    LAHORE: In view of soaring temperatures, the Government of Punjab has decided that summer vacations in public schools and colleges across the province will start from May 23, sources told Geo News Saturday.
    Sources within the Punjab Education Department said the early start of summer vacations has been announced due to prevailing hot weather and the arrival of Ramazan.
    They, however, said that private educational institutes have refused to accept the directives. They say that they have already scheduled exams until May 30 and this is why it would not be possible for them to close down from May 23.
    Talks were held between the government and private schools representatives on the issue, but a consensus could not be reached.
    However, both sides are still agreed for further negotiating the matter.
    Usually, summer vacations in Punjab start in the first week of June, each year.

    ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Saturday met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and discussed with him inquiry report into Dawn Leaks and government notification issued in this regard, sources told Geo News.
    Sources said the two figures discussed the inquiry report and the notification issued by the government on recommendations by the inquiry committee formed to probe the leaks. The meeting also discussed orders issued by PM's secretary in this regard.
    The cross-border attack by Afghan forces in Chaman also came under discussion at the meeting, they added.
    Saturday's meeting between Nisar and the prime minister was the second such meeting in less than 48 hours.
    On April 29, the federal cabinet division issued a notification, ordering the withdrawal of the portfolio of Foreign Affairs from the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi.
    “In terms of rule 4(6) of the Rules of Business, 1973, the Prime Minister has been pleased to withdraw the portfolio of Foreign Affairs, with immediate effect, from Mr Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister with the status of Minister of State,” the notification read.
    The notification was issued because of Fatemi's alleged role in Dawn leaks case.
    According to 4(6) of Rules of Business 1973, the Prime Minister has the right to determine his special assistants. “There may be a Special Assistant or Special Assistants to the Prime Minister with such status and functions as may be determined by the Prime Minister,” it reads.
    However, the military rejected the government notification on Dawn Leaks saying it was "incomplete and not in line with recommendations by the Inquiry Board."
    How did it start?
    An English-language daily, Dawn, had published the story on October 6, last year, in which journalist Cyril Almeida had written about an alleged civil-military rift during a National Security Committee (NSC) meeting over the issue of tackling jihadi outfits.
    The story stirred a major controversy last year, resulting in resignation of Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed and Almeida coming under fire.
    An inquiry committee was formed comprising one member each from the ISI, MI and IB, Secretary Establishment, Tahir Shahbaz, Ombudsman Punjab Najam Saeed, and an FIA director.
    The inquiry committee in its report had placed blame on Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi and Principal Information Officer at the Press Information Department Rao Tehsin, sources had earlier told Geo News.
    The report stated that the publishing of the story was a failure on part of some government institutions including Information Ministry and Foreign Ministry.

