    Two US B-1B bombers were deployed over the Korean peninsula on Monday during a joint drill with South Korea's air force, South Korea's ministry said.
    South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman Moon Sang-gyun told a briefing that the deployment of US bombers was part of efforts to deter provocation by North Korea and respond to threats posed by the North's nuclear and missile programmes.
    Moon did not give any further details.

    China's box office sales grew at their fastest pace in over a year in April, driven by the U.S. action movie "The Fate of the Furious", the eighth instalment of the high-octane fast car franchise.
    Monthly ticket sales jumped nearly 57 percent from the same period a year ago to 4.9 billion yuan ($707.5 million), data from box office tracker EntGroup showed, the largest monthly growth since February last year.
    China's box office, a magnet for Hollywood producers, saw growth stall last year amid a crackdown on subsidies and a weak slate of movies. Ticket sales grew under 4 percent in 2016, down sharply from around 50-percent growth the year before.
    After a stronger start this year, China ticket sales slid again in February and March.
    The sharp April rise came on the back of the latest outing from Universal's hugely-popular Fast and Furious franchise. The film, released in mid-April in China, has so far raked in $362.7 million in the China market, EntGroup data showed.
    Despite a slowdown in box office sales in the market, US studios are increasingly looking to China to boost global revenues, though they face issues from a local quota system for imported films to questions over censorship.
    Hollywood is lobbying to increase the official quota level of 34 imported films a year and to raise the share of sales that international partners receive, as a revenue-sharing deal struck in 2012 comes up for review this year.
    "The Fate of the Furious", which stars Vin Diesel and Jason Statham, is the second-highest grossing movie of 2017 so far behind "Beauty and the Beast", with global ticket sales of $1.06 billion, according to Box Office Mojo.

    KARACHI: A suspect was killed in an alleged encounter with police, while two people were injured in two separate shootings in Karachi late Monday, Geo News has learnt.
    Police claimed that they signalled a man to stop in Keamari's Gulshan e Sikandar area, but he opened fire on them. In retaliation, the suspect was killed.
    The deceased could not be immediately identified.
    A firing incident took place in Liaquatabad, which left a man injured. Police said the incident was an outcome of domestic dispute.
    Another man was wounded in a shooting near Lasi Goth, officials said.
    On the other hand, police conducted a raid in Pakistan Bazar area and apprehended two suspected drug peddlers. Officials claimed to have seized over 1kg drugs and weapons from the suspects.
    In another raid in North Nazimabad, the law enforcers rounded up a suspect involved in street crimes.

    LAHORE: Pakistan People's Party has announced a formal campaign in Punjab against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after May 4.
    PPP leaders on Monday held corner meetings in different constituencies of the provincial capital.
    Addressing one such meeting, Senator Aitzaz Ahsan said the government got scared with a mere announcement of protest at 'Minar e Pakistan', adding, "What would happen when we actually held rallies?"
    He alleged that the media cell headed by PM's daughter, Maryam Nawaz snoops on high-level meetings at the PM House.
    PPP central Punjab leader Qamar Zaman Kaira said now no Gullu Butt would be of any help to Nawaz Sharif. "When they used to bemoan in prisons, we supported them. We also know what we are to do now," he added.
    PPP central information secretary Chaudhry Manzoor said that those who ran after submitting an apology couldn't be the nation's hero.
    He claimed that it was Nawaz government which was responsible for loadshedding, not the PPP.

    President Donald Trump is reviewing a possible breakup of large US banks, according to a published interview Monday.
    Trump told Bloomberg News that he was considering a "21st century" version of the 1933 Glass-Steagall law that separated consumer lending and investment banking and was repealed in 1999 by President Bill Clinton.
    "I'm looking at that right now," Trump said in an Oval Office interview with Bloomberg. "There's some people that want to go back to the old system, right? So we're going to look at that."
    Trump's comments are his first on the subject and follow other statements from administration officials such as National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin expressing broad support for the idea.
    Several liberal Democrats, including Senator Bernie Sanders, have also supported a breakup of the biggest banks.
    However, the Trump administration has not released details about what an eventual breakup plan might look like.
    Shares of large banks gave up some of their gains following the Bloomberg report, but stayed in positive territory.

