn't reach me so the delivery would be attempted the next day." Viraj, who felt something strange about the delivery guy, said "On Wednesday, October 31, I got a call from a guy asking whether the package has been delivered and I told him I hadn't received it. At 6:30 PM he finally came to my building, entering the wrong address in the register, to deliver the package. He refused to hand over the package before I gave him the OTP. When I opened it, the Honor 8x box was unsealed. To my horror, instead of a smartphone, the box contained two bars of Ghadi soap." Screenshot Viraj immediately contacted Amazon's customer care and they "apologized profusely and said I'd receive a replacement by Nov. 2. No explanation was offered for the Ghadi soap switcheroo, though they promised to 'investigate' the matter." Viraj, who ordered an Honor 8x, left a replacement request on the website as well. Amazon apologized to Viraj and he finally got a box delivered today, which carried a new phone and not a detergent. Even after all this, it wasn't easy for him to get the phone. He said the new delivery guy was asking for the phone back and didn't agree on giving him the replacement phone. "The delivery guy finally left after negotiations with Amazon customer care." Viraj has now ordered One Plus 6T from Amazon and we hope he doesn't get more bars of 'Ghadi' detergent this time. Viraj is not the first guy to receive soap bars instead of a smartphone. Earlier too people have reportedly recieved stones and soaps instead of what they ordered online.
  13. Not everyone enjoys the sound of crackers and the bustle of the Diwali party, and for those of us, heading to a nice peaceful place is the ideal alternative. So we are here to sort out your Diwali plans, with the 7 best places to head to for the festival. Celebrate the festival of lights with a few diyas, some solitude, in one of these brilliant places. Spend time with yourself on a solo trip, or with your loved ones away from the noise, pollution, and the smog. So pack up your backpack, and head to one of these beautiful places. Sikkim © Wikimedia Commons The hills are obviously a great place to head to during this time. Sikkim is a place that sees a lot of rain during the non-winter months, so going right before winter is actually a pretty great time. It's not too hot, it's not too cold, although it is quite nippy. Much of the population there celebrates Diwali, though it is a lot less showy than what you may get in other states. You can head directly to Gangtok now, and check-in in a small village homestay where you can enjoy the simple Diwali. Make sure to pack your trekking gear, and a backpack , as the landscape is perfect for hikes and treks. Andaman Islands © Flickr Before the crowds start flocking to the Andaman Islands come December, take your chance to see it, minus the huge tourist crowd. These secluded islands make for a great escape. And while you are there, you will be far away from any noise pollution, or smog, whatsoever. You do need the whole week for this vacation, so don't pack too light. The weather is quite pleasant during this time as well. Make sure to pack beach essentials into a bag, and some sunscreen. Varanasi © Pixabay Head to Varanasi this Diwali to see the beautiful aarti they are known all over the country for. Although you will see a lot of crowd there, the experience is unlike any other that you will have. The banks of the Ganges are adorned by millions of lights, celebrating the victory of good over evil. As one of the most deeply connected places for Hinduism and its celebrations, the whole atmosphere is filled with culture and a connection to tradition. There may be some crackers and smoke, so be prepared for that, while you soak up the sights of a million lit diyas as you ride on a boat along the river. Rajasthan © Amer Fort/Pixabay Rajasthan's many forts and hills offer something that most places in India cannot give you: a fantastic view of the city. You can pick any of the beautiful and historic cities, or take the week off to cover a few places. You can climb up Nahargarh in Jaipur and look down upon the city with all its houses lit up for Diwali. At Udaipur, spend time by the lake as you experience the fireworks, and the palace, being reflected in the waters. You can also head to Jaisalmer or Kumbhalgarh fort for an authentic Rajput experience. Sri Lanka © Tangalle Beach/ Flickr Sri Lanka is the land of Ravana, so it does have a lot of symbolic significance to Diwali and the story of Ram. Unlike what you may expect, many people there celebrate Diwali. The Hindu population, which is mostly present in the central and eastern part of the island nation, celebrate Diwali with a quaint simplicity. The festival is about the lighting