    KANO, Nigeria: Scores of Nigerian schoolgirls who were among more than 200 kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014 have been released, multiple sources told AFP on Saturday, with unconfirmed reports that at least 80 have been freed.
    "I can confirm they have been released," said a senior government minister, who asked not to be identified, adding that an official statement would be released later.
    A military and a civilian militia source in Banki, near the border with Cameroon, said "at least 80" girls were brought to the town late afternoon on Saturday.
    "The girls are now lodged in the military barracks and will be flown to (the Borno state capital) Maiduguri tomorrow (Sunday)," said the military source.
    The civilian militia member and a resident at the camp in Banki for those displaced by the Boko Haram conflict gave an identical account.
    Enoch Mark, a Christian pastor whose two daughters were among those kidnapped, said he was told of the release by the Bring Back Our Girls pressure group and an official in Maiduguri.
    He added: "This is good news to us. We have been waiting for this day. We hope the remaining girls will soon be released."
    Bring Back Our Girls said it was awaiting an official statement but added: "Our hopes and expectations are high as we look forward to this news being true and confirmed."
    Boko Haram fighters stormed the Government Girls Secondary School in the remote town of Chibok on the evening of April 14, 2014 and kidnapped 276 teenaged girls who were preparing to sit high school exams.
    Fifty-seven managed to escape in the hours that followed but the remaining 219 were held by the group.
    Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, whose fight to create a hardline Islamic state in northeast Nigeria has left at least 20,000 dead since 2009, claimed in a video message that they had converted to Islam.
    The audacious kidnapping brought the insurgency to world attention, triggering global outrage that galvanised support from the former US first lady Michelle Obama and Hollywood stars.
    Ongoing talks
    Twenty-one girls were released in October last year after talks between Boko Haram and the Nigerian government brokered by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Swiss government.
    Three others were also found. The first had a baby and was accompanied by a man she said was her husband but the military said was a Boko Haram suspect.
    Boko Haram has previously said it would release the girls if militant fighters held in Nigerian government custody were freed.
    It was not immediately clear whether a prisoner swap was involved in the latest round of releases.
    At the time of the release of the 21, President Muhammadu Buhari´s spokesman Garba Shehu said the government was hoping to secure the release of 83 others being held by a different Boko Haram faction.
    Last month he said in a radio interview that there were ongoing negotiations involving "some foreign entities" to release the 195 girls still believed held.
    He told BBC Hausa the ICRC and Swiss government "have not withdrawn their support in the negotiations".
    Other countries were also involved, he added, without elaborating.
    The ICRC has not yet commented on the latest release.
    Parents and supporters of the missing girls last month marked the three year anniversary of the abduction, describing the situation as an unending "nightmare".
    But they said previous releases had given them strength.
    On Friday, Britain and the United States issued a security alert warning of a Boko Haram plot to kidnap foreigners in the Banki area, which led to the suspension of aid flights to the town Saturday.
    Boko Haram has used kidnapping as a weapon of war, seizing thousands of women and children, including the Chibok girls, and forcibly recruiting young men and boys into their ranks.
    In a less publicised attack in November 2014, some 300 children were among about 500 people kidnapped from the town of Damasak, on the border with Niger, in the far north of Borno state.
    Most are still missing.

    KARACHI: Minister of State for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb remarked on Saturday that the Prime Minister wants restoration of Pakistan film industry.
    The restoration of the film industry is the need of hour. “We are trying our best to save film industry from deterioration,” she said while speaking at Pakistan Film Policy Consultation Conference 2017 event in the port city.
    If filmmakers want to import equipment then government is more than willing to cooperate with them, she claimed.
    The government wants to start focusing on filmmaking now, she said, adding that Pakistan’s first film policy will be announced soon.
    “I am thankful to Governor Sindh for opening the doors of Governor House for Pakistan’s film industry,” she remarked. The doors of Governor House can never close for people affiliated with film industry, she claimed.
    She also shared that financial programmes and professional academies will be established across the country for the benefit of the film industry. 
    Governor Sindh Muhammad Zubair was also present at the occasion.
    Earlier, Marriyum Aurganzeb had underlined the need for revival of Pakistan film industry while speaking at the event’s inaugural ceremony on Friday.
    "With the revival of film industry, we can spread message of tolerance and peace in the masses,” she said.

    RAWALPINDI: Indian Army resorted to ceasefire violation again and injured four civilians including women and children at Line of Control (LoC) on Saturday, an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said.
    According to the statement, Indian forces targetted civilian population with mortars in village Thruti in Nakiyal sector.
    As a result of the firing, 65-year-old Barkat Begum w/o M Nazir, 12-year-old Ihsan Naseer s/o M Naseer, 42-year-old Naseer Ahmad s/o Nazir Ahmad, 35-year-old Farzana Kausar w/o M Naseer got injured.
    Pakistani troops effectively responded to silent Indian firing.

    Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said a new airport in Pakistan's capital will be operational by mid-August, replacing the cramped Benazir Bhutto International Airport that has been criticised by many travellers.

    Sharif's government is spending billions of dollars on upgrading Pakistan's transport infrastructure and ending energy blackouts, with freshly-paved motorways as well as dams and power plants popping up across the country.

    Sharif touts big-ticket infrastructure as sign of economic progress in the country of nearly 200 million people, and many of the projects will be finished ahead of the elections, likely in the middle of 2018.

    "We have focused on this Islamabad airport project and we are completing it on a fast pace," Sharif told PTV, during an inspection of the glass-clad airport.

    "The speed of completion of projects should be good at countries that want to progress."

    The Benazir Bhutto airport currently servicing Islamabad is actually located in the nearby city of Rawalpindi, and attached to a military base.

