REUTERS/Umit Bektas  Turkey's parliament on Wednesday approved a draft bill that allows its troops to be deployed at a Turkish military base in Qatar, an apparent yet surprising move to support the Gulf Arab country as it faces diplomatic and trade isolation from some of the biggest Middle Eastern powers.

    Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Bahrain severed ties with Qatar and closed their airspace to commercial flights on Monday, alleging that it was financing militant groups. Qatar, however, denies the accusations.
    The bill, drafted before the rift, was passed with 240 votes in favour, largely with support from the ruling AK Party and nationalist opposition MHP.

    A preliminary investigation has confirmed that Qatar's state news agency was hacked and false statements attributed to the country's ruler were posted that helped spark a rift with other Gulf states, the Qatari foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
    Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and several other countries cut their ties with Doha on Monday in part over the comments briefly posted on the Qatar News Agency.
    The article quoted Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani as cautioning against confrontation with Iran as well as defending the Palestinian group Hamas and Hezbollah, a Lebanese movement allied to Tehran.
    "The Ministry said the investigation team confirmed that the piracy process had used high techniques and innovative methods by exploiting an electronic gap on the website of the Qatar News Agency," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
    While it did not say who it might believe carried out the hack, the ministry added its "team confirmed that the hacked file was installed last April, which was later exploited in the publication of the fabricated news on 24/5/2017, at 12:13 AM".
    The ministry said findings of the probe will be disclosed in a press conference "immediately after the team have completed the entire investigation".

    The Arab countries at odds with Qatar accuse it of supporting militant groups and advancing their arch-rival Iran's agenda in the region ? charges that Doha calls baseless.
    Qatar's foreign ministry thanked the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the British National Commission for Combating Crime (NCA) for cooperating in the investigation, without elaborating further.

    RAWALPINDI: Indian forces once again violated the ceasefire agreement late Wednesday after they resorted to unprovoked firing along the Line of Control (LoC), the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

    Indian troops resorted to unprovoked firing with heavy weapons in Nakial and Kayani sectors along the LoC, the ISPR said in a statement.
    They also fired mortars into Pakistani side of the control line.
    No loss of life or property has yet been reported in the wake of fresh ceasefire violation.
    Pakistan Army gave a matching response to the cross-border fire, leading to silencing of enemy guns.

    DOHA: The ongoing diplomatic rift between Qatar and its Gulf neighbours has resulted in huge disruption of flights to and from Qatar, forcing its official airline to fly around airspaces of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt.

    The Qatar Airways, following disruption of flights departing and arriving at the Qatari capital of Doha, has been making for longer routes, the Al Jazeera reported.
    The airspace controversy originates from a bigger diplomatic dispute between Qatar and several other nations.
    Image shows rerouted Qatari flight paths. ? Al Jazeera On Monday, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE and Egypt, among other countries, cut off all ties with Qatar, accusing Doha of supporting terrorism and meddling in the internal affairs of its fellow members in the GCC - something Qatar denies.

    In the meantime, several airlines have suspended flights to Doha, a major international transportation hub. Etihad, Emirates, Saudi Arabian Airlines, flydubai and Air Arabia have all cancelled their flights to the Hamad International Airport, one of the biggest airports in the Gulf region.
    Qatar Airways offices in Saudi Arabia have been closed and the Qatari national airline no longer flies to the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, according to the Doha-based, state-funded broadcaster.

    LONDON: British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party is on course to win Thursday's national election comfortably, an opinion poll suggested on Wednesday, the first of several last-minute surveys ahead of polling day.

