    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has submitted documents detailing trail of money sent by his ex-wife, Jemima Goldsmith, to purchase land for his Bani Gala residence in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

    The Supreme Court has been hearing a petition filed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi regarding ?foreign funding? of the PTI and served notices to Imran Khan and his party in May, over issues relating to money trail surrounding purchase of the PTI chief?s estate in Bani Gala.
    The apex court had asked 14 questions from the PTI chairman regarding purchase of Bani Gala land and an offshore firm he owned. This had prompted Imran to contact his ex-wife Jemima Goldsmith, asking for the record of bank transactions for the purchase of land.

    However, the PTI chairman, through his lawyer, on Wednesday requested the court to keep the Jemima's bank accounts and other details with itself and not make them public. He also attached his former wife's Luxembourg Bank letters to the details submitted in the apex court.
    According to the documents, Jemima transferred $275,678 and $217,000 in Rashid Khan's account on July 29 and April 8, 2002, respectively.
    The documents stated that Jemima's account details establish transfer of $258,333, while she deposited another $100000 on January 22, 2003.
    However, this could not be confirmed as to which bank she transferred $100,000.

    Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will be questioned on Thursday by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT), set up by the Supreme Court to investigate corruption claims that surfaced following the Panama Papers leak.

    The PM House on Monday confirmed the prime minister had received a summons by the JIT. It will be the first time a sitting prime minister will appear before any investigative agency.
    The prime minister is slated to appear before the investigation team at 11am.

    The premier's brother, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has also been summoned by the JIT on June 17.

    Former interior minister and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Rehman Malik, who previously led a corruption investigation focusing on the incumbent premier, has also been summoned by the JIT and is scheduled to appear before the investigators on June 23.
    Meanwhile, Qatari Prince Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jaber Al-Thani, who wrote an earlier letter in favour of Sharif, has said that the royal family member has no qualms if investigators visit him in Doha to record his statement.

    Sons of the prime minister, Hussain and Hassan Nawaz, have so far made multiple appearances before the JIT. Hussain has been questioned five times by the investigation team while Hassan has appeared before it twice. 
    PM Sharif has denied any wrongdoing over his family allegedly using offshore companies to buy luxury flats in a posh London neighbourhood, and has said his family wealth was acquired legally.

    In April, the Supreme Court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to remove Sharif from office on the back of the Panama Papers leaks, but it ordered further investigations under a JIT. 

    The JIT team comprises members from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Military Intelligence, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). 
    The investigation team has asked the the prime minister to bring "all relevant records, documents and material" to the interview.

    "It?s a litmus test of our laws that all citizens are equal in front of the law, so we believe that Nawaz Sharif should appear before JIT in this case," said Naeem ul Haque, spokesman for the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
    The Supreme Court began investigating Sharif after the main political parties failed to agree on a committee to probe the Panama Papers leaks, and PTI chairman Imran Khan threatened mass protests and to shut down Islamabad.

    Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif felicitated the Pakistan cricket team and the nation over the historic win, as the Green Shirts made it to the Champions Trophy final for the first time ever.

    "The entire team secured a remarkable victory over the English side, demonstrating exceptional commitment and passion for winning the crucial game," the premier said in a statement.

    The entire side, led by captain Sarfraz Ahmed, deserves praise, he stated, expressing well wishes for the team in the final.
    Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa congratulated the Pakistan team, wishing them good luck for Sunday's final.
    Former Pakistan captain-turned-politician Imran Khan also felicitated the Sarfraz-XI for having been into the Champions Trophy final. He praised the team for playing exceptionally well against the English side.

    Hassan got bowling figures of three for 35 in his quota of ten overs in the semifinal against England on Wednesday, which helped Pakistan restrict the hosts for mere 211 runs on board

    President Mamnoon Hussain, speaker and deputy speaker of the National Assembly, Chairman Senate Raza Rabbani also felicitated the Pakistan team for winning the semi-final.
    PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, AML chief Sheikh Rasheed, JI emir Sirajul Haq, Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif, Opposition Leader Khursheed Shah were also among the ones who congratulated the team for their remarkable victory.

    ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Wednesday said unilateral actions, such as drone strikes, are counter-productive and against the spirit of cooperation and intelligence sharing, said a statement released by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). 

