KARACHI: The provincial government on Wednesday approved the extension of Rangers' special powers in Karachi for another 90 days.

After the request is approved by the Ministry of Interior, the paramilitary force ? requisitioned under Article 147 of the Constitution and operating under clause 1 of subsection 3 of section 4 of Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 ? will be able to prevent the commission of terrorist acts and scheduled offences in notified areas.

The paramilitary force's tenure for aiding the police and civil administration will expire on October 12.

The paramilitary force was granted certain special powers including arrests and raids when the Karachi operation started back in 2011, Ghani said in a statement to the media.Β

Under the National Action Plan and the Anti-Terrorism Act, the federal cabinet granted special powers to the Rangers to lead a targeted joint operation with the police against criminals involved in targeted killings, kidnappings for ransom, extortion, and terrorism in Karachi. The operation was launched in September 2013 in Karachi.Β Β Β