    International travellers often complain about chaotic scenes at the airport and in 2014 it was voted the worst in the world by the "Guide to Sleeping in Airports" website, prompting widespread criticism of the airport in the media.

    The new airport, which has been long delayed, will become operational on August 14. Officials say 95 percent of the work is completed on the new facility.

    NAIROBI: At least 29 final year primary school pupils were killed in a bus crash in northern Tanzania on Saturday, along with two teachers and the driver, the school´s director said.
    "We lost 29 students and two of our staff, and the driver died too," said Innocent Mushi, director of the Lucky Vincent Primary School in the northern city of Arusha, which the children attended. The dead included 12 boys and 17 girls, he said.
    At least three survivors were pulled from the crash site by rescuers and rushed to hospital.
    "It´s a huge tragedy," Mushi said.
    The accident happened early on Saturday when the bus went off the road and into the Marera river gorge in Karatu district.
    The final year primary pupils -- commonly aged between 12 and 14 years old -- were on their way to sit mock examinations ahead of seeking places at secondary school.
    President John Magufuli sent his condolences to the families of the dead.
    "This accident extinguishes the dreams of these children who were preparing to serve the nation, it is an immense pain for the families involved and for the whole nation," Magufuli said in a statement.

    KARACHI: A low water level in Thatta’s Keenjhar lake has spiked concerns of a shortage of water in the provincial metropolis, whose residents are already facing water woes.
    The water level of Keenjhar, which is the major source of water to Karachi, has fallen to 47 feet as supply from Indus water has halted. Water supply to Karachi would stop if the level tumbles to 42 feet.
    Everyday 1,200 cusecs are supplied to the city from the lake.
    Last year, the level had gone to 52 feet.
    Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi, however, said that the situation is not as alarming, adding that the level will be maintained at 50 feet in the next two days.
    “The irrigation department takes corrective measures to maintain the level at 50 feet as soon the level drops to 47 feet,” he explained.

    LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari remarked that the ruling government’s promises and claims have proven to be false.
    He also said that reminding the rulers of their promises has surprisingly provoked them. Zardari said this during a meeting with senior leaders of PPP pertaining to change of strategy regarding Punjab on Saturday.
    “No matter how much they try, they can’t be saved now,” he remarked, adding that the party will remind the rulers of their promises.  
    The meeting participants also decided that they need a united stand in electoral cooperation and protest against Punjab government.
    During the meeting, Zardari tasked Manzoor Ahmed Watto, Sardar Latif Khosa, Qamar Zaman Kaira to ensure the people get their rights.
    Participants also resolved that PPP's nationwide protests against load-shedding will continue.

    KARACHI: The younger daughter of former president Asif Ali Zardari, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari has called for stricter rules to prevent students from easily cheating in the examination halls.
    In her message on social media following reports of cheating in the examination halls and leak of papers through WhatsApp groups using Indian number in Karachi, Aseefa said, “There needs to be stricter rules to prevent students from easily cheating. A start should be banning mobiles from exam rooms.”
    Earlier, Sindh Education Minister Jam Mehtab Dehar claimed that Indian mobile phone SIMs were being used in leaking question papers for the ongoing Board of Intermediate Education examinations in the province.
    Shortly afterwards, the provincial government launched an extraordinary crackdown against the cheating mafia, as Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah handed over the investigation to the Counter-Terrorism Department of Sindh Police.
    Earlier this week, the mathematics paper for intermediate part-II also reached candidates before time, after authorities were made aware of WhatsApp groups being used for cheating.
    Five exam question papers have been leaked this year. Examination rooms have been hit by a wave of tech-savvy cheating techniques.

    AWARAN: Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa said on Saturday that Pakistan Army shall continue to facilitate development efforts in Balochistan, according to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).
    During a visit to Awaran, COAS was briefed about the security situation and community assistance initiatives by Army and Frontier Constabulary in southern Balochistan.

    He was also briefed that almost 150,000 individuals have benefitted from medical initiatives including an active partnership with civil administration to enhance the capacity of DHQ Awaran.