    ?Pakistan Army is capable of taking effective measures if actionable intelligence is shared,? said the statement from the military?s media wing.
    Gen Bajwa further said that focus is now towards transforming operational achievements in Fata into enduring peace and stability.
    The army chief elaborated that in order to achieve stability and enduring peace in the tribal areas, they region needs to be mainstreamed through reforms and the ?Pakistan Army fully supports all efforts towards that end?. 
    ?Our brave tribal brothers, through their support, cooperation and resolve have enabled the security forces to succeed during the operations and now it is time to live a fearless and quality social life as citizens of Pakistan,? said Bajwa.
    Gen Bajwa added that the army would continue to consolidate gains achieved through various security operations.
    The statement added that the army stands with all other institutions of Pakistan to rid it of all menaces which are ?retarding its progress and prosperity?.  
    Referring to Afghanistan, the ISPR quoted the army chief as saying that Afghanistan is our brotherly neighbour and a common enemy exists in both the countries. 

    The army chief was on a visit of Peshawar Corps Headquarters and was briefed on the situation along the Pak-Afghan border, operations in progress and future operations and measures taken for border management.

    Despite Bollywood actor Salman Khan being all too busy these days with the promotion of his upcoming film ?Tubelight?, he still has some time to share his thoughts on the subject of war.
    The film depicts the ordeal of someone who lost a loved one to war. Salman Khan recently during the promotion of his film expressed his opinion on warmongering.
    Salman said those who ask for war should go fight it themselves. ?Take this gun and go to war. (They will realise it) and it will get over in a day. They will tremble and shake and they will eventually take the route of dialogues and discussions,? said the famous actor, according to a Hindustan Times report.
    Salman?s brother Sohail Khan is the co-actor in the film. He was also of the opinion that war hurts people and loved ones are taken away.
    Salman and Sohail portray two brothers in the film who get separated due to war during the 1962 Indo-China war, as the brother in the Indian army gets captured by the Chinese army.
    The film is said to release on June 23, 2017.

    ALEXANDRIA: At least five people people including a top Republican congressman were wounded in a Washington suburb early Wednesday morning when a shooting erupted as they practiced for an annual baseball game between lawmakers.
    Senior congressman Steve Scalise was shot in the hip, according to fellow Republican lawmaker Mo Brooks who told CNN at least two law enforcement officers and one congressional staffer were also shot in the incident in Alexandria, Virginia.
    "Five people were transported medically from the scene," Alexandria police chief Michael Brown told a press conference.
    Police said the shooting suspect was in custody and "not a threat."
    President Donald Trump said he was closely monitoring the developments in Virginia, and that Scalise, the majority whip who rallies Republican votes in the House of Representatives, was expected to recover.
    "Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with him," Trump tweeted.
    In a statement earlier, Trump described himself as "deeply saddened by this tragedy," saying his "thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders and all others affected."
    About 25 senators and congressmen were at the practice, according to Senator Jeff Flake who told reporters some 50 shots rang out in the exchange of fire between the gunman and the lawmakers´ security detail, at around 6:30 am (1030 GMT).
    Flake said the suspect was a white man with dark hair, apparently in his 40s or 50s, wearing jeans and a blue shirt.
    Asked whether he thought it was a random shooting, Brooks told CNN: "It sure as heck wasn´t an accident."
    "People know this is the Republican baseball team practicing," he said. "You can tell. You can recognise many of us. You can see our security detail."
    "It is pretty well known at the neighborhood who those folks are on the baseball field and where we practice."
    "He knew who we were. I´m a former prosecutor and, yeah, he was going after elected officials, congressmen."
    ´Dragging his body´
    Brooks described chaotic scenes after Scalise was shot.
    "He was not able to move on his own power. He was dragging his body from the second base infield to the outfield to get away from the shooter while all this firing was going on," Brooks said.
    "He is a physician and we deferred to his judgment on what to do. I held a cloth over the wound to stop the bleeding as Brad was getting some kind of scissors device to cut through the pants to try to have better access to Steve Scalise´s wound and his hip."
    Brooks said he took off his belt and used it as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding on a staffer who was shot in the leg.
    Local schools were locked down.
    "A lock-in takes place if a threat is identified outside the school. All school doors are locked but classes continue as normal. No entry into or exit from the school will be allowed," said a message from Alexandria City Public Schools.
    Scalise, a representative from the southern state of Louisiana elected to Congress in 2008, heads the conservative House caucus known as the Republican Study Committee.
    The staunch conservative is among the lawmakers leaving the drive to repeal former president Barack Obama´s signature health care law, among other top Republican priorities.