    People who smoke cigarettes may boost their risk of clogged heart arteries by weakening a gene that is otherwise protective of these important blood vessels, US researchers said Monday.
    The findings point to a genetic explanation for how smoking can lead to the plaque buildup that stiffens arteries and causes heart disease, said the report in the journal Circulation.
    "This has been one of the first big steps towards solving the complex puzzle of gene-environment interactions that lead to coronary heart disease," said co-author Danish Saleheen, assistant professor of biostatistics and epidemiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
    Researchers pooled genetic data on more than 140,000 people from more than two dozen earlier studies, with a particular focus on regions of the genome that have been previously associated with a higher risk of plaque buildup in the heart's arteries.
    "A change in a single DNA 'letter' on chromosome 15, near the gene that expresses an enzyme (ADAMTS7) produced in blood vessels, was associated with a 12 percent reduction in heart risk in nonsmokers," said the report.
    "However, smokers with this same variation had only a five percent lower risk of coronary heart disease -- reducing by over half the protective effect of this genetic variation."
    Follow-up lab studies showed that in cells that line arteries of the human heart, the production of the enzyme ADAMTS7 dropped significantly when the cells contained this single-letter DNA variant.
    Inhibiting an enzyme

    Another experiment showed when coronary artery-lining cells were exposed to the liquid extract of cigarette smoke, the cells' production of ADAMTS7 more than doubled.
    If researchers can find other ways to inhibit this enzyme, they might be able to help smokers and others at heightened risk of coronary heart disease, said co-author Muredach Reilly, director of the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research at Columbia University Medical Center.
    Cigarette smoking is known to cause about one in five cases of coronary heart disease, and is linked to approximately 1.6 million deaths worldwide each year.
    "Through these large-scale genetic studies, we're beginning to understand the genetic variations that drive risk in response to certain environmental exposures or lifestyle behaviors," said Reilly.
    "Not everyone reacts the same to the same exposures or behaviors. For example, some people who don't exercise develop diabetes while others do not," he added.
    "So, instead of saying there are rules for everybody, we can specify which interventions will be especially beneficial for specific populations or individuals and focus our health resources more efficiently."

    WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump announced on Monday he has signed an executive order creating a new technology council to "transfer and modernise" the US government's information technology systems.
    A White House official confirmed Monday that about 20 technology chief executives will attend meetings at the White House in early June to talk about improving government information technology.
    "Americans deserve better digital services from their Government. To effectuate this policy, the federal government must transform and modernize its information technology and how it uses and delivers digital services," Trump's executive order dated April 28 said.
    Trump has held a number of meetings with top tech chief executives since becoming president, including Apple Inc, Facebook Inc, Alphabet Inc, IBM Corp, Microsoft Inc, and Tesla Inc.
    In March, Trump signed a separate order to overhaul the federal government. Trump tapped Jared Kushner in March to lead a White House Office of American Innovation to leverage business ideas and potentially privatize some government functions as the White House pushes to shrink government, cut federal employees and eliminate regulations.
    Officially called the American Technology Council, Chris Liddell will be its director. He is the White House director of strategic initiatives, and former Microsoft and General Motors co chief financial officer.
    A 2016 US Government Accountability Office report publicly estimated the US government spends more than $80 billion in IT annually, but said spending has fallen by $7.3 billion since 2010. In 2015, there were at least 7,000 separate IT investments by the US government, the report said.
    The $80 billion figure does not include Defense Department classified IT systems; and 58 independent executive branch agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency, the report said.
    The GAO report said US government IT investments "are becoming increasingly obsolete: many use outdated software languages and hardware parts that are unsupported."
    The report found some agencies are using systems that have components that are at least 50 years old. "The Department of Defense uses 8-inch floppy disks in a legacy system that coordinates the operational functions of the nation’s nuclear forces," the report said.
    The report said the Defense Department plans to
    update the system by the end of September.
    The Treasury Department's business master file of tax data pertaining to individual business income taxpayers dates back to the 1950s and using an antiquated computer language "and operates on an IBM mainframe."
    The council is chaired by Trump and includes the defense secretary, homeland security secretary, budget director and director of national intelligence.

    ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: The government has appointed Riaz Riazuddin as acting governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, according to a notification issued on Sunday.
    The notification said that Riaz Riazuddin has been appointed acting governor of the central bank for a period of three months or until the appointment of the new governor.
    He has until now been serving as deputy governor of the SBP.
    The key post fell vacant after former governor, Ashraf Mehmood Wathra, completed his term on April 29.
    He was appointed governor for three years in 2014.

    West Indies hit back with three wickets in the final hour after a 155-run opening stand as Pakistan reached stumps at 172 for three in reply to the home side’s first innings total of 312 on the second day of the second Test at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Monday.
    Azhar Ali held firm at one end for an unbeaten 81 in a five-hour vigil after opening partner Ahmed Shehzad rode outrageous moments of luck to contribute 70 in the first-wicket partnership. He resumes on the third morning alongside captain Misbah ul Haq.
    Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo eventually broke through for the home side by having Shehzad caught at slip before adding the prized scalp of Younis Khan for a “duck” when the veteran pulled a long-hop to Shannon Gabriel at midwicket.
    In between those dismissals, Gabriel removed Babar Azam, also without scoring, to a catch off his own bowling. It was no more than the burly fast bowler deserved although his earlier misfortune was compounded by chronic no-ball problems.
    Dropped at mid-on by Vishaul Singh just as Pakistan started their reply in the morning session, Shehzad was then ruled LBW off Gabriel when on 21 in the post-lunch period only for the decision to be overturned after television replays determined the delivery to be a no-ball.
    Lightning then struck twice for the same man after he was stranded down the pitch and stumped to the bowling of off-spinner Roston Chase on 32, the batsman almost reaching the pavilion when he was summoned by the umpires to return to the crease as the replays again showed the bowler to have transgressed the front crease.
    "There was variable bounce out there so it was really difficult to get going, but I have to admit that I had more than my fair share of luck," said Shehzad.
    "I can't give enough credit to Azhar for the way he has played and if he can continue on the third day and help give us a lead, then we have a good chance to win this match and the series."
    Lucky moments

    Those lucky moments consolidated what had been Pakistan’s day until the final hour after they wrapped up the West Indies first innings within an hour of the start.
    Mohammad Abbas led the visiting bowlers’ effort with two more wickets to finish with four for 56, the best figures by a Pakistan fast bowler in Test innings at the venue, bettering Wasim Akram’s four for 73 in 1988, as the home team lost their last four wickets for the addition of 26 more runs.

    West Indies’ hopes of pushing towards a total closer to the 400-run mark were dashed within the first nine deliveries of the morning as their first-day heroes, Chase and Jason Holder, were dismissed without any addition to the overnight total of 286 for six.
    Holder was the first to go, his late decision to pull away from an Abbas delivery resulting in an inside-edge to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed. Mohammad Amir then removed Chase, whose 131 was the first Test century by a Barbadian on home soil for 18 years. Drawn forward by a full-length delivery, his indeterminate prod resulted in a thick outside edge for Younis Khan to snare his third catch of the innings at second slip.
    Bishoo played in his usual pugnacious manner but Abbas’ request of his captain for another over reaped immediate rewards when Bishoo lifted an on-drive to Yasir Shah at mid-on. Shah then wrapped up the innings when Alzarri Joseph was bowled missing a heave at a full-toss in the leg-spinner’s first over of the morning.

    One person died and three others sustained potentially serious wounds in a stabbing attack at the University of Texas in Austin on Monday, where one person has been taken into custody, emergency and school officials said.
    No motive was immediately given for the attack, which occurred near a gym on the campus, in the heart of the Texas capital.
    "Subject is in custody and there is no ongoing threat to the campus community," university police said on their Twitter feed.
    The person killed was found dead at the scene, Austin-Travis County EMS Captain Rick Rutledge said in a telephone interview. At least two of the people taken to hospitals were adult males, the service said on its Twitter feed.
    Of the three survivors, two were stabbed and one was assaulted by the suspect, university police said.
    The university advised students to avoid the area where the stabbings took place.

    RAWALPINDI: At least three terrorists were killed after Pakistan Army troops repulsed a cross-border attack in South Waziristan Agency late Monday, according to the Inter Services Public Relations.
    Terrorists attacked military outposts in South Waziristan Agency from across the border late on Monday night, the ISPR said in a statement.
    The troops stationed at the border posts valiantly repulsed terrorist attack, which left three infiltrators dead.
    Scores of militants were also wounded in intense exchange of fire, it read.

