India's Food Authority Plans To Set Up Leftover Food Bank, Turns Messiah For The Hungry

On one hand where some of us don't think twice before throwing away food, there are many who don't get to eat proper meals for days. However, things are going to change now as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is now planning to create a food bank where the leftover food from parties and weddings will be collected and distributed to the needy. This is definitely a great move in the right direction and will hopefully help curb the problem of hunger that's prevalent in India.

According to a report published in the Hindustan Times, Pawan Agarwal, CEO of FSSAI, said, “Tonnes of food is wasted annually. We are looking at creating a mechanism through which food can be collected from restaurants, weddings, large-scale parties.” Agarwal further added, “We are looking at partnering with NGOs or organizations that collect, store and distribute surplus food to ensure they maintain certain hygiene and health standards when handling food.” In fact, a notification has been drafted to create a separate section of food business operators. These operators will be given a license to deal only with leftover food. The quality of food will also be a key aspect here.

So how will this work? Helpline numbers will be available where the organizations can call in to get the leftover food collected and then the food will be distributed to those who need it. However, it will still take some time for the authorities to turn this scheme into a reality. Collecting food for the poor is a good cause but takes a lot of effort to make it work successfully. From transportation, food quality to logistics, every aspect is important and cumbersome. However, if this food bank does gets implemented, the problem of hunger will be eradicated to some extent.
