There's Just One 100% Solar-Powered City In India With More Than 50,000 People Living There

Being the first one in the whole country is an achievement in itself, and right now Diu is experiencing that, and getting the much-deserved attention and appreciation for it. Setting an incredible example for the county and soon other cities should follow suit, because it's honestly time.

Diu has become the first city in India to run totally on solar energy, the cleanest of all energies. And, it sounds unbelievable, but this much progress was made in just 3 years.

Even though Diu spans over just 40 square km, the city has managed to install solar panels on 50 acres of land, and with a population of just over 50,000, that would be more than enough energy for the residents.

And what inspired this change? The fact that the Union Territory was completely dependent on the Gujarat government for water and electricity.

Well, this was the best decision because since the local company started producing energy, electric losses have decreased significantly. Moreover, since the electricity requirements peak go up to 7 megawatts only, even during the peak hours, there is a lot of surplus.

And, an even better thing about going green – the reduced power bill. Reportedly, the monthly bills of residents have gone down by 12%.

After the success of solar energy, Diu is also looking into wind energy and are currently in the process of setting up windmills.

Hemant Kumar, district collector, Diu, says: “Early this year, we were picked as part of India's Smart City mission. Renewable energy is one of the many steps we are taking to get there.”

When will the whole country follow Diu's example? It's high time.