of lamps and distributing sweets, especially sugar figurines called 'misri.' Rent a bungalow along the seaside and enjoy this colourful ceremonies that are relatively quieter and simpler than what we are used to. Hampi © Wikimedia Commons Diwali is celebrated in Hampi in a big way, the wonderful and grand architecture creating the perfect backdrop for the celebrations. The people of Hampi light up the town with lights, and you can walk around during the evening enjoying the sights. The city is also great for backpackers and travelers, so if firecrackers and celebrations in the bazaar area is not your cup of coffee, then spend time at any of the city's cafes. You can also visit the Virupaksha temple to witness some special ceremonial functions during the evening. There is also a local procession where the temple elephant is decked up and participates in the celebration. Bali © Bratan Lake/ Pexels Bali is another one of those rare places that are known for the celebration of Diwali. Although the majority of Indonesia is Muslim, Bali has a decidedly large Hindu population who celebrate the festival of lights in their own way. The legend of Ram and Sita is also a big part of the region's culture and mythology. They celebrate it much like we do here in India, but with local touches. So head to Bali to experience the festival in a new way. Ready to head out into adventure this Diwali?
  14. Asking for dowry is an offensive crime in India, yet almost every other day, we hear stories of women getting harassed for refusing to give dowry. Despite living in the 21st century, people continue to give in to the archaic practice of demanding dowry from the bride's family. While most people succumb to the pressure, there are some who bravely fight for what's right and teach a lesson to those who demand dowry. This is one such instance from Lucknow, where a bride's family members, reportedly, partially shaved the head of the groom, his father and brother. Facebook (for representation) According to the bride's family, the groom's family started making demands five days prior to the wedding and continued to increase the demands every day. According to a report in NDTV, the groom's grandmother said, "They made these demands five days before the wedding. He refused to marry the girl after we said we can't meet his demands. Don't know who tonsured his head." 15. History has it that even the greatest reign comes to an end. One such event occurred in the world of bodybuilding when Shawn Rhoden dethroned Phil Heath, the undisputed champion from the past 7 years and became the 2018 Mr Olympia. Phil must have never imagined that his reign will be terminated by an athlete who was not even in top 3 last year. Shawn acted like 'The Shadow' Dorian Yates. He stayed underground all year and surprised the whole world with his physique. Shawn always impressed the world with his aesthetics but lacked muscle mass as per modern bodybuilding. Before this, the closest he ever came to Mr Olympia crown was in 2016 when he was placed second to Phil Heath. "I have been chasing Phil for such a long time. He has been the champion, and it means a lot to win this." - Shawn Rhoden (After Winning Mr Olympia 2018) © YouTube Shawn's front double bicep pose stole the show. He performed it gracefully and each of his muscles complimented each other. Nothing was lagging and nothing was over dominating. His physique was well balanced, symmetrical and had top notch conditioning. Phil had the edge with huge shoulders, arms and thick and muscular back. But Shawn had better abs, legs and the overall look. This victory is not just special for Shawn but whole bodybuilding community as he is the first athlete to lift the Sandow trophy with a narrow waist. He brought back the prominent V-taper and golden era aesthetics, cutting right through the mass monsters era. This might mean judges are again giving more value to symmetry and balance than just sheer muscle mass. © YouTube What makes his victory even more appreciable is that just seven months ago the 43-year-old bodybuilder was hospitalized due to which he had to miss the Arnold Classic 2018 (The second most prestigious event in Bodybuilding). This was Shawn's 8th Mr Olympia appearance and his win truly signifies that determination and perseverance can do wonders. Plus, we hope that the standard Shawn has reigns for the longest time. 16. It has finally been confirmed that the next OnePlus device will not sport a headphone jack, which has somewhat been a marketing tool for the company. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei said in an interview with TechRadar, "When we started OnePlus, we set out to make the best possible smartphone, but making a great phone doesn't mean putting every component available into the device,” Pei continued to add “As per a survey conducted by OnePlus, around 59 per cent of the OnePlus users do not already own wireless headphones.” © YouTube Pei may not have mentioned the OnePlus 6T by name, however, it can be assumed that the next device will be the 6T. Pei explained that the removal of the headphone jack will free up more space and will allow them to fit in a larger battery. This, in turn, will result in improved battery life which has been one of the most asked features by users. In order to compensate for the removal of the headphone jack, Pei said "We're adding an adapter to the box, allowing you to use your 3.5mm headphones normally," he explained. "We're also making a new version of our Bullets V2 wired headphones, which will have a USB-C connector. © YouTube The removal of the headphone jack will certainly cause inconvenience to users, as the only port on the phone will be used for both chargings and listening to music. This can be particularly annoying if you're low on charge. Having said that, Samsung and LG remain the only two flagship device manufactures that include a headphone jack. We will know more about the OnePlus 6T closer to its launch and how the removal of the headphone jack will affect users. Source: TechRadar
  17. It's a sad day for gamers. In fact, a sad day for young gaming professionals who would compete with each other to test their skills. Two gamers and perhaps multiple others were killed and injured at a mass shooting in Florida, United States. The tournament was for a Madden 19 tournament at the GLHF Game Bar in Jacksonville, Florida. © Twitch Madden is a popular game developed by Electronic Arts, the same company that makes the extremely popular Fifa series. Like the Fifa games, Madden also garners a highly competitive community that likes to test their skill against other players. The incident took place in the middle of the qualifying round and reportedly has left at least four dead, one of which was the shooter who appears to have shot himself. Witnesses claim there were at least two shooters. The motive for the shooting has not been confirmed yet; however, a fellow competitor claimed that the shooter was a fellow player who had been knocked out of the tournament and sought revenge. © Twitch The entire gaming community such as developers, companies and fellow gamers in general have expressed their solidarity for the victims of this incident: OFFICIAL NFL STATEMENT: We are shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific tragedy today in Jacksonville. In fact, they are continuously urging their fans to contribute to relief funds as well. © Reuters While, most celebrities are helping Kerala financially and raising awareness on social media, what actor Randeep Hooda is doing for the flood victims is truly commendable and a noble gesture. Instead of just posting messages and prayers on social media, actor Randeep Hooda has actually travelled to Kerala to provide help to the flood victims and actively participate in the relief work. #EidMubarak ð and thank you for all the wonderful blessings and wishes for my birthday.. feeling blessed to be a part of @Khalsa_Aid team of volunteers helping in #KeralaFloodRelief .. every little step counts.. to help https://t.co/xQXd7ikrus ð pic.twitter.com/eUWEWGfbz2 — Randeep Hooda (@RandeepHooda) August 22, 2018 Hooda has joined as a volunteer with the Khalsa Aid group, a non-profit organisation that has time and again rescued and provided help to people across the world. 19. The power of social media is insane, as it is capable of doing everything and anything beyond your imagination. You can find your life partner on a dating site and some people even marry on Skype. So, when 25-year-old Nilesh Khedekar decided to apologise to his girlfriend Shivde, he thought of going old school and tried being unique. The man posted around 300 banners across Pune city saying 'I'm Sorry' hoping for forgiveness. However, instead of being forgiven, the poor guy got arrested and is now liable to pay a fine of 72,000 Rupees. © Twitter People on Twitter are obviously finding this hilarious. 