    The White House press corps gathered on Saturday for its annual black-tie dinner, a toned-down affair this year after Donald Trump snubbed the event, becoming the first incumbent US president to bow out in 36 years.
    Without Trump, who scheduled a rally instead to mark his 100th day in office, the usually celebrity-filled soiree hosted by the White House Correspondents' Association took a more sober turn, even as it pulled in top journalists and Washington insiders.
    Most of Trump's administration also skipped the event in solidarity with the president, who has repeatedly accused the press of mistreatment. The president used his campaign-style gathering to again lambaste the media.
    "I could not possibly be more thrilled than to be more than 100 miles away," he told a crowd in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, calling out The New York Times, CNN, and MSNBC by name.
    In Washington, WHCA President Jeff Mason defended press freedom even as he acknowledged this year's dinner had a different feel, saying attempts to undermine the media was dangerous for democracy.
    "We are not fake news, we are not failing news organisations, and we are not the enemy of the American people," said Mason, a Reuters correspondent.
    Instead of the typical roasts – presidents of both parties have delivered their own zingers for years – the event returned to its traditional roots of recognising reporters' work and handing out student scholarships as famed journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein presented awards.
    "That's not Donald Trump's style," NBC News' Andrea Mitchell told MSNBC, referring to the self-deprecating jokes presidents in the past have made despite tensions with the press.
    Instead, the humour fell to headline comedian Hasan Minhaj.
    "Welcome to the series finale of the White House correspondents' dinner," Minhaj, who plays a correspondent on Comedy Central's The Daily Show program, told the crowd.
    He also joked about Trump, despite organisers' wishes, saying he did so to honour US constitutional protection of free speech, "Only in America can a first-generation, Indian-American Muslim kid get on this stage and make fun of the president."
    In a video message, actor Alec Baldwin, who has raised Trump's ire playing him on NBC's Saturday Night Live program also encouraged attendees.
    Few other celebrities graced the red carpet, although some well-known Washingtonians, such as former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Republican Representative Darrell Issa of California, appeared.
    Trump attended in 2011 when then-President Barack Obama made jokes at the expense of the New York real estate developer and reality television show host.
    In an interview with Reuters this week, Trump said he decided against attending as president because he felt he had been treated unfairly by the media, adding, "I would come next year, absolutely."
    In Pennsylvania, Trump told supporters the media dinner would be boring but was noncommittal on whether he would go in 2018 or hold another rally.
    Late night television show host Samantha Bee also hosted a competing event – "Not the White House Correspondents' Dinner" – that she said would honour journalists, rather than skewer Trump.

    Instead of eating less saturated fat and worrying about so-called bad cholesterol, a group of doctors suggests an alternative approach for preventing heart disease.
    More important, they say, is to focus on decreasing insulin resistance and inflammation in the body by targeting diet, exercise, and reducing stress.
    "If we target all those three things together (plus) a reduction of smoking then we’ll combat 80 percent of all heart disease," said Dr Aseem Malhotra of Lister Hospital in Stevenage, UK, who coauthored an editorial in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
    Saturated fats are mostly found in animal products like beef, pork, butter, cheese and other dairies.
    Blaming coronary artery disease on saturated fat that clogs arteries is "just plain wrong", according to Malhotra and his two coauthors, Dr Rita Redberg of the University of California, San Francisco and Dr Pascal Meier of University College London, UK.
    In their editorial, the three experts cite a 2015 review of past research that found no link between a diet full of saturated fats and an increased risk of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke due to clogged arteries, death from coronary heart disease, or death from any cause.
    Furthermore, Malhotra told Reuters Health, the traditional advice to reduce levels of "bad" low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol through diet and exercise "is flawed".
    He and his colleagues point to studies in which people who replaced saturated fat with vegetable oils containing omega-6 fatty acids did lower their LDL and total cholesterol levels but still ended up with a higher rate of death.
    They also cite the well-known PREDIMED trial, in which people eating a Mediterranean diet with fats from olive oil or nuts were at lower risk of heart problems than people following a low-fat diet.
    Another trial found better outcomes in people following a Mediterranean diet than in people eating a typical French diet, despite similar LDL levels in both groups.
    The best way to predict heart disease risk, they write, is to look at patients' ratio of total cholesterol to "good" high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. A high ratio is linked with insulin resistance, which leads to high blood sugar and higher risks for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity.
    Malhotra said insulin resistance is worsened when low-fat dieting leads people to eat more refined carbohydrates like white bread and white rice, which are not found in Mediterranean diets.
    He and his colleagues say Mediterranean diets, exercise and reducing stress all help combat inflammation.
    "I think the best way to reduce risk of heart disease and stay healthy is to concentrate on a heart-healthy Mediterranean style diet, regular physical activity, and not smoking," Redberg told Reuters Health by email.
    Dr Stephen Kopecky, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, agrees with the experts' inflammation theory but isn't ready to remove the emphasis on LDL cholesterol.
    Kopecky told Reuters Health that LDL levels are still an important measure to watch and treat with medications.
    Dr Dariush Mozaffarian, the dean of the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy in Boston, also says LDL levels are still important.
    "I think the message is correct that we need more focus on diet and reducing inflammation," Mozaffarian told Reuters Health. "It doesn’t mean we should throw out an additional tool focusing on LDL cholesterol and treatment."
    Prevention doesn't involve a choice between lifestyle changes or lowering cholesterol, Mozaffarian added.
    "It's both," he said.

