The Mewar Dynasty © Twitter/WadiyarDynasty After the death of the last heir of Mysore, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, The Wadiyar dynasty adopted another son named Yaduveer Gopal Raj Urs who became the monarch of the royal family. His coronation ceremony took place on 28th May, 2015. 10. Itâs certainly looking like a busy, bittersweet week ahead for ex-Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. This Monday, he was nominated for a seat at the Rajya Sabha by none other than President Ram Nath Kovind - amidst widespread accusations of partisanship hurled from opposition politicians and media platforms. © Reuters; Police detain protestors in May 2019, who had assembled to demonstrate after a sexual harassment allegation against Gogoi was dismissed by a chair headed by Justice Bobde, who succeeded Gogoi as Chief Justice. Itâs a symbolic move in more ways than one. President Kovind had been a practicing lawyer for 16 years before entering politics, and had his own 1994-2006 stint in the Rajya Sabha. Concurrently, Gogoi took a slightly different path, forging a 42-year long career through the trenches of Indiaâs courtrooms. Here are a few details that most donât know about the 46th Chief Justice. Royal Lineage © DNA India Looks like the legacy goes even further back than Ranjan Gogoi himself. On his maternal side, the judge can trace his lineage back to Prandar Singha, the last king of the Ahom kingdom of Assam. The dynasty itself is incredibly old, dating back to the early 1200s - it lasted for over 600 years before collapsing under festering internal politics, attacks from Burmese invaders and finally, fell into British rule in 1826. Almost A Soldier © Assam Times In a 2018 interview with The Times Of India, Ranjan Gogoiâs elder brother Anjan Kumar Gogoi opened up about his childhood with the ex-CJI. Narrating a particular episode from their youth, he displayed a penchant for mischievousness that might have ended up changing his brotherâs life. âWe both were selected to join Sainik School Goalpara (A top-quality military boarding school) but our father said that only one of us could go and asked to decide for ourselves who would stay back. We decided to toss a coin, and being naughty, I used the famous line, heads I win, tails you lose. I won. Maybe had he gone to the Sainik School, he could have achieved greater heights than meâ¦he was far better in studies than me.â While Ranjan was destined for law, Anjan went on to become an IAF fighter pilot, retiring from the air force as an Air Marshall. The Honest Brother © Assam Times Despite his recent allegations, ex-Justice Gogoi had strong roots in honesty, according to his elder brother. âYou canât possibly predict what can happen to you in the future but one thing I can tell as an elder brother that since childhood he (Justice Gogoi) showed indications that he treads only on the right path. I still remember when playing a game of marble, I, as the elder brother and somewhat naughty, tried to cheat. He would always challenge my game and tell me not to break the rules. From the very beginning, he always followed the right path and rules. When he took up law, I knew he would make a good lawyer, who would not take any false case just for the sake of practicing law. When he became a judge, I knew he would be a good judge,â the ex-fighter pilot said. A Student With Something To Prove © Wikimedia Later on in his youth, Gogoi would be given an ultimatum by his father, Kesab Chandra Gogoi who was a politician himself - to crack the UPSC examinations. Putting aside his latent interest in law and history, Gogoi reinforced his reputation as a keen academic by cracking the UPSC exam and on presenting his father with the results, politely said that he would rather prefer to become an advocate instead. Soon, he graduated with honors in history from St. Stephenâs college, before earning his law degree from Delhi University. Career As A Lawyer © Wikimedia Gogoiâs introduction to advocacy began in 1978, when he passed the bar and began to practice at the Gauhati High Court. After 23 years, he was made a permanent Judge of the same, and then appointed to the Punjab and Haryana High Courts in 2010 by then-President Pratibha Patil. He quickly rose to the position of Chief Justice there, and by 2012 was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court. Six years later in 2018, he would succeed Dipak Misra as the Chief Justice of India. Amitabh Bachchanâs Kaun Banega Crorepati Tax Case © Reuters While Gogoi has presided over several landmark cases, one of his more unusual ones revolves around none other than Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan. Way back in 2002, Bachchan filed tax returns showing an income of Rs 14.99 crore, yet the tax authorities determined that his income was Rs 56.41 crore and filed a lawsuit against the actor. The Bombay High Court dismissed the tax officials in 2012, but Gogoi and his bench quashed the dismissal in 2016. Guess he wasnât a fan. An ex-Chief Ministerâs Son © Assam Legislative Assembly Ranjan Gogoiâs aforementioned father Kesab Chandra never got to see his son become a judge, dying just three years too early. Regardless, he did make a pretty bold impact on Assam as a politician with the Indian National Congress - the very rivals of the figures that have backed Gogoi Jr. in contemporary View the full article

  15. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to pay rent for their Frogmore Cottage home after royal exitPrince Harry and Meghan Markle had stirred up a storm earlier following their decision to step away as British royal family's senior members. And as they gradually move into their ‘ordinary’ lives after giving up the royal HRH [his or her royal highness] titles, reports are suggesting that their royal allowances will now be brought to a halt as well. It was also revealed that prior to their indefinite move to Canada, the couple will also have to pay rent to their Frogmore Cottage home which came as a gift to the two by Queen Elizabeth when they tied the knot in 2018. Since the property was originally said to be ‘dilapidated’, the pair had used around $3 million of taxpayer money to renovate the home which is why they will now have to pay the public back for the consumed amount, as they no longer wish to be part of the British royals. In a statement released by the palace, shedding light on their step-down-agreement, it was stated: "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home." On the other hand, it was also revealed that the two will pay rent for the property as they wish to keep the gift handed to them by the Queen. Royal expert Katie Nicoll revealed to Vanity Fair: “They will keep the residence, a wedding gift from the Queen; however they will pay rent on the property."