    Emre Can scored a sensational overhead bicycle kick as Liverpool galvanised their grip on third place in the Premier League by winning 1-0 at Watford on Monday.
    Having seen top-four rivals Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal all drop points on Sunday, Liverpool capitalised thanks to Can's jaw-dropping effort in first-half injury time.
    The Germany midfielder's fifth goal of the season took Liverpool three points above fourth-place City, albeit having played a game more, inching Jurgen Klopp's side closer to Champions League qualification.
    "The goal was spectacular, of course," Liverpool manager Klopp told Sky Sports.
    "It was clear we have to work and that is what we did. It won't be easy for anyone to win here.
    "We needed a bit of luck, but we worked hard for it."
    It was Liverpool's third successive away win and got them back on track after a 2-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace on their previous outing had ended a seven-game unbeaten streak.
    The only disappointment for the men in red at Vicarage Road was the early departure of playmaker Philippe Coutinho with what Klopp confirmed was a dead leg.
    Walter Mazzarri's Watford remain 13th, having been denied a last-gasp equaliser when centre-back Sebastian Prodl's crisp effort thudded against the crossbar.
    "We didn't deserve to lose," said Mazzarri.
    "Their wonder goal means nothing is going on our side because the first real chance they had, and it wasn't really a chance, they took it."
    M'Baye Niang registered an early shot on target for the hosts, but a sleepy start to the game was remarkable more for injuries than penalty-box action.
    Coutinho came off second-best in an early collision with recalled Watford defender Adrian Mariappa.

    The Brazil international soldiered on until the 13th minute before giving way for Adam Lallana, who came on to make his first appearance after a month out with a groin injury.
    Six minutes later Watford were forced into a change of their own when defender Miguel Britos signalled that he was unable to continue, which brought Christian Kabasele into the fray.
    Liverpool went close with a couple of efforts from distance, Can extending Heurelho Gomes from range and Lallana rattling the bar with a stunning 20-yard volley after Gomes had punched clear.
    The visitors were toiling, their lack of ideas exposed when Lucas Leiva received a 44th-minute booking for a totally unconvincing attempt to win a penalty off Tom Cleverley.
    But two minutes into stoppage time Liverpool went ahead with a Goal of the Season contender.
    Lucas flighted a pass into the box and with Nordin Amrabat standing off, Can launched himself into a magnificent scissors kick from 15 yards out that catapulted the ball into the top-left corner.
    "That is the best goal I've ever scored," Can said.
    Buoyed by the German's moment of brilliance, Liverpool set about putting the game to bed in the second half.
    Gomes had to box away a James Milner free-kick and twice saved from Divock Origi, palming away a curling effort and then standing up well to thwart the Belgian striker in a one-on-one.
    It took Watford until the 68th minute to register another shot on target.
    Etienne Capoue's rising effort from distance was tipped over by Simon Mignolet, only for the officials to award a goal-kick, sparking a furious Watford reaction that saw Capoue booked for dissent.
    The introduction of 21-year-old Nigerian Isaac Success gave Watford some attacking fizz and Daryl Janmaat almost caught Mignolet out with a curling effort from wide on the left.
    Liverpool might have won more comfortably had Gomes not saved from Joel Matip and substitute Daniel Sturridge, but they were indebted to the woodwork for foiling Prodl at the death.