    ISLAMABAD: PTI has requested the Supreme Court to stop Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar from creating hurdles in the investigation being carried out by the Joint Investigation Team of the Panama case.
    In its petition, PTI has alleged that the prime minister has misused his powers by starting a movement against the judiciary and the JIT that has been formed to probe the Sharif family and others regarding the Panamagate. It added the purpose of this movement was to hinder the investigation being carried out by the JIT. This was despite the fact that the Supreme Court has expressed satisfaction over the progress of the team, the petition stated.
    It further read the federal ministers and other officials of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz were targetting the investigation team. Moreover, PTI stated, the JIT members, judges and their children have also been threatened.
    Therefore, PTI requested the apex court, to direct the prime minister and finance minister to implement court orders under Article 190 of the Constitution, which states all executive and judicial authorities throughout Pakistan shall act in aid of the Supreme Court.

    The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday re-allotted Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) the ?bat? election symbol, said a notification issued by the ECP.
    PTI?s election symbol was withheld by the ECP due to the party not holding intra-party elections, which are mandatory under ECP rules for allotment of an election symbol.
    Imran Khan was re-elected chairman of the party and PTI stalwart Shah Mahmood Qureshi as vice chairman for another term.

    LAHORE: The traffic warden, who put his life at risk in order to hunt down the truck involved in a hit-and-run incident, was rewarded for his act of sheer bravery.

    Chief Traffic Officer Lahore Roy Ejaz announced a prize worth Rs10,000 for the warden named Jawad.
    Apart from that, the CTO presented the warden with a certificate of appreciation.
    Ejaz said that the traffic warden risked his life and he should be duly praised for his act of bravery.

    The space is on the first floor at a luxury apartment complex near the harbourfront in the west of Hong Kong Island, according to records from the city's Land Registry.
    Measuring 188 square feet (17.5 square metres), it was bought by Kwan Wai-ming, an executive director at an investment firm, said the South China Morning Post which called the sale a world record.
    It tops the HK$4.8 million paid for a parking space last October at another luxury residential complex.
    The sale comes a month after a Hong Kong tycoon paid US$3 billion for a prime commercial lot in the Central business and shopping district, in another record for the city where property prices have become a political issue.
    Small businesses are being forced to close due to spiralling rents and many residents cannot afford to buy or rent decent homes, despite a series of measures by the government aimed at cooling runaway prices.
    Commercial and residential property prices have been fuelled by an influx of money from wealthy mainland Chinese investors and developers.
    Critics also accuse the government of having cosy ties with developers, rather than prioritising the construction of more reasonable public housing.

    United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres (C) visits a camp for internally displaced people outside Kabul, Afghanistan June 14, 2017 - Reuters KABUL: There is no military solution to the conflict in Afghanistan that is forcing record numbers of people from their homes, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday, during an unannounced visit to the war-torn country.
    Guterres' first visit as secretary general comes as the Afghan government faces internal turmoil, insurgents make gains nationwide and the international military coalition mulls plans to send thousands more troops to help struggling Afghan forces.
    These combined threats have worsened the crisis for refugees and internally displaced people, forcing international bodies like the United Nations to call for emergency funding.
    The crisis can only be solved by ending the war, said Guterres, standing in a makeshift camp on the outskirts of Kabul that accommodates Afghans displaced by fighting.
    "Peace is the solution for the problem," said Guterres, previously a United Nations' high commissioner for refugees.
    At least 126,000 Afghans have been forced to flee their homes, the United Nations says.
    More than 218,000 Afghan refugees have also returned this year from neighbouring Iran and Pakistan, many citing pressure from authorities there.
    The International Organization for Migration estimates that at least 600,000 refugees could return this year, piling strain on aid groups struggling to help the newly displaced.
    Khumri, a 30-year-old Afghan woman who met Guterres, said she had lived in the squalid camp for the last two years with her family after their home was destroyed and her husband killed by government forces battling Taliban occupying their village in the northeastern province of Kapisa.
    "We need everything," she said, recounting the struggle for clean water, food, and hygiene materials that drives some to beg.
    Guterres was set to meet Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who is trying to soothe domestic political tension after recent violence in the capital, Kabul.
    Ghani also hosted international delegations last week in a bid to set the stage for peace negotiations with the Taliban, which have remained stalled amid widespread fighting.
    If the Taliban do not begin negotiations soon, Ghani will seek new UN sanctions against the group as a sponsor of terrorism, he told the June 6 meeting.
    Any sanctions would be up to the UN Security Council, Guterres said. Afghanistan has endured too many "foreign interventions", however, he added, urging an eventual deal to resolve the war.
    Thousands of international troops remain in Afghanistan to train and assist Afghan forces, besides mounting counterterrorism operations.
    US President Donald Trump has given Defense Secretary Jim Mattis the authority to set troop levels in Afghanistan, opening the door for future troop increases.