  16. Meghan Markle’s estranged father, Thomas Markle, accused his daughter of “cheapening” the British royal family in part of an interview released a day after Buckingham Palace said Prince Harry and his wife would no longer be working members of the monarchy. The palace announced on Saturday that the couple would no longer use their “Royal Highness” titles and would pay their own way in life. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the whole country wished them “the very best” with the new arrangement. “As I said before ... I was sure that the royal family, which has been around a very long time, will find a way forward,” Johnson told Sky News in Germany, where he was attending a summit on Libya. The monarchy was thrown into turmoil earlier this month when Harry and his American former actress wife announced that they wanted to reduce their official duties and spend more time in North America. Saturday’s announcement from the palace followed discussions in recent days between Queen Elizabeth, her family and officials over how this would work in practice for Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38. Thomas Markle told Channel 5 news in a documentary that he believed Meghan was tossing away “every girl’s dream”. “It’s disappointing because she actually got every girl’s dream. Every young girl wants to become a princess and she got that and now she’s tossing that away, for, it looks like she’s tossing that away for money,” he said. The interview was filmed after the couple’s announcement that they would step back as senior members of the royal family. Channel 5 released part of the interview on Sunday and said the full documentary would air “in the coming weeks”. ‘LOST SOULS’Thomas Markle described the royal family as “one of the greatest long-living institutions ever”, saying that when Meghan married Harry in May 2018 they took an obligation “to be part of the royals and to represent the royals”. “This is like one of the greatest long-living institutions ever,” he said. "They are destroying it, they are cheapening it, they’re making it shabby. They are turning it into a Walmart with a crown of it now. It is something that is ridiculous, they shouldn’t be doing this.” Thomas Markle and his daughter have been estranged since her marriage to Harry. Earlier this month, the Mail on Sunday newspaper submitted its defense to court action by Meghan over the publication of a private letter she sent to her father. Thomas Markle said he did not expect Meghan to get in contact.
  17. Meghan Markle visited the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre in Canada since stepping back as senior members of royal family. Photo: Twitter VANCOUVER: Prince Harry's wife Meghan has visited a women's shelter in Vancouver, her first public appearance since the couple's sensational decision to pursue greater independence from the British monarchy by living part-time in Canada. The Duchess of Sussex visited the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre on Tuesday and met with staffers. The centre is a non-profit organisation that provides support to women who are fleeing violence, dealing with homelessness or living in poverty. It offers daily hot meals, counselling, clothing, showers, toiletries and more. It serves about 500 women a day. On a cold, uncharacteristically snowy day, the centre was bustling, as women from diverse ethnic backgrounds and all ages gathered in its main hall. Still bundled in their coats, many sat around tables and on sofas sipping hot beverages, using their phones, chatting and warming up. Markle met with the director and a handful of frontline staff to discuss the challenges women in the neighbourhood are facing. "She was very interested in what goes on for women in this community, who we all know are marginalized women who've faced many challenges and barriers to their wellbeing," said Kate Gibson, the acting executive director of the centre. "She was interested, she was informed, she had great questions, followed up with questions on things that the staff had spoken about," Gibson added. Prince Harry, sixth in line to the throne, and Meghan last week announced they intend to step back as senior royals and strive to become financially independent, splitting their time between Britain and Canada where they spent six weeks over Christmas with baby son Archie. They are now in talks with senior royals about how their wished-for new roles within the monarchy could work. The Daily Mail also published photos of Meghan in a parka, boarding a seaplane from Victoria, British Columbia, where she's currently staying, to Vancouver for the shelter visit. Paying for the relocation Earlier, an Angus Reid Institute survey said that despite Canadians' affection for the royal couple, a large majority (73 per cent) do not wish to foot security or other costs for their relocation. Nineteen percent said they'd agree to cover part of the costs, while only three per cent agreed with Canada paying all of the costs. Canadian media have estimated the costs of protecting Prince Harry and Meghan at approximately Can1.7 million (US$1.3 million) per year. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government has yet to take a position publicly on the matter, saying there are "discussions going on," while extending a warm welcome to the couple. The survey of 1,154 Canadians on Monday and Tuesday also found that while respect and affection for Queen Elizabeth II — Canada's head of state — is broad-based and strong, Canadians are "at a crossroads" over future ties with the monarchy. Most say the House of Windsor has lost relevance, while only 39 percent believe Canada should continue as a constitutional monarchy after the queen, who has reigned for 66 years, dies. Paradoxically, support for Prince Harry is much higher. He is viewed among Canadians as the most personally popular member of the royal family, with 69 per cent viewing him favorably.