    About 200 students from Awaran are also being provided free education, with boarding and lodging by Army and FC. Recently, a new school has also been established by FC Balochistan.
    COAS lauded efforts of Army, FC and other LEAs which have resulted in improved security, and law and order situation.
    Later, the COAS also met local elders and notables, who appreciated Pakistan Army's efforts for security and development in the area.
    COAS acknowledged and thanked the locals for their support to security forces.
    Earlier, on arrival, COAS was received by Commander Southern Command Lieutenant General Aamir Riaz.

    A right-wing Hindu organisation in India is training its members to take on stone-pelters in Kashmir along with the army personnel deployed in the valley.
    According to Indian media, 1,000 members of Kanpur-based Jan Sena will leave for the valley along with a truck loaded with stones to respond to attacks by Kashmiris.
    The organisation’s head said that the members have been trained in stone-slinging, adding that they are planning to open training centres in Kanpur and adjoining areas to train members “the art of stone-slinging”. A video has also emerged showing volunteers receiving training.
    The public army was formed late last month with 13,000 people registering for membership, Jan Sena’s head had said. He had also said that he plans to raise it to the national level.
    Violence in Kashmir has spiked since the last months with several videos of Indian forces’ brutality surfacing.
    Disgruntled Kashmiris, including teenage girls, have resorted to stone-pelting on security personnel, blamed for routinely torturing and raping the valley’s residents.
    On Thursday, Indian forces launched a massive operation in the valley and cordoned off more than 20 villages in Shopian district of Occupied Kashmir, Indian media reported on Thursday, in the wake of a surge in rebel attacks on the occupying forces in recent weeks.

    KARACHI: Central Jail’s construction contractor has been held responsible for an attempted jailbreak by a female prisoner on April 30, according to an inquiry report.
    Moreover, two female officers have also been suspended for their carelessness in the matter.
    An inquiry report by DIG Jail explained that Central Jail’s construction contractor has been held responsible as the security post in the site was not constructed in a timely manner which affected the police’s invigilation.
    In addition, two female constables, who were deployed from where the female prisoner managed to escape, were also suspended. The two officers are also being investigated and a case has been registered against them.
    Strict action should be taken against the prison’s construction contractor, the report urged.   
    On April 30, a female prisoner was caught while trying to escape the Central Jail. The prisoner had climbed the jail’s wall, which is on the side of the PIB Colony. The incident came into notice after the area residents saw the woman climbing the wall and then complained. The police then immediately reached the site and took the female prisoner back to the jail.

    ISLAMABAD: India has not issued medical visas to Pakistani patients seeking treatment in India since the last two months, it was reported on Saturday.
    The Indian government has made it difficult for Pakistani patients to seek treatment in India, which has affected thousands of Pakistani who suffer from liver, kidney and heart diseases.
    Many Pakistani patients with liver, kidney and heart diseases travel to India every year for treatment. However, reports have emerged that these patients have continually being denied visas since last two months.
    Indian High Commission did not give a satisfactory response when contacted.
    Earlier, the Indian High Commission had denied visas to Pakistani wrestlers, who were going to represent Pakistan in the Asian Wrestling Championship, which will be held in India from May 10 to May 14.
    The move comes in response to the escalating tensions between the two neighbouring countries following Pakistan announcing death sentence of Indian spy Kulbushan Jadhav.

    The relations have also been strained due to ongoing Indian atrocities in occupied Kashmir. Pakistan has rejected Indian surgical strikes and continued to condemn killing of innocent Kashmirs by Indian forces in occupied Kashmir.

    CHAMAN: The administration of Chaman area on Saturday directed residents of villages near the Afghanistan border to vacate the area in wake of tensions after Afghan forces opened fire on Frontier Corps Balochistan soldiers a day earlier, killing at least 11 and injuring several others.
    Deputy Commissioner Chaman Qaiser Khan said that residents of Kali Luqman, Kali Jahangir and other villages bordering Afghanistan gave been directed through loudspeakers and pamphlets to immediately vacate their areas and move to safer locations.
    He added that the flag meeting between senior army officials of the two countries to discuss border situation is under way at the Bab-e-Dosti gate for the second consecutive day.
    The Afghan delegation will also be pressed to permit continuing of census in Kali Luqman and Kali Jehangir.
    The meeting held last night had ended inconclusively.
    The Pakistan-Afghanistan Chaman border remained closed for the second consecutive day on Saturday.
    Nineteen Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) trucks reached the site to aid those affected by the attack.
    “Over 2,000 families near the Chaman border were affected by the firing by Afghan forces,” DG Disaster Management Authority Balochistan Muhammad Tariq Hussain said. “Relief supplies have been sent their way.”
    Distribution of relief supplies by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority to the affected areas have started. Supplies include tents, blankets, tarpaulins, utensils and food items.
     
