Modi Government's Claims Of Electrifying 'Every' Village In India Busted In Four Simple Tweets

After 70 years of independence, with electricity reaching Leisang village in Manipur, India finally became fully electrified. It was on 15th August 2015 that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised electrification of all remaining villages within 1000 days. The task took 988 days to be completed but the government is facing flak for claiming all the credit for an electrified India.

In a series of tweets on Sunday, Ravi Nair busted the myth that Modi government was solely responsible for providing electricity all across the country.

In 1947, about 1500 villages were electrified in India. In the next 44 years - by 1991 - this number reached 481,124 villages. That means, 10,934 villages were electrified every year in an average.

From 2014-18, this average is 4346 villages per year!!

The tweets showed government data which proved that the average of villages electrified under the Narendra Modi led initiative was less than the overall average of previous six decades.

Even the numbers from the UPA regime fetched from the government data were twice as better than the current government. From 2005-06 to 2013-14 a total of 1,07,650 villages were electrified under the Rajiv Gandhi Vidyutikaran Yojna which turns out to an average of 11,961 villages a year. The average under the current government is just 4,346 villages per year in the period 2014-18. Only 18,000 villages were left to be electified when the Modi government came to power in 2014.Β

While it's true that the last mile is often the toughest, the government's tall claims of being the sole proprietor of electrification in India without giving due credit to the previous administrations is deplorable, to say the least.