    BOGOTA: Twenty people died in the collapse of a residential building in the northern Colombian city of Cartagena, the mayor said on Twitter Saturday after a two-day rescue operation.
    The tragedy occurred Thursday, when the six-story building came crashing down for reasons that are being investigated, the Red Cross told AFP.
    Emergency personnel saved 41 people from the rubble, 16 of them badly hurt.
    The mayor, Manolo Duque, said 12 of the 20 people killed had been identified so far. A mass was being held late Saturday for the deceased.

    HAVANA: A plane crash in western Cuba on Saturday killed eight military personnel, the ministry in charge of the island´s armed forces said.
    The Russian-made AN-26 aircraft crashed in a mountainous region of western Artemisa province, killing all eight on board including the plane´s crew, the Revolutionary Armed Forces ministry said in a statement carried by state media.
    The plane had taken off from Playa Baracoa airport just outside the capital Havana. It crashed into a mountain, Loma de la Pimienta, 35 miles (55 kilometers) distant.
    The ministry said it was investigating the causes of the accident.

    NEW YORK: Don't look for the outperformance of growth stocks to fade anytime soon, as long as corporate earnings continue to improve and hopes remain for stronger economic growth.
    The Russell 1000 Growth index, which tracks such shares, is up 10.9 percent so far this year, outpacing the US benchmark S&P 500 stock index's 6.6 percent rise and the 2.8 percent advance of the Russell 1000 Value index.
    And it's not just a US phenomenon. Growth stocks – whose profits are expected to grow at a faster pace than the broader market – are also outperforming their value counterparts in Asia and Europe. Still, the appeal of riskier stocks perceived as better positioned to ride an accelerating global earnings tailwind, as opposed to those with a greater cushion of safety, is nowhere as far ahead as it is on Wall Street.
    In the United States, an improving outlook for corporate earnings should help keep growth names in vogue, according to John Praveen, chief investment strategist at Prudential International Investments Advisers LLC in Newark, New Jersey.
    The average estimate of analysts for earnings per share growth this year of S&P 500 companies has risen to 11.3 percent from 10.9 percent at the start of the month, according to Thomson Reuters data, a trend that should continue to blunt concerns about lofty growth valuations.
    "When you have an earnings recovery, growth stocks will outperform. When you don't have good earnings, that's when people are looking for value," said Praveen.
    Hopes for pro-business US policy changes under the administration of President Donald Trump will likely also keep expectations for economic growth elevated, helping to maintain the case for growth stocks.
    "The value stocks have done okay but growth has done so much better in the anticipation we'll see a pickup in economic growth," said Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Asset Management in Chicago. "Companies that are going to be more levered to economic growth tend to be growth stocks."
    "Right now I don't see a long-term condition for value stocks to outperform growth," said Nolte.
    To be sure, some strategists are less convinced that growth stock outperformance will continue indefinitely.
    While value stocks, which are cheaper relative to their earnings potential, have tended to do better in slower growth environments historically, JP Morgan Asset Management's global market strategist David Lebovitz says that trend has been changing.
    "It’s not going to be smooth sailing for one or the other. We think there'll be times people are more optimistic about the economy and in those cases, value can rally. Then you'll see periods where people are less optimistic about the economy, as we've seen over the course of the first quarter," he said.
    If economic trends look better in the second quarter, value stocks will do better, Lebovitz said.
    In Asia, the MSCI AC Asia ex Japan growth index, is up 18.5 percent so far this year, compared with a 12.6 percent gain for the comparable MSCI value index.
    Investment in India, traditionally a growth-driven market, has adjusted in recent years as value stocks have narrowed the gap with growth, which still leads, said Jayesh Shroff, co-founder of investment advisory Cask Capital in Mumbai.
    "That is because people were paying a premium for growth and somehow the growth did not materialise. That's why value came back and growth has taken a slight back seat," said Shroff. Still, he said as soon as growth returns, he expects investors to switch their focus back from value.
    In China, between 2009 and the 2015 stock market crash, small-cap growth stocks were the market’s darlings, but "a new rotation into value blue-chip investments started in 2016”, according to Zhou Liang, a fund manager at Shanghai Minority Asset Management Co.
    “In 2017, money will flow into blue-chips, as small-caps weaken and lose their lustre,” said Zhou.
    In Europe, the best outlook for corporate profits in seven years has ignited investor appetite for growth stocks, which are now up twice as much as their value counterparts so far this year, a reversal of the trend seen last year.
    As a result, the MSCI International Europe growth Index has jumped 8.9 percent this year so far, compared with a 4.5 percent gain for the MSCI International Europe Value index.
    With such a big gap between US growth and value stocks, some investors are eying overseas investments.
    "The entire US market is very expensive. Value investors definitely don't like to chase expensive valuations," said Michael O’Rourke, chief market strategist at JonesTrading in Greenwich, Connecticut. "I wouldn't expect to see a rotation until you saw a correction where both stock types are lower."

