ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal said on Wednesday that if an elected prime minister can be punished by the courts than a person who violated the Constitution can also be punished for his crime.

Referring to former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf, the interior minister said that he can give interviews to TV channels but cannot appear before the court [where he is facing charges of treason, among others].

The government has been directly and indirectly criticising the 'unfair' treatment meted out to the country's last military ruler after the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif as prime minister by the Supreme Court on July 28.

Talking to the media after a visit to the NADRA headquarters, Iqbal said that no country in the world has sacrificed as much as Pakistan in fighting terrorism.

Iqbal said that Pakistan?s commitment to battling terrorism does not require validation by any other country.

"Pakistan has and will continue to work with the international community for eliminating terrorism," he added.

The Foreign Office yesterday in a statement reiterated the same after United States President Donald Trump announced his strategy for the region on Tuesday, harshly criticising Pakistan for providing a safe haven to "agents of chaos".
