Everton striker Wayne Rooney was arrested on suspicion of driving under influence of alcohol, the Mirror reported on Friday.

England's all-time record scorer was on his way home after an evening out with friends, when he was stopped by the police near his home in Cheshire on Thursday night.

Rooney who announced his international retirement last week after 53 goals for his country in 119 appearances, spent the evening at a bar in Alderley Edge, believed to be The Bubble Room.

A fellow customer, Shropshire cricketer Jack McIver, posted a picture of himself with the 31-year-old at the venue on social media at 10 pm.