    NEW YORK: Al Pacino was considered too short, Marlon Brando was required to do a screen test, and director Francis Ford Coppola was almost fired.
    The director and cast of The Godfather reminisced on Saturday in a 445th-anniversaryreunion in New York about the trials, perseverance, and inspiration that resulted in the Oscar-winning Mafia movies.
    Coppola, Pacino, Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, James Caan, Talia Shire, and Robert Duvall watched back-to-back screenings of The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather: Part II (1974) along with an audience of 6,000 on the closing night of the Tribeca film festival.
    "I haven't seen these movies for years," Coppola said. "I found (watching) a very emotional experience. I forgot a lot about the making of it and thought about the story, and the story used a lot of family and my personal stuff."
    The two films won nine Oscars and their tale of how an orphan from Sicily emigrated to the United States at the turn of the 20th century and formed the Corleone crime family became movie classics. But the film had a less than auspicious start. Coppola recalled that Hollywood studio Paramount wanted to set the movie in the 1970s and make something "cheap and quick".
    Coppola was almost fired several times and met stiff resistance to the casting of both Pacino as Michael Corleone and Brando as the titular Godfather.
    Brando, who died in 2004, had made several box-office flops after a stellar career in the 1950s and had a reputation for being difficult.
    "I was told (by studio executives ) that having Brando in the film would make it less commercial than having a total unknown," Coppola said.
    The studio later agreed "if Marlon will do a screen test and do it for nothing and put up a million dollar bond that he wouldn't cause trouble during the production".
    Brando created the rasping voice, jowly cheeks, and oiled hair for Corleone in the screen test. Yet three weeks into shooting, there was more trouble.
    "They (the studio) hated Brando. They thought he mumbled and they hated the film...It was very dark," said Coppola. Brando went on to win an Oscar for his performance.
    Newcomer Pacino had to screen test "countless times" for the role of Michael, the college-educated son who takes charge of the Corleone business of casinos, gambling, and racketeering. Studio bosses though he was too short and wanted to cast Robert Redford or Ryan O'Neal.
    Yet Coppola persevered because "every time I read the script, I always saw his (Pacino's) face, especially in the scenes in Sicily".
    Pacino said he originally wanted the part of the hot-headed son, Sonny, and thought Coppola "was really nuts" about wanting him to play Michael.
    "I thought this is either a dream or a joke...and then started the whole trial of them not wanting me and Francis wanting me," Pacino recalled. The film launched his career as one of the most honoured actors of his generation.
    Luck played a part in the creation of some of the most memorable scenes in the two films. The revelation by Corleone's wife Kay (Keaton) that she had aborted their baby because of horror over her husband's criminal activities was suggested by Talia Shire (Connie).
    And the cat Brando cradles in the opening scene of The Godfather, making for a stark contrast with his intimidating presence, was a last-minute addition.
    "I put that cat in his hands. It was the studio cat. It was one take," said Coppola.

