KARACHI: Police on Sunday baton-charged and tear-gassed participants of a protest rally in Karachi, which was organised by Imamia Students Organisation (ISO) against the United States.

The participants of the rally attempted to head forth to the US Consulate at which police charged them with batons at Karachi's Numaish roundabout.

Police reportedly charged protesters with batons after failure of multiple rounds of talks with them. It was learnt that the participants insisted to lead their way to the US Consulate to record protest against recent statement by the US president against Pakistan.

The law enforcers also fired tear-gas shells to disperse the protesting masses, who also pelted rocks on the police.

SSP East Irfan Baloch said a station house officer (SHO) was injured after being hit by the protesters with batons.

At least three participants were said to have been taken into custody by the police.

Sindh Information Minister Nasir Shah condemned the use of force on participants of the rally.

"Whoever gave orders to baton-charge protesters will be brought to justice," he said.