    Polling firm ICM, which has tended to give the Conservatives bigger leads than most other polling firms, said May's lead increased by one percentage point to 12 points.
    Support for the Conservatives stood at 46 percent, up a point from ICM's previous poll published on Monday.
    Support for Labour was unchanged at 34 percent, ICM said in a preliminary poll set to be finalised later on Wednesday.
    That kind of lead would give May a majority of 96 seats in parliament, up sharply from the working majority of 17 that the Conservatives had in the previous parliament.
    Such a majority would vindicate May's decision to call an election less than a year after she became prime minister in the political turmoil that followed Britain's vote to leave the European Union.
    May called the election in April, saying she wanted to go into the Brexit negotiations with a position of strength.
    The ICM online poll of 1,532 adults was conducted between June 6 and 7, after a deadly attack in London on June 3.
    Five other opinion polls are expected to be published later on Wednesday, including one by Survation which estimated the Conservatives' lead stood at just one percentage point in its last two polls.
    Scepticism 
    There have been big differences too in estimates of how many seats the Conservatives are likely to win.
    Polling firm YouGov estimated earlier on Wednesday that the party would fall more than 20 seats short of a majority.
    Other models have predicted it will increase its majority.
    The wide range of estimates of support for the two main political parties has added to scepticism among many critics of polling who point to how the industry largely failed to accurately predict the outcome of the 2015 election and last year's referendum vote to exit the European Union.
    However, until recently the polls have largely shown a steady narrowing of the lead of May's Conservatives for much of the past three weeks following the publication of the parties' election policy pledges.
    But a poll published by Opinium on Monday, the first by a major firm that was conducted in its entirety after the attack in London, showed the Conservatives increasing their lead to seven points.

    Cars parked at a CNG filling station in Karachi. KARACHI: Compressed natural gas (CNG) stations in Sindh, including Karachi, will remain closed from Thursday to Friday, owing to gas load management.

    The stations will remain close from 8am on Thursday to 8am on Friday, according to a notification issued by Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC).
    CNG stations in Sindh remain closed for three days a week, owing to gas load management.
    The supply of gas also remains suspended to the industrial sector and captive power plants for one day a week.

    Pakistan has to win this match to keep alive hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals after a humiliating defeat by title-holders India in their tournament opener at Edgbaston on Sunday, produced a good bowling display against the Proteas.
    Team Pakistan appears to have watered-down the momentum it created courtesy fiery cameo of 31 off 23 by debutant Fakhar Zaman. His inning was curtailed by Morkel as he edged his outswinger.
    In the very same over, former skipper Azhar Ali (9)  played an unsuccessful uppercut to give an easy catch to Imran Tahir.
    Soon after the dismissal of the top order, Pakistan has played three consecutive maiden overs.   
    After a brief dull, Mohammad Hafeez and Babar Azam started rotating strike and playing stroke. South Africa has also lost its review on the lbw call of spinner Imran Tahir.  
    Hafeez was sent back to the pavilion after playing an unsuccessful pull short on a short pitch delivery by Morkel. 

    Early, in the match, Hasan Ali took three wickets as Pakistan completed a stunning turnaround in the field to restrict South Africa. 

    Just three days after conceding 319 for three against arch-rivals India in a crushing 124-run opening defeat by the title-holders at Edgbaston, Pakistan were a transformed side on their return to the Birmingham ground.

    Such was Pakistan´s command in the field, they inflicted the first golden duck in the 221-match one-day international career of South Africa captain AB de Villiers.
    Given totals of 300 are now generally regarded as ´par´ in ODI cricket, Pakistan were clearly on top at the innings break.
    However, the way they collapsed to 164 all out against India meant the Proteas were still in this game.
    South Africa came into Wednesday´s match as firm favourites.
    Not only are they top of the ODI rakings compared to Pakistan´s eighth, but they beat Sri Lanka by 96 runs in their tournament opener at the Oval last week.
    But none of that counted for very much after de Villiers won the toss in this day/night fixture.


    Early strikes by Imad Wasim and Mohammad Hafeez got rid of openers Hashim Amla (16), Quinton de Kock (33) and skipper AB de Villiers (golden duck), before Hasan Ali leveraged the pressure to get quick wickets and send South Africa reeling.

    The pacer had Faf du Plessis clean bowled for 26, followed shortly afterwards by JP Duminy caught in the slips. A brilliant delivery then sent Wayne Parnell's stumps flying, reducing the Proteas to 118-6.

    NEW DELHI: Indian police said Wednesday they have arrested one of three men accused of gang-raping a woman and tossing her baby from a moving auto rickshaw, killing the infant.