    STUTTGART: Maria Sharapova lost in the semi-finals in Stuttgart on Saturday, her controversial comeback from a 15-month doping ban ending in defeat to one of her biggest critics.
    Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam winner and former world number one, lost 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to Kristina Mladenovic as the Russian exited her first tournament back from a ban after testing positive for meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open.
    "I´m not angry, I´d have loved to have used the opportunity when I was ahead in the second set, so I had a bit of a let down which allowed her to get back in the match, gain confidence and play well," said Sharapova.
    Mladenovic has been a vocal critic of Sharapova´s return to tennis and on the eve of their semi accused her of getting "extra help", having been handed wild cards to play at the Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome tournaments.
    Having started her comeback with a world ranking of zero on Wednesday, due to her ban, reaching the semi-final means Sharapova has already moved up to 260th in the world.
    Sharapova refused to blame a lack of fitness for her defeat, but says she needs match practise after her enforced break.
    "If at the start of the week I´d said I´d be in this position, I´d be pretty happy with that," she said.
    "The way I played, I was really happy with that. You are never sure what level you are going to come onto the court with, but I feel this is a great base with which I started here."
    Sharapova will learn on May 16 whether she will be given a wild card for the main draw at Roland Garros and Mladenovic was complimentary of the Russian after her semi-final victory.
    "She´s a tough player and was very aggressive from the first ball," said Mladenovic after their titanic duel over two hours, 38 minutes.
    "I was struggling early on, but just stuck in there and fought, so I am very happy that it paid off."
    Sharapova made light work of Mladenovic in the first set, which lasted just 35 minutes.
    But Mladenovic, ranked 19th in the world, rallied superbly at 2-0 down in the second, holding her serve and breaking Sharapova in what turned into a battle of nerves.
    Mladenovic showed the first signs of cracking when what should have been a simple return spiralled harmlessly off her racquet as she served with the advantage at 5-5.
    But she held her composure and went 6-5 ahead, having defended three break points, as her superbly weighted drop shot wrong-footed Sharapova.
    The French player then took the second set, which lasted 64 minutes, breaking Sharapova by converting her first set point.
    The deciding set followed serve until 3-3, but Sharapova had to hold her nerve, defending a break point at 40-30 down in the fourth game with a ferociously hit ace and a fist pump.
    Mladenovic seized the advantage by converting her fourth break point and then came from 40-0 down in the seventh game to take a commanding 5-2 lead.
    Sharapova rallied to pull it back to 5-4, but Mladenovic was not to be denied her first win over the Russian and converted her first match point.
    Mladenovic will now face Germany´s Laura Siegemund in Sunday´s final after the wild card beat fourth seed Simona Halep of Romania 6-4, 7-5.
    Having lost last year´s Stuttgart final to fellow German Angelique Kerber, Siegemund is hoping to claim her second career title having also knocked out seeds Sveltana Kuznetsova and Karolina Pliskova this week.

    While Sindh and Balochistan experience fiery temperatures, various areas in Lahore enjoyed light rain over the weekend.
    Temperatures in Karachi and Hyderabad are expected to surge as high as 41° Celsius on Sunday, as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts very hot weather conditions in Sindh and lower Balochistan during the next 12-24 hours. Dry conditions are predicted to prevail in most parts of the country.
    However, light rain with thunder is expected at some places in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and adjoining hilly areas.
    Almost 18mm and 17mm of rain were recorded in Rawalakot and Kotli, respectively, on Saturday.
    Weather seems to be slightly indecisive, as an intense heatwave hits Sindh and hot winds blow in Balochistan, but a shallow westerly wave is impacting northern areas – likely to move eastwards during the next 12-18 hours.
    Lasbela is set to experience temperatures shooting to 44° Celsius, while 43° Celsius is predicted in Rohri and Chhor.
    On the other hand, Sindh’s Jacobabad, Larkana, Sukkur, Nawabshah, and Hyderabad, Balochistan’s Lasbela and Naseerabad, and Multan, Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, and Bahawalnagar in South Punjab are forecasted to stay extremely hot for the next 24 hours.

    KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by its chairperson Imran Khan, will take to the streets of the metropolis today for the ‘Huqooq-e-Karachi march’.
    In a video message earlier, Imran Khan called on the people of Karachi to join in the march to protest for their rights. The walk is scheduled to begin on Sunday, 3pm from Mazar-e-Quaid.
    “I invite the people of Karachi to join me in the walk to demand their rights. The sole purpose of the march is to highlight the day-to-day problems faced by the residents of Karachi and to pressurise the government to resolve these problems,” Khan said in the message.
    The PTI chief added that the walk aims to bring to the spotlight issues such as loadshedding, water shortage and garbage disposal.
    “Today’s walk will send a message that when people don’t get their rights, they stand up and protest,” he said.
    A week ago, PTI took to the streets of Karachi to mobilise and invite the public for the ‘Huqooq-e-Karachi’ march. Legendary cricketer Wasim Akram is also set to join the march today.
    Meanwhile, a heat wave is forecasted in the city, with temperatures predicted to rise up to 41 degrees Celsius today.