    WASHINGTON: US factory activity slowed in April while consumer spending was unchanged in March and a key inflation measure recorded its first monthly drop since 2001, but economists still expect an interest rate increase in June as the labor market tightens.
    The weak reports on Monday came ahead of the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting on Tuesday. Economists said policymakers were likely to view the raft of soft data as temporary. The US central bank is not expected to raise interest rates at the end of the meeting on Wednesday.
    "We don't expect that will prevent the Fed from hiking interest rates again at the June meeting, at least not as long as employment growth rebounds in April and May," said Paul Ashworth, chief US economist at Capital Economics in Toronto.
    The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said its index of national factory activity dropped to a four-month low of 54.8 in April from a reading of 57.2 in March. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion in manufacturing, which accounts for about 12 percent of the US economy.
    The ISM index had risen since last November, scaling a 2-1/2-year high in February, amid optimism over President Donald Trump's pro-business policy proposals.
    It has declined in the last two months and some economists say the retreat probably reflects caution among business as they await implementation of the proposals. The Trump administration last week proposed a tax plan that includes cutting the corporate income tax rate to 15 percent from 35 percent, but offered no details.
    "The sugar high is wearing off," said Tim Quinlan, a senior economist at Wells Fargo Economics in Charlotte, North Carolina.
    The manufacturing recovery is being supported by rising oil prices, which saw spending on mining exploration, wells and shafts surging at a record 449 percent rate in the first quarter.
    Last month, nearly every sub-index of the ISM index fell. A measure of new orders received at factories tumbled to a five- month low. A gauge of factory employment dropped to its lowest level since October, which could pose a risk to an expected rebound in job growth in April.
    US stocks were little changed as gains in technology stocks, led by Apple (AAPL.O), countered the weak reports. Prices for US Treasuries fell, while the dollar held mostly steady against a basket of currencies.
    INFLATION DIP SEEN TEMPORARY
    The Fed lifted its overnight interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point in March, in a nod to a strong labor market that is near full employment, and has forecast two more hikes this year.
    The consumer spending data was included in last Friday's first-quarter gross domestic product report, which showed the economy growing at a 0.7 percent rate - the weakest performance in three years.
    In March, the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index excluding food and energy slipped 0.1 percent, the first and largest drop since September 2001, after increasing 0.2 percent in February. The drop reflected declines in the prices of automobiles and mobile phone services.
    view much of the weakness in March as driven by one-off factors and expect inflation to firm on a monthly basis in the very near term," said Rod Martin, an economist at Barclays in New York. "We continue to see services price pressures as firming further in the coming quarters."
    With price pressures subsiding, inflation-adjusted consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of US economic activity, increased 0.3 percent in March, ending two straight months of decline. That bodes well for consumer spending in the second quarter.
    Consumption will likely be supported by rising wages. Private sector wages recorded their biggest increase in 10 years in the first quarter.
    In March, income gained 0.2 percent after rising 0.3 percent in February. Income at the disposal of households after accounting for inflation increased 0.5 percent, the biggest gain since December 2015. Savings increased to a one-year high of $849.1 billion from $819.0 billion in February.

    ISLAMABAD: Federal Defence Minister and Minister of Water and Power, Khawaja Asif spurned India’s attempt to malign Pakistan on Monday.
    In a social media post, he wrote, “Indian allegations of Pakistani incursion on LOC are baseless. It is a deplorable attempt to ignite tensions for internal political motives.”
    He further said that Indian allegations attempt to demonise Pakistan Army and take attention away from Indian atrocities in Kashmir. “These baseless allegations are aimed at vitiating the environment, deflecting attention from troubles in Kashmir & demonising Pakistan Army,” he wrote.
    He said that he expects Indian government to exercise caution and not let the situation go out of control. “We remain fully committed to peace on LOC. We expect prudence will b exercised on Indian side to avoid situation spiralling out of control,” he shared.
    He added, "Pakistan Army upholds highest standards of professional conduct..violation of LOC and question of mutilation of bodies does not arise at all."
    Earlier, Pakistan Army had also rejected the accusations of the Indian Army.

    “Pakistan Army did not commit any ceasefire violation on line of control or a BAT action in Buttal sector (Indian Krishna Ghatti Sector) as alleged by India. Indian blame of mutilating Indian soldiers' bodies are also false”, an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said.
    “Pakistan Army is a highly professional force and shall never disrespect a soldier even Indian”, the statement further said.
    Indian Army had alleged that two members of an Indian army patrol were killed on LoC and then their bodies were mutilated.

    KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan leader Farooq Sattar on Monday said that the party’s vote bank is not divided, adding that if a change in Pakistan occurred it will be through the MQM-P’s platform.
    The MQM-P chief was addressing a workers’ convention in Punjab. He said that to make the local bodies system powerful, the party would approach the Supreme Court or high court.
    Sattar said that he welcomed Imran Khan’s statement, which supported MQM-P’s stance over powers of the local government’s representatives.
    He said that the party’s campaign is to empower people and local bodies’ institutions, and if they are weak then democracy in the country does not have a future.
    He said that his party clinched 17 seats from Karachi in the National Assembly, and this time would get 18 seats.
    He also gave a friendly advice to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that he should avoid conflict and take measures that dispel the impression that the institutions are in disagreement.