    Police released sketches of the three men -- including the rickshaw driver -- late Tuesday after registering a case of murder and gang-rape following the alleged attack last month in Gurgaon, on the outskirts of New Delhi.
    "We have made one arrest, yes. As far as the two others are concerned, a team is after them and we will arrest them very soon," Gurgaon´s commissioner of police Sandeep Khirwar told AFP.
    In her complaint to police, the woman said she got into the auto rickshaw with her nine-month-old daughter around midnight on May 29 to go to her parents´ home in Gurgaon in northern Haryana state.
    There were two men already in the rickshaw who started to harass her as soon as she got in and the three sexually assaulted her for several hours before dumping her by a roadside, according to her complaint.
    After being released from her ordeal the woman went back to look for her baby, who had died of head injuries, and took her to hospital on the subway, Khirwar said.
    India has a gruesome record on rape, with the capital New Delhi alone registering 2,199 rape cases in 2015 -- an average of six a day, according to most recent official figures.
    Nearly 40,000 rape cases are reported every year but the real number is thought to be much higher, with victims wary of how their complaints will be dealt with or the social stigma attached to *** crimes.
    India strengthened its laws on sexual violence after the fatal gang rape of a Delhi student in 2012 caused global outrage, but attacks on women are still widespread.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz?s leader Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said on Wednesday that the government is being blamed despite cooperation, adding that it is being alleged that the PML-N is making the JIT report controversial.

    The PML-N leaders were addressing a press conference in the capital, where Tariq Fazal said that the party is respectful toward everyone, adding that in return the PM House should be respected as well.
    He said that the picture of Hussain Nawaz is a matter of concern not only for the government but for the entire nation.
    Fazal said that despite the JIT?s proceedings being confidential, the leaking of the picture was quite unfortunate.

    Another PML-N senator Mushahidullah said that the government is being patient in the entire issue. He pointed to the presence of an ambulance inside the federal judicial academy at the first appearance of Hussain Nawaz before the JIT, saying that it was a hurtful thing.
    Earlier, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Khursheed Shah, remarked that the country?s institutions are being destroyed to save one family while taking a jibe at the ruling Sharif family.

    ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Raza Rabbani has approved the request of former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to take back his resignation, saying that the senator had admitted he tendered his resignation under duress and unusual circumstances.
    Rabbani said Hashmi had submitted his resignation in the office of the secretary Senate, but he didn?t appear on June 5 for confirmation of his resignation. He was asked to appear on June 7, however, Hashmi submitted an application to take back his resignation on June 6 and said he resigned under pressure.
    The Senate Chairman said he asked Hashmi if he wants to take back his resignation, to which the former PML-N leader said he wants to. His resignation has therefore been taken back, Rabbani said.

    Nehal Hashmi asked the Senate chairman on Tuesday not to consider his resignation from the upper house.
    Hashmi had submitted his resignation as a PML-N senator after instructions from the PML-N leadership following his recent controversial remarks against the judiciary.
    As a result, Hashmi ? who was also suspended from the party ? had submitted his resignation to Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani. On Monday, Hashmi failed to show up in Rabbani's office to personally verify his resignation, as asked by Rabbani.
    According to a written request submitted to the Senate chairman, Hashmi said he submitted his resignation amid intense pressure. Hashmi claimed that he wants to continue serving his duties as a Senator.
    The speech
    Nehal Hashmi?s party leadership was suspended after a video of him hurling threats at the members of judiciary surfaced.
    In a speech to workers in Karachi at a Youm-e-Takbeer event, which went viral on May 31, Hashmi had threatened the prime minister's unidentified 'enemies'.
    Before losing his position, Hashmi was the party's general secretary for Sindh.
    "The one you are investigating is the PM's son," roared Hashmi. "Those investigating us [must know] we will observe your day of judgment,? he stated further.
    The statements were taken to be directed at the judiciary and the Joint Investigation Team probing the prime minister's family in light of the Supreme Court's April 20 judgment in the Panama case.

    BIRMINGHAM: Quick strikes by Imad Wasim and Mohammad Hafeez sent South African top order reeling as Pakistan wrapped up Hashim Amla (16), Quinton de Kock (33) and skipper AB de Villiers for a golden duck in Champions Trophy match at Edgbaston on Wednesday.
    Imad Wasim had Amla trapped for lbw, and Hafeez had de Kock out for lbw soon afterwards. 
    Imad then struck again to dismiss de Villiers for a shock golden duck.
    Earlier South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first.