    LAHORE: A truck and rickshaw collision burnt to death a rickshaw driver and his three sons Saturday night in Shad Bagh on Amir Road, Lahore.
    According to the police, rickshaw driver Yaqoob alias Mithu, along with his family, was driving from Jalu when his vehicle collided with a garbage truck. Subsequently, the gas cylinder installed in the rickshaw exploded, causing fire to erupt. It burnt to death Yaqoob and his three sons, while his wife, 40, and sister-in-law, 35-year-old Sana, got injured.
    The two women were taken to Mayo Hospital, where they were being treated.
    The deceased rickshaw driver was a resident of Data Nagar, Sher Shah Road. His sons who were killed in the accident were eight-year-old Farman, six-year-old Rehan and three-year-old Tauseef.
    As it is the rickety condition of rickshaws make them vulnerable to accidents, the dangerous placement of gas cylinders and risky ways of drivers make the vehicle a more dangerous ride.
    Around two months back, at least five labourers were killed while one was injured when a Karachi-bound train rammed into a motorcycle rickshaw in Basirpur, Okara. According to the eyewitnesses, the rickshaw driver had tried to cross the railway track without noticing the train that was approaching. As a result, five labourers, who were onboard in the motorcycle rickshaw, died on the spot, while the driver was injured. He was shifted to a hospital where doctors stated his condition to be critical.
    The deceased were going to work in potato fields, said their relatives. Police said the train, Fareed Express, was en route to Karachi from Lahore. The accident took place when the vehicle reached Akhtarabad near Basirpur. The railway authorities had requested a case be filed against the rickshaw driver.

    BRIDGETOWN: Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq is expecting his team not fall prey to over-confidence as they seek an historic series-clinching win in the second Test against the West Indies beginning on Sunday at Kensington Oval.
    Buoyed by a seven-wicket triumph in Jamaica, and with the home team struggling to compete, there is a heightened sense of anticipation for the tourists to achieve a double-first at what is considered the spiritual home of Caribbean cricket -- a Test win at the venue and a Test series triumph ahead of the final match in Dominica a week later.
    "Sometimes that is the main problem with the Pakistan team -- you win a game and then become complacent. We don´t want that," Misbah cautioned on the eve of the match.
    "It is more important for us to be at the top of our game in batting and bowling than worrying about who you are playing."
    Despite the success at Sabina Park, there is growing expectation that fast-medium bowler Hasan Ali, who was ruled out in Kingston because of a leg muscle strain but is now fit again, will come into the final eleven, possibly at the expense of the pacy but occasionally wayward Wahab Riaz.
    While Misbah remained non-commital as to the selection options, he concurred with West Indian counterpart Jason Holder that the Kensington pitch looked extremely dry.
    This introduces the possibility, although considered remote, of Shadab Khan providing a double leg-spin attack in support of the established Yasir Shah, whose six wickets in the second innings of the first Test and eight in the match earned him the man of the match award.
    Leading the West Indies in a Test for the first time in his home island, Holder hoped his team could take encouragement from their series-ending victory in Sharjah last November and eliminate the mistakes that cost them dearly in Jamaica.
    "We have shown that we have what it takes to win, so we just have to tick our boxes in terms of getting some runs, taking our chances (in the field) when they come, and the bowlers have to be able to get 20 wickets," he observed.
    "It´s especially important that we put runs on the board in the first innings because that sets up the game quite nicely for you."
    Having featured two debutants in a first Test top-order that failed to deliver significantly in both innings, it is anticipated that one of either Shimron Hetmyer or Vishaul Singh will make way for Jermaine Blackwood, who was surprisingly omitted in the series-opener to accommodate the newcomers.
    Opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite, whose unbeaten innings of 142 and 60 in Sharjah set up that rare win, will be under increased scrutiny to provide that stability at the top of the order following his double-failure a week earlier.
    Mindful of the countdown to the end of the distinguished international careers of both himself and fellow middle-order stalwart Younis Khan in less than two weeks´ time, Misbah noted that he was heartened by the competitive spirit in the camp.
    "They look more determined to win this series badly because it will be the first series win here," he explained. "For myself and Younis that´s good to see."