    Former interior minister Senator Rehman Malik will appear before the Panama Case Joint Investigation Team (JIT) on June 23, sources informed on Wednesday. 
    On Monday, a spokesperson for the senator said the former interior minister will 'soon' be appearing before the JIT. 
    The spokesperson explained that Malik, who left Pakistan for London on June 9, received a summons by the JIT on June 10 to appear on June 13.
    He said Malik would inform the JIT of another date of appearance. 
    Malik, who remained the interior minister during the previous Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-led federal government, is also a former bureaucrat. He is also a member of the Senate for the second time in a row from the PPP-Parliamentarians. At present, he chairs the Senate Committee on Interior and Narcotics while being a member of several others.
    Malik has also served in the Federal Investigation Agency at various posts, and later became the agency?s director-general.
    He was investigating Nawaz Sharif for corruption during the second government of Benazir Bhutto in the mid-1990s while being in the FIA.
    The JIT is probing the international investments of the prime minister?s family in light of the Supreme Court?s April 20 judgment in the Panama case.
    The prime minister is also expected to appear before the JIT on Thursday while his brother, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, will do so on Saturday.

    ISLAMABAD: Japan exports cars to Pakistan but now it is the other way around as a Pakistani company has started exporting its three wheeler rickshaws to Japan.

    A local Pakistani company Sazgar Engineering, a private manufacturer of 4 Stroke CNG Auto Rickshaws and Automotive has been exporting its famous rickshaws to the Japanese markets.
    Despite, a strong industrial base and a thriving automobile industry, Japan would import Pakistani traditional rickshaws as its citizens use them for fun and leisure purposes.
    According to the Sales Head of Sazgar Engineering Ismail, Pakistan's traditional, colorful truck and vehicle art is famous worldwide.
    The locally manufactured rickshaws are famous in Japan for the similar appeal.
    He said that Japanese are extremely careful with road safety.
    So apparently these rickshaws do comply with their standards.
    That is why it is road legal, can go on highways.
    Actually it is the only three wheeler in history of Japan to be allowed on Japanese highways, he added.
    "Our engines conform all laws, rules and regulations ofgovernment of Pakistan.
    These vehicles are supposed to cruise at 50km/hour," he added. For years, Pakistan has been importing automobiles from Japan.
    Japanese car manufacturers like Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, and Nissan have become household names, not just in Pakistan but across the world.
    Pakistani rickshaws are small and colorful vehicles and could prove useful for commuting in narrow streets of the country.
    Japanese have been using rickshaws for travelling shortdistances, he added.
    Responding to a question, he said automobile industry needed to capitalize on rickshaw market and expand its export.
    The appeal and quality of the vehicles should be maintained and improved for the growth of the market.

    CARDIFF: Pakistan, riding on their newfound momentum after beating South Africa and Sri Lanka, face down unbeaten hosts England in the first semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy on Wednesday (today).

    Pakistan will be playing their fourth semi-final of the tournament, having made past appearances in 2000, 2004 and 2009. England, on the other hand, have made it to the finals of the tournament in 2004 and 2013.