    Deputy Commissioner Khan said that in the first phase the supplies will be distributed among the families of people martyred and wounded in the firing.

    SARGODHA: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif remarked on Saturday that Pakistan will give a befitting reply to all actions on the border while speaking about Afghan firing near the Chaman border, in which 11 were martyred and 46 injured. 
    “If our borders are violated and further destruction occurs then those responsible will have to pay the price. We will avenge those who cause us destruction,” he urged while speaking to media in Sargodha.
    He further added that Delhi-Kabul nexus is apparent on Pakistan’s western border.
    The firing was carried out to take attention away from Afghanistan’s inner politics, he remarked.  
    “Afghanistan has realised that it was at fault during yesterday’s operation. We are hoping for a positive cooperation with Afghanistan to resolve the matters. However, we have not gotten a positive response from Afghanistan to improve relations,” Asif said.  
    He also claimed that Afghan government needs to formulate a solution to finish terrorism.

    Afghan border forces opened fire on Frontier Corps Balochistan soldiers deployed for security of census team near the Chaman border on Friday.
    Earlier, the Inter-Services Public Relations statement said one civilian was martyred and at least 18 injured in the cross-border firing and shelling. The injured include four FC soldiers who were on security duty of the population census team.  
    Earlier in the day, Deputy Medical Superintendent at Civil Hospital Dr Akhtar confirmed nine civilians had died and 42 had been injured as a result of the firing and shelling.
    Deputy Commissioner Qaiser Khan earlier said a woman was killed when a mortar shell fell on her house. 
    He also said all schools in the locale had been closed for an indefinite period. He advised residents to avoid going to the rooftops of their houses, following the incident.
    The unprovoked firing by Afghan forces, with both light and heavy arms, began at 4am Friday morning, security officials said earlier. Pakistani security forces at the time effectively responded to the firing and shelling from the Afghan side, security personnel said.

    India launched a communications satellite on Friday for its smaller neighbours to share, part of its efforts to build goodwill in the region and counter Chinese influence, but arch-rival Pakistan said it would stay away from the project.
    Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who came to office promising to strengthen ties with neighbours such as Sri Lanka, Nepal and even Pakistan, has called the satellite a gift to south Asia.
    "The successful launch of South Asia Satellite is a historic moment. It opens up new horizons of engagement," he said soon after an Indian-made rocket carrying the satellite lifted off from the Sriharikota space centre in southern India.
    So far Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Maldives have signed up to make use of the satellite. Pakistan said it was working on its own satellite and did not join.
    The South Asia Satellite will offer participating countries television services and communications technology for bank ATMs and e-governance, and may even serve as a backup for cellular networks, especially in places where the terrestrial connectivity is weak, the Indian foreign ministry said.
    India is trying to push back against China's expanding involvement in infrastructure building across south Asia, by offering financial and technical aid of its own.
    Modi said the leaders of the participating countries had joined him in a video conference to mark the launch.
    Ties with Pakistan remain difficult, with the Indian government this week accusing Pakistan of killing and then mutilating the bodies of two soldiers on patrol on the disputed Kashmir border, provoking calls for retribution. Pakistan denied the accusation.

    SRINAGAR: A 12-year-old Pakistani boy was arrested by the Indian army after he mistakenly crossed the Line of Control in Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district.
    The Indian army alleged that the child, Ashfaq Ali Chauhan, was sent for spying by the Pakistan Army.

    On May 4, Indian forces cordoned off more than 20 villages in Shopian district of Occupied Kashmir, in the wake of a surge in rebel attacks on the occupying forces in recent weeks.
    According to NDTV, more than 3,000 personnel of the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force and Jammu and Kashmir police were involved in the search operation launched early Thursday morning.
    "Over 30 companies of Indian forces have besieged villages in Shopian since 3 am looking for armed fighters," IoK local Faysal tweeted.