    LONDON: Young gun Anthony Joshua got up off the canvas to stop former champion Wladimir Klitschko Saturday in the 11th round of a heavyweight world title fight that is being hailed as an epic.
    In a tumultuous atmosphere at Wembley Stadium, 90,000 fans saw the undefeated 27-year-old add the World Boxing Association (WBA) title to his International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt sparked by a devastating right uppercut that led to the 41-year-old Klitschko being felled in the 11th.
    The Ukrainian former world champion rose unsteadily before being floored again.
    He bravely got up once more but referee David Fields waved it off soon after as he was unable to defend himself against a barrage of Joshua blows on the ropes.
    American Boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard was among those who immediately hailed the contest as ´amazing´.
    "Such an amazing fight with 2 great fighters. Lot of heart by both fighters. A lot of questions answered by @anthonyfjoshua #JoshuaKlitchsko," he tweeted.
    Lennox Lewis paid tribute to Klitschko for getting up twice in the 11th from devastating Joshua punches.
    "How much heart did @Klitschko show in this fight? Gotta respect it. Hold ur head high brother! #joshuaklitschko." tweeted the Briton who was the last man to be the undisputed world heavyweight champion.
    The Ukrainian had also been sent crashing to the floor in the fifth round as the 27-year-old British fighter took his perfect record to 19 stoppage wins in 19 fights.
    "What can I say? 19-0, three and a half years in the game. As I said, I´m not perfect but I´m trying and if you don´t take part you´re going to fail," said Joshua who was put on the canvas for the first time in his career in the sixth round of the see-saw battle.
    ´Leave your ego at the door´
    "As boxing states, you leave your ego at the door and you respect your opponent. So a massive shout out to Wladimir Klitschko," said Joshua.
    A third defence of his IBF world heavyweight title also earned Joshua the vacant WBA belt as he became the first British heavyweight since Lewis in 2002 to hold two versions of the world title.
    It was Klitschko´s first stoppage defeat since Lamon Brewster beat him in 2004 and leaves his record at 64 wins and five defeats.
    "The best man won tonight and it´s a massive event for boxing," Klitschko told Sky Sports.
    "Two gentleman fought each other. Anthony was better today. It´s really sad I didn´t make it tonight."
    Klitschko was trying to reclaim two of the three belts he lost to Joshua´s fellow Briton Tyson Fury by an upset on points in November 2015.
    The Ukrainian had not fought since then and entered the ring as the underdog in front of Britain´s largest boxing attendance since 1939.
    Klitschko could not establish his jab in the first round and it was Joshua who landed more punches, with the best being a left hook in the opening minute.
    Sledgehammer left hand
    Joshua began the second confidently and repeatedly found Klitschko with his jab.
    The Briton missed with a big overhand right at the start of the third round but then connected with a sledgehammer left hand.
    Klitschko began the fourth full of intent but it was Joshua who started quicker in a thunderous fifth round.
    The Briton wobbled Klitschko with a left before landing a series of clubbing blows, including a cracking right uppercut, which sent the Ukrainian to the canvas.
    Klitschko got up but was on unsteady legs and began swinging wildly.
    Joshua suddenly became static on the ropes after punching himself out. Klitschko seized his moment and began to land flush as he took control.
    In the sixth, Joshua´s early confidence had evaporated and he was dropped by a right hand to the temple.
    He was up at eight and immediately had to duck a big left from Klitschko before surviving the round.
    In the 11th Joshua uncorked a sweet right uppercut to snap back Klitschko´s head, followed by another right to send his opponent to the canvas.
    Klitschko courageously got up but was nailed by another right and another right uppercut and went down again.
    Klitschko got up but when Joshua started to pile on the pressure referee Fields had no option but to save the brave Ukrainian from further punishment.

    KARACHI: Three of a family were injured after a drunk police volunteer trampled them under his car in Karachi late Saturday, police said.
    The incident took place in Azizabad area of the city, in which a police volunteer, Shiraz, trampled a man, his wife and daughter under his car.
    Citizens got hold of the drunk man and roughed him up until police came. Raged crowd also damaged the vehicle used by the volunteer.
    The law enforcers took the man and his vehicle into custody, and moved them to police station.
    The wounded people were shifted to hospital.

    HARRISBURG, US: Donald Trump on Saturday hailed his "very productive" first 100 days as America´s president and told a cheering crowd of supporters "great battles" lay ahead.
    In an enthusiastic, campaign-style rally in Pennsylvania -- a key state in his election win -- Trump said the record of his first 100 days "has been very exciting and very productive," ticking off a list of what he said were his achievements.
    He said he was now to "get ready for the great, great battles to come and that we will win in every case."
    The crowd often interrupted Trump with cheers of "USA!, USA!"
    "So I have a question for you. You´ve been to a lot of rallies. First of all, is there any place like a Trump rally, in all fairness?", Trump said after one burst of cheers.
    Signs held up by the crowd had slogans such as "Promises made. Promises kept."
    Trump said major accomplishments in his first 100 days included seeing a Supreme Court nominee confirmed by the Senate, pulling the US out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade accord, a rising stock market and the easing of regulations on exploration for energy.