20. It's sad that such an unfortunate thing brought the entire country together, but everyone's here and willing to help. As everyone knows, Kerala is going through the worst floods ever and people need any help that they can get. With so many people having already lost their lives and way more people having been displaced, losing everything they own, this is the kind of disaster that couldn't just be prayed away. People have come together to donate whatever they can to help, how much or little they can and that includes children, who have so much compassion for fellow humans, it's so great to see. One such kid is a nine-year-old from Tamil Nadu whose gesture is so beautiful, it's rare to see kids act so maturely. Anupriya from Villupuram had saved about Rs 9000 over the course of four years to buy a new bicycle for herself, but she donated all the money for a better cause. Yes, she gave away all the money to the Kerala relief flood and actually set an example for everyone. “I had saved money (around Rs 9000) for over four years to buy a cycle. But I saw visuals of Kerala flood on televisions and decided to give the money (toward relief activities),” she told reporters. Someone tweeted about her selfless gesture and as soon as more people learned about her donation, they had nothing but respect for her kindness. 21. Fact-checking and double checking is very important and looks like a Bengali text publisher learnt that the hard way. Even if the mistake seems quite obvious, sometimes they aren't rectified, and the result is very, very expensive. So, what was the costly mistake of the day? A Bengali textbook put a picture of Farhan Akhtar portraying Milkha Singh in the hit movie 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' instead of the real 'Flying Sikh'. Ouch, that's one bad mistake, it's almost disrespectful. I mean, Milkha Singh has represented the country all over the world and this is how he gets thanked? 22. First of all, you're reading this story in the Technology Section, simply because we do not have a vertical specifically for stupidity. A thief, who happened to be a teenager, broke into a 60-something couple's home in order to steal the most unexpected thing. Many things could have gone wrong, especially when a criminal has broken into your home, however, what happened next is pure millennial stupidity. © YouTube The intruder, please bear with me, actually woke the couple up in the middle of their sleep and asked the password to their Wi-Fi. Yes, even I was like "what the actual f**k?” The masked intruder was obviously declined by the homeowners and was shoved down the hallway and out the front door. The couple obviously called the police before throwing him out. The event took place in Palo Alto, United States and to much surprise, it wasn't the first time this burglar had attempted this stupid act. © Pxhere The Police said that the 17-year-old burglar had attempted another Wi-Fi theft in a home nearby. When he was confronted by the homeowner, he “asked to use their Wi-Fi network because he was out of data,” according to police. The residents obviously told the teenager to bugger off and he rode off on a bike, which the couple later discovered had been stolen from their backyard. As of now, the burglar is facing charges for burglary as well as a misdemeanor count of prowling. We hope this boy realises how stupid his actions were and what led to his eventual arrest. New Rule - if you run out of data on your phone, don't go breaking into people's homes for the Wi-Fi password. Just recharge your phone for additional data as it would be a cheaper ordeal. Geez! 23. Every group has two kinds of friends – one that makes plans and one that cancels it at the last minute, leading to the whole plan getting canceled. For some reason, a Goa trip plan always happens to be the one to bear the brunt of the latter. Well, it seems now most of us will shift to the latter group and start keeping Goa out of all vacation plans. Reason? Post August 15, you might end up paying a heavy fine for drinking alcohol at public places in Goa. Reportedly, chief minister Manohar Parrikar said that the fine for littering and carrying plastic bags will also go up from next month. © Pexels Addressing a gathering after opening the incubation centre at the Economic Development Corporation, he said “There is something called civic responsibility. The footpath which is developed along the river in Panaji city is being used by the people for drinking beer.” He further added, “There will be heavy fine for drinking in public from the next month. We will implement the decision from August 15 onwards”. © BCCL Although it is being said that the fine will be imposed from August 15, how much one might have to pay isn't mentioned. But, what we do know is that the fine of carrying plastic bags will be increased from Rs. 100 to Rs. 2500. “Every day we get the old bridge cleaned up. Every day I see some flowers being thrown on it. People think that they are doing great religious service by throwing flower in the water. You can throw flowers in water but not in plastic bags,” he further said. © Wikimedia This ban might come as a sudden shock to a lot of people, but what Parrikar said does make sense. We can't ruin a beautiful travel destination in the name of fun. Let us know what you think about this decision. Source: Hindustan Times