    A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Florida on Monday, carrying the company's first satellite for the US military, and breaking a 10-year monopoly held by a partnership of Lockheed Martin and Boeing.
    The 23-story tall rocket took off from its seaside launch pad at Kennedy Space Center at 7:15 am EDT (1115 GMT.)
    It will put into orbit a classified satellite for the US National Reconnaissance Office, an agency within the Defense Department that operates the nation's spy satellites.
    Nine minutes after takeoff, the rocket's main section touched down on a landing pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, just south of NASA's spaceport.
    Last month, Space Exploration Technologies Corp flew its first recovered booster on a second mission, a key step in company founder Elon Musk's quest to cut launch costs.
    The National Reconnaissance Office bought SpaceX's launch services via a contract with Ball Aerospace, a Colorado-based satellite and instrument builder. The terms of the contract were not disclosed.
    Musk battled for years to break the monopoly on the military's launch business held by United Launch Alliance, a partnership of Lockheed Martin and Boeing.
    SpaceX sued the US Air Force in 2014 over its exclusive multibillion-dollar contract with United Launch Alliance. The company later dropped the suit after the military agreed to open more launch contacts to competitive bidding

    Speaking at India Today's Mind Rocks Guwahati 2017, the actress got candid about working with Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan.
    About Salman Khan, she remarked, "He is a strong man. He will always set an example for people who look up to him. It is difficult to guess what he thinks. His strength and silence are admirable qualities. He is an incredible person."
    She is all prepared to reunite with the star in the sequel of Ek Tha Tiger; Tiger Zinda Hai. The movie is likely to release during Christmas.
    One the other hand, "Shah Rukh Khan is a very knowledgeable person. He speaks like a poet and has got an energy which never stops,” remarked the actress, who has starred opposite him in Jab Tak Hai Jaan.
    Speaking about Aamir, she said that “he has a different approach to working. His approach is very meticulous. He puts in a lot of physical work and mental preparation. No one puts that kind of dedication to work." The two have starred in Dhoom 3.

    LONDON: Former President and chief of All Pakistan Muslim League Gen (rtd) Pervaiz Musharraf said that a Pakistan Muslim-Nawaz win from the Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa is open to possibility.
    Speaking in a press conference here, he said that Pakistan Peoples` Party and PML-N can win the next general elections. “There are 90 percent chances that PMLN wins from Punjab and PPP from Sindh,” he added.
    He said that a political force is needed in Pakistan to defeat PPP and PML-N.
    Responding over a question he said that Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf  Imran Khan is correct in saying that a change is needed in Pakistan.
    Recently, Pakistan Muslim League Quaid President Chaudhry Shujaat in February with Gen (retd) Musharraf in Dubai and expressed combined resolve to move forward amicably in future.  
    According to PML-Q sources, in the meeting between the two coalition partners the current political situation of the country came under discussion. The two leaders also discussed framework for the upcoming elections in 2018.
    Sources said that the leaders also talked about the grievances on both the sides and decided to hold next round of talks with PML-Q leader Chaudhry Pervez Elahi.
    Shujaat Hussain upon his return will take into confidence his party leaders and devise future course of action, sources added.
    The former president has been quite active regarding the country’s political horizon since a while.
    In November 2016, an important meeting was held between Musharraf and representatives from MQM-Pakistan. MQM-Pakistan leader Khawaja Izhar met with the former president in Dubai and discussed the country’s political situation with an emphasis on Karachi.
    Former President General retired Pervez Musharraf left the country in March this year for Dubai where he has already restarted his political activities.

    Musharraf, 70, is facing a number of high profile cases, including murder and high treason. He was indicted for treason last year over his imposition of emergency rule in 2007.