    A few days ago, similar raids were carried out at various places in Kulgam, as well as adjoining Shopian following a tip off about the presence of two people suspected of involvement in the killing of seven people including five Indian policemen, according to a report by the Press Trust of India.

    On April 22, Indian troops martyred two Kashmiri youth in Budgam district of the occupied valley.
    According to Kashmir Media Service, the youth were martyred during a siege and search operation at Hayatpora area of Chadoora in the district.
    Innocent civilians were beaten by Indian troops during the operation, which led to clashes between Indian troops and the youth, locals reported.

    ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday visited the new Islamabad International Airport here near Fateh Jang to observe the latest development and inaugurate the Metro bus link to the location.
    The PM spoke to media after laying the foundation stone of the Metro bus service’s new route. “The project will be completed with the airport, which emphasises on the steady progress of other related developments,” he said.
    In addition, Sharif said that quality will not be compromised on for this project, explaining that “once it is complete, we will build roads that will benefit farmers and pave way for schools and colleges”.
    The project, under the management of National Highway Authority, cost almost Rs. 18 billion and comprises four interchanges and fourteen stopovers, according to Radio Pakistan. It will effectively link the new Islamabad Airport to Peshawar Morr, will be over 25 kilometres long, and feature nine bus stations, 11 underpasses, and 12 bridges.
    With regard to the terminal at the new airport, 95 percent of the construction is already over. It can house 4,500 passengers at a time and will sport fifteen, state-of-the-art docking stations, alongside an air traffic control based on international standards.

    KARACHI: Former PPP minister Sharjeel Memon on Saturday said he had reports of the government brokering a deal to sell Pakistan Steel Mills to Indian businessman Sajjan Jindal.
    The minister was addressing members of the press outside the court, after the hearing of a NAB reference case against Memon and 10 others for being involved in corruption amounting to PKR 5.76 billion.
    Memon's allegation follows the Indian businessman's unannounced visit to Pakistan and meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Murree on April 27.

    "Nawaz Sharif's approach is no less than that of a dictator," Memon said. "He hides behind democracy to channel his dictator-like approach."
    Hearing of corruption case in SHC
    The accountability court, on Saturday, heard the case of billions of rupees of corruption in the Sindh Information Department.
    The investigation officer presented the report pertaining to the property of on-the-run suspect Anita Baloch.
    Memon said that countless documents had been presented in the court but the list of those documents was not made available. He asked for the list to be submitted to the court.
    The court adjourned the hearing till May 13.

    Memon was taken into custody from Islamabad airport by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) personnel immediately after he landed in the country after two years. Memon arrived from Dubai, accompanied by the Sindh ministers Mukesh Chawla, Imdad Pitafi, Fayyaz Ali Butt and Nawab Taimur Talpur.
    NAB filed a reference case against Memon and 10 others in an accountability court of Karachi for alleged corruption of around PKR 5.76 billion. Others accused include Zulfiqar Ali Shallwani, Aneeta Baloch, Mansoor Ahmed Rajput, Mohammad Yousuf Kaboro, Inaam Akbar, Altaf Hussain Memon, Riyaz Manir, Fazal Mehmood, Mohammad Hanif, Asim, Masood Hashmi, Gulzar Ali, Suleman Mansoor Umer, Syed Naveed, and Sarang Latif Chandio.
    Memon was living in a self-imposed exile for more than two years in Dubai and London.

