Uncharted Lost Legacy Review: A Game That Explored Ancient India

Whenever a new Uncharted game is released the world comes to a stand still and the latest installment ‘Lost Legacy' did just that. The Lost Legacy is more of an expansion that adds to the story of Uncharted 4 and takes place in India. For the first time, you get to play as a woman which in my opinion was a welcomed decision as most female characters are mostly relegated to DLCs and other spin-off mobile games.

The game focuses on supporting characters Chloe Fraser and Nadine Ross, who have questionable morality and are on the hunt for some treasure. Naughty Dog has always written solid characters for their games and the two treasure hunters are no exceptions. The game lasts for about 8 hours and most of the time you will find yourself climbing trees, ancient ruins and fighting bad guys - normal for any Uncharted game.

The two protagonists have set out to find a lost city before the big guy gets to it - the basic premise of any Uncharted game. However, along with the way you often find yourself in sticky situations where you need to overcome many obstacles. You will often find yourself solving puzzles which have a direct co-relation with the storyline and can often affect the outcome.

After the big opening sequence, you will be placed in a big open-world type area which you must traverse with a car. After conquering tasks in the open area, the story will suddenly spike over the course of seven chapters.

What we loved most about the game were the combat encounters that can be carried out either in a stealthy manner or you can go all guns blazing. The AI on the bad guys is extremely good and you will often find yourself dealing with backup in case you trigger an alarm. You play as Chloe, who herself is of Indian origin and has something personally invested in the said treasure.

Combat and puzzles get harder as you progress through the story, however, most of them are very predictable. Being predictable in nature, we often found ourselves not caring about the outcome and rushed most of the set pieces.

In terms of performance, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy isn't much different than any other Uncharted game and is in fact very similar to the fourth instalment. The grappling hook is back which can be used to traverse mountains or can also be used as a tool to take out the bad guys.

Even though this instalment is an expansion, the Lost Legacy feels more like a full fledged game. The gameplay is more refined and has some new updates to the camera movement. The games feels more open as compared to previous installments that would force you into closed off areas and bottlenecks.

We enjoyed moments where Chloe and Nadine would put their climbing skills to the test and traverse high rise mountains or use the grappling hook to swing around. All you need to do is follow the light and the white/yellow highlighted markings which will guarantee you to find a path. Climbing sections also have scripted moments which often put Chloe into peril, however, she would usually survive with no input from the player.

In terms of the storyline, Chloe is attempting to recover “The Tusk of Ganesha” which is an ancient artifact of the Hoysala Empire. You travel to the western parts of India and you will come across a warlord who also wants the tusk for his devious reasons. India is currently in a civil war and the lost city that you are set out to find, in right in the middle of the war-zone.

The Lost Legacy boasts some beautiful environments to explore and you can use the in-game Photo Booth option to capture the vistas. The game uses the same old formula as previous Uncharted games, however, the game shines thanks to a fresh take on the protagonists. The duo has good charisma amongst themselves and we won't be surprised to see some sort of sequel featuring the two. The pair has certainly proved that we don't need Drake.

    Should You Buy It?

If you love action-adventure games, you definitely need to play the Lost Legacy. The game is a refined version of Uncharted 4 and a story of its own.