    LAHORE: At least three people were injured as youth in Lahore engaged in kite flying on weekend night, Geo News has learnt.
    In first incident in Singhpura area, a 31-year-old man was injured after a kite string slit his neck and hand. The man, Qadeer, was shifted to Mayo Hospital, where he got six stitches on his neck.
    Ali Hassan,25, and Abrar, 28, were also wounded in similar incidents in Dhobi Ghat and Railway Station areas. They were also shifted to Mayo Hospital.
    Citizens complained that violation of a ban on kite flying during nighttime has become a routine in Salamatpura, Harbanspura, Journalist Colony and several other areas.
    On the other hand, a number of bike-riding youths continued to cause commotion by performing different stunts on Canal Road and other thoroughfares.
    Police caught four youngsters and a motorbike mechanic involved in one-wheeling from Sanda area.

    KARACHI: Airport Security Force (ASF) personnel late on Saturday seized one-and-a-half kilogram heroin from a passenger at Karachi airport, an ASF spokesman said.
    The passenger, Ali Sher, wanted to smuggle the stash of heroin to Saudi Arabia, the spokesman said.
    The suspect wanted to board a Saudi-bound flight of a private airline, but he was caught red-handed at Jinnah International Airport, Karachi.
    He was handed over to the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) for further investigation.

    FAISALABAD: A station house officer among two policemen was killed in a shooting incident in Faisalabad late Saturday, police sources said.
    The incident took place near General Bus Stand in Faisalabad, when police signalled a suspected vehicle to pull over, sources informed Geo News.
    Unknown suspects inside the car opened fire on the cops, injuring three police personnel among five people.
    SHO Madina Town Nadeem Anjum and Constable Shehzad later succumbed to their wounds.
    Three others, including one policeman, remain under treatment at a hospital.
    The perpetrators managed to flee away from the scene.

    KARACHI: A woman was found dead inside a Karachi hotel room late Saturday, in what the police suspect as a murder.
    The body of the woman identified as Farheen, 28, was found from a room on the 6th storey of a hotel in Karachi's Saddar area, SSP South Saqib Ismail said. She was allegedly strangled.
    The official said the deceased had married a man, Shaheen, some two months ago after having fallen in love with him.
    Police suspect the woman was murdered and the culprit tried to purport it as suicide.
    The body was shifted to a hospital for medico-legal formalities.
    Police are on the lookout for the deceased woman's husband.

    KARACHI: Another blaze erupted inside a building located on Karachi's II Chundrigar Road late Saturday, firefighting officials said, for the second time in a day.
    Early on Saturday, the fire had engulfed 17 and 19 storeys of the building, which was doused after 12 hours of intense efforts.
    However, the blaze has once again caught 15th storey of the same building. Around five fire tenders have been busy in putting out the fire.
    Firefighting officials maintain the blaze is of low intensity and would soon be brought under control.
    Blaze erupts at a factory
    Meanwhile, another fire broke out at a factory in New Karachi's Sector 5-D, officials said.
    They added that a fire tender is en route to the factory to douse the blaze.

    MARDAN: Prime suspect of Mashal Khan murder case, Imran confessed to his crime before a city magistrate on Saturday.
    In his confessional statement, Imran said that he opened fire at Mashal because the deceased was guilty of blasphemy and he does not regret killing him.
    Imran, a fellow student of Mashal, had fired three shots at Mashal Khan, of which two hit the deceased. The pistol used in the murder has also been seized.
    The shooter was presented in an anti-terrorism court on Friday and remanded in police custody for four days along with other five other suspects.

    DPO Mardan had stated that 47 of the 49 accused in the case have been arrested. He added that there are reports of two accused hiding in tribal areas.
    On April 27, police said the person who shot Mashal Khan had been arrested.
    Five days earlier, an employee of the university wanted for inciting the mob which murdered Mashal was also arrested.
    Abdul Wali Khan University Student Mashal Khan was killed by an angry mob who had accused him of blasphemy on April 13.

    ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet division on Saturday issued a notification, ordering the withdrawal of the portfolio of Foreign Affairs from the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi.
    “In terms of rule 4(6) of the Rules of Business, 1973, the Prime Minister has been pleased to withdraw the portfolio of Foreign Affairs, with immediate effect, from Mr Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister with the status of Minister of State,” the notification read.
    Earlier today, an order released by the PM Office said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had approved the recommendations of the Dawn leaks Inquiry committee.
    "The Prime Minister, having considered the findings of the Committee as to its terms of reference, is pleased to approve its recommendations in para 18 of the report," read an order released by the PM Office.

    The order said that Rao Tehsin Ali, the principal information officer at the Information Ministry, would be proceeded against under the E&D rules 1973 on the charges based on the report findings.
    Later in the evening, Establishment Division issued a notification, transferring Principal Information Officer Press Information Department Rao Tehseen and asking him to report to the Division immediately.
    It added that the role of the editor of Dawn Newspaper, Zaffar Abbas, and reporter Cyril Almeida will be referred to the All Pakistan Newspaper Association (APNS) for necessary disciplinary action to be taken against them.