    One French police officer was seriously burnt and two others injured in clashes at a May Day demonstration in Paris on Monday in which protesters threw Molotov cocktails and other missiles, the police said.
    Television pictures showed policemen trying to shake flames from their riot gear, and of tear gas enveloping the streets around Paris' Bastille monument.
    This year's May Day came less than a week ahead of the final round of a presidential election where voters must choose between the far-right National Front's Marine Le Pen and centrist Emmanuel Macron.
    Some trade unionists and left-wing activists sought to make the day one of national solidarity against the National Front, mirroring protests in 2002 when Le Pen's father, party founder Jean-Marie Le Pen, was a candidate.
    Marine Le Pen tweeted her support for the injured policemen and said the incident was the type of unacceptable behavior that she no longer wanted to see on French streets.

    RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Army on Monday categorically rejected Indian Army’s accusations of killing two members of an Indian army patrol near Line of Control.
    “Pakistan Army did not commit any ceasefire violation on line of control or a BAT action in Buttal sector (Indian Krishna Ghatti Sector) as alleged by India. Indian blame of mutilating Indian soldiers' bodies are also false”, an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said.
    “Pakistan Army is a highly professional force and shall never disrespect a soldier even Indian”, the statement further said.
    Indian Army had alleged that two members of an Indian army patrol were killed on LoC and then their bodies were mutilated.

    LAHORE: Two doctors, who were operating an illegal organ clinic, have been sent into the custody of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on a four-day physical remand.
    A local court, which was hearing the case, was informed that a case has been registered against the suspects as per the Human Organ Transplant Act.
    The equipment seized from the suspects has been sent to Islamabad for DNA testing.  
    The FIA wanted 14-day physical remand of the suspects; however, court ordered four-day physical remand.
    The doctors were arrested during a FIA raid at a private housing society on Saturday night.
    During the raid, the FIA officials caught the two doctors and their assistants conducting an illegal operation in the operation theater in the house.
    The arrested persons were identified as surgeon Dr Fawad, anaesthesia specialist Dr Altamash, who was also the general secretary of Young Doctors Association Punjab, and their assistants Imran and Shehzad.

    Actor Yasir Hussain on Saturday night made a crass joke about child molestation that has caught social media in a whirlwind of anger.
    When Ahsan Khan went up to the stage to receive his Hum Award for his role in Udaari – which raised the ultra delicate and less-talked-about issue of child molestation – Hussain said, “Itna khobsurat child molester, kash main bhi bacha hota. (Seeing such a good-looking child molester, I wish I was a child too!)”
    While some media outlets reported that the audience did not pause to call out Hussain on his insensitive remark and continued to laugh, Twitter was taking none of it.

    To add to this, it is said that the joke was not in the script.
    The question that follows, importantly, is that since extemporary comments shine a light on what a person is like on the inside, the side only they are aware of, is Hussain one of those who actually thinks abuse and other social issues are hilarious?
    But this is what Hussain has to say:
     
     
    “I am just as against child abuse as you all are. The joke I made is being portrayed in a different manner than I had originally intended to. I apologise to Ahsan bhai and the rest.”
     
     
    When someone from a local media outlet managed to talk to him, interestingly, this is what he had to say, “First of all, no one's talking about the first part of my segment which got a lot of laughs, why is the positive aspect of my performance being put aside?”
    "Secondly, when you improvise, things come out of your mouth that may not be appropriate. What I said, I said in praise of Ahsan Khan, it had nothing to do with child molestation. I certainly didn't mean to encourage child molestation. But if this hurts people, then I have said sorry for it," he continued.
    Really?
     
     
    You may already have good projects like movie Karachi Se Lahore and drama serial Dareecha under your belt, but it doesn’t excuse you from being inconsiderate towards social issues.
    While the show will, nevertheless, be remembered for this distasteful joke, let’s hope more awareness is spread about such issues.

    BARA/RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa has said that, with the write of the state large restored, Pakistan is progressing towards enduring peace and stability.
    The army chief said this while speaking to soldiers as he spent the day with troops deployed along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Khyber tribal agency.
    During his time with troops in Khyber agency on Monday, the COAS was briefed about operational preparedness and improved border security measures including the employment of the newly raised FC Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wings.
    According to an ISPR press release, the Army chief appreciated effective border security arrangements which have enhanced control on cross border terrorist movement.
    He also hailed the exceptionally high morale of troops and their undaunted determination to eliminate terrorism.

    "Our nation supports us due to our innumerable sacrifices we have made for defence and security of our motherland. Writ of the state has largely been restored and we are progressing towards enduring peace and stability," he said.
