Apple Gives Explanation For Failed Face ID Demonstration

Remember the Face ID fail during the Apple keynote? It turns out there was a reason behind the failure and we kind of understand why it happened. Many people took to Twitter to make fun of the scenario with memes and jokes but what exactly happened is in contrary to what people quickly assumed.Β

Apple explained that the demo iPhone X was being handled by several people before the setup at the demo table for Craig Federighi. Face ID scans your face to authenticate before you can unlock the phone. The demo iPhone X required the passcode and people thought the new facial recognition technology failed to work.Β

Here's what an Apple rep said about the fiasco:

People were handling the device for stage demo ahead of time,” says a rep, β€œand didn't realize Face ID was trying to authenticate their face. After failing a number of times, because they weren't Craig, the iPhone did what it was designed to do, which was to require his passcode.” In other words, β€œFace ID worked as it was designed to.”

Many assumed that the iPhone X's demo was a failure as Federighi tried to authenticate his face and it did not work. However, he quickly changed to the second demo device and as we all saw it worked like charm.

You can make as much fun as you want but the first demo model was doing exactly what it was designed to. Just like Touch ID, Face ID was unable to authenticate via face recognition and prompted for a passcode instead.Β

Now you may want to dismiss the new unlocking feature as a gimmick or as a failure, but we all know Apple will only introduce a technology when it is in perfect working condition and the demo proved exactly that.Β
