Fidel Castro served as prime minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976 and as president from 1976 to 2008 β serving one of the longest reigns in political history. Hailed as a revolutionary savior by supporters, he became a symbol of dissent against imperialism. Although political thinkers labelled him a dictator, his regime in Cuba saved the island from American imperialism. Standing strong against imperialism, he gave rise to the first communist country in the West.Β