    South Africa captain AB de Villiers said, "We batted pretty well in the last game. A couple of games were played on this pitch. May break up a bit more. Had good intensity for 80% of the game, if we could get that to 100%, we'll be a good team."
    History hasn?t favoured Pakistan against the Proteas. The Green Shirts have lost both of their previous Champions Trophy matches against South Africa (2006 and 2013 editions). In the World Cup encounters, Pakistan have won one and lost three against the Proteas.

    Title-holders India won by the huge margin of 124 runs in a tournament featuring the world?s top eight one-day international sides.
    As well as repeatedly bowling too short and too wide, Wahab, a veteran of 79 ODIs, was unable to complete his allocation of overs after suffering an ankle injury while falling over in his delivery stride and was unable to bat in the match.

    ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the prime minister?s family?s global financial dealings. 
    The head of the JIT, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Additional Director-General Wajid Zia, had earlier submitted the probe team's interim progress report to the special implementation bench. 
    After perusing the report, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan observed that the progress so far is heading in the right direction. He added that no delay would be allowed in the 60-day deadline given to the probe team.
    The bench ? formed on May 2 to oversee the JIT?s work in light of the apex court?s April 20 judgment ? is headed by Justice Ejaz and comprises Justices Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Ijazul Ahsan.

    During the proceedings, the counsel of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's son Hussain Nawaz objected to the leaking of his client's picture during the JIT sessions. In response, the bench asked the JIT head to submit an explanation on Monday.
    After the hearing had concluded, Zia, in response to reporters' questions regarding problems faced by the JIT, said they will file a separate application with the court regarding these issues. 
    Meanwhile, reports said the prime minister's elder son, Hussain, has been summoned by the JIT for the fifth time on June 9 while his elder son, Hassan, on June 10 for the second time. 
    In its judgment in the Panama case, the court had given the JIT 60 days to complete its probe and ordered for submission of fortnightly progress reports. The bench had finalised the JIT members on May 6.

    A news report published in The News revealed that a person claiming to be the Supreme Court registrar had surreptitiously contacted the Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and asked for specific persons to be included in the list of potential JIT members. The prime minister?s son, Hussain, had raised questions of bias against one of the SECP officials who made it to the probe team. However, those objections were not entertained by the court.
    Moreover, a picture of Hussain during his first visit to the JIT on May 28 was leaked to the media recently, raising questions on the credibility of the JIT?s work. In the picture, Hussain can be seen inside a room with no other pieces of furniture except for the chair he is sitting on and a table beside it. Opposition parties claimed the government itself leaked the picture to gain sympathy, however the Interior Ministry denied those claims.

    The most recent controversy surrounding the JIT stemmed from former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz?s recent threats against the ?those investigating the prime minister?s family?. 
    Senator Nehal Hashmi, who was the PML-N?s Sindh general secretary when he made the comments a week ago, is facing contempt charges in the Supreme Court for ?threatening the families of judges? after the court took a suo motu notice of his remarks.

    Progress
    Since May 22, the JIT has summoned Hussain Nawaz four times and the premier?s younger son, Hassan, only once.
    Moreover, sources said, the SECP has submitted all the pertinent record related to the Sharif family?s business, including documents of the Hudaibiya Paper Mills case. The affidavit of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar with regards to the case ? recorded in front of a sessions judge during the tenure of Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf ? has also been submitted with the JIT. However, that statement, said to be damaging for the Sharif family, was later retracted by Dar.
    The JIT has also received a response from Qatari prince Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jaber Al-Thani after writing to him twice to record his statement. The Sharif family had earlier submitted a letter by the Qatari prince in the Supreme Court aiding the premier?s defence of his money trail. In his reply to the JIT?s summons, the prince has said he cannot travel to Pakistan but is willing to record his statement with the JIT via other means.
    The JIT also summoned National Bank President Saeed Ahmad and questioned him for around 12 hours.
    Qatari prince?s letter
    Former Senator Saifur Rehman ? a close aide of the prime minister ? has said that as the Qatari prince has verified the contents of his letter to the JIT, there is no need for him to come to Pakistan.
    Speaking on Geo News? show told Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath on Tuesday night, Rehman said the royal family member has no issues recording his statement with the JIT if they visit Doha.