  18. The much awaited film Tanhaji hit the screens on January 10. Directed and co-written by Om Raut, Tanhaji is an adaptation of the lore of the Battle of Sinhagad in 1670 between the Maratha King Shivaji and the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Besides doing extremely well at the box office, if there's one thing that people can't stop talking about, it's the multiple beard styles seen on-screen in the film. And here's the best part, you can actually get them from your local salon if you just take a picture reference. (Chances are, your barber has seen the film too which means you can get the exact look.) 1. Pornstache © Ajay Devgn FFilms Ajay Devgn's character as Tanhaji can be seen in a pornstache or otherwise known as a weighted moustache. Although the pornstar moustache has different variations, the most popular one can be defined as a thick, heavy moustache with slightly elongated ends and no accompanying facial hair. A similar version can also be seen on Ajay Devgn. 2. Short Boxed Beard © Ajay Devgn FFilms Uday Bhan played by Saif Ali Khan can be seen sporting short boxed beard. Now, here's the thing. A short boxed beard can be defined as a short moustache with a medium length beard as can be seen on Saif. The beard is fuller and covers relatively more surface on the face as can be seen. 3. Handlebar Moustache with Beard © Ajay Devgn FFilms Sharad Kelkar's character in Tanhaji can be seen in a visibly defined handlebar 'stache. But the look has been given a twist with an additional beard. If you think that a handlebar on its own is over the top, adding a beard to the picture can be a gamechanger. 4. The Weighted Beard © Ajay Devgn FFilms Aurangzeb played by Luke Kenny sported a weighted beard which is characterised with a relatively fuller beard with a fine moustache. This beard is the polar opposite of a weighted moustache where the emphasis is on the 'stache. View the full article
  19. It was nothing short of a fairytale coming true when Meghan Markle got married to Prince Harry. Almost everyone across the globe seemed to be talking only about them. Fast forward to the present time and people are still talking about them. The world went into a mini shock when the Duke of Sussex Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle announced that they are stepping down from their roles as "senior royals". Their long note on social media, Prince Harry's friends sharing "anecdotes" about what could have possibly led to the exit and Madame Tussauds London moving their wax figures away from the royal family further fuelled the fire around what people are calling "Megxit". View this post on Instagram “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” - The Duke and Duchess of Sussex For more information, please visit sussexroyal.com (link in bio) Image © PA A post shared by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex (@sussexroyal) on Jan 8, 2020 at 10:33am PST How often do you see a man going against his family and leaving them behind to be with and protect his true love? 20. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are on the road to inherit tax payments if they choose to abdicate. Photo: AFPThe Duke and Duchess of Sussex are on the road to inherit tax payments, greater than they might have expected, if they choose to abdicate from their role as senior royals of Queen Elizabeth II's court, reported Daily Mail. The financial impact could very well have "stark implications" on Harry due to amounting bills and taxes post his and his wife, former American actor Meghan Markle's decision to step back as senior royals. According to official sources, Prince Harry's visit to Sandringham, next week will be a "reality check moment" for the 35-year-old, as he will be presented in person in front of the Queen and Prince William. Meghan will be partaking in the discussion via a telephonic conversation, the British tabloid said. A source close to the Queen told the Daily Mail that a solution that is "compatible with taxpayers, compatible with reality and compatible with the Queen" is being sought out. During the meeting in Sandringham, the prince is said to receive a reality check with potential "double tax" on any commercial income. As well as, taxes on maintenance for Frogmore Cottage, his home in Windsor, if he and his wife abdicate from their role as senior royals. The Daily Mail estimates that the overall bill could potentially be over millions of pounds. Prince Harry will also be double taxed if he spends more than 183 days in Canada in one stretch of time. As a result of these potentially mounting bills, Harry might have to make a drastic decision, either to give up his UK residency, or limit his time in Canada. If he does not then he might be double-taxed on any and all commercial income he earns, from both Britain, as well as Canada. The Duchess of Sussex already pays American taxes on any income she earns overseas as an US citizen and this could potentially add to the overall cost of living, post royal life. The couple might also be charged with hefty bills on any kind of funding they receive from Prince Charles's estate and have to pay commercial level taxes for Frogmore Cottage Currently the couple also receive funding, amounting to almost £2.4 million, mostly from Prince Charles. A royal source told The Mail on Sunday, "This meeting will give the Duke and Duchess an unvarnished look at the full implications of their choices." "Lots of assumptions have been made about how things can work, but this will be the time for workable decisions to be made in the full knowledge of the consequences and implications, however unappealing," the source added.
