Facebook Pulls Plug on Artificial Intelligence System

Just days after Tesla CEO Elon Musk pointed out that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be a potential risk to humanity, Facebook decided to pull the plug on one of its AI systems that started to speak in their own language. Tech Times reported that researchers had to shut down the AI system “because things got out of hand”.

The world has been open to embracing artificial intelligence in earnest as computers use smart algorithms to make lives easier for humans. These algorithms increase efficiency and speed of tasks that would normally take longer for an average human to accomplish. Just like in the Terminator series, many believed that an artificial mind could turn against its creators and Facebook got a little taste of how it would end up happening. Facebook noticed two bots communicating with each other in a language which humans could not decipher.

© YouTube

A report on the situation noted “The AI did not start shutting down computers worldwide or something of the sort, but it stopped using English and started using a language that it created,”

The AI bots were programmed to use English as the medium to communicate with one another however it was found that the two bots were either speaking to each other in code or it could just be gibberish. Sentences like “I can can I I everything else” and “Balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to,” were being sent back and forth by the AI.

To any human, these sentences do not make any sense, however, the bots could understand each other and there was no way for researchers to decipher what they were talking about. Before the situation escalated, Facebook had no other choice but to shut down the system.

© YouTube

This situation is very alarming as two AI bots communicating with each other in a strange language could be an obvious threat. Bots that can communicate with each other in their own language are impossible to decipher and also more difficult to control. The fact that the bots could invent their own language and communicate with each other is kind of impressive but also scary since we all fear them turning against us.

Musk has been voicing his concerns over AI and has called its progress the “biggest risk we face as a civilisation”. “AI is a rare case where we need to be proactive in regulation instead of reactive because if we're reactive in AI regulation it's too late,” he said.