    Attempts at cyber wire fraud globally, via emails purporting to be from trusted business associates, surged in the last seven months of 2016, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a warning to businesses.
    Fraudsters sought to steal $5.3 billion through schemes known as business email compromise from October 2013 through December, the FBI said in a report released Thursday by its Internet Crime Complaint Center.
    The figure is up sharply from the FBI's previous report which said thieves attempted to steal $3.1 billion from October 2013 through May 2016, according to a survey of cases from law enforcement agencies around the world.
    The number of business email compromise cases, in which cyber criminals request wire transfers in emails that look like they are from senior corporate executives or business suppliers who regularly request payments, almost doubled from May to December of last year, rising to 40,203 from 22,143, the FBI said.
    The survey does not track how much money was actually lost to criminals.
    Robert Holmes, who studies business email compromise for security firm Proofpoint Inc (PFPT.O), estimated the incidents collated by the FBI represent just 20 percent of the total, and that total actual loss could be as much as double the figures reported by the FBI.
    The losses are growing as scammers become more sophisticated, delving deeper into corporate finance departments to find susceptible targets, he said.
    "This is not a volume play; it's a carefully researched play," he said.
    The United States is by far the biggest target market, though fraudsters have started to expand in other developed countries, including Australia, Britain, France and Germany, Holmes said.
    The FBI has said that about one in four U.S. victims responds by wiring money to fraudsters. In some of those cases, authorities have been able to identify the crimes in time to help victims recover the funds from banks before the criminals pulled them out of the system.
    The U.S. Department of Justice said in March that it had charged a Lithuanian man with orchestrating a fraudulent email scheme that had tricked agents and employees of two U.S.-based internet companies into wiring more than $100 million to overseas bank accounts.
    Fraudsters have also used spoofed emails to trick corporate workers into releasing sensitive data, including wage and tax reports, according to the advisory.

    SHEIKHUPURA: A fire that erupted in an oil depot on Lahore Road near Khanpur canal late last night has been doused after two hours, rescue sources said on Saturday.
    The oil depot, located near a private paper mill on Lahore Road, suddenly caught fire late Friday, resulting in its roof collapsing due to the intensity of the flames.
    No injury or fatality was reported in the incident as the depot was locked from the outside.

    Emergency teams reached the depository site as soon as they were alerted and commenced efforts to control the fire. Rescue officials explained that the blaze was caused by a short circuit.
    Thousands of litres of oil were burnt in the accident, the rescue teams revealed.

    Moreover, the 'station' was constructed illegally, SHO Akram Kamboh told Geo News. The security official added that Haji Amir, who hails from Lahore and allegedly owns the depot, fled the scene.
    Action will be taken against Amir, Kamboh added.

    Britain's Conservative Party made strong gains in local elections on Friday, suggesting Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit strategy is winning over voters who should hand her an easy victory in a parliamentary poll next month.
    Partial results from the local elections, which voters often use to punish the ruling party, showed May's Conservatives had instead gained more than 500 council seats.
    The main opposition Labour Party lost control of councils in strongholds in Wales but the biggest losses were suffered by the anti-EU UK Independence Party, which after two decades of campaigning to leave the European Union has struggled to find a new raison d'etre since Britons voted for Brexit last June.
    By calling an early national election for June 8, May has made the local votes a gauge of her leadership, and many Conservative candidates have campaigned in recent days using her campaign mantra of "strong and stable leadership".

    But turnout was low and the Conservatives were careful not to overplay their expected victory next month.
    May said she was taking nothing for granted. "Only a Conservative vote at the general election will strengthen my hand to get the best Brexit deal," she told supporters.
    Labour played down its losses. Finance spokesman John McDonnell described the results as tough, but "it hasn't been the wipe-out that some people predicted or the polls predicted".
    Scottish gains
    The Conservatives also did well in the vote for six metropolitan area mayors.
    Former retail sector boss Andy Street won a tight contest with Labour for the West Midlands area around Britain's second city Birmingham, although former Labour cabinet member Andy Burnham won Greater Manchester.
    British election candidate draws the short straw
    In Scotland, which since the late 1990s has largely shunned the governing party, early results showed the Conservatives gaining to the detriment of both Labour and, to a lesser extent, the Scottish National Party, which still looked likely to win the lion's share of votes overall.
    That would mirror a trend predicted in polls for next month's national election, showing the Conservatives becoming the party of choice for many of those who reject Scottish independence.
    Opinion polls give May a runaway lead in the national election of around 20 percentage points, which could hand her more than 100 more seats in parliament and bolster her hand in divorce negotiations with the EU.
    May has accused EU officials of seeking to sway the outcome of the election by issuing threats over Brexit, and warned voters that the other 27 member states were lining up against Britain to win a deal that "works for them".