    The order also said that the APNS will be asked to develop a code of conduct for the media, "especially when dealing with issues relating to security of Pakistan and to ensure that stories on issues of national importance and security are published by abiding to basic journalistic and editorial norms".
    But, shortly after the government's announcement, the military's media Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a short statement saying that Army rejects the government notification and that it is "incomplete and not in line with recommendations by the Inquiry Board".
    How did it start?
    An English-language daily, Dawn, had published the story on October 6, last year, in which journalist Cyril Almeida had written about an alleged civil-military rift during a National Security Committee (NSC) meeting over the issue of tackling jihadi outfits.
    The story stirred a major controversy last year, resulting in resignation of Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed and Almeida coming under fire.
    An inquiry committee was formed comprising one member each from the ISI, MI and IB, Secretary Establishment, Tahir Shahbaz, Ombudsman Punjab Najam Saeed, and an FIA director.

    The inquiry committee in its report had placed blame on Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi and Principal Information Officer at the Press Information Department Rao Tehsin, sources had earlier told Geo News.
    The report stated that the publishing of the story was a failure on part of some government institutions including Information Ministry and Foreign Ministry.
    PM Office order
    Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif approved on Saturday the recommendations of the Dawn leaks Inquiry committee, withdrawing the portfolio of Foreign Affairs from his Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi, according to an order of PM Office.
    The executive said that Rao Tehsin Ali, the principal information officer at the Information Ministry, would also be sanctioned, adding the editor of Dawn Newspaper, Zaffar Abbas, and reporter Cyril Almeida will be referred to the All Pakistan Newspaper Association (APNS) “for necessary disciplinary action.”
    The order also said that the APNS will be asked to develop a code of conduct for the media, "especially when dealing with issues relating to security of Pakistan and to ensure that stories on issues of national importance and security are published by abiding to basic journalistic and editorial norms".

    Army’s reaction
    Reacting to the statement, the Pakistan Army rejected and said it was incomplete and not in line with the recommendations by the inquiry board.
    The Army announced the rejection in a tweet sent out by DG ISPR Major-General Asif Ghafoor from his official account: “Notification on Dawn Leak is incomplete and not in line with recommendations by the Inquiry Board. Notification is rejected.”
    Only interior ministry can issue notification: Nisar
    Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said that PM Office does not have the right to issue a notification; only Interior Ministry can issue it. “A non-issue has been turned into an issue, he remarked.
    He said, the notification “will be according to the unanimous recommendations of the [Dawn Leaks inquiry] committee."

    PTI’s reaction
    According to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, the Dawn Leaks inquiry is a deliberate attempt to malign Pakistan Army.
    Imran Khan tweeted that government must immediately make the complete inquiry report public.
    Meanwhile, another PTI leader Naeem-ul-Haque accused the federal government of "concealing the truth", demanding that it releases the detailed report by the inquiry committee.

    The nation wants to know if the committee also probed the prime minister, his daughter Maryam Nawaz, and the PM's Principal Secretary Fawad Hassan Fawad.
    "We would like to know what role Tariq Fatemi and others played in discrediting the military," he said, adding that the government should avoid concealing facts.
    Nisar should immediately resign: Khursheed Shah
    Opposition Leader Khursheed Shah called for the immediate resignation of Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar over the Dawn Leaks statement on Saturday, adding all that has come to the forefront regarding Dawn Leaks notification is quite sad.

    SARGODHA: Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif said that he will quit politics if it is proven that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairperson Imran Khan was offered Rs10 billion to stay mum on Panama case.
    “I will also apologise to the nation if these allegations are proven,” he remarked.
    However, if the decision comes against Imran Khan, then the PTI leader will be crowned as ‘IG of Liars’.
    Last week, Imran Khan had alleged that he was offered Rs10 billion to stay quiet on the Panama case. Refusing to disclose the name of the person who made the offer, Imran had said that the person was a close aide of Shehbaz Sharif.
    This led to a political turmoil and heated exchange of words between Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz and PTI leaders.
    The federal government also decided to sue Imran Khan over his allegations, sources had informed Geo News, adding that the decision was taken in a high-level consultative meeting, held to review the Supreme Court’s decision on Panama Leaks case.
    Reacting to this, Imran Khan had remarked that the people who want to know the name of the person, who made the offer, can take him to court. He said that he’s not revealing the name of the one who tried to bribe him, only out of consideration that the person would be forced to go out of business due to vengeful activities.
    One the occasion, CM Punjab also announced Rs5 billion funds for Educational Endowment Fund and said that Metro Bus Project will also be inaugurated in Sargodha.