    US intelligence officials believe Russian hackers planted a false news story that led Saudi Arabia and several allies to sever relations with Qatar, prompting a diplomatic crisis, CNN reported Tuesday.
    FBI experts visited Qatar in late May to analyse an alleged cyber breach that saw the hackers place the fake story with Qatar´s state news agency, the US broadcaster said.
    Saudi Arabia then cited the false item as part of its reason for instituting a diplomatic and economic blockade against Qatar, the report said.
    Qatar´s government said the May 23 news report attributed false remarks to the emirate´s ruler that appeared friendly to Iran and Israel, and questioned whether US President Donald Trump would last in office, according to CNN.
    Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani told the broadcaster that the FBI has confirmed the hack and the planting of fake news.
    "Whatever has been thrown as an accusation is all based on misinformation and we think that the entire crisis is being based on misinformation," he told CNN.
    "It was started based on fabricated news, being wedged and being inserted in our national news agency, which was hacked and proved by the FBI," he added.
    If accurate, the allegations would indicate Russian efforts to undermine US foreign policy, building on US intelligence concerns that Russian hackers attempted to influence last year´s presidential election, won by Trump. The Kremlin denies meddling.
    Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain announced Monday they were severing diplomatic relations and closing air, sea and land links with Qatar.
    They accused the tiny Gulf state of harbouring extremist groups and suggested Qatari support for the agenda of Saudi Arabia´s regional archrival Iran. Qatar has strenuously denied the allegations.
    Although Qatar hosts the largest American military airbase in the Middle East, Trump threw his weight behind the Saudi-led effort to isolate the emirate in a surprise move on Tuesday.
    He suggested Qatar was funding extremism.
    "So good to see the Saudi Arabia visit with the King and 50 countries already paying off," he tweeted in reference to his trip to Riyadh last month.
    "They said they would take a hard line on funding... extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar. Perhaps this will be the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!"
    The CNN report quoted the Qatari government communications office as saying it was working with the FBI and Britain´s National Crime Agency on an ongoing hacking investigation.

    Moscow on Wednesday dismissed allegations that Russian hackers helped spark the diplomatic crisis around Qatar.
    "We´re getting tired of reacting to unsubstantiated banalities," Andrei Krutskikh, a Kremlin advisor on cybersecurity, told the Interfax news agency.
    "Whatever happens it is hackers. It´s a stale claim and as ever there is zero evidence, and conclusions are drawn before the incident is even investigated," he said.
    Russian hackers are currently at the centre of international attention after allegations the Kremlin launched cyberattacks aimed at swaying the US presidential vote last year.
    Moscow has repeatedly denied it was behind hacking attacks against the US and a raft of other alleged cyber breaches abroad.

    LAHORE: Law Minister Punjab Rana Sanaullah said on Wednesday that the Joint Investigation Team?s report getting marred by controversy can lead to chaos in the country.

    The provincial minister was speaking to media in Lahore.
    ?If a campaign starts against the JIT report then I will be at the forefront,? said Sanaullah.
    The minister said that the Sharif family reserves the right to boycott the JIT.

    The United Arab Emirates warned on Wednesday that anyone showing sympathy with Qatar over sanctions imposed by its Gulf neighbours could face up to 15 years in prison.
    The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Bahrain cut diplomatic relations with Qatar on Monday and gave its citizens 14 days to leave, accusing Doha of supporting extremism. Qatar has denied the charges.

    "The UAE attorney general warns that any participation in conversation or social media or any other means that demonstrates sympathy to Qatar or protests the position of the UAE and other states against the Qatari government may face a prison sentence of three to 15 years and a fine of no less than 500,000 dirhams ($136,125, 120,715 euros)," said a statement carried by the Gulf News and Al-Bayan newspapers.
    The four governments also closed their airspaces to all Qatari flights and banned Qatar-based news giant Al Jazeera. Saudi Arabia has closed Qatar´s only land border.
    Like much of the Gulf, the UAE has harsh cybercrime and defamation laws which have drawn condemnation from international human rights groups.
    Article 29 of the cybercrime law criminalises any online publication of information "with intent to make sarcasm or damage the reputation, prestige or stature of the state or... any of its symbols".