    Pakistan fans cheer on their team against Sri Lanka CARDIFF: Fans who no longer plan to attend the Champions Trophy semi-final between England and Pakistan in Cardiff on Wednesday have been urged to put their tickets on the official re-sale site in a bid to prevent empty seats at the ground.
    When spectators bought tickets for the one-day tournament, they were asked to specify a team preference by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
    Of those that did for the Cardiff semi-final, 30 percent said they were India fans.
    But with title-holders India playing Bangladesh in Thursday´s second semi-final at Edgbaston, there are concerns that Wednesday´s match at the 14,100 capacity Cardiff ground could be blighted by mass no shows.
    The deadline for fans to get their tickets on the resale site is midnight (2300 GMT) on Tuesday and after that officials will decide whether they can put them on sale on the morning of the game.
    Both semi-finals are officially sold out.
    But some 8,000 fans have gone ´missing´ from the three group fixtures played in Cardiff.
    "That´s been reasonably disappointing here, but we are doing as much as we can across all of our channels," Claire Furlong, the ICC´s communications manager, told reporters at the ground on Tuesday.
    "It is a sell-out but we are doing as much as we can to ensure it´s a sell-out with bums on seats as well," she added.
    There were suggestions bad weather may have been a factor in people deciding not to turn up on the day for England´s match against New Zealand in Cardiff.
    But Eoin Morgan, the England captain, was confident of plenty of support on Wednesday.
    "Cardiff has always been a very good venue for us and the last game we had great support and a full house and everybody seems to get right behind us," he said.
    "I think tomorrow is sold out. That is what I have been told."

    Sri Lankan officials appreciated Pakistan Navy?s efforts for the region?s maritime security.

    ?Pakistan will continue to cooperate with Sri Lankan armed forces for training and technical expertise,? Admiral Zakaullah said.
    The Sri Lankan president thanked the naval chief for Pakistan Navy?s aid and cooperation during the recent floods that wreaked havoc in the country.

    Think about a KFC zinger sandwich in the space...
    Don't just think about it, it's actually happening.
    In a move that could probably be fairly described as "peak capitalism," KFC and the private spaceflight company World View are teaming up to send a chicken sandwich to the edge of space for a four-day trip into the stratosphere, at about 7 to 30 miles off the ground.
    Exciting! No?
    Kevin Hochman, KFC US president, in a statement, said, "We?re excited to be the ones pushing spicy, crispy chicken sandwich space travel forward,? 
    ?In all seriousness, we?re proud to support World View?s commitment to advancing space research and trust them to take our world famous Zinger sandwich to space.?
    The Zinger chicken sandwich is scheduled to take flight on June 21. The launch will be broadcast live online.


    World View is also planning to return the sandwich ? which will be housed within a bucket-shaped container ? back to Earth after the flight.

    This whole thing sounds completely ridiculous and funny, but it marks an important moment for World View.
    "When we were first contacted by KFC to send a Zinger into space, we obviously thought it was quite funny," said Jane Poynter, World View CEO, via email. 
    The Zinger launch is planned as the first true, multi-day test of World View's Stratollite space system.

    This Zinger flight will help World View test a lot of technology needed for future flights.

    China Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang. Photo: Xinhua BEIJING: China's Foreign Ministry has said they will work with the Pakistan government to investigate reports that the two Chinese nationals allegedly abducted by Daesh in Quetta were missionaries.
    In a statement released late on Tuesday, ministry spokesman Lu Kang said China attached great importance on protecting the safety and legal rights of Chinese nationals overseas, but they must adhere to local laws and regulations, and respect local traditions and customs.
    "As for reports that the relevant Chinese nationals were suspected of illegal missionary work in Pakistan, we will cooperate with the Pakistan government and launch an investigation in accordance with the law," Lu said.
    China ?gravely concerned? over reports of kidnapped nationals? killing
    Two Chinese teachers were kidnapped from Quetta?s Jinnah Town on May 24
    The pair, identified as Lee Zing Yang, 24, and Meng Li Si, 26, were abducted by armed men pretending to be policemen on May 24 in Quetta. Last week, Daesh had claimed its members had kidnapped and then killed them.
    The Interior Ministry on Monday alleged for the first time that the two Chinese nationals were preachers who had abused the visa system by posing as businesspersons to enter the country.
    "Instead of engaging in any business activity they went to Quetta and under the garb of learning Urdu from a Korean national...were actually engaged in preaching," the ministry said in a statement.
    It did not say what kind of preachers they were, nor did it say if the Korean was from North Korea or South Korea.
    In his statement, Lu reiterated that China opposed all forms of terrorism and commended the Pakistan government's pledge to continue protecting Chinese people and businesses in the country.